Dear Liz and Paul, You were fortunate that your gear box trouble was only a lack of oil. One thing to add to your engine check list for future service work. So here is a question, as I often hear continuous cruisers commenting on how cold they feel while motoring along. "Do "long johns" and felt lined boots not exist in Britain"? I could not exist without mine. Just a suggestion, if you feel your socks getting damp replace them immediately with fresh and do not wear socks made from 100% synthetic material. Hi Mark. Yes, now we know about it we have added it to the checks everytime we cruise. Long John's do exist, Paul wears them all throughout winter and thermal tops. I don't own any thermals but often wear leggings under my jeans on really cold days. 😀

Will the ice do harm to the lower part of your boat. Well it did something to your boat. Well it was a lack of oil ? not like you Paul. Nice bike Paul.
Have a look at "Narrowboat Will", he does a lot of his own servicing and was talking about the gearbox oil only a couple of weeks ago! Might be a bit of use?

But now that you know now, there will be no excuse to not check it. But yep get a full service and film it all so that you will know what to get ahead of time and what to change etc. Take pic of the oil filter etc to know what is the right one to get each time you change it.... or buy a second one to always have one on board.🙂 Gosh the storm hit bad on them trees... hope they all get cleared away soon. 🙂 Wow iced in for two weeks... I felt sorry for the poor Swans laying on the ice... Hi Andrea good to hear you're weather is still being good to you. Quite a few trees down on several parts of different canals and the North Oxford, where we were in November, has had to close at a section due to a massive, severe land slide. Our weather has been storm after storm of late but hopefully things will start calming down again soon. Definitely will film when we have the service done so we can refer to it and know how to do them ourselves in future. My valentines has been like any normal day, although as I write this, I am getting a nice cup of tea made for me 😍 Have a great week and see you next Wednesday when you will see us on a different canal 😀
I did have a Indian scrambler that i got for £50 that was not a runner but fixed it and it ran very well . This guy came up to me when i was out on the bike and tried to nick it off me. But at that time i was with four other lads and they stepped in and he fled . As he ran off and shouted back i will have that bike. Well he did in the end as the bike was a stolen one as i was unable to get the log book on the bike. And yes it was his but he did not say that when he tried to get it from me.
Well !!! You're not going to know unless someone tells you about gearbox oil, but you know now, it could be worth looking on the Internet for the make and model of your engine and gearbox (sometimes gearbox and engine are different) and find out about servicing and maintenance, and what type of oil to use, just a thought. I bet you said a few words about your bike. I would have been pissed right off. Be safe 😊
Hi David, yes the RCR man informed us of the oil we needed for the gearbox, luckily enough its the same oil as we had anyway for our engine. Paul took bike to Halfords and they fixed it for him so all back up and running on all accounts now. 😁

Yes we met them near foxton locks along with a couple of other friends. It was a lovely catch up. We watch your vlogs. Your latest on the landslide was really good, braver than I would have been walking that close to the landslide area. I dread to think how long and how much that will cost to be repaired. 🤔
Someone wrote on one of the narrowbaot groups on Facebook that it's going to take about 6months. Obviously not sure where they got that information or how true that is. What are you guys now doing as you'd planned to go that way hadn't you?

You should always carry spare oil,diesel filters, engine oil and belts Paul for emergencies. I never had a Mid Life Crisis?? I bloody deserve one I've earned it! But it wasn't meant to be... Ha ha dipstick for sure wasn't he 🤣 yes we due to service it soon although we've owned the boat over a year, we didn't really cruise much while renovating her so we have only cruised since August last year and probably only done about 180hours or there abouts. Hi there, yes ice can damage your blacking on the boat so not advisable to travel or allow your boat to break through thick ice. 😁
