Great reaction I feel when they did this live on Conan it’s even better. The video is really good here but for some reason the live performance on Conan is better. You should react to it as well.
i am 54 years old and been a rock music lover all my life, i love the simon and garfunkel version.. but in 54 years this is the best cover of ANY song i have ever heard, it amazes me so much to hear this version for years now
I remember driving home from work one day and listening to NPR, they were interviewing David, and at the end played Disturb’s version of the Sound of sSlence. I remember sitting in my driveway feeling so overwhelmed and emotional at their rendition.
I listen to this song daily it has touched me in the most profound way. It is written in my will that this version of this song will be played as My Ashes are spread in a lavender field in the mountains. There are no words to describe how this song has affected me on a daily basis. I am not a musician I Cannot break this song down however emotionally It is a journey.
It has been said that the Simon & Garfunkel version was a warning for humanity and that this version is anger at that warning not being heeded. Also that Paul Simon contacted David Draimon after hearing this rendition. He said that he loved it and that he now owns this song. Talk about amazing praise from an amazing songwriter!!!
Ummmm, just want to point out here.... we all know Simon & Garfunkel's version is the ORIGINAL right ??? There's a lot of comments here talking about "their version" of it.... Ummm no - they are the original artists, the creators if you will, the song was written by Paul Simon, & we would not have any of the ' cover versions' of it today, if not for them! :) It Kinda compares to Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams' really.., where people don't realise they're actually he original artist, written by Stevie Nicks. Because there is now so many "Cover Versions" of it 😆☮
I've seen many comments on other videos saying that when David was born, God asked him if he wanted the voice of an angel, or a demon. David said yes. To date that is the best description I've seen of David's otherworldly vocal range.
Well said. At first i was contemplating if this man is a demon look alike being in heavy metal but, as you listen to his voice, it's angelic in petfect contrast to his feature in the video. I saw him again on tv interviews and he looks like a very gentle soul.❤❤❤

My newly revised Top 3 Cover Songs that Transend the Original (Best Covers of All-Time) 1. Sound of Silence - Disturbed 2. With a Little Help from My Friends - Joe Cocker 3. Hurt - Johnny Cash
David sings his ass off on this cover. The whole mood set by the video being done in black and white is genius. David's control over his voice is masterful. This is the best cover I've ever heard.
The way David starts soft to make you lean into what he's saying and gradually builds up the intensity of his vocals until you realize he's growling into your soul never fails to unsettle me.... in a very good way.
What I love most about this version is the fact it starts with nothing, then each verse introduces a new instrument building to the symphony at the end and with the imagery of them bringing the instruments to the people. I feel like it starts somber but ends with hope.
I completely agree this is my favorite version. I believe this version gives the song the emotion it was meant to have. I cry nearly every time I hear this version, not so with S&G’s.
This is an INCREDIBLE version. No other cover of "The Sound of Silence" has given me goosebumps since Simon & Garfunkel's original release. I LOVE this version by Disturbed with David Draimon doing the vocals. Such intensity, complexity of emotion, combined with the perfect graphics...
Art Garfunkel actually called David Dreiman (The singer of Distrubed) and thanked them for this version of the song. This is not what it was meant to be at the time when Simon and Garfunkel wrote it, but it really brings it into the 21st century.
David Draiman's voice is so powerful. The richness of the arrangement gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. He has out his heart and soul into this song and it shows.
I heard sooo many different versions of this song BUT i never heard really the words and the lyrics about the song ! This version hits different ! Great band...hands down !!!
We have the musicians on one side of the rift and the songwriters on the other. They finally get back together in the end. It speaks to a lack of communication that still is rampant today. This is my favorite version, so powerful!
This has got to be one of my all-time favorite covers. The passion and anger in David's voice is wondrous. The arrangement of the instruments is epic and emotional. The video is also a work of art.❤❤❤
The lyrics of this song are supurb and I love that his diction is so clear that they are showcased beautifully. Agreed that the play betwen the vocals and the music is so emotive . I love it.
