    In this video, I go over how to create realistic-sounding orchestral instruments using just MIDI. I cover automation of dynamics, expression, modulation, breath control (for vibrato) for chordal pads, long notes, legatos, note repetition, and so much more...
    The samples used in this video are from Spitfire and Cinesamples, and I use Cubase as my DAW.

      @@CinematicComposing What if i told you we can do this all with one slider and have them all react in a different manner.. check out GrumpyMonkey plugins.. i'm using Niente and AutoVibrato to do just what I have said in this comments. it's amazing.. I am using the progressive vibrato setting in Auto Vibrato and i use Niente to control the Expression CC. These plugins have changed my life.. their plugin Roll control and Xfade are both really awesome as well. Highly recommend everyone look at these.

    Thanks Marc. As many have said, this is precisely what so many videos lack: a clear explanation of what, how and why. These are complicated tools, and content creators often forget that beginners don’t even know what are the right questions to ask - they just feel the pain of not knowing!

    To my knowledge, this is by far, the most detailed usage of automation to render strings more realistic. A tons of video just suggest use "automation" but no precise context or examples are presented. Well done!!!

    This is by far, the best video I've seen on the tube demonstrating expression with virtual libraries. Other videos I've seen start promoting overpriced (cc focused) midi controllers, and neglect explaining details on why/how to use dynamics/expression/vibrato competently/convincingly.

    not a classical composer by any means but we like having strings in our library compositions a lot for organic vibes and after watching this video a lot of stuff clicked for me that hadn't really before and a big part of that was those little stepped drops!! it really made things come to life as soon as I tried it on a string line. Cheers!!

    for years i've been used to just writing stuff by hand, but I'm starting to realize it might just be better to play stuff in. which is tough, because not only it's not what I'm used to, I'm not also that skilled in keyboard. it might take some trial end error, but probably less trial and error/time being wasted than writing midi data in.

  • @sleekitwan
    @sleekitwan ปีที่แล้ว

    Strongly agree with other comments, this is literally the missing link in representing virtual instruments as ‘real’. Great stuff. And the music vocabulary, useful too.

    great video. great tips and i learned a lot. i was already using volume automation for some expression but somehow it never occurred to me to automate vibrato, etc. too.
    and of course, the fact that you don't waste anyone's time cannot be understated. too many guides use too many words for too few ideas.
    btw i did a double take when you switched to staccato on the fly hahaha. great stuff.

    Hi Marc, I'm a composer focused in film scoring and I love your explanation here, it made me realize I've been trying to bring realism out of virtual instruments in the wrong way. I was curious if I could ask your recommendation for a control surface to use the latch function with automation, or if there are any pros or cons in your experience between different models and brands. I primarily use Logic Pro and Native Instruments for context. Thank you for any advice you can share, I hope to work alongside you one day!

      I have been searching for this also, started with the Akai midi mix; faders too short, got the Novation launch control; does not play well with logic, finally I think I found the answer, Presonus faderport 8; faders 100mm., once I found out from presonus how to get logic to recognize the cc's in midi mode (not clear in documentation or anywhere on line, and the customer support is not), finally it is doing what I want, and I can achieve the control I need. More than I wanted to spend, but you can also use it as a DAW controller and hopefully it will be helpful for mixing also.

    Great tips! Thank you! But I am having problem; when I look at dynamics (modulation) section in Key Editor there is always a part (just in the beginning) with missing modulation signals (dynamic knob of midi controller falls to zero when I restart track to listen). Then I draw it manually with the drawing tool. It is frustrating. Any solution?

    Thank you very much for the content, I would like to ask if this line that represents the dynamics, could be inserted after the execution of the song, why do I ask, there are pieces of music that require greater attention or perhaps need both hands, and the reaper program would have this function . thank you very much

    can you make a video about working with tempo across a whole arrangement? I like the chords and melodies i come up with but i can never work out how to work with tempo. If i record everything to a click it doesent have the ebb and flow i want but if i completely turn the click off and just play off feel it always becomes a disaster when i they to orchestrate more stuff ontop of what i played in. I know theres things like beat mapping but that only works when you have a steady pulse. Ive thought about recording everything to a click and just automating the tempo of the whole project after the fact but alot of the time when im playing off feel i switch up the time signature and phrasing for just a few bars and stuff like that and i feel like it would be tedious to automate everything after the fact. Thanks

    How do you add the effects? Are that "effect tracks"? I ask because I look for something like this. I always hack my scores into a notator like sibelius or dorico and want to apply all the libary things afterwards, but no idea how (working with Nuendo). I can read in a midi file and add plugins, but I want to add the effects with wheels or sliders afterwards as you show in the videos. Thanks for help!
