You have no idea how impactful this movie was back in the day. Everything that came after...movies, video games, they all took inspiration from this movie. Another movie that had the same effect was 'Blade Runner' as it talked about subjects like A.I. way before they became everyday topics. It pretty much started the whole cyberpunk genre. Some think 'Blade Runner' is an action movie, but it is not and it is more of a drama/noir film with some deep subject matter. It is directed by Ridley Scott which is the same director who did this film. The Atmosphere in the movie is incredible.

On one hand: I find it hard not to view Alien as a hokey comedy, because it makes me laugh out loud so much even though I'm sure that's not the reaction I'm supposed to have. On the other hand: it is such a blatant rip-off of the 1958 film, *It! The Terror From Beyond Space.*

I saw this on the second day of its national opening at the giant-screen Uptown Theater in Washington, DC. Six or eight of us from the Disclave science-fiction convention down the street walked there to catch the day’s first showing. Perhaps because it was Sunday, there was no significant line. When my friends and I came out, the line of hundreds, waiting for the second showing, stretched down the block and around the corner.
People today have no idea of the impact this film had then. In its own way, it was as innovative as “Star Wars.” The gritty, detailed set design, the horrifically stormy planet, the Hitchcockian suspense, and the working-class characters just doing a job (except for Ash, they are not scientists or soldiers)---these were things never seen in earlier space movies. Today, people are jaded. The revelation of Ash was, I think, one of the most shocking moments in film history, and the 1979 audience cheered at the end. The practical effects are still great today---some of the best ever done.
The alien was resting or sleeping in the shuttle after having eaten a big meal, just like many animals do.
BTW, the main idea was very similar to “It, the Terror from Beyond Space” (1958). Also, author A.E. Van Vogt sued the producers of “Alien” because of its similarity to his famous 1939 story, “Black Destroyer.” Van Vogt got a settlement, rumored to be half a million dollars.

Two things that always get me:
    1. People are always mad that Ash tells Parker not to try to kill the baby Xenomorph after the chestburst scene. Did they miss the whole “acid blood” summit? As a 12 year old my immediate reaction was the same as Ash’s, just because I remembered the acid blood.
    2. The Xenomorph was never going to get back into the shuttle once it was outside, unless it went back in through the door it went out. I don’t understand why folks don’t realize that the engine port is not a way into the shuttle, and that if the Xenomorph was as smart as they are depicted to be in later films, it wouldn’t have even entertained reentry into the shuttle by that port.
Great reaction, and so glad to see young folks really appreciate the artistry involved in filming these stories “the old-fashioned way”.
I’m 100% “team Director’s cut” when it comes to Aliens. I saw the theatrical cut IN the theater in 1986, and when I saw the Director’s Cut years later I felt kinda ripped off that that wasn’t the version I got to see back in the day. That’s pretty rare for me, but others obviously disagree. I much prefer the theatrical cuts of The Exorcist and Apocalypse Now, so it’s not just that I like the longer version of everything.

The last part of Brett’s death scene was deleted for the theatrical release. It has been restored in the director’s cut. Parker and Ripley actually witness his death. If you slow down the frame rate in the theatrical release, you can briefly see Parker in the background, standing in the doorway to the landing strut.

One of the funniest things about this reaction is the continuous amazement at how good the movie looked having been made in 1979. For those of us who were around to experience "2001: A Space Odyssey," which came out in 1968, the astonishment that something made in 1979 could look this good just makes me smile. Two things to know. In the Director's Cut, Ripley and Parker do run in to the room where Bret is attacked, just in time to see him being carried away. Second, after priming the ship to explode, Ripley enters the Alien's nest. And encounters Bret, who is in a cocoon that is using hm as raw material, to breed another Facehugger. That is intended for Dallas who is also there, glued to the wall. Ripley then torches them both in an act of mercy.