I have sat in deafening silence in Death Valley in 116 degrees. Nothing moves. Nothing makes a sound. All to survive until the heat of the sun passes. This cover by Disturbed answered questions I didn't know to ask.
I love this version. There is so much passion. I played this at my dads funeral he was 94 and deaf and blind and he was born in London with the cobbled streets and he was in the navy. The amount of people who said it was such a great song for dad was great.
Funny you should say this. My son has asked me for a playlist for my funeral & this cover is on that list. And I’m 81 years old. Never too old to appreciate good music.
This is by far the best version of this song, and I never thought anything could beat S&G. Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen. Fantastic voice and arrangement.
A lot of people love the live performance they did a few years back on "Conan" -- and it is excellent, no doubt. But to me, nothing beats the imagery in this video. The impact of that combined with the lyrics is just incredible!
I think this version is closer to the real version. David was really sick in the Conan performance and the sound people from Conan added effects to his voice he didn't like, but it was still an amazing performance.@@bobcieslinski
The way this version builds and builds is totally amazing the soft beginning and awesome passion and power that builds throughout the song takes me on an emotional ride. His vocals and strength speaks to the soul. Not ashamed to say the power of the entire experience made me cry.
What I love is that David Draiman's voice quality is completely different in each of the five verses, so that even though the tune doesn't change, your emotions do, and you are carried through from start to finish with so much impact. If I am remembering the original correctly, Draiman altered a couple of ending notes and cut a couple of measures short a beat, which also adds more impact. Just a masterful way of making this piece their very own.
A lot of people don't know this, but the lead singer of Disturbed is a classically trained singer. That's why he can do clean songs like this or heavy metal and has an enormous range on his voice.
I become so emotional every time I listen to this song. The first time, I sobbed. David Draiman has one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard, it is beyond powerful. @@bobcieslinski I was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in a little town called Springdale, where those tall smokestacks were imploded recently. Then I moved to Lower Burrell, not far from New Kensington. Lived most of my life there until about 10 years ago when I moved near Cook Forest.

By FAR the best rendition of this song ever. I will listen to any and all reaction video to this song. Love his voice, and the very dark lyrics really come out with the way this is done.
this version feels so much deeper to me, the visuals combined with the key they used creating a unique harmony both audibly as well as visually. I've sang a cover of this for friends and blew their minds but nothing can ever compare to the connection this song has with many of us.
This is my favorite cover of the beautiful warning song. Simon & Garfunkel wrote this as a warning the we are distancing & isolating ourselves from each other back in 1964 but if you look around you see no one listened. In the lunch rooms, on the buses even at the dinner table people are not talking to each other, they are buried in the cell phones disconnected for the person sitting beside them. I see Disturbed's cover as an angry wake up shout that unless we start to connect to each other again we are doomed. What I also like about the video is that it shows that musicians can be the voice for the silent masses wanting their message to be heard through music, the musicians in the boat crossing the river to the people with their scores.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I find this man’s voice so smooth and easy to listen to. It’s the first time I’ve listened to them. Very good, beautiful sound. At the end we get into the nitty gritty, it was fantastic.
This cover is beautifully laid out. Hearing the build-up throughout the song is orchestrated so well. I don't normally like covers, but I love this version. David Draiman has such an amazing voice and it really shows in this video.
He actually studied as a Cantor for Temple/Synagogue when he was growing up. That’s why he has such a Pure Range. As a GenX who remembers the Original…THIS is by far my Favorite.
At first listen, I was so emotionally impacted by this version and felt that this was the way the song was intended to be performed. In the S&G version I related to the "Neon Gods" as the television industry. Look how far we have come "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening"...people with noses in there phones, never really relating.
