Most contractors run what they already have in the winter. From purely a production and cost of ownership perspective a tractor will always outperform a skid steer plowing snow in large parking lots. Add to that operator comfort and travel speed and I’d take a tractor any day.
I have used both over the years although I haven't had a tracked skid loader, but both have their place. If you get the skid loader quick attach on the tractor and a 3rd function on the loader, you can run most of those attachments as well. We found the skid loader really shines in close quarters, but on larger jobs, the tractor was quicker. One job we did had a NH TC35 and a bobcat (don't remember the number) and it was a pretty even match loading a 5 ton dump truck.
Awesome machines imho Tear em down and rebuild back fairly easily and back to work…had the opportunity to get one from grand daddy… sat for 6years we had it fired up running in 15 min
I worked on a horse farm on weekends when I was 11-17 years old. Usually 1 weekend for the "Hunter jumper" type shows, and another weekend or two to do other stuff around the farm. They had 40 stalls and about 30 horses. My mom would drive 75 min to get me there on Friday after school or Sat morning, and she'd pick me up on Sunday evening. It was one of the best character building experiences of my life. I learned how to screen print, put up fences, welding, grinding, chainsaws, and general farm maintenance. It was owned by an older guy and his wife, and it was me and another kid that was 3 years older than I was, and the 4 of us did everything. I drove a 6 series JD tractor with a huge 15 or 20 foot batwing 3-point mower to mow the 40 acres. And I used a JD TerrainCut batwing ride-on mower to mow the 5 acres where the house was. I learned to drive a manual car; a right hand drive Morris Miner. Learned to drive really long 35 foot 7 house gooseneck trailers with a 1991 F250 diesel and a 1994 F350 dually. We split a 1965 Ford 5000 tractor to repair the clutch. (I believe that's what the model of the tractor was.) it was some of the best days of my life. Went to my first prom with one of the girls that took riding lessons and boarded her horse there. The rich equestrian girls were plentiful, and had the best memories fooling around in the barn when I was a young teen. I am twice as old now, but I wish I could have my kid do something like that.

I love these types of debates. Every piece of machinery has its place and each one has advantages and disadvantages depending on what one intends to use it for. However I agree with your assessment that a skid loader is far more versatile than a tractor. Like anything else whether you chose one or the other and the questions of what I was using it for was answered it’s an investment and should be treated accordingly. Good video!
after reading a few of the comments i am glad to see that i am not the only one that says a lot depends on the operator not just the machine a good operator that know his machine no matter what he drive he will be better and faster than any machine not matter what it is

I can't pick just one machine, A tractor for large grading jobs, I'm not talking a average size lot but multi acre projects and sports fields. Tractor with its longer wheel base will grade faster. Now for exceptions you can't get a Preperator for a tractor for removing rocks and junk. If I was doing single family homes a mid sized skid steer or track loader is a good compromise. I also like small wheel loaders for speed loading and unloading trucks. Attachments also make the job easier from a power rake to a plate compactor mounted on a skid steer or track loader, or a spreader or seeder mounted on a tractor, non powered rakes on large jobs with a tractor, these things even a large skid loader can't keep up. So I really want all 5 pieces of equipment in my golf bag. An Excavator, Wheel Loader, Tractor loader, Skid loader and Tracked loader.

A tractor can do almost everything that a skid steer can do but one this a skid steer can’t do is utilize two different attachments at the same time like a tractor can. I will often have my grapple on the front loader any time I’m bush hogging so that I can move rocks, stumps and logs out of the way. If I was doing mostly bulk loader work I’d probably go with a skid steer any day but for a jack of all trades type of machine the tractor gets my vote. Plus for logging applications where skidding logs and brush out of the woods is concerned I think the tractor wins. The skid steer can probably run any single attachment better than a tractor any day but the tractor can run two attachments almost equally good.
Skid steer is ten times more faster an safer because you need less area to operate it. But on final finish grade a tractor with double rear control will get it smother just takes longer
Turn around within your work lot and the LOD of a neighbors inside a city.. LOL Tractors work fine, in their place. Skid steers in theirs. Pick the right tool for both the job, and the user.

