I'm 65 and this version of this song has become my favorite of all time. I never had one before so when I made this statement to myself about a year ago even I was surprised with the realization.
At my Junior Prom we would dance to this song and also Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin, these two songs were known in the locker room as panty droppers. lol
I was 13 in 1967 and I had the same awestruck reaction to this song then as I do now to this live version. This song is a masterpiece, Gary's voice is stellar, and that Hammond organ played the greatest organ riff in rock and roll.........
The sounds from that Hammond Organ could really make a song with a competent player and the right sort of tune. In many ways similar to a good Sax player which seem much rarer these days.
Boy that was refreshing. Having a couple of spring chickens that were around like I was in 67 when this masterpiece came out and appreciate great music. This was by far, the best performance ever of this iconic song. Gary's voice got better as he aged, which few artists can claim. Thank you young ladies.
I saw Procol Harum on tour around 1973 and they were fantastic. So was the opening act, the mostly unknown Gentle Giant. Thanks for keeping this great music alive, and best wishes for this channel.
Just found you two grannies!!! This should be interesting....I'm a granny too and I was 15 when this song was "born" in 1967!!! It will stand the test of time and be here for all eternity!!! I hope you remember and love it!!!!🎶🎼🎵🎤🎹🎸🥁🎷🎻🎺 Not shutting his eyes all the time....he's looking down at the keyboard!!!😉😉😉
One of my ATF (All Time Favorites) ... back in 1967 .... let's see ... I formed my first group back in High School ..... Still into music 50+ years later .. love your channel girls ...... Stu "Bear"
Once heard, never forgotten. Timeless Classic! - So many great songs in their catalogue. Another favourite of mine is "Conquistador" (Live version from Edmonton, Alberta). - Long history to the band too, going back before they became Procol Harum. Robin Trower was once part of the line-up. He left to go in a totally different direction. "Bridge Of Sighs" is definitely worth checking out.
Thanks Bill. I agree, this song is so hauntingly beautiful how could you ever forget it? Even without the great orchestral accompaniment it’s amazing. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
It came out in 1967 I was 19 years old The lead singer is Gary Brewer,he passed away February 2022 . I loved the group,he was a very caring person, and he will be missed by millions of his fans.Msy God Bless him!
JUST SUBSCRIBED Grannies. Your channel just came up on my home page today and I love this song, esp. this 2006 version. Gary Brooker still sounds as good now if not better than when I was a teen. I went back and watched the Meatloaf and Heart concerts, some more classics. I have been following the career of a young prodigy singer by the name of Angelina Jordan, who is now 15 years old. She won Norway's Got Talent (NGT) at age 8 and appeared last January 2020 on America's Got Talent with her rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the age of 13 just a few weeks before turning 14. She received the golden buzzer and a shout out from Queen for her rendition. She went viral on NGT on her first audition song at the age of 7 singing Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" and ended the show a few weeks later with "Summertime". Angelina is an "old soul" and she has over 150 videos covering mostly classic songs from the 30's to the70's. She has millions of loyal followers worldwide that are mostly in the 50+ age range. You will not believe the talent of this young lady that signed with Republic Records last year as a "high priority" artist. Republic agreed to let her finish high school before an all out promotion. I suggest her to you because you are "retro" and so is Angelina at least until she hits the big time which should be soon. I recommend you react to her Bohemian Rhapsody performance and you will see a huge following flock to your channel and I guarantee you won't be disappointed in this rising star. You can check around YT and see how much she has been viewed by reactors. Once you hear her you'll want more. Hope you read this and try Angelina Jordan. Sincerely.....Cheers from Florida
Loved the mellow vibe in this reaction. ❤️ 👍 I wasn't born until 5 years after this song came out, but it's always been a favorite since I first heard it as a young girl. So haunting and deliberate. Thanks for another great reaction. #GrannySquad
The first concert I ever went to was Procol Harem in England back in 1975 when I was sixteen and I went with some friends from school. Fantastic! Loved this song ever since and especially this beautiful version with a full orchestra and choir. Thanks for your reactions and keep them coming with such great music.
I just came across your channel ladies, love your reaction to this song. Although I was only 3 years old when this song came out, I have only recently come across this great song again and remembered how much I loved it and still do ❤
I was two when this song came out and I discovered it later. I've loved it since I first heard it but always smile when he talks about the miller telling his tale. I'm a classic literature nerd, too, and I laughed out loud when I got to The Miller's Tale when reading The Cantertbury Tales for the first time. Love this new channel (love the old one, too). Now, back to binging you reactions here.