I love Disturbed and this version of the song. It’s by far my favorite cover of the classic and quite frankly like it better. What I came here to say was that you may enjoy watching Disturbed perform this live on the Conan show. It’s absolutely amazing!
My passion for music began in the 60 and 70s. Simon and Garfunkel were one of my fav musicians. I still have the album with this song on it and I remember memorizing every word. I didn't think any other version could move me but Disturbed has done that. I LOVE this song I don't have words to describe how it makes me feel
This version brings chills to me every time. David is Jewish and has been trained as Cantor at a young age. You should check out other songs by disturbed such as, A Reason to Fight, The Light, and Hold on to Memories. They have other great ones also.
This us absolutely mind blowing. I heard the original when it came out and this is an absolutely incredible cover. The black and white imagery is beyond stunning and combined with the vocals its power to grab your attention is amazing. Whoever did the cinematography is a genius and truly has an eye for light and shadow.
His ability to turn on and off that rough edge in his voice is amazing. Harsh on one word and suddenly buttery smooth. Brings so much life to the words. An already great song... full of sadness at what was coming, now full of anger and bitterness at what has happened anyway. Yet the continued call for people to take notice... to listen.
I fell in love with this on first hearing several years ago. I'm old enough to remember the original well... to me, this included more than losing music. I felt that it was communication itself, that isolation/separation was all that was left. It's just gorgeous both emotionally and melodically. There is no other version of this song that carries this message. Period. Other great versions go for other facets of the song - but like all truly great covers, this one is unique and made the song new again by bringing a different vision to us.
Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song - their version is the original. I remember...and I've never forgotten in all the intervening years the meaning behind the song. In 1964, when the song was first released, I was a freshman in college. I didn't hear it until maybe a year later. And it hit me like a steamroller, although the song itself was sung quietly . Those were different, far, far different times. And a song like Sound of Silence could have been labeled revoltionary (and not in a good way) if it had been performed differently. Simon and Garfunkel's song didn't take off right away, but the message was a quietly sung warning about what was shaking the world then. And in the years that followed, I kept those words in memoy and...well ... in my memory, sometimes deeper, sometimes right on the surface... Because the song WAS a warning. And still IS a warning. I know there are other versions, but this is the one that ...clears throat ... Thank you for reviewing it!
We played this song and Hold On To The Memories at my husbands funeral. We felt that the message in both songs touched everyone . My husband loved both of them.
Epic right’ He brought a “LIGHT” to the darkness with such depth and respect of another Artists message! I see them for the tenth time at the age I might say 62 can’t wait this coming week in Savanah ga
You’re spot on with the emotion David elicits with his lyrics. Most reaction videos of this song have the person tearing up at some point. Their emotions run wild.
I really enjoyed this one! He has a unique voice but gave a considerable amount of emotion. Honestly I never really gave any thoughts to the lyrics. The melancholy black & white background with the rolling clouds went well along with the song. Very well composed! Losing the music is an interesting view, and makes sense. Nice reaction Bob!
I thought the 'losing the music' was a good thought too, but at the end of the video, all the musicians and their instruments show a solution .. to "cross the gap/the river, undertake .. act" .. got on a ship towards the people with the sheet music / the words / the "communication" .. whatever you want to call it. The sound of silence is there, because people don't share but isolate. Well .. that's my 5 cents 😁
It's so much more... every part has very deep meaning. Life is gone out of its place. He stands in the light surrounded by darkness. What was is no more. He is angry by the Word that has been silenced. It's heart-renching and beautifully done! Thank you!

Great comments and very true. It’s a shame and I hope it changes.
So much emotion in this version of the song
I don’t know about everyone else, but I find this man’s voice so smooth and easy to listen to. It’s the first time I’ve listened to them. Very good, beautiful sound. At the end we get into the nitty gritty, it was fantastic.
