I've had a model 3 performance stealth for 6 months, almost 11k miles.. and I realize although I have driven it a lot. and enjoyed it.. I haven't actually ever DRIVEN in like I used to do in my Miata.. ty for this video.
Awesome, did you watch the model 3 performance of the Daerik channel? He has change a lot suspension, ceramic brakes, that car must be awesome to drive in this road.
Haven't been in years. After I texted you Thursday, I tried to find people around here that wanted to go up for the weekend but no one was free and wanted to go.
Someone did a 360 VR video from the cameras on their Model 3 (and posted to TH-cam), from their drive on the Dragon. Holy smokes, that was fun and nauseating. I once came upon a twisty road sign, next 26 miles. Super excited as I was in my newly purchased 500 Abarth, by mile 13 I was dry heaving from the curves LOL. The last 13 were almost torture. But it was still fun haha.
That was a great ride it's been a long time since I've been to the tail of the dragon.. Nice to see the model 3 is pretty damn competent considering what it was designed to do. I suspect some suspension work and some upgraded rotors and pads and you might find a bit extra speed. We used to run our miatas down there. Had a turbocharged Miata putting about 250 horsepower to the wheels. That made a 2500 pound car pretty fast. We ended up in front of a modified G37 Infiniti coupe. Hit it hard going the opposite direction that you just ran it and ended up at the convenience store there at the end. We pulled in stopped, got out of the car and they was smoke drifting up off all four wheels.. lolz. Guys in the infinity pulled up next to us and we had a nice chat. definitely never ever ever cross the double yellow line here there are too many motorcycles during the summer time and you will kill somebody. if you're not into really fast driving cherohala skyway is also quite beautiful. For a nice relaxed scenic drive if that's your thing. Thanks for posting the video it was really fun to watch...
19:55 This has been a little terrifying, but you know the roads, so I'm sure it's not that bad for you. I had a fun drive to my old job, used push the limits of my car/skill, but I knew the road super well and that made all the difference in safety.
Really liked this video but your image stabilization messed with my head a little. Any chance you can post this 'raw'? I lose sense of the vehicle dynamics due to the stabilization. I'd gladly take the vibrations of the drive. Looks FANTASTIC and your narration is perfect. LIke we are riding along with you. Thanks again!
This run reminds me a feeling of Subaru STi with DCCD (center differential) set to fully open, which gave it rear-biased AWD behaviour (than again, it had LSDs in the rear and front). The difference is that TC and SC were completely disabled, so you could do whatever you are capable. Do you know how does the Tesla Track mode react to a Scandinavian flick in a closed track or slalom course? Does it let it rip away in the classical rally-style AWD oversteer?
Also, what would the MPG be on that same run in something like the C63S or M3 or RS5, going uphill as you were half of the time it seems? Probably dismal. Yeah, it won't consume 40% of the tank, but I'm sure like 3-4 gallons :D
Actually if I remember correctly, I couldn’t get two full runs in on my M3 on one tank of fuel. It was easily over $150/day in fuel. However I could fill up and go. We just need DC fast chargers in the area and all problems will be solved!
Loved this. I missed the BRP drive a few months ago so now I see what I missed on Sunday. One of these days soon I'll have to take a trek out to the tail. It definitely looks fun. Do you find that the authorities just turn a blind eye to that area unless things get out of hand?
For the most part they will only pull you if you’re driving dangerously, crossing double yellows, going way too hard etc. They realize these roads (the people who come to drive them) help keep the local economy from crumbling
Interesting video that highlights the strengths and weaknesses of electric cars. Super efficient electric motors but a very inefficient way of storing the energy (batteries). Which is of course the exact opposite of ICE cars which have very inefficient motors but very efficient energy storage (petrol/diesel) If only battery tech could get closer to fossil fuel for energy storage we could have longer range and drop weight (smaller batteries) Sadly I fear this is a long way off and so for now we are stuck with short range super heavy electric cars.
@@OutofSpecMotoring Not really. I have travelled 700+ miles at speed without refuelling in a ICE car. Electric cars are nowhere near this. At the speeds I travel at I would guess the longest range EV would struggle to top 200 miles. Add in a little headwind and lower temperatures and whilst also affecting the ICE the EV suffers more. Don't get me wrong I am enthusiastic about EV development but there is a way to go yet.
@@DAVEMUGF very, very few cars out there can do 700+ miles on a tank. That's limited to a select few econoboxes that weight half as much as anything else and lack features galore, can't compare that to a Model 3. Also, "Electric cars are nowhere near this" is incorrect. The new Roadster was announced a while back with 620 mile range. In addition, they are most certainly working with Maxwell technology for a new advent of batteries ... we shall see in not that long in the future. As it stands though, scroll up and see Kyle's reply to a comment I made about when he had his M3 F80...he couldn't even get 2 runs in with a gas tank on this route, because with spirited driving, MPG plummets ultra-hard. Imagine in a NA car ... such as the predecessor V8 M3 (which is also heavier). Sure, one can stop at a gas station for 5-6 mins and have it replenished, but hey, V3 superchargers are going to proliferate soon, which give the Model 3 and upcoming newer cars like the Y, 1000 mph charge speeds when you're low (anything from 0-30 or 40% I think, then it slows down as designed).
@@raheeb1 Sorry but you are wrong. My Audi A8 is not an 'econobox' lacking in features. There are other models from MB & BMW that can also easily achieve this. As for the Tesla Roadster it is nothing more than an announcement at this stage and I for one am not interested in such a vehicle. EVs are great and Tesla has done a great job with the M3 but battery technology does have a long way to go. Thankfully, because of the superior efficiency of electric motors batteries do not have to reach the energy density of fossil fuels but man if they could what amazing vehicles we could have.
David Mugford after I posted that reply I said to myself “actually wait. Things like a Golf or BMW 3-Series diesel can get 650 maybe 700 miles. That’s true”. Your diesel A8 can get 700?! We have a diesel Rover in the fleet and it’s insane how much more mileage it gets on a tank vs the V6 gas equivalent engine. Anyhow, in a few years the proliferation of Tesla superchargers in many countries beyond what already is there now, plus the V3 speeds, will make all this far smaller of an issue. If these next 5 years demonstrate increasing oil costs, it’s game over hard for ICE longevity.
Nice Kyle! But hey, did you bring that 2016 M3 Competition here in the fall with all-seasons too? Also, a guy I know who runs a track club had an F80 M3 with the stock brakes and oh boy, those were totally inadequate on the track, he would always have to rock it after it is done, in the lot, back and forth. So yeah, the fix needs to be their $8000+ ceramic option, which he got now on his newer M3 ;) Anyway, I heard the new 5% power bump is quite noticeable. Can't wait for it!
Probably still faster in the corners, not as much down the straights out or out of corners. All wheel drive helps a ton with getting the power down out of corners