The reason she went to stop the self destruct: the alien was in the doorway leading into the life shuttle. No way around it. So she wanted to restart the meltdown sequence and give herself more time for hopefully the alien to move. But it failed so she had to just book it and luckily, the alien was not in the way the second time. Also the aliens don’t eat like we do, so the cat was in no danger. It’s not large enough to be a viable host, which is all it really cares about.
Also they’re very smart, in later movies they show great intelligence and hatch escape plans quite frequently. The alien queens have above genius level intellect. And they can communicate telepathically to others around them, with this they can coordinate attacks and plans quite well (the Queen can use this on a planet wide scale to control the whole hive)

    • @AstroKrushReactions
      @AstroKrushReactions  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah! That’s what we were wondering too! If the xenomorphs could affect an animal, because in this one the alien disregards the cat. Even this one seemed pretty smart, but in Romulus, they seem VERY smart! I’d assume it’s because this one was barely alive to really do or learn anything but we’re not sure…all together this movie was a masterpiece! Really want to watch the next one! ‘Aliens’ I believe is the name of it!

Jones, also referred as Jonesy, was a cat kept aboard the USCSS Nostromo as Ellen Ripley's pet. While the cat's official purpose was to control rodents aboard the ship, he also served as a source of relaxation and entertainment for the crew like a theory animal. So, this was the reason why a cat was brought into outer space.

Nope, they are not researchers, they just drive the cargo ship full of raw ore. Space truckers. I watched Alien when I was twelve and it quickly became one of my favorite sci-fi horror movies next to The Thing. The follow up movies they are making nowadays, like Alien: Romulus, pale in comparison. They can learn a lot by going back to these older classics and seeing how it is really supposed to be done.
That facehugger was constructed with oysters, so you were pretty close when you said it looked like a mussel.
The Alien is not male nor female, they are just hermaphroditic parasites. That they insert material into a host to parasitize it with a gene spliced larva that is a hybrid of the host does not necessarily mean that the interaction is anything but what you see some wasps do to a paralyzed spider.
Parker saw it when Brett screamed. He ran to see what was going on and saw it pulling him up into the air shaft. They never put that scene into the movie, but it was part of the script.
The initial Alien was supposed to have a venomous stinger like a wasp. It can sting a host to paralyze it. That was what they were trying to indicate by the tail stinging Lambert.

Overall though, this movie was amazing and a true masterpiece! Couldn’t even imagine how terrifying this would have been in theaters.

@@AstroKrushReactions Yeah, the scene with Lambert getting stung was actually used from a scene with Brett when the Alien attacked him, but they decided to use it for Lambert to show that Alien stung her. A lot of people think the alien SAed her due to the noises she made when she screamed, but it has no interest in that and does not have the biology anyways.
Alan Dean Foster wrote a rendition of Alien that has the scenes missing from the movie, but his descriptions of the Alien are a bit off since it does not have eyes.

The late '70s and '80s was the middle of the practical effects area before CGI took over. They also didn't just make endless prequels and sequels as shameless cash grabs like they do today. The movies that were released in theaters were solid. The studios didn't just greenlight crap movies with the hopes of enough people liking them or getting fooled by the trailers and the film critics to make money. These days, nearly as many movies get made just as tax write-offs as are actually made with the expectation of making a profit. When a studio is having cash flow problems these days, they just make a movie with a modest budget, over insure the movie and then never releaase it and take the tax writeoff and make more money with the tax writeoff than they would have expected to make by releasing the movie and doing all of the promotional stuff.

Your comment about how Ripley and Parker knew what the Xenomorph looked like after taking Brent, There is a cut scene where they come out just in time to watch the alien disappear along the roof with him and Parker screams his name. You should now watch the Director's Cut of it to see what they cut out.

You have to watch aliens (special edition) as its the best one.
If you think this had impressive production standards and special effects for 1979, then you need to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). It still looks good, even now.
Hell there are movies from the 1950s that look good: War Of The Worlds and Forbidden Planet for example, or epics like Ben Hur and Cleopatra.
The proliferation of CGI in the 90s changed movies I suppose.

You haven't even seen it yet. It's just been described as "huge" and "like a man". Put yourself in the shoes of the characters who were cargo haulers on a routine run. They were not trained for this at all. I hope you folks move on to other great movies from the 70s & 80s era, such as the Terminator franchise, the Rocky franchise (then Creed), Star Wars of course, Star Trek, and Blade Runner to just name a few. H R Giger was the artist behind "the Alien" creature. It was inspired by nightmares that he would sketch out upon waking.
Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
AND YOU THINK THIS IS JUST A MOVIE ?
Revelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
REMEMBER THE SCENE WITH DALLAS SAYING "KILL ME"?
6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