My favourite version of this song, i also love them doing Hold On To Memories and Reason To Fight, love them singing these kind of songs ❤
watch their version of Land of Confusion - Genesis th-cam.com/video/mlihzhje21U/w-d-xo.html
This cover is beautifully laid out. Hearing the build-up throughout the song is orchestrated so well. I don't normally like covers, but I love this version. David Draiman has such an amazing voice and it really shows in this video.
It was epic PJameson!
He actually studied as a Cantor for Temple/Synagogue when he was growing up. That’s why he has such a Pure Range.
As a GenX who remembers the Original…THIS is by far my Favorite.
This is absolutt the best of this song , absolutt beautiful ❤ Love from Norway ❤❤❤
At first listen, I was so emotionally impacted by this version and felt that this was the way the song was intended to be performed. In the S&G version I related to the "Neon Gods" as the television industry. Look how far we have come "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening"...people with noses in there phones, never really relating.
Yep I agree. Great comments.
Cried like a baby when I heard this, I'm 68! This will NEVER, EVER, be bettered.
I love Disturbed and this version of the song. It’s by far my favorite cover of the classic and quite frankly like it better. What I came here to say was that you may enjoy watching Disturbed perform this live on the Conan show. It’s absolutely amazing!
Thanks I’ll have to check it out.
Truly an incredible voice, deeply touching performance!
This is my favorite cover. David shows fantastic range and control in this solo performance.
Yep fantastic.
That’s awesome to hear you have the original and really enjoy this one. Each is so unique.
Will always love the original song, but this one is the best out there! ❤️🎶
Show this to your band students.
This was Great reaction to this majestic song. Thank you very much brother!! You said it perfectly!! Great band also these guys are.
Thanks I appreciate it.
This version brings chills to me every time. David is Jewish and has been trained as Cantor at a young age. You should check out other songs by disturbed such as, A Reason to Fight, The Light, and Hold on to Memories. They have other great ones also.
Thanks I will
This us absolutely mind blowing. I heard the original when it came out and this is an absolutely incredible cover. The black and white imagery is beyond stunning and combined with the vocals its power to grab your attention is amazing. Whoever did the cinematography is a genius and truly has an eye for light and shadow.
Fantastic version of this song. Love this ❤🇬🇧
It's a song that builds itself step by step....like those steps that we will have to take towards each other
His ability to turn on and off that rough edge in his voice is amazing. Harsh on one word and suddenly buttery smooth. Brings so much life to the words. An already great song... full of sadness at what was coming, now full of anger and bitterness at what has happened anyway. Yet the continued call for people to take notice... to listen.
Incredibly gifted singer for sure.
Hey Aurora. This one really satisfied a need of the time for sure. Such gorgeous singing and the message was clear. Loved it.
This would be a good one for something like that. Sorry to hear about your husband.
This is perfection! He makes it such a powerful song!
Epic right’ He brought a “LIGHT” to the darkness with such depth and respect of another Artists message! I see them for the tenth time at the age I might say 62 can’t wait this coming week in Savanah ga
Nice
You’re spot on with the emotion David elicits with his lyrics. Most reaction videos of this song have the person tearing up at some point. Their emotions run wild.
I really enjoyed this one! He has a unique voice but gave a considerable amount of emotion. Honestly I never really gave any thoughts to the lyrics. The melancholy black & white background with the rolling clouds went well along with the song. Very well composed! Losing the music is an interesting view, and makes sense. Nice reaction Bob!
Thanks Guy! He does have a powerful and emotional way that he sane this. Incredible version. Hope you are having a great weekend!
Well .. that's my 5 cents
😁
The power and passion. Listen live version on TV show Colan. Lead singer was very sick but it didn't matter it was amazing
It's so much more... every part has very deep meaning. Life is gone out of its place. He stands in the light surrounded by darkness. What was is no more. He is angry by the Word that has been silenced. It's heart-renching and beautifully done!
Thank you!
Definitely my favorite version! Absolutely love it! I could listen to this man singing all day long ❤
