      The most overlooked film ever

"Alien is a movie where nobody listens to the smart woman, and then they all die except for the smart woman and her cat. Four stars." best quote ever

I know it's just a funny meme and all that but I also think that's a generally uncharitable assessment of the film, considering they act pretty intelligently throughout the whole thing. Outside of Kane sticking his face near an Alien egg (which, while not the greatest decision in the world, it would be overzealous of the audience to expect him to know he's in a horror movie and therefore in imminent danger, and also he's wearing a fully enclosed spacesuit), nobody does anything particularly stupid. Most of the deaths come from a consequence of Ash sabotaging their plans (Dallas), the crew not recognizing the danger they're in (Kane and Brett), or running out of options (Parker and Lambert being cornered and unable to escape).
People like to quote The Thing as a good example of a "horror movie with only smart characters" but honestly I think the same accolade could easily go to this film as well.

Working in government, I relate to Ripley. I've been that person in the room saying NO that won't work, and here's my professional opinion about the thing you pay me to be a professional in, oh you're doing that thing anyway, ok great best of luck, too bad when it fails it'll hurt us all.

And everyone forgets the other really "smart" person in the film was Lambert, played by the wonderful Veronica Cartwright. It was Lambert who first raised concerns about heading towards and exploring the source of the "distress" signal / Derelict.
After discovering the "Space Jockey", wondering what the heck happened to the rest of the Derlelict's "crew", and seeing the explosive rupture in the Space Jockey's desiccated corpse/skeleton -- it was Lambert who says the famous dialogue: "Let's Get the Hell Outta Here".
Finally, after Dallas is killed in the air shafts, Lambert is the first to raise the possibility of abandoning the ship and escaping in the shuttle...although, at that moment in time, it was not a viable solution, due to the shuttle's crew-size limits.

We saw this movie in 1979 in The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Not only was it state of the art in terms of special effects, but it was the first movie EVER when a woman took on the man's leadership role & became the lone survivor. In those days, women were always killed off first in movies. The movie was fantastic. It was a great time to see movies in those days. Steven Spielberg was a young up incoming movie maker, he just put out Close Encounters. George Lucas just put out Star Wars & then ALIEN just came out. In those days we stood in line for 5+ hours & met countless interesting movie goers from all walks of life. Everyone screamed inside the movie theater when the Alien surprised us. Then everyone in the theater laughed at how it scared us. Then we all cheered & clapped when the movie ended to show our appreciation. You don't see that these days. . .

Probably need to explain for folks who don’t have cats what Jonesy was doing when the Alien attacked Brett.
Jonesy hissed at the Alien to show the Alien who is the top predator around here. (Cats are supremely confident in their hunting skills).
Once that was settled Jonesy watched the Alien attack Brett and probably gave the Alien a B- rating on his pouncing ability, (to slow, no rabbit kicking)
At the end on the way to the shuttle Jonesy indicated to the Alien he was lucky he was stuck in the cat carrier. The Alien realizing the truth in that statement left Jonesy alone.
There was one perfect organism on that ship and it wasn’t the Alien.

1:37 - The spaceship interior design of this movie is only rivaled by that of '2001: A Space Odyssey' in my opinion. I happend to have studied space technology and that's how I imagine possible future spaceships for long missions but realistically there will need to be elements that resemble home, like plants and things like that for the mental sanity.
4:58 - The ocean is scarier because you have the same feeling of nothingness, it's only of a different colour, but you do know it's full of things which will actively trying to kill you.
5:30 - Research suggests that if you happend to end up in space without a pressurized suit, you'd pass out within 10-15 seconds for a series of reasons, before suffocating or dying for lack of pressure. Not the worst way to go.
48:37 - By now probably somebody mentioned. That was a deleted scene from the original movie. The alien used Brett and Dallas to create more eggs through a process that is not explained or repeated in the sequels.

