You all are probably going to laugh at me, but the most recent album that blew me away, was Royal Blood's debut.
I live in the U.S. In 2014, and it felt like guitar driven pop rock and alternative was dying (still is). Royal Blood comes along with Figure It Out, Out if the Black, Little Monster, Ten Tonne Skeleton, etc, and I was blown away. I pre-ordered the album after listening to Figure It Out non-stop for a week or so.
At the time, it was an answer to what I needed in my heart.

I gotta go with Evanescence's debut album Fallen. Never really listened to alternative rock before and I fell in love with the band. Amy Lee's voice in particular.

Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns. I love Linkin Park but I heard negative stuff about A Thousand Suns, people saying that they have gone too electric and lost their metal. However, I listened to the album, brought the CD and loved it. It is out there and clearly a one off experimental album

If it's released by a major label, it's considered "Mainstream". If it gets regular radio play, it's also considered "mainstream". That said, the idiot who said "Vulfpeck was big in America", clearly has no fucking clue what, 1, "mainstream" means, and 2, what "big in America" means. Out of their 4 albums, they've only had 2 even make the top 200 when they debuted (10, 46) and in terms of overall sales they had one album come in as high as 76th. No other album even charted.

Queens of the Stone Age ...Like Clockwork. I was 13 when it came out and the only music I had really listened to before that was the popular pop music out at the time. Now the music I listen to I couldn’t live without and it’s all because of that album that expanded my music taste.

Three biggest surprises that are very good, Big Wreck, "Albatross", didn't even know they got back together, Charlie Sexton, "Cruel and Gentle Things", an album to sit back and just enjoy the day. and Doyle Bramhall II, "Rich Man". Bluesy, Soul driven album with a little funk for added flavor.

The album that blew me away was BMTH's That's The Spirit, a few years back. I remember when Sempiternal came out, it was that big but I just couldn't get into them at that time, and anything before Sempiternal I hated so I just left them there. Fast forward to 2016, That's The Spirit was out and doing really well, the umbrella symbol kept popping up everywhere so eventually I was like "okay, let's see what the fuss is about" I remember wincing listening to it first thinking "when's the mindless screaming going to start", but before I knew I fell so hard for this album, nothing had ever quite gotten to me like that before, it was amazing. It was during the time my mom was diagnosed with cancer and I felt exhausted going home every day from the hospital, having to see her being slowly devoured by the cancer, that I'd pop That's The Spirit on and everything melted away and I felt amazing listening to it. Before long I was rocking out to Sempiternal and There Is A Hell and so on.
This year I think Northlane's Alien and Crown The Empire's Sudden Sky took me by surprise, two great albums and Tool's new song/upcoming album.

There’s a few that have blown me away over the years. Biggest and most important was Midian by Cradle of Filth.
No credit’s only album was great for me, reminded me of the great punk rock I grew up with but with a lot more aggression and I fell in love with it instantly.
Billie Eilish’ first record really changed something in me too, I heard it thinking it’s not something I should like, but I really loved the change in pace.

There are two albums in my collection that not only unexpectedly blew me away because I barely knew what was going to be on the album when I bought them but when I tell people I love these albums, they think I'm mental or making shit up.
LEN - Can't Stop The Bumrush:
..As in the album with Steal My Sunshine on it! That might be a cheesy 90s one hit wonder to most but that song had me in such a good mood that I decided to get the albums. The artwork was pretty alluring too. That album is so eclectic and well put together that it's actually a crime Marc Constanzo doesn't get enough respect as a producer and song writer. There's so many interesting sample usage, a Biz Markie cameo and practically every track is a different genre but equally great. LEN in general are underrated as they even had more shoegaze-y/grungey albums before that and releases afterwards which continue the genre-blending and happy vibes.
Vanilla Ice - Hard To Swallow:
I bought this totally out of curiosity after reading in the back of Rock Sound that it was coming out and meant to be "Korn-inspired". I waited and waited...I think it came to the UK later than release but I eventually found it in a Virgin Megastores (I think.) Quite possibly the most expensive album I ever bought but...FUCK IT'S GOOD. It's produced by Ross Robinson, it's got the Amen drummer on it and even features Casey Chaos on a couple of tracks, and Jimmy Pop of Bloodhound Gang... Musically it's still an amazing and pretty creative nu-metal/rap metal album. It's annoying to know that it was Ross Robinson's idea and Vanilla Ice went along with it unaware of nu-metal prior to this, but that just goes to show how great a producer Robinson is because it sounds so unique. I still don't think I've ever heard something like Stompin' Through The Bayou. I don't give much credit to Vanilla Ice for the album anymore but...still it's still great.

