Doctor Who: The Best Companion Exit Ever

  • As I was going through the three parter that is Turn Left, The Stolen Earth and Journey’s End, I couldn’t help but find myself wanting to make a video on Donna all by herself. Or more specifically, her tragic exit, which still stands as the single best Doctor Who companion exit ever in my opinion.

The line “I never will find the words” when Nardole exited, I think, is absolutely brilliant. Of course there’s no way you’d know what to say if you’re never going to see your friends again

I love the subtlety and uniqueness of it. He doesn’t get a big fanfare, his job isn’t over, and the role he has to take is so overwhelming, all on his own, of course he’s speechless. It’s an exit similar to the Classic Series but the emotional beats work so much better.

Rose is still my favourite companion, but Donna's ending just broke me. Doctor cant see Rose ever again, but they can remember each other. Doctor could see Donna whenever he wants, theoretically, but if they ever meet, to Donna he would be just another stranger on the street and i doubt Doctor could spend more than a minute with her before all the memories start flooding. Best case scenario, he would just be a weirdo that started crying for no reason, but one word too much could just kill Donna then and there. I doubt Doctor would risk that even to see her for just a moment.

What gets me the most about Donna's exit is the fact that you have seen these 2 best friends the doctor and donna really get along and have so much fun and you have seen Donna literally change from where she started in The Runaway Bride where she seemed like this annoying loud woman that seemed thick but deep down was just sad and miserable with the state of her life and when she joins up with the doctor she grows so much and becomes such a great person that when she knows what is happening to her at the end with the meta crisis she still wants to stay with the doctor. She knows this will kill her but she doesn't care she would rather die than go back to that life feeling miserable and feeling like she is not special and The Doctor her best friend takes that away from her. Just Pure Tragedy

While Donna's exit I think is the most heartbreaking by far, I actually like Martha's exit the most. It's not some big grand event, but is instead very down to Earth and human, and shows remarkable strength on Martha's part. I think it's refreshing to have a character make the active decision to put themselves first and actually leave The Doctor on their own terms.

  • @terrorofdeath3280

Donna's probably the companion that sticks out most for me. Her full exit takes so many episodes, and the cast, and crew are absolutely on their A Game. She's also got a really cute platonic relationship with The Doctor, he isn't a love interest, or a sexual rival (looking at you Mickey and Rory), they're JUST best friends, and that's why she'll always be my favorite companion. I legitimately watch her final episodes when I need to have a good cry.

  • @mmem4264

Donna's exit was the most memorable (and best) in my opinion. That whole sequence still makes me cry, and somehow seeing her in the finale despite her being happy still leaves me sad and slightly bitter remember who she was, how much I liked her growth, and what she had to lose to save everything.

@@FullFatVideos I'd weirdly like Catherine Tate to be the actual 14th Doctor to fit the lesson idea that was used in the Capaldi era as an excuse in the narrative and outside of the narrative as a way to bridge the way between the fans that hated Chibnall and the feminist fans but with the benefit of a better show runner. And I know you said in a previous video you think that the BBC is going to cow tow to the toxic side because of something I don't fully understand (probably because I am Canadian and we only have public domain exports so this licensing freeze isn't something we worry about) but we also have to understand the power staffers voices have in big business and the fact that left wing politics still hold a lot of sway on genre fiction in North America which is also where most of the toxic people you talk about are from. That way bringing the actress back doesn't ruin Donna's ending but actually brings it to the forefront for this Doctor; maybe make her not want human companions for fear of Donna being repeated or have her be like 10 when angry but she's always angry due to being constantly worried for her companions that are the only ones who see actual warmth from her hence why they join her. I don't know but I really think Tate has the chops and it would be better than Hard Cell
So tl;dr Tate as 14 please.

the donna renaissance is something that will always warm my heart. more and more fans of the show are looking back so fondly on her, and i fucking love it. i love the dynamic they had, it was deep friendship without the romantic love subplot (i truly only *really* like one romantic pairing, but i'm in a minority in that boat). it was so refreshing to see, because it focused so much on the wonders of the universe and companionship. donna was incredibly human and so so funny. i even miss the hell out of wilf (christmas doesn't slap as much without the yearly gifs of him in antlers). she grows into herself because she is allowed these extraordinary experiences, she is finally not overlooked and doesn't need that rough shell. and wilf, someone who loves her knows how much happier and better she was for it. i cried so hard with her exit, it's heartbreaking and awful, but a brilliant piece of writing exactly because it is so visceral.

