The most profound and honest statement in this clip is when Stephen Jones states: ".....there is cruelty in me". This is the most cathartic and meaningful statement I've heard from anyone involved in Jonestown. What human being has not engaged in cruelty? How many then are honest about it? Damn few. Many others were caught up and took part in Jim Jones' cruelty and I have the utmost respect for his honesty.
@Christine Mills now that we are certain that other people helped Jones the conversation branches off into how much did they help Jones and what did they do? How are a thousand people executed in such a efficient like nazi-like manner without expert logistical help? And only Larry Layton was prosecuted. I guarantee you there are more out there.
@Christine Mills I think Jim was such a controlling person that he affected his wife and his son. He all controlled them in an environment of paranoia. he would have these White Nights where they would spend the entire night practicing a scenario in which their area was under siege. Jim was controlling to his children and threatened violence on them. You either do what he said or suffered the consequences. The truth is there were very few people loyal to Jim but they were also loyal to the point beyond reason. Stephan's mother was too and her one break from that loyalty was sending out Stephan to play a basketball tournament with their team... a move that ultimately saved him. All of them were victims, all except Jim.

People forget that Jim Jones was so successful in creating an environment of paranoia and fear that people were helpless to fight against him. The People's Temple was in the middle of nowhere. If they rebelled, where would they do. A lot of those people who did violent acts were doing it because they had to or they has to suffer the same consequences. Btw, Larry Layton was pardoned. His charges were not related to the Jonestown violence but on Congressman Ryan's assassination.

Debbie Layton only does these interviews for money. I think all these people were probably paid for their interviews. I guess that is ok in some respects, but it still gives me the creeps for some reason. Peoples Temple had millions of dollars, and, here, though indirectly, money is still being made. They all say they were "victims", but many were quick to jump on the People's Temple hierarchy of power. The Layton family was heavily involved, including financially, in the Peoples Temple. Her brother Larry was part of the Red Brigade that shot up the airstrip where Congressman Ryan was assassinated. Why this educated, old-money family was involved with this lunatic that pulls chicken livers out of people is one of many bizarre, unanswered questions of Jonestown. Why is Debbie Layton, who I believe was educated in a private school in England, having sex with this bat-shit crazy criminal in the back of a bus? After she was screwed by Jones (as she says), she went on to do top level financial/logistical work for Jones. Did she help with the complex logistics of moving all the poor people into the deep Amazon jungle? It's also interesting how most of the people that held executive positions and "escaped" were white. Layton was also married to this shadowy dude name Blakey. He was all up in Jonestown also. Jones made them "divorce" and they were still happy to do whatever Jones wanted. It seems the more Jones "screwed" people the more they did for him. You would think they would RUN LIKE HELL IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION! But no, they followed him into the jungle. Like the simple "lone crazed killer" explanation for the Kennedy assassination, we have this "lone crazed maniac" explanation for Jonestown. It's a lot more complicated than this. We still don't have the whole story here.
Finally somebody asking all the right questions! I've been asking for years, how the hayle was he able to acquire colossal amounts of prescription drugs to fill several warehouses?? This man had quaaludes, barbiturates, valium, morphine, demoral, stimulants etc. I've seen footage of the drug warehouses, so it's documented and real!
There's no way in hayle he got his hands on large quantities of drugs like that without some high powered help....the kind that's wealthy and powerful!
