I played this song my senior year at Alpena High School, MI. Everywhere we went we got straight 1's. Vesuvius was one of our favorites to play. The 1st trumpet part was and still is one of the funnest parts to play.
I love this piece!! I played piccolo in Louisville Male High School's Symphonic Band & this was probably one of my favorite pieces when we traveled for competitions/conferences!!!
Quite a moving video, and the music is excellent. Our son's high school marching band performed this last year. Now, I too can't get the music out of my head, and I love it!
My HS Symphonic band played this two years ago, and my older bro had the main trombone piece. I was only a freshy at the time, but we all loved playing it. Ticheli writes such amazing music, and this is one of, if not the best, in my mind. As to all those that are playing it now, good luck, and to those that got a chance to play it, congrats, for you played an epic piece of music.
Played this song this year in Honor Band (students in the conference are nominated and come together, yadda yadda). I looooove flutter-tonguing! There aren't many songs that let you do it, but this one does.
This is the 2000 Virginia All State Band (High School) Performing at JMU. This was played after coming together for only 2 days to learn the music - I played in this performance. I forget who the director was that year, but this is a fantastic piece that is a load of fun to play.
i played this when i was 14 i play clarinet and this was the hardest and only song i remember from playing 7 years of music, we won first at states with this song it was amazing.. anyone in music should try it!!!!
I played this song my junior year in high school (percussionist) and Wild Knights this year as a freshman in college. For the ABA convention the Texas A&M band is going to be premiering his newest piece, Playing With Fire. I can already tell you it's going to be epic.
i love this song! its so dramatic... im only 15 and im still amazed that im able to follow this... my high school is playing it for our spribg concert :D
I play bassoon as my primary instrument, but euphonium is my secondary for marching band, and tuba is my 3rd instrument. This is one of my favorite pieces to play, period. So fun. And hell yeah, low brass represent!
The South View High Wind Ensemble is playing this song this year. It's great and fun to play. A challenge and very awesome sounding. If you listen closely near the end you can hear the French Horns duo.
i know!!!!! i was waiting for the epic BANG at the end and u leave out the 288th measure! but i still love the recording!! thanks for puttng it on hear with pics!
Oh. And my school, SVHS, in Hope Mills NC is playing this as our last song for Contest. We're playing Rolling Thunder (hurts my damn jaws with the offbeats.), Festive Overture (love the trumpet/french horn duo.), and then this. ^.=.^
yeah, my high school band played this we thought it was insane. We used to audition for MMEA(missouri music educators asociation) our entire band went with this song, one of the top memories of high school.
I played this song in high school. one of my favorite and one of the harder songs we played. i had the honor of playing 4th trombone, funner then 1st in my onpinion, and on my senior year the tuba, not as easy as i thought but it was still fun and difficult. and i agree this is one of the funnest songs to play although.
I can't imagine marching to something like 9/8 or whatever this song starts in. It's an amazingly fun song to play though, I will say that. Haven't played it since high school, but then again, I haven't picked up my trumpet since then. :)
loved this song. we're supposed to play it for district competition but they removed from the list. we played it for a concert anyway. still this is great.
I played this song in band last year. It is frieken amazing. I also met Frank Ticheli at WIBC this year. He's crazy. His new song Wild Nights, is frieken INSANE! It is so f***ing hard. It gives me a headache to look at! lol
My director at my high school was a huge fan of Ticheli. We played so many pieces by him that it was not funny. Blue Shades and Vesuvius are two that come to mind right away. We were a pretty great band and these songs were challenging and fun to play.
Well this is freakin awesome. My high school band's getting the music for it on Monday for our end of year "concert." Sounds like a challenge (especially since we have to memorize it).
haha my hs band played this back in 04. I was 1st chair clarinet and know from experience how challenging this song is. And I sympathize with your wish, but that will always be the case.
loved the flutter tounge the flutes have (even if no one hears it lol). i loved playing that part cause i've never had a flutter tounge cue in a piece of music before =D
So, we have this in our music library right? Well, it wasn't open and I asked if I could open it to see what it looked like. It looked intense, I youtubed it...came back got the oboe part. Learned it. Now I'm asking for it to be played. There is no way I'm graduating without playing this. NOWAY.
I fucking love this song. I can't even contain myself!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am in the Purdue University Concert Band, and we are playing this at our next concert!
Vesuvius is a great piece of literature. I almost had the pleasure of playing it with my group a couple of years ago but we played the Shenadoah by Ticheli instead.
6:00 and after is one of my favorite sections. also, when we played this at NE Missouri districts, I always thought 7:42 sounded much like an excerpt from a field show.
9/8 is one heck of a way to count a song. But is so fun to play. I personally think fate of the gods is also a great song we're playing both in concert band this year. Hey and jazz band geeks want a good song definitly look up " walkin' and swing' " its so much fun to play.
Gah, now I'm gonna be running around all day with the time signature in my head! One-Two One-Two-Three One-Two One-Two! One-Two One-Two-Three One-Two One-Two! One-Two One-Two-Three One-Two One-Two!
Why would a 15 year old be unable to follow the song? I don't see a need to advertise how young you are so people can point out how wonderful you are for appreciating something good, you're great for being in some great stuff regardless of your age.
I've seen quite a few comments on how to march this piece, and just wanted to throw my two cents in. My school marched parts of this piece for their show (the year before I went there), and did the 9/8 as 2-3-2-2 just fine. It's really not as hard to do 2-3-2-2 as one might think.
reading all of these comments, no one but us band peoples would truly understand. not that there's anything wrong with that. i mean this music totally rocks. i wish i could have marched it in high school. then again, it was a challenge for everyone to just sit and play with it. very awesome job with the video though. GO SAXYAPHONES!!!!:)
I played this song my senior year at Alpena High School, MI. Everywhere we went we got straight 1's. Vesuvius was one of our favorites to play. The 1st trumpet part was and still is one of the funnest parts to play.

Ashley Britton was the piccolo pice challenging? We're playing this our upcoming concert season and im kind of intimadated by how it sounds xD
Quite a moving video, and the music is excellent. Our son's high school marching band performed this last year. Now, I too can't get the music out of my head, and I love it!

I had this song during marching band season of my freshmen year. I had such a blast being a part of the band at that time!
This is the 2000 Virginia All State Band (High School) Performing at JMU. This was played after coming together for only 2 days to learn the music - I played in this performance. I forget who the director was that year, but this is a fantastic piece that is a load of fun to play.
i played alto sax for this song a few years ago and my band is playing it again but now I'm on tenor sax. Definitely my favorite band piece.
i played this when i was 14 i play clarinet and this was the hardest and only song i remember from playing 7 years of music, we won first at states with this song it was amazing.. anyone in music should try it!!!!

We're putting this song together for our next Wind Ensemble concert. It's a beast in counting. Should be fun though. Great work!
I played this song in high school. one of my favorite and one of the harder songs we played. i had the honor of playing 4th trombone, funner then 1st in my onpinion, and on my senior year the tuba, not as easy as i thought but it was still fun and difficult. and i agree this is one of the funnest songs to play although.

also, when we played this at NE Missouri districts, I always thought 7:42 sounded much like an excerpt from a field show.
The low brass/low winds in this piece have some cool parts. I myself play tenor sax and our band is working on this piece for UIL.

Frank Ticheli is an awesome composer. He even makes the 3rd trombone part interesting.
I've seen quite a few comments on how to march this piece, and just wanted to throw my two cents in. My school marched parts of this piece for their show (the year before I went there), and did the 9/8 as 2-3-2-2 just fine. It's really not as hard to do 2-3-2-2 as one might think.