My favorite companion exit was Clara throwing herself into the skizm at Trenzalor, after that moment, all versions of Clara seemed destined to die around the same age... For me, there was something bittersweet about it, both ice cold with eerie, and blazing hot with self-sacrifice at the same time. ... On a side note, my fave companion, Amy, seemed to not really have a proper departure imho... it was Moffet's worse explained paradox.

Amy and Rory were my favorites as well. But looking back, I wish they had a better departure than them being stuck in the 1940s. I just wished after an absolutely crazy adventure that almost ended up with the pond's dead, 11 leaves them in their own time period forever because he doesn't want to lose the only family he has left in the universe. Or if he does come for them, he'll take them to places where there's no danger for either of them, so they'll be safe.

Looking forward to the Whoniverse video! I’m not sure which companion exit is my favourite. Rose’s is the ‘trendy’ answer but Donna’s is up there too. Bill’s exit also resonated with me at the time, particularly the scene where she’s stumbling through the burnt forest as a Cyberman to find the Doctor’s body - the music in that scene is 👌. Like you though, I just wish Moffat could’ve kept her dead and as a Cyberman. Amy and Rory’s has grown on me over the years but Series 7 still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, plus I feel strongly that every Doctor or companion exit should happen in a two/three-parter. I agree with you that The Angels Take Manhattan should’ve been a two-parter. I don’t mind Clara’s exit but it does feel like a bit of a rehash of Donna’s. I think I would’ve preferred her to leave the way she did in Death in Heaven - I felt pretending to The Doctor that she was fine suited her character. Ryan and Graham’s exit was just meh. I still think it would’ve been interesting if Ryan had died saving his dad from getting sucked out of the TARDIS in Resolution. I barely remember that episode but I remember thinking that would’ve been a good twist. Anyway, great video mate.

Curious as to your thoughts on the star beast? As much as I did enjoy RTD's writing returning I certainly think that if the next 2 specials don't end with a satisfyingly tragic ending to Donna then her return will have spoiled what made her exit so good. As it stands at the moment it feels like every concern came true, the metacrisis was undone by just 'letting go', with no immediate consequences (maybe there will be). It feels sick to root against the wellbeing of one of my favourite fictional characters but making these tragic events stick is what makes them meaningful.
I feel that there's probably some degree of pressure on RTD by the BBC to draw back old viewers with classic series 4 Doctor Donna shenanigans, which may explain these decisions. I just hope these specials can be well written even if theyre spoiling Donnas exit

For me, with a doctor who exit, it was Susan’s exit (Yes I know it ain’t NuWho but my reason is these:)
    1. She wanted to just stop travelling and stay in one place and settle down and live life with the Doctor not always over her shoulder in rules.
    2. She finds a love interest in David who knows (well thinks he can’t be with her) but with the Doctor doing a one eighty and proving him wrong on the spot
    3. Once he locks the doors he assures her that it’s best for her to walk her own path but promising he’ll return but hasn’t yet and with her begging to not be left behind since she still cares abt the Doctor since you know, he’s an old man which is her grandfather
    4. And lastly that timeless speech to her

Another reason this exit is so impactful is that, as you say, the 9th and 10th Doctors went through a lot of trauma and loss and he'd finally found a good friend, but then he ends up losing that too, so much so that he doesn't want another companion, even though he said he and Christina made a great team.

My personal favourite is Amy's. Her arc in season 5 is her choice between Rory and the doctor and in season 6, that continues to be questioned, but she gives up her family, her job, her best friend and her daughter just for a chance to be with Rory again, rounding out her character arc of Rory vs the doctor and she chooses Rory. I think it's beautiful IMO, especially since she already jumped off of a building with him because she didn't want him to do it alone, and 8 year old me cried when I first watched it because I started watching with matt smith so the ponds were my first companions.

Donna Noble had a good character development. She went from self-centred person to a selfless person. A shame her character development was destroyed in the Season 4 finale when The Doctor erased all of Donna's memories of him and their adventures together. She want from selfless back to self-centred.

