If I could watch ONE channel on TH-cam, it would be this one. I wish I could meet you and hug you senseless for how much you have taught me! Thank you, for all the effort and enthusiasm you put in.
Guy, it looks like you have written a teaser here for the tutorial that Native Instruments doesn't seem to want to provide: a tutorial on the Komplete Kontrol keyboard line, but oriented toward its use as a general MIDI controller rather than just as a Kontrol for the Native Instruments Komplete software bundle. I'd pay you well for a thorough review of all that. Along those lines, I am confused by the MIDI keyboard's dual use as a general MIDI controller versus its use as an electronic piano. As far as I understand it, a skilled pianist is exquisitely attuned to the velocity at which the hammer hits the strings. The N-I keyboards have weighted keys to more precisely simulate the feel of a real piano keyboard. Yet when such a keyboard is used to control an orchestral instrument, nobody seems to mention velocity at all, just CC1. I'm not even remotely an expert pianist, but if I WERE then I think that I would want dynamics to be some combination of velocity and CC1. Another topic for you: all those sparkly colored lights. Just eye candy or can they tell you something useful?
I recently discovered the joys of TouchOSC and resurrected a really old Android tablet that is now my dedicated MIDI CC controller. I also found the Spitfire BBC Orchestra TouchOSC files online so I really didn't have to program anything. The best $5 and one hour I have spent on all of this. Highly recommended!
I've watched a lot Guy's video's. This one was so useful. Very short but possibly the one that will make the most improvement for me. Really appreciate the energy and content.
I just got hold of a Leap Motion controller to control the various CCs in my orchestral plugins. It feels so much more natural just moving my hand expressively rather than fiddling with faders. I recommend it! It is fiddly to set up though.
Thanks Guy, great video! Quick question though, How do you get your keyboard to light up like that?? I own the S49 MKII keyboard and I can't seem to find the way to do this!
Hi Guy! Thanks for the info as always. A great app I found to use for faders is called Knob Lab. If you plug your Ipad into a mac and go the Utilities setting you'll find an option for Midi which will turn the ipad into a controller. You can then use Knob Lab to assign and control as many CC's as you want, similar to what you have on your keyboard there. Worth a look and only a couple of dollars.
Love your content, this is insanely helpful for someone starting out. thank you for what you do.... but what are you using to make your S88 mkII make random colors? I MUST KNOW
Dang it, Guy!!!! Thank you so much for ... well... just for being there.... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your videos... So much valuable information, and so many good chuckles 😅. Oh... BTW.... You were the very first person that popped up on my TH-cam feed back when I first started dabbling about with the thought of composition. I've been hooked evwr since 😊. Thanks again, and, as always, I'm looking forward to seeing your next video. Most respectfully, K
For those who don't have all the faders and pots, the identical results - if not even more precise - can be achieved by write/automation in the track or plugin itself.
You are right about the utility of faders for controlling CC's in real time. That is why I find the NI Kontrol keyboards, including my S49, disappointing. I've ordered an inexpensive Korg Nanocontrol 2 with eight faders just for that reason. Practically, you can only turn one knob at a time. With a fader you could use different fingers to control two or even three faders simultaneously.
You can also use a wifi controller like TouchOSC, Lemur or Open Stage Control (the best of the three [although not for the faint of heart]) and set up any number of CCs on your android tablet, phone, or iPad.
Great video as always. Guy can you make a Video about keeping the B Section interesting and not how to repeat a pattern over and over? I struggle with that a lot in my Orchestral music.
Thank you Guy, your videos are gold! Been meaning to ask, what is that blinky-winky gizmo perched on the left of your keyboard? I like gear with lots of lights!!! 😂
Guy, thank you very much for those videos. I am struggling with all those things so much... I'm slowly grasping all this melody and composition thing finally but I still fail at all the dynamics. Thank You so much.
Guy, I love the way you teach and you're sense of humor and the courage you have to laugh at yourself! I have a question if someone can answer. Rarely, I use the CC1 with sound on sound (cakewalk) after I recorded the notes. Is it ok? (I'm doing it when I can not play and use the CC1 at the same time.)
