    Thanks. Wanted to make sure I tried the idler before replacing the alternator. As it turns out, it WAS the idler and your video made it possible. Much appreciated.

    so i literally just changed mine today on my 2004 LS trailblazer with 4.2 litre engine , as i like your video , I did not have to take the serpentine belt all the way off , i just took it off the alternator pulley and left it there , why take it all out if you do not have to.

    Idler pulley is a very common issue with the 4.2L trailblazers. I also
    had the whining issue people speak of(higher pitch under acceleration, etc.), replaced the idler pulley and the sound is gone. Highly recommend trying this if you have the same issue.

    You don't even have to take the serpentine belt all the way off. Just take it off the alternator and leave the rest on while you quick swap the pulley. It is helpful to have someone hold tension on the belt while doing this to keep it centered on all the other pulleys. Me and my dad just did this in literally under 5 minutes. It was 15 bucks for the part. My mom listened to her blazer whine like a stuck pig for over 60k miles. Wish I would have looked into this long long ago.

    Thanks for the video! I have a 2009 Saab 9-7x that's basically the same car as the Trailblazer with the 4.2l and this took me a total of like 15 minutes and it made that annoying sound go away.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    HI Nick, It may. If you take the serpentine belt off of the pulley you can test it to see if it's loose or not.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    HI Clint it could be, you may want to see if the noise chamges at all if you turn the steering wheel. if it does, it may have something to do with the steering.

    Yes Nick, if its making a whining sound you need to replace it. The whining sound comes from the bearings being out in your idler pully. I had the same problem in mine just fixed it. Took me a total of 15 minutes.

    Normally you will have to replace the entire compressor because everything is sealed together and it requires a special tool to remove the clutch from the compressor housing.

    Hi Guys! I enjoy and appreciate your videos. My Trailblazer also has a whining noise that has increased over time. I think we have it narrowed down to the AC clutch bearing. Would you agree? It does not make a noise when turning the steering wheel. Do you have a video for that? Changing an AC clutch bearing? Thanks very much. W & D

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi guys! love the videos! I have a whining noise in my 2006 trailblazer. The whining noise is much worse when accelerating but you can hear in at idle. I have changed the power steering pump fluid and just got done changing the alternator. Still whining. Do you think the Idler pulley is the next best option for me?

  • @xXReLentLess99Xx
    @xXReLentLess99Xx 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also got Wd-40 on the belt while trying to get the pulley off. It was pretty rusty and wouldn't come off. Would that make it squeak?

  • @mkm1387

    The new pulley I bought mentions something about it being a sealed bearing and not needing the original dust cover. In this video you remove that front washer plate thing and then replace it. Is this a necessary washer or is it a dust cover that is no longer needed?

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may want to follow the manufacturers instructions for replacing their style of idler pulley.

  • @keithdenner9441
    @keithdenner9441 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I lost the dust cover to the idler pulley when I was taking it out. It fell somewhere down in the lower engine compartment area. Can you just buy the dust cover. I already have a new idler pulley. I have a 2006 GMC Envoy SLT with the 4.2 liter engine. Thanks

  • @labidus74

    I just buy a trailblazer and the idler pulley make some noise. The strap looks good no crack. The truck was not used that much since 6 months. The pulley need to be changed or need some adjustments? I can move the belt about 1/2 inch thanks

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +labidus74 It's hard to say. If it's making a squealing noise, the first thing to do is try adjusting the belt. If that still doesn't work, remove the belt, and check the pulley to see if it feels like it needs to be replaced. It's possible that the pulley surfaces the belt mounts to simply weren't cleaned properly before installing so the belt got a little greasy and is now slipping. If that's the case, clean all the surfaces and consider a new belt. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393

    would a bad idler pulley make a whining sound

  • @johnnypalma721
    @johnnypalma721 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would be a reason for changing the idle pulley? I recently changed my motor mounts because of vibration but I still feel it, not as much as before but it’s still there. Would the pulley be the issue?

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +johnny palma Thanks for checking us out! Common reasons to change the idler pulley would be if the pulley is visibly worn, if the belt is squealing that could be a sign, as well as any damage done to the pulley or bearing. however, e suggest taking your vehicle to a nearby reputable shop to identify the cause. Thank you!

  • @mikeferretti7422

    Can the idler pulley cause the belt to come off? How do I know if it needs to be replaced if it wasn't making any noices. My belt popped off randomly the other day. I inspected the fan/water pump and it's nice and tight and spins, I also checked the AC Compressor and clutch and both are not wiggling and spin nicely. Looking at the pulley and feeling it it's not wiggling or loose,spins freely and wasnt making any noise before belt popped off.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Ferretti We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