I see, Cyn, ya'r a secret porn reader, disguised as literaiture, eh ? (As in Chaucer, just frolicking dear) Apparently, there's been more "left out" as left in. Abridgement, big time. The seething Papists in Rome saw to that.
This is the song you play when you want to slow dance with your favorite sweetie. I heard this song at almost every wedding I went to in the 70's and 80's.
I’m fifty years old and I’ve always loved this song and music from this era. The orchestra takes it to the next level! I’m new to the channel. My dad introduced me to this era and of course the Beatles. I lost him in 2019. I use to sit with him and react to his music just like you too. Thank you so much I love your vibe and you helped me miss my dad a little a less. ❤️❤️
RIP Gary Brooker 1945 - 2022 Step 1 - Orchestra prelude Step 2 - Gary Brooker and orchestra Step 3 - Gary Brooker + orchestra + band (Procol Harum) + choir AMAZING! (PROCOL HARUM is a latin expression that means "beyond these things")
I was 16 in 1967! Loved it especially the organ, but Gary Broker's piano and organ so complement one another! 71 now, one of my hobbies is watching reactions to songs that are like mine and also draw my attention to details I'd missed.
The first time I heard this was in an NBC special called 'The 10th Kingdom' it was a fantasy miniseries. Mushrooms sang this in a place called Shadow Swamp haha.
Of course this song is from the 60’s and this group much older when they did this particular performance of it, but they didn’t miss a beat. Sounds even better than the original with the addition of the orchestra. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your continual support Debbie. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
Your Grandgrandpa here: You don't no this song? Under was for a stone live you two!!! Every Gig with my Band, on the Ending from the Gig - the Hammond do the Intro an y ( Bass) was singing the Song. ( After: Thank-you for coming. Everybody stay save to night)
Oh I knew the song, I said so and Granny Haze knew it after it started, but we had never seen this video for it since they were so much older than when the originally recorded it. We’re glad you enjoyed it. It’s an amazing song. Keep on rocking “babies.” ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻😂
Came across your channel by accident - I Love It. Your 530 subscribers just went up to 531. Listening to Gary's voice verifies the saying ...."improving with age". I think he sounds better now. Also, you mentioned about the organ. Nothing can equal the sound of the big old Hammond Organ that was so prevalent back in the 60's & 70's.
Thanks babies. We’re so glad to have you hear. Welcome to the Granny Squad. Yes, that organ gives it that unique 60’s sound for sure. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
From the same concert you should also watch “A Salty Dog”, a song of the sailors charting the oceans of old that is truly breathtaking! You will NOT be sorry! Gary Brooker is the only remaining member of Procol Harum. That voice speaks to all generations!
I was 13, and loved so much of the great music we were blessed with. Maybe didn't know how blessed until it was pretty much gone the way of smoke, mirrors, and autotune. Love your reactions! Classic rock rocks!
Great song. What I was doing in the 60's? I was being born, lol. Bands I like you ladies to react to? Wow, so many. Here's a few suggestions. Bad Company, The Beatles, Blondie, Bob Seger, BOC, Boston, BTO, Carpenters, The Cars, CCR, Cheap Trick, Chicago. Deep Purple, Dire Straits, The Doors, ELO, Foghat, Foreigner, Fuel, Grand Funk Railroad, Heart, Journey, Kansas, Led Zepplin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Police, The Moody Blues, Pink, Pink Floyd, Queen, Queensryche, REM, REO Speedwagon, Rod Stewart, Rush, Santana, Seether, Simon & Garfunkel, Smashing Pumpkins, Steely Dan, Scorpions, Staind, Stone Temple Pilots, Styx, Supertramp, Three Doors Down, U2, The Who, Yes, ZZ Top
When you called this a "hippie song" I had to laugh. The music is based on Bach's Air On A G-String and the lyrics have multiple references to classic literature. I just stumbled across your channel tonight and subscribed.
The song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach although it makes references to both pieces, & regarding "the miller told his tale" Keith Reid has explained he'd never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote the song.
It came out in 1967 and it was awesome to hear how good they still were when they did this performance so many years later. Glad you enjoyed it and keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
I would like to adopt you as my grannies! My mother is with 77 (I think) a little bit older than you and has no idea about good rock!!! Keep on Ladies!!! Greetings from Austria, Bless you!!!
