I think one of the reasons these rivalries have largely become less fierce is because in this modern social media age people don't know the difference between a good rivalry and a toxic hatred

Should never go beyond football, I wouldn't even say I hate rival team players or whatnot it's a strong word, I dislike them especially on match day but you get some fans for example laughing at Hillsborough and laughing at kids with cancer who support rival teams or wishing death and rape on their families, that's where it goes too far.

Bravo. More of this type of content please! This is your best piece of content released so far this year for sure, I mean that as a compliment btw! As a fan for over 25 years I already know and understand all this stuff, but I think it's really important the younger fans coming up have access to the intricate bits of our history like this. Nice one dude.

I was in primary school when Leeds went down in 04, so my only proper knowledge of them in the top flight is the last two seasons. My da & grandad have told me some crazy stories from back in the day. I agree with you Ste, part of the fun of football is proper hating your rivals. It's funny that they took so long to get back up but having teams like them and City in the league is actually great for us as fans. First away day at Elland Rd on Sunday and I can't wait!

Great upload. As long as I can remember (I'm 55) there has been a hatred of Manchester United amongst most Leeds . I remember Allan Clarke first game at Elland road as manager against man u and after the game there were thousands of Leeds fans on a hill charging down to attack the man u fan escort. Never witnessed anything like the carnage that was seen that afternoon since. I think the atmosphere at Elland road tomorrow will be pure evil. I just have a gut feeling Leeds are going to win.

Born in 2005, the rivalry always intrigued me, especially as a supporter of United from outside of England. I looked through the cities' relations with each other and its roots from the War of Roses and how Leeds were a force to be reckoned with during 60s-70s, and in the late 90s and early 2000s. I can't remember who, but someone wrote it like this, "the Leeds- United rivalry is the continuation of the War of Roses on a football pitch." The color association helps, and ever since learning about that, I really wanted Leeds to come up so I could see it with my own eyes, the hatred, the passion, the story unfolding at Old Trafford and Elland Road. This rivalry is the dog's bollocks (in a good way) and long may it continue.

Fun fact: G.R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' is partially inspired by the War of the Roses. Specifically, House Lannister and House Stark are parallels to House Lancaster and House York.

I've found the United/Leeds/Liverpool rivalries are started because of location but continued as they were all competitive. United in the 60s, Leeds/Liverpool 70s/80s then United again in 90s/00s and now Liverpool again

  • @edtcreative

Definitely taught the younger and casual Reds a thing or 2 with this. Only time, I've ever been happy for Leeds is when they beat Arsenal to win us the title. Even though I grew up in the 90s, one of the earliest things I learned was we hate Leeds.

  • @AndyUltra

Great video and i pretty much knew all of this. I'm 49 and have been going to OT for a long time now. I will say this though, if you want to get the rivalries going again it wont start with the fans. It has to start with the players and in this day of age out of the 22 players on the pitch there will only be 2 of them that want this. The rest will probably all be on first name terms with each other and cant wait to play fifa against each other after the match has ended. Modern day footballers have killed the passion we used to enjoy so much I'm sad to say.

  • @jamesmcguigan8505
    @jamesmcguigan8505 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Leeds fan here in peace. Very well appreciated this video as fans such as Huddersfield, Barnsley or Sheff weds could not understand why the level of hate is directed towards "you lot".
From a Leeds fan perspective the reason why we hate you isn't because of jealousy, glory or success. It's how the media and yourselves are perceived. For example in 1974 when we won the league and won it in style. Man U were relegated but the whole media retric was about u going down rather than us legitimately winning the league.
Don Revie was banned by the FA for "bringing the game into disrepute" after leaving the England job to go to UAE as he was gonna be getting the sack anyway. Busby was given a knighthood and rightfully so for his achievements but the FA shunned Revie and didn't even send a representative to his funeral. A truly great manager of whom Fergie got his ideas from.
Fast forward to 1992 and the year we won the league with a midfield quartet of Speed, McAllister, Batty and Strachan. And of course Eric Cantona. Yes a daft mistake from our board but nothing said about how influential Strachan was for us. I do believe Dan James can have that influence.
The whole Munich chanting thing is disgusting and brings down the name of our football club. This game seems to bring out nutters who barely go to a game and I doubt they were there during the league one days!!! And I doubt they'll be there against spurs or Norwich in the next two home games.
From a footballing level though and the way our season has gone. We need to turn up for this one. No excuses this time. I love bielsa but he has to understand the intensity of this rivalry. We can lose heavily to any other of the top 6 and it's not gonna matter. But this one do's. And after the shambles against Everton we have to come out with a response. We need to be snapping and snarling like the Revie days and get a result and make Elland Road a cauldron without the sick chanting. But there is no love lost and we need this more than you do. Especially in the relegation battle. So c'mon Leeds, get into em!! MOT!!

As a united fan this comment is one of the most sensible I have read from a leeds fan. Respect. But will be calling your lot all the names under the sun come Sunday.

    • @jamesmcguigan8505
      @jamesmcguigan8505 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Same from our perspective. Elland Road needs to be a cauldron. Like nothing else. There's alot of in fighting going on from "plastics" who have jumped on the bandwagon since Bielsa arrived and whilst we're going through a tough time are quick to pick on certain members of the squad.
We have to be at it from word go. Don't give you any time to breath. Mark Pogba out of the game and ensure we don't allow your midfield to dictate. If we can get Raphinha and Dan James into the game who will have a point to prove we can get at you. But we need to start Geldhart and not persist with Tyler Roberts. We need characters in this game and not players who will shy away because another hammering will be unacceptable against you lot.
Bring it on and someone snap Ronaldo!! That's the old Leeds way!! MOT!!