Oh great, now I'm sad *sob* 😢
On a serious note, Donna is likely my top NuWho companion, I was originally concerned after the runaway bride but after that she was a breath of fresh air, she and the Doctor were truly companions, proper good friends exploring the universe. Her exit was so damn tragic, but then those are the stories that often make us _feel_ the most and are consequently considered the best tales (from a dramatic pov). Bill runs a close second for similar reasons, although I agree that her being saved by water girl was a bit of a cop out and lessened that aforementioned tragic death / cyber conversion.
Great video, I just need to stop those darn onion cutting ninjas.....

Absolutely nuts. I really hope Russel does this in a way that doesn't ruin her ending, I absolutely loved Donna, and her ending killed me inside, but it also lent strength to 11's philosophy of not reading the last page, and stuff like that. I hope they can find a way to pull this off...

Of the revived show, yes but that's not saying much considering the competition. Of the show as a whole, I'd put her around 4th or 5th, behind Tegan, Adric, and Jamie (who had a similar best-friends dynamic with the Doctor and forcibly lost his memories of their adventures, but also had the benefit of leaving in a much better story) and maybe Victoria though it's hard to say just from the audio.

Lol i never even realised graham and ryan left, thats how little i paid attention to the show nowadays. I really like that Martha's goodbye is different to Rose's and Donna's, that instead of a dramatic act that tears them apart, it is a sober conversation where she makes the decision to leave. She said what needed to be said. We've actually few times seen companions willingly leave the Doctor, and permanently so, actually we haven't seen that at all in New Who.

You could totally do a One off Donna cameo where the Doctor meets her a day when they weren't with Donna, but before her memory was erased. And it would have another bittersweet end, because it would end with the doctor knowing that they were essentially spending the day with an echo. Maybe? Great content on my favorite companion 💚 also I I loved the chameleon circuit technobabble.

I don't understand how you can spend 10 minutes raving (correctly) about how the subtle end of Donna without any fanfare was brilliant and then turn around and say Angels Take Manhattan should have been a two-parter and the Ponds' end wasn't bombastic enough

  • @V-grandraccoon

I think Graham and Ryan’s exit (along with Nardole’s actually) are some of the most important companion exits. By the time we got to Clara and again with Bill, companions having big sad dramatic endings where something big and bad happens but it’s somehow undone or not really death because such a rite of passage and boring. Simple exits like Nardole, Graham, Ryan and even Martha are essential to the bigger exits feeling more important. Adric’s exit is so memorable because it wasn’t like that all the time. Once everyone has to be forced to not travel with the doctor, it being a forced thing doesn’t matter as much.

What i had really enjoyed about her character are two things: first of all it can sounds of dumb, but the fact that donna isn't a love interest for Doctor, just a really good friend, i freaking appreciate that, remind me the kind of stronge and deep friendship i share with my best friend who's a guy, how can i explain it? Most of the time we"re all used it of " oh they must be together at the end " so it's kind of refreshing to see a guy and a woman just being friends. Second and the most important thing, donna is so REAL. In so many aspect, we can relate to her personnality but also her life, we need more character like Donna. Love the fact that she's not the smartest or stronger person, she has like everyone quality and weakness. Still love you Donna after all these years, what a beautiful character

One of the powerful things about her exit for me is the fact that I wish so hard for a future where the Doctor fixes it. Dreaming about it is both exciting, comforting, and heartbreaking. If it did happen, though, I would lose that. I’d much rather have it be a forever hypothetical; as long as there is a Doctor, he might some day find a way to undo it and that bittersweet feeling is worth it somehow?
I don’t know if that’s weird at all lol

    Jog on!*
The Doctor/Donna was a plausible and satisfying way to end that whole Oud prophecy thing, especially as it ended with the whole “knock 4 times” ending. And Russell T. Davies was way better at ironing out sci-fi details than Moffat. Stephen Moffat has a total of 2 strategies for explaining sci-fi happenings: 1, rely on the old quote “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” hand wave it all away; 2, promise to explain it later in a cliffhanger, and then start exploring a new mystery before you ever have to offer a sufficient explanation for the old one. The Universe needed to be reset because the TARDIS exploded because the universe was blinking out of existence because the TARDIS exploded because the universe was blinking out of existence because the TARDIS exploded…
“THE AMERICAN STATUE OF LIBERTY IS A WEEPING ANGEL, AMY’S GONE BECAUSE OF TIME TRAVEL RULES, FUCK OFF AND STOP ASKING QUESTIONS!!!”
*”Jog on” is my community standards skirting way of saying “fuck off.” I got it from the movie, Hot Fuzz. So you should appreciate it.