Greetings Austria. Yup, Mom is a little bit older than us but not that much. Perhaps if she heard this version with the orchestra accompaniment she’d appreciate it a little more. It’s so beautiful. Thanks for your comments and we’re sending love and greetings to all of our friends in Austria. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
I agree. This is just beautiful & the addition of the orchestra was an awesome touch. Glad you enjoyed it & keep on rocking babies. Happy Holidays ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻💚❤️
Welcome, Retro Grannies, to the wonderful world of TH-cam music reactions. Can't wait to see more of you two. You're just getting started and I wish you much success with your channel. My special request vocal groups are Carpenters, Bee Gees, and The Righteous Brothers. Bring it on!!!!
Thanks so much Mary for your warm welcome. We’re really enjoying this channel and this wonderful era of music. In case you don’t know and you may be interested, we have another channel where we also react to metal and rock music too. That was actually our first channel and it’s been up about 16 months now and we can proudly say we have 168k subs there. Please check out Two Rocking Grannies too. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶🤟🏻💖
It was 1967, I was 3 and this was a massive hit. As time slipped by, the song became a classic, and I would think that everyone over a certain age will have some kind of memory connected to the song. I won't share mine, it's not for family viewing. (Rude, is being polite). A big favourite among the "flower power" movement, when weed meant more than common sense, and getting down and dirty ceased to be a love act, and instead was giving the complete wrong message about what love truly is. This song and "The air that I breathe" by the Hollies were the 2 songs of choice when I was being badly behaved with girls. See, I wasn't always a nice guy.....LOL Anyway, wonderful song then, and still is now. TTFN
You’ve always been a nice guy, Graham. You, like all of us, were just young and subjected to bad judgement.Lol. Like you said, somethings are better left unsaid. 😱 We weren’t born 2 “sweet little old ladies” either. Glad you enjoyed this classic and keep on rocking my friend. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
My first time seeing you two...I love you guys already... just subscribed so I don't miss anything you put out there...glad to see my generation still involved... can you react to Brooks and Dunn... Believe... think you will like it too...
Brooks and Dunn will definitely be on the list. Thanks for giving us a look. We also have another channel, Two Rocking Grannies, that was our first one, where we react to heavy metal and hard rock. We’d like to invite you to join us over there too. Keep on rocking babies & welcome aboard. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
My mom and dad were still teenagers in the 60's - I wasn't born 'till -75. 😁 I still love this song, and this particular performance just takes it up a notch or two. Gary Brooker's voice has aged like fine wine. I think he sounds better here than on the original record. (Edited out a typo)
I bought this song on a 45 record in 1967. While I still love the original, this version seems to raise the song to the hallowed position it has reached in many people's lives. Although its meaning is still a mystery to me, like life, sometimes being beautiful is enough.
I was 13 when this song was originally released in 1967. It is a classic anthem of the late 60's. Gary Brooker's voice is still superb....obviously more mature than in the original recording, but in my opinion better for it! Keep rocking ladies!
I absolutely love this version and Gary's voice is beautiful. Have a look at the Moody Blues nights in white satin, they're another 60s band, take a look at the version with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
An interesting note for the granny wearing the Beatles shirt. John Lennon believed that this was the best song every written and was somewhat obsessed with it. Look it up!!
Unsure if you have [ will go look ] the rendition of Sound of Silence by Disturbed you will love. Watch the live version on Conan show, before the official release.
Yes, we’ve done The Sound Of Silence on our Two Rocking Grannies channel already. We didn’t do the Conan version but we’ve heard it since then. It’s an incredible song and David’s voice is amazing. Thanks babies and keep on rocking. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
This song originally came out by this group in 1967. (Without the orchestra accompanying.) They’re from England. It was a beautiful song in 67 and it still is today. Glad you enjoyed it and keep on rocking. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
I so enjoyed your reaction. May I suggest doing a reaction from the original time (hopefully a live rendition) the song was released to compare the looks and how well they've aged...
You know, I don't like this New Testament version of A Whiter, but the one played with the orchestra in the year 200 sounds amazing. Excellent Brooker - both vocally and physically (tanned, relaxed, elegant, dignified). The band and the orchestra in perfect symbiosis.
mmm im not sure me self I think GARY is from east end of London, of which there are many Stars its a classic reaction very good, I MAY HAVE HAD SLIGHTLY TO MUCH TO DRINK - at a guess : )
Love your reactions. Seeing the Beatles t-shirt reminded me of Australian singer John Farnham’s cover of their song "Help" performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: th-cam.com/video/dv54giOSRKs/w-d-xo.html It would be interesting to hear your reactions since it is a unique take on their song. Peace, Dave
Thanks for joining our Granny Squad and welcome aboard. Thanks for your suggestion and we’ll try to check it out sometime soon. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🤟🏻💖🎶
Procol Harum means, beyond these things. Granny with the Beatles T-shirt on, pronounced it right the first time. Americans never pronounce words in other languages right.