Since I used to play the guitar for several years before taking up music creation with a MIDI keyboard, I am totally used to using food switch pedals to affect the sound. Is there a good practice to "do it on the floor" so my hands can focus on playing? Like a foot operated fader controller device?
Good video. A quick tip for those who're on the market for a keyboard with faders to control the CCs: Chose one with the faders on the left, usualy we play with the right hand and thus we can manipulate CCs with the left one. I say that because my main keyboard is an Arturia Keylab and its faders are... on the right! and I'm often obliged to cross my hands when I want to play simultaneously the CC1 and the CC11. Consequently I'll maybe change it as soon I'll have the money for (or buy a dedicated "fader box" I'll put near my left hand).
@@tosvus Actually, as explained, that's the plan. As soon I'll have the money for this I'll buy a 88 keys without any control other than bend & MW and a seperate fader box with long travels.
Your videos always upgrades my level of songwriting. I love watching your videos, you make us laugh-- me and my 6 year old son.😄😁 Thanks for your lesson 👍🙏
really helpful thank you, just so i understand isnt this like velocity section in ableton? Would that be changing the same parameter "dynamics" in the vst? Thanks
I Love Guy and his tutorials! Very inspiring and I learn a lot. What DAW are you using ? I use Studio One 5.2. I assume I can get all of this knowledge to work within my DAW?
I notice that the releases of the Spitfire a26 horns feature quite a pitch fall-off, particularly when the release time is made smaller. I know virtually nothing about horn playing, but flute players are trained to keep that from happening. Is there a problem with the horn samples?
I'd been getting by with a cheap keystation keyboard with a modwheel for the last few years. But I just got an 88 key keyboard with proper key action or properly weighted keys. But it does not have a modwheel whereas my old cheap keyboard did have one and I used it a fare amount for string orchestras. I really want to use the new keyboard but the lack of modwheel is a huge hit. Does anyone have a tip or any suggestions. Or any recommendation for external controler that can be used as a modwheel? Thank you.
In more pop styles how could one incorporate dynamics? It seems like the produced / recorded modern tracks are more “blocky” with their dynamics. Any ideas?
Thanks for the great video. Do you or anyone else have recommendation for a cheap orchestral library up to 150$? I've seen a few but no idea if they support those dynamics
Yep it can, but if I recall correctly (I sold mine) when using it for that, my DAW (cubase) was not able to send info back to the M+ so if you at some point used the software to adjust dynamics for instance, the motorized fader would not move. Of course if you do everything on the controller you would be ok.
Hey Guys! I have a question, hope you can help me. When i am using my cc1 mod wheel in cubase with the bbc orchestra discover, everytime i stop the recording the dynamics go back to 0. does anyone knows this problem?
I use cakewalk and surge, I need to use the mod wheel for a project but it does not seem to be working, though it shows on the track when recording. I don't know what to do to get it working.
Is there a way to control dynamics and articulations live at the same time so you can do one take? If I'm using right hand for melody and left for dynamics, does anyone have a solution to control the articulations like perhaps pedals?
Some libraries use dynamic articulations, so depending on how fast or hard you press a key or depress it, it will try to intelligently use the one that is more suitable. There might be pedals out there that could do this. After all, it's just a matter of having them send the right midi cc. I know people using other devices like stream deck to do the same, but again that is hand controlled. You could also use something like a breath controller to control dynamics etc, keeping your left hand open to press the right articulation switch. Some pedals may also be able to control something like dynamics.
Ya, I kind of wish that Modulation controller can be tempo sync, there is nothing musical about how modulation is applied, unfortunately. I would prefer to see more accurate info rather than just lets raise the modulation controller a bit... I find it so random... not like playing an instrument... ?
OK so let's say you're getting on in years cannot get the hang of reading or writing music (and may not have the time to really get into it...) and unlikely considering diminishing brain power etc etc. What then? Where to start? 🤯
