One thing guaranteed to make me feel grumpy is to see my national flag flying upside down....

If that was a 'deep dive' what in hell do you consider shallow?

We're not grumpy, we're realists, who unlike our immature American cousins, understand that life is not a funfair soley for our amusement. Our "grumpiness" is a partially therapeutic protest, in the full knowledge that should we take to the streets to express our displeasure, we'd be locked up, ignored, and demonised by the press.
On the other side of the Atlantic, the antithesis of "grumpiness" reigns supreme. I am sick to death of hearing Americans proclaim with childlike enthusiasm, that they're "SUPER excited!!!" about a new coffee flavour in Starbucks, or some other equally mundane nonsense.
As for our politeness, it's based on a simple desire to avoid social unpleasantness or disquiet in our relatively overcrowded environment. Queueing, giving way, apologising when necessary, all go a long way to creating a more tolerable social atmosphere. Pleasantness and realism aren't incompatible.

I think we're talking about British stereotypes in American media here.

British grumpy?? Possibly the least grumpy people ever.most Brits could be stand up comedians in other nations. Sarcasm with and irony are natural to Brits. However a Brit can call another Brit a festering c**t and they will both laugh uproariously. Hard to get a negative response from a Brit. They use worse play and sarcasm in there humour which is taken literally by people in the USA though. And a lack of understanding on the American part is not the same as the Brits being grumpy.in America irony is just a rumour and sarcasm is not subtle so when a Brit does it well and subtly it misses the mark for Americans.canadians and Australian's get it but in America it's like they have a diluted version of the British use of language and double meanings which leaves them thinking that a joke is an attack or a statement or a complaint. Usually it is humour which is just misinterpreted.watch some jack dee or Sean lock or spaced or Blackadder. Even watch lock stock and two smoking barrels or snatch to see English humour.self deprecation is the order of the day and that is an alien concept state side. It is starting to pick up traction in the states in shows like curb your enthusiasm but it has been part of British culture forever. An awkward MC is usually more relatable àbd so makes them more entertaining.

That Union flag is held at the wrong end. It's mirror image of the real flag. What a load of rubbish you talk.

Yeah, the flag is upside down - not a promising start.

@@ronhall9394 Not upside down. Same both ways. The wrong end is used to mount it. Broad white band should be top left.