How about a 70 yr. old Tina Turner ON THE STEEL WALKWAY HANGING OUT ABOVE THE AUDIENCE and in HIGH HEELS!! live in Arnhem Netherlands 2009 th-cam.com/video/MRZIzs9pE5o/w-d-xo.html. This is one hell of a performance titled "Tina Turner - Nutbush City Limits (Live from Arnhem, Netherlands.)"
Oops, you cut off Gary's thank you, thank you for having us & his lovely smile. There are many misconceptions surrounding the meaning of the song -- see th-cam.com/video/Pf73XwjZIFQ/w-d-xo.html for the interview w-writer Keith Reid & composer/lead singer Gary Brooker, founder of the band began in '67 who passed away in Feb. 2022. It is also said that Reid was "going to reveal the true meaning before he died" but he died before he explained anything. Many people believe it was about a drunken one-night stand. Procol Harum is supposed to have been the name of a friend's cat -- the name is a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning “far beyond these things”), or that it was a corruption of Procellarum, a vast ocean on the Moon. It was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's “Sleepers, Wake!” and “Air on the G String” but contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach although it makes references to both pieces. As per Reid, the line "as the miller told his tale" is definitely not a reference to Chaucer's Miller's Tale. Reid has repeatedly explained he'd never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote A Whiter Shade of Pale. In Roman Times Vestal Virgins were priestesses and acquired their name after Vesta, the goddess of the hearth and home to keep the home fires burning. It was their duty to not only remain a virgin for 30 years but they were to keep Vesta's sacred fire burning. This is the Danish National Concert Orchestra, filmed by Ledreborg Castle in Denmark 2006. The song has been the most played song in the U.K. for the last 75 yrs. Thanks - new subscriber.
Here are some other Danes knocking it out of the park, in my humble opinion. PLEASE dont listen to it but try making a genuine first reaction. Trust me on this...please (!). If you are not happy you can just refrain from uploading. If you have never seen the clip before you are in for 6 "quality of life" minutes! th-cam.com/video/enuOArEfqGo/w-d-xo.html Pls. give me a short reply if you do this reaction and I will look forward to watch your amazement!
I prefer the reactors who listen respectfully in silence then comment. Switching off & on is pretty irritating. It's the music that is professional and relevant, not these amateur critics, however good they are. respect please.
I suggest you either pull up the original music video and view it that way, or search out a different reaction channel that may do things the way you’d prefer. This is how we do things here and sorry if it doesn’t meet your approval. Keep on rocking. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
Truly the best version of the best song ever ❤
I'm 65 and this version of this song has become my favorite of all time. I never had one before so when I made this statement to myself about a year ago even I was surprised with the realization.

Nice and neat, in alphabetical order too. Some tasty recommendations here. However fell strongly that Fleetwood Mac should have a mention.
@@grahamnash9794 Thanks, thought of them and Eagles, but purposely didn't include because they are one of the most blocked bands on TH-cam. ☹️
@@metalmark1214 thanks for the consideration babies. 💖💖💖
Wow…..thanks for the well organized and considerate list of suggestions. We truly appreciate it. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
@@metalmark1214 i didn't realise that.
When you called this a "hippie song" I had to laugh. The music is based on Bach's Air On A G-String and the lyrics have multiple references to classic literature. I just stumbled across your channel tonight and subscribed.
Thanks for becoming part of the Granny Squad and welcome. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
The song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach although it makes references to both pieces, & regarding "the miller told his tale" Keith Reid has explained he'd never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote the song.
Amazing performance of a true classic. Gary's voice has only gotten better with age
It truly has. This was an awesome performance. Glad you enjoyed it and keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
It really has!
Just like a fine wine!!!😊😊😊🎶🎼🎵🎤🎹🎸🥁

I vaguely remember this song but never knew who it was by. Great reaction ladies!
It came out in 1967 and it was awesome to hear how good they still were when they did this performance so many years later. Glad you enjoyed it and keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
That was our generation of Greats... them are our boys... just a little older as we are. there still showing this generation how its done!!;-))
Absolutely Gregg, absolutely. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
I would like to adopt you as my grannies! My mother is with 77
(I think) a little bit older than you and has no idea about good rock!!!
Much better than the original. I remember it well.