    Going all over the place:
Danzig - Danzig. Knowing where he came from with The Misfits and Samhain, this was a great turn. Not a bad song on the whole album.
Shooter Jennings & Hierophant - Black Ribbons. Take a country artist and have him make a "conspiracy theory" concept album. You have to listen to the album straight through, even though the songs themselves, which don't stick to one format, are all pretty solid.
Babymetal - Babymetal. First time I heard it, I had to pause the songs 3-4 time to ask myself what the hell I was listening to, but I couldn't stop. It's so bizarre and really launched a massive wave of Japanese kawaii-metal and all female metal bands into the US.
The Avett Brothers - True Sadness. Different approach to many of the songs, different production, pivot from some of their earlier approaches into a bit more mainstream, but still being "The Avett Brothers". Loved it

Growing up in the 90's and listening to Industrial Metal in the likes of 'Ministry' , 'Nine Inch Nails' , 'Fear Factory' , 'Pitch Shifter' and so on, I then stopped buying new music for a few years so wanted to find out what had happened to the scene in the 21st century. The album I was directed to was 'Combichrist' - 'What the F^^k is Wrong With You People?' and for the first time in years I felt future was here! 1. Saturday Night Fever (soundtrack), I hate Disco, but I like that album.

There's a few albums that could fit this for me, there's an awesome wave by alt j (which I listened to and recognised 3 or 4 songs and it was awesome), blackbird by alter bridge (it introduced me to the band and all of their music is amazing), evanescence's self titled album (as I thought evanescence had disappeared and would never come back and then they came back like no time passed at all), one by one by foo fighters (blew kid me's mind) silver side up by nickelback (this was before rockstar, this was during the time of how you remind me and while overplayed that was an incredible song, but the rest of the album is as good if not better), royal blood (was one of the best overall albums I've ever heard), superunknown by soundgarden (introduced me to chris cornell), the pick of destiny by tenacious d (raised my opinion of jack black incredibly) and all hope is gone by slipknot (showed me I could like slipknot).

For me it definitely Crybaby by Melanie Martinez. I had seen Martinez on The Voice and thought she had some talent but wasn't anything particularly special but on a whim I gave her debut album a try and I'm so glad I did. The entire album deals with deep subject matter but from a very childlike point of view. For instance the song Mrs. Potato Head is all about beauty culture and how it encourages young girls to these unreasonable expectations that often leads to unnecessary plastic surgeries. There is also Tag You're It which is about a creep that stalks, kidnaps and rapes the Crybaby character of the album. (Yeah, this album gets DARK when you analyze the lyrics)

Volbeat: outlaw gentlemen and shady ladies. Volbeat is a danish hard rock and metal band. It has a western theme throughout the album and every fucking song was so damn catchy in all the right ways. Unique voice and great song writing with vocal performances from king diamond and Sarah Blackwood. So good.

    Fight With Tools - Flobots
Political music rarely gets to me; as I normally just... am completely uninterested in the topics. It's a big reason why Rise Against has turned me off. But this album made me fall in love with Flobots in largely the same way I still actually really like RA. Obviously I first heard them through Handlebars so I had to check out the album it came from. It completely blew me out of the water and led to me spending a solid two months listening to basically nothing but Flobots. The closing song Rise exemplifies everything I seek out of rap and hip hop. It's got a solid beat, two amazing MCs with insane chemistry with each other, and has a positive message. This album was just start to finish what I show people when I want to tell them about just how good rap can be and I was so not expecting it out of a semi-one hit wonder. They're definitely one of my favourite hip hop acts to this day tbh.
and I mean, stand out tracks for me are Handlebars(duh), Rise, The Rhythm Method(Move!), and Stand Up.

Oh shit, I forgot: Mystery Skulls EP! I heard the song Money in a random ass TH-cam video which most of you have probably seen by now called Turntable Turnabout with Phoenix Wright stuff over the song. I loved the song and saw the bandcamp link in the description so I went and picked up the EP. I have bought every piece of music Mystery Skulls has put out since, so fucking good. His music (it's actually one dude) is best described as indie funk pop. It's amaze-balls.

Absolutely loving that you have finally made a music channel. Hope you don't mind me making a band suggestion to you guys and girls at whatculture.
I think you should check out a band called Dance Gavin Dance. (What a ridiculous name you might say)
But check them out. They are a post hardcore, math rock experimental rock band and meld all kind of genres of music very funky and melodic sometimes with huge breakdown of aggression. There are two vocalist one clean and one heavy vocalist. Will Swan the lead guitarist is just amazing using all kind of genres in to his music.
Please please please check them out start with the happiness album. The song Carl barker was what hooked me. Then look at the instant gratification album, then mothership. So so so good Amazing band with Loads of fantastic songs.

Nonstop Feeling is just a little bit better than T&S, in my opinion. I got into Angel Du$t a bit late but really love them. Could almost say that all their albums unexpectedly "blew me away". Never quite found the same magic with TUI but maybe I need to give them another go.
I am loving myself a bit of Slope at the moment - German band doing that similar sort of groovy Leeway-worship kind of stuff.
