flew to Matagorda island there with a bunch of buddies in 3 airplanes once to that abandoned military airport. Runway a little rough but it was ok. There were some buildings still left at the time...it was 1982 I think. Surfed all day. Flew back to Houston that afternoon.
😂its a place where the water is brown and you better bring everything you need no store for miles bring a rope or chain and a shovel in case you get stuck in the sand hopefully someone will help if you can find anyone a shovel hopefully can help i got stuck and a cold front came in it blew my campsite away nothing i could do except wait for morning when woke up ice was on my feet from being wet good thing i was wearing a full wetsuit a with boots gloves and hat a car came at daybreak i emptied my pockets it was a jeep he pulled me to the road at the Colorado river i drove straight home never turned off the s 10 pickup i was driving i had a credit card for gas it was a close call with death the waves were great before sunset all i can say is be prepared its a place with very few people
That sounds like a gnarly experience. Glad everything was OK. Totally agree that any time you are remote with no roads except the beach, you need to be prepared. Hope you scored some of those remote waves and a beautiful sunset🤙
Been going to the Tx coast forever. Never saw such good looking surf. Wow. I would hop in my truck and head down from Austin if this what is breaking
Makes wanna go again haven't been since Father's Day 2006. In the late 90's used to go every weekend.

Same island but different spot matagorda beach is close to baycity.tx airstrip is close to port oconner can only get there by boat or plane.