My Stepdad is a Leeds fan, and he managed to get me and my brother tickets to watch the Carling Cup game against Leeds in 2011, the catch was they were in the Leeds stands. So it was us two United fans sitting in the home stands a stones throw away from the other United fans, getting screamed abuse at and keeping our mouths shut and heads down watching us smash them 3-0 with a team of kids and old farts.

Great video, thanks a lot for the info. I always wondered where the rivalry with Leeds came from... I'm Venezuelan and started following United in '97 (born in '82, was 15 then) and always saw Arsenal as the big rivals during the Fergie vs Wengner years because it was the fight for the title every year, I remember great games against the Leeds of Harte, Ferdinand, Smith but never knew of the intensity of the rivalry or understood it

Great vid this, I’m a Leeds fan, but my two best mate are Man U fans and I try to explain to them where the rivalry comes from. I agree with howson here but in my view, the situation is, very few clubs can legitimately claim to be the best clubs in England, Leeds and Man U are among them.
I’ve always been very envious because, if we had played things differently in the early 90’s we could have took off the way United did, ie keeping Eric and pushing on.
Love the rivalry, for some reason all common sense goes out the window when we play you lot. There is ALOT of envy at the route of it.

Great video man! I absolutely agree that there needs to be fierce rivalries on and off the pitch, but cant let things get too out of hand though. Advocating violence outside of the game is not cool, but as long as there's enough fuel to fire an intense match, I'm all for it!
Reminds me of a guy from Bolton I used to work with (in Aus). We were good friends at the workplace, but whenever I talked about Man U he hated me hehe. I didn't know why at the time, but I slowly came to realise that Bolton were tacking on to Manchester as a rival because no one else really considers them a footballing threat haha.

I am one of the modern fans and the game I have loved the most so far was when we came back from 2 0 down at the etihad with mourinho. That game had everything and the players really started getting heated up towards the end of the game. That was probably the best derby I have seen.

Talking to another Utd fan here in Australia back in the late 90s, he had some interesting takes on rivalries. He was in his 70s back then, and talked about how in the 30s Utd and City fans were reasonably friendly with each other, and would mingle happily when entering the ground. He told me that he was the only Utd fan in his family - his parents and all his siblings were City fans. And among Utd fans in Australia in the 70s and 80s, the rivalry was always with Liverpool and Leeds, rather than City.

And the rivalry between United and the Red scouse gits started with the building of the bridge on the Manchester Ship Canal.
Until then every major engineering project in that area of the country got their workers from Liverpool, the Mayor of Manchester at that time decided to source the workmen locally. This is also where the thing about scousers being out of work started apparently lol 😂
Got told that by a scouser decades ago, no idea whether it's true or not though.

Good explanation Stephen. Unfortunately, the rivalry will never be like it was because of the changes in society since the 60’s/70’’s & 80’s. If you look at the games from when I was a kid, it wasn’t “trendy” to be a football supporter then. The press more often than not, called the supporters “hooligans”. Yet now, the media love a scoop on a high profile player.. You could hardly pick out a woman, a black person, asian or anything else in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s. They were there but so minimal. Most of the supporters were working class blokes, not as Roy Keane said, the prawn sandwich”. Brigade…On top of this the likes of Sky tv & the way that players are overly protected nowadays..

We've battered these nearly every time we've played them since they come up. Leeds get battered a lot because of the way Bielsa plays & the limitations in the quality of players. Hopefully we give them another whipping.

Leeds didn't have to look far for rivals. Everyone hated us lol. Chelski are are our 2nd biggest rivals.
I just hope we can make this game competitive. All we have in our favour is that we're due a performance. Which is a roundabout way of saying we're in poor form. Last season we only drew because Phillips played and was MOTM. This time round we have no Phillips or Bamford. We need a big performance from Meslier. Rodrigo needs to continue his good form and Raphinha needs to step up (he's been awful the last couple of games). And if Bielsa plays Rodrigo/Klich in midfield we're in big trouble.

My mate is Leeds and another is Manchester United. Both are in there 80’s and they always get heated when the two play, and the roots of the roses derby is still there. Leeds also had one with Chelsea back in the day, which can still be felt at Elland Road.

I think there are several reasons rival players are now "matey" rather than "hatey". (1)The huge influx of foreign players. (2) Most players are fabulously wealthy compared to a couple generations ago and won't risk future income with a fight resulting in a career ending injury. (3) Social media managers and agents demanding they protect their image for sponsorship purposes.(4) Stricter refereeing that doesn't let things come to a boil.

I'm of that age where Leeds were no 1 started going to games with uncles in late 70's. City the scoucers. Keno was the last to carry the baton of rivalry. Now days the wishy washy " there's no losers" attitude you see in Park football translates. Well for those that subscribe to that philosophy it's not okay to be second. Life and history are written by the winners.

Rivalries can also change, Newcastle United main rival has always been Sunderland, but in recent years I hear more and more people talking about Villa as the team they dislike the most, even though the cities are far from each other, I guess it started when some of they're fans celebrated our relegation. The clubs are usually on similar part of the table, and often fighting about the same players. So I would argue we have more historical rivalry with Sunderland, but more competitive rivalry with Villa.
