What's always been annoying about Marvel is mutants are hated but other people with powers aren't. It makes no sense. Both are different but one is accepted.
It's because of what mutants represent: the next stage of human evolution. Superpowers in general are usually random, a result of outside factors or from a specific discipline, such as a science experiment or magical training. There is no inherent connective tissue there. Mutation is a much more existential threat, because it implies that someone without the x-gene is an inferior being by NATURE and destined to be dominated/replaced by mutants, who are a growing population. Remember that 'evil' mutants like OG Magneto even campaigned off of this belief, calling mutants "homo-superior" and an inevitability. That belief is what leads to fear, which leads to hatred. Mutants are different from humans at a genetic level, not a result of outside factors like radiation or alien technology. You say people with powers are accepted, but that isn't always the case either. There has always been a lot of distrust of the superhero community at large (J. Jonah, General Ross, Civil War/registration, Jim Jaspers, etc.) but again, every superhero is an individual case; a coincidence of events that can theoretically be addressed or controlled. Mutants are a wave of genetic change that show no signs of stopping, and will eventually overcome and replace non-mutants. It's still a fair argument to say people would treat these groups similarly since we have no real way of knowing in the real world, but there are deep and philosophical differences between their existence to consider. The reasons I stated above are why I buy into the different treatment of the groups by the regular population.