Great to see my favourite reaction channel watch one of my all time favourite movies. I must have seen it about 10 times, the best when it was restored in 4K and re-released in cinemas, the level of detail in the designs was amazing. A friend's father worked on the set design and she's incredibly proud of him.
There's a lot of interesting behind the scenes stuff on this film. Some of the crew worked on a version Dune that was going to be directed by Chilean surrealist Alejandro Jodorowsky that would have starred Orson Welles, Mick Jagger and Salvador Dali, with a Pink Floyd soundtrack. It is regarded as one of the best movies never made. There's a superb documentary about it. It was during the pre-production they found HR Giger, the uniquely creepy artist who designed the alien, facehugger and alien ship. It's worth checking out some of his art, there's even a café dedicated to him in his home country of Switzerland.
Jodorowsky's Dune (also the name of the documentary) ended up being too expensive so it got rejected by the studio but they held on to the rights. The lead designer Dan O Bannon was left broke and homeless after this, but inspired by his work on Dark Star with John Carpenter, he wrote the screenplay of Alien which he also supervised the visuals on, bringing back those from the Dune project, notably HR Giger. The studio initially rejected Giger because his work was deemed too unsavoury, but director Ridley Scott insisted he wouldn't make it otherwise.
So thanks to Jodorowsky's failed Dune project we now have Alien. Dune went on to be directed by David Lynch, who disowned it blaming studio control, but it was brilliantly updated recently by Denis Villeneuve.
As for Alien, it went on to spawn one of the greatest sequels ever made, which is my personal number one favourite film, Aliens, but I love both equally for different reasons. It's often a debate among fans as to which is their preferred movie. Both often feature in all time best lists. The ones after don't quite live up to the same levels in my opinion but you may enjoy them. I could talk more for hours about it!
I think you know what you need to watch next!

To be fair, Bret and Parker did not really have a say and Parker actually backed Ripley up saying she had a point about the Captain's order breaking the law. Parker is also the one who suggested they should immediately freeze Cain. This would have saved their lives as well. While that would endanger all of the earth by allowing the corporation to get the specimen. That is the worst-case scenario. Another scenario would have been that in isolated space labs under controlled conditions, a team of scientists and medical personnel may have devised a way to remove the parasite, identify the embryo it implanted, and remove it as well. Even if unable to do so and Cain still lost his life. The xenomorph may have been isolated and held in secure confinement at an isolated and secure space lab location. Even doomsday scenario and the lab is lost to the alien, you can remotely detonate it.
The point is that the story would have been very different had Ripley OR Parker been listened to. Brett was Parker's yes man so he also was one who died because of the Captain and Ash's decision. It was not the whole crew who broke quarantine procedures. Parker and Brett were the labor they completed their job description and more. They died because of the Captain's stupidity and Ash's betrayal.

The first Alien movie I watched was Aliens. And I was very young. We watched it at home, so it was either on TV or it was a VHS copy, I can’t remember. But I remember when the chest bursted scene happened very very clearly. My mom tried to cover my eyes with her hand, but there were pretty large gaps between her fingers. So I saw everything….. that night I couldn’t sleep and pulled every stuffed animal I had (and I had a lot) and piled them into my bed hoping the “alien” wouldn’t see me in the middle of them all…… 😂 Years later I went back to watch Alien, even knowing what was coming it scared the crap out of me.

"This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off."
Alien is a fantastic film. What makes "Alien" a cut above 99% of the Sci-Fi films is the acting and the characters. No one is thumping their chest how great they're, there's no super heroes, there's no sappy love interests, the banter, the dialogue is what you'd expect on a space shuttle mission once they are up and Ridley Scott went for straight steel cold realism.
Alien has been able to achieve such lifelike characters that seem like actual people. Fantastically atmospheric, chilling and terrifying even now, the story holds up incredibly well. The special effects were incredible for the time, no wonder the franchise is still in demand, though sadly nowhere near the quality of this one or its amazing successor.
Overall, Alien remains one of the most original, terrifying films of all time and everything is so carefully, expertly constructed to the point that repeated viewings are just as good as the first and the atmosphere, along with the amazing sets, is real shocker, which few films have managed to create the same kind eerie feeling.