Well. I was being born that year. Your reaction was great gals. Congrats, regards from Chile.
What a voice. This is one of the first albums I bought. Its a classic mastepiece ladies!!!
RIP Gary Brooker
RIP. You’ll always be remembered. Rock on babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
See, I wasn't always a nice guy.....LOL
Anyway, wonderful song then, and still is now.
@@nanaking9560 Hahaha... Now that right there is why I love you. Fantastic characters that take a lifetime to create.
Just beautiful. Love from Australia. 🕸🕷🕸
Greetings Australia. Wonderful to have you watching us. The song is indeed beautiful. We’re glad you enjoyed it too and keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
This is a great song.
It’s one of the best from its time period. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
"What were you doing in the sixties?"
If you can remember what you were doing in the sixties you weren't really there.
Haha. I had 2 of my 3 children in the late 60”s so I remember what I was doing. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
My mom and dad were still teenagers in the 60's - I wasn't born 'till -75. 😁
I still love this song, and this particular performance just takes it up a notch or two. Gary Brooker's voice has aged like fine wine. I think he sounds better here than on the original record. (Edited out a typo)
This is a great rendition of a phenomenal song. We’re glad you enjoyed it too and keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
I bought this song on a 45 record in 1967. While I still love the original, this version seems to raise the song to the hallowed position it has reached in many people's lives. Although its meaning is still a mystery to me, like life, sometimes being beautiful is enough.
say what you you will about the lyrics, the music itself was so beautiful! always brings a tear.
I was 13 when this song was originally released in 1967. It is a classic anthem of the late 60's. Gary Brooker's voice is still superb....obviously more mature than in the original recording, but in my opinion better for it! Keep rocking ladies!
I agree Gary’s voice is even sweeter in this version than the very first. It’s a fabulous song. Thanks babies and keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
iam and oldie andgoodie love the music
Thanks Shelia. So glad to have you watching. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🤘🏻🎶💖

More beautiful than ever...
I agree 100%. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
Gary Brooker is 76 years old in this video.
That’s amazing. His voice is still amazing even at that age. He looks great too. Just a beautiful song. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
You two are the best.
I absolutely love this version and Gary's voice is beautiful. Have a look at the Moody Blues nights in white satin, they're another 60s band, take a look at the version with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Thanks Karen. We appreciate your suggestion and will try to check it out sometime soon. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
As amazing as the original recording was this is AMAZING!!!
This was truly amazing. So glad you enjoyed it as much as we did. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
RIP Gary Booker taken from us earlier this year rock on in heaven and thanks for the memories
An interesting note for the granny wearing the Beatles shirt. John Lennon believed that this was the best song every written and was somewhat obsessed with it. Look it up!!

Great idea Willie. We’ll try to see what we can do sometime soon and see what happens. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
He played the guitar on the original version
Thanks for the info. He’s great on that piano though. Such a rich touch. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
RIP lead singer Gary Brooker and thank you Gary for this great masterpiece!
It was spectacular. RIP. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
If he had asked me something like that the answer would have been " So I don.t have to see your ugly, smug face " " .
Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
I was an embryo when i first felt this song.
They ate tongue on this slow !! And me too !
I didn't know Susan Sarandon was one of the backup singers! Come on now. She looks just like a young Susan !
I didn’t either. Maybe Susan has a twin. 😱😱😱 Lol. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻💖🎶🤟🏻
ADDIO,GARY......GRAZIE.GRAZIE....
You know, I don't like this New Testament version of A Whiter, but the one played with the orchestra in the year 200 sounds amazing. Excellent Brooker - both vocally and physically (tanned, relaxed, elegant, dignified). The band and the orchestra in perfect symbiosis.
Once the organ comes in it opens your soul .
Eastern Star classic reaction : )
Not sure if I get your message here. Would you like to elaborate? Rock on babies.✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
mmm im not sure me self I think GARY is from east end of London, of which there are many Stars its a classic reaction very good, I MAY HAVE HAD SLIGHTLY TO MUCH TO DRINK - at a guess : )
would you do more Skid Row songs like 18 and Life and Wasted Time?
Thanks for the great suggestion s and keep on rocking. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
If you have never seen the clip before you are in for 6 "quality of life" minutes!
th-cam.com/video/enuOArEfqGo/w-d-xo.html
Pls. give me a short reply if you do this reaction and I will look forward to watch your amazement!
Thanks Mike for the suggestion and the link and if we do this one soon, we’ll certainly let you know when it’s up. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶💖🤟🏻
