I was 16 in 1967, and loved the song and organ. Now 2006 is 16 more years, but I CANNOT stop listening to this performance. Gary Brooker's still so expressive and powerful and his pian plus organ make it magnificent! The full orchesta was well deserved! ❤️ So sad it's RIP since we just lost Gary Brooker in February.

Listening to this always makes me cry and your facial expressions and body language tells me it moved you that way too. The first time I danced with a girl was to this song back in 1967 the girls name was Geraldine we dated for a while and drifted apart a few years later I danced to this song with another beautiful girl named Geraldine (not the same one) and I fell madly deeply in love with her and in 1974 she agreed to be my wife ❣ we are still married and living our dream but adly we're older now but hey we're still in 🥰 thanks for posting take some time and listen to salty sea dog I'm sure you'll like it

I didn't know he'd died. I feel ridiculously sad since I never actually met him. But the song "a whiter shade of pale" was one of the songs we listened to endlessly as teenagers so he feels like an old friend. Actually I was 12 in '67 so it's 55 years ago.

R.I.P. Two genre's met in Denmark and the result is what music is all about. Captivating? How about stunned silence?
Many people who can go back to the sixties say Gary's performance here in 2006 was better than his original version from about 40 years ago. He was tremendous and something else to consider while listening to this, it cannot be played without the organ taking center stage. Gary's vocals were a treasure, the sound of the organ divine and so unique and the lyrics have never been fully explained (on purpose) by the writer of the song and it will always remain a mystery and everyone seems comfortable with that.
Your friend deserves a call back. I don't think you'll ever forget this performance of A Whiter Shade Of Pale.

My father discovered Procol Harum in 1970. I was 10 years old at the time but my young ears were immediately attracted to the sound of Gary's voice. Every time I hear Gary sing I am transported back to the early 70's and my father and his friends sitting around passing a joint and discussing what they thought the meaning of the song he was singing at that time was. Not all memories of your parents doing drugs are good memories but the magic of Gary's voice will always make those memories good ones. RIP Gary.

Wow, just that smile on your face, ..., great! Thanks to you and your friend for choosing this performance.
Gary Brooker and Procol Harum were rather unique with roots in the blues and classical music with poetic and mysterious lyrics by their text writer Keith Reid.
From the same concert I can recommend Conquistador, a very different and up tempo song.
Thanks very much, have a nice weekend and regards from the Netherlands!

Gary was the same age as I so these are the songs I sang along with. When young people today hear the stuff we listened to from the late 60's to 80's listened to they are shocked to find out how old they are. When I was listening to Moody Blues once, a 19 year old young man was visiting one of my kids and picked up the disc case and saw a picture of the group on the back, and he said in a shocked voice, "These are old men!" I said, "Of course. We wrote the book." Now we call all that music classic rock, because those songs ARE classics.

Had the privilege of seeing Procol Harum perform at the Bal Tabarin Club in Downham, South London in June 1967.
This song was No. 1 at the time and the group played to a full house, just around 200 people!!

This was just before the band released "Pandora's Box" as a single. Didn't realise who he was at the time but whilst talking to my music teacher, he came across as a "Nice Bloke". Then again my music teacher at the time was a "bit of a babe" so that helped I suppose?

How often do you get a song which has sold 10million copies from an iconic performance and then you get a concert nearly 30 years later with another version which arguably is even better? Then the band continue to play together for a further 15years..... so 1967-2021

We also lost Mark Lanegan at the age of just 57, not as famous as Procal Harum, but he work is excellent. You should checkout Marks's song Wedding Dress; it is dark brooding and beautiful

He loved Bach. He wrote the music not the lyrics. His voice never failed him. The song was recorded I believe in 1969. This is 2006

And the reference to the Miller telling his tale has to be a reference to the Canterbury Tales.

Attempts to wrangle these lyrics into linear coherence are thwarted at every turn, in part by red herrings (Reid claimed that the line “As the miller told his tale” has nothing to do with Chaucer) and by the demands of pop radio (Two extra verses were excised to keep the running time low.)

Squirrel please listen to the original from 1967. Im a massive Beatles fan and I'd put any number of their songs as better than any other, but this track for me is the best of all.

All Procol Haram releases were on my favourite Deram label. Bear in mind that this arrangement sounds different from the single. Recommended from 1992 - Baby D - Let me be your fantasy. 12 inch version, not the edit ..

Loved it when the hammond riff came in & I could see the realisation on your face. The thing I loved about this performance is that despite his age he still hit the high notes with full power. Even Freddie mercury (an absolute hero) dropped down on some the high notes at the live aid concert. Please check this out dude. 'The great gig in the sky' from the pulse live concert. This will blow your balls off. th-cam.com/video/vWZ6hmHj2MA/w-d-xo.html

Freddy Mercury had a sour throat and was advised by his doctor not to perform. His voice was better and clearer on his last album - - and he had no problems with the high notes.

Yer dude, I knew he had a sore throat at that gig. Having done a plethora of studio work as well as live, one is allowed many attempts at getting things right. But I have to say that Freddie's vocals were spot on every time, sore throat or not. ✌

It would be interesting to hear what you think of a song done in a local British accent - Geordie (Newcastle). Could you make head or tail of it? The song is from Sting's fabulous album in which he tells the story of the death of shipbuilding in the North East. The album is The Last Ship and the song is called ''What Have We Got'?'.
It ties into the current problems the US miners are having with the mines being closed as well as shipbuilding. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you give it a go.

Ah, my mum's favourite! Lovely version. If you're going down the popular music mixed with an orchestra, shouldn't be long before you get to S&M, aka Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony! 🤘😆