We own a dog boarding and daycare facility. The usage we need is snow removal, pea stone moving for the outdoor play areas, mowing and moving the crushed gravel for our parking lot. What kind of sub compact would best fit those needs in your experience? I have been looking at some of the Deere and Kubota subcompacts but not sure if it will have the maneuverability I want as well as the lifting power for the stone.
The whole tractor vs skid steer debate stresses me out, lol. I don't have either right now, but I don't know that I could justify the price tag of a compact track loader. If I got a CTL I'd probably want it around 65 HP but that feels like a gas guzzler if I'm just hauling dirt around, digging some ditches, or grading a driveway - maybe some forestry around the property. It would definitely get some use but I know I'd probably die from sticker shock when something eventually needs servicing. Also everything else gets more expensive.. Bigger trailer, bigger truck to haul it..
As a homeowner I couldn't imagine not having a tractor. I did briefly own a TL140 between tractors. It was great but just too much machine for working around the house. Now if i was in the business id be running skid loaders and not tractors. From now on i just rent the big stuff when needed.
Well either make it snow or watch his old plowing videos. Or maybe change your screen to a black and white only display, you won’t even know there working in the dirt instead of the snow. 👊
Operator skill and what you currently have must come into play as well. I’ll be much more efficient in that big skid and switch out the bucket for the rake then any other machine but that’s just how I was raised up. Being one with the machine. Also take into consideration prices of equipment
I grew up on tractor . I own both my 95 5200 is still brand new 1409 hrs my loader is a different story its my main piece of equipment i use . If im doing large areas ill use the tractor to finish grade because it does have self leveling if you know how to use it .?
Looked like you enjoyed yourself in that (3 series?) compact John Deere tractor. I know Bobcat reintroduced their tractor lineup within the last few years. Jon Ritter from "A Ritter Bit Will Do" has a small Kubota BX subcompact tractor. You and Jon should try to get together since he's in Minnesota if schedules can be worked out.
Your comment on skid steers being better at snow plowing than tractors really stuck with me. Large lots a tractor with a meatlpless or HLA would handledly WIP a skid steer or compact track loader. Their operating cost is significantly lower and resale value is higher and with the invitation in tec, they don't take that long to get operate efficiently. I know you guys do a lot of dirt work it makes sense that you use them to move snow. In my area, hardly any companies use skid steers or compact track loaders to plow with. Their roading speed is slow, plowing speed is slow, visibility compared to other machines is nonexistent, and the fatigue on the operator. Lots of large companies in my area have tractors to plow with and rent them out during the summer so they don't sit. One company uses New holland power star 75 with 8ft center and 3ft wing metal pless on them. Personally, I would much rather have a compact wheel loader with an HLA or metal pless on it. I would pick a tractor with an HLA and power wing back blade over a skid steer any day. Of course, it comes down to the equipment you have at your disposal. But to say a tractor is not as efficient for plowing wide-open lots is a stretch.
With heavy vegetation I use the tractor with the tiller two or three passes is all I need for a good seeding if I have a bunch of rocks then I switch to the asv with power rake
That was a fascinating comparison. However, I think a better time comparison would have required the tractor to start with the rear implement detached. Anyone who has hitched up a 3-point and PTO knows it is far more time consuming than SSQA plus hydraulics. Of course, the tractor would have to be attached to the rear implement before using the loader. Well, the test as run could be meaningful if you NEVER take the rear implement off the tractor. The ability to carry both front and rear implements is one distinct advantage of tractors over skids. BTW, I am a tractor guy. If asked to enter this challenge, I would have done it with my front loader, tiller and box scraper because that is just what I have. I would have produced the best result but I would have finished after everyone left due to the time spent switching from the tiller to the box scraper.
Either one but not a gm with ifs. Solid front axle, preferably gas engine (weighs less up front) snow plow prepped from factory (better front springs, aux switches, bigger alternator and skid plate. single cab short bed with 1000 lbs near the tailgate. Poly vplow and you’ll push through anything
Hey Stanley Love your channel. Not sure where to ask this question, but what piece of equipment would you recommend if I wanted to install the large cement blocks? I know they weigh around a ton, but I think I would have to use a large excavator or huge skid steer. I want to use them for a large turn around area that slopes down. Those “large cement blocks”, that you are referring to are called; Jersey barriers. And they don’t weigh anywhere near 1 ton. Stop posing, IF you have anything like that done, you won’t have much of anything to do with actually doing any of it. 👌

Well I think I'm a little biased for a tractor, growing up that was all that was around, no one had a skid steer so I never was around one until about 15 years ago just tractors with loaders and I think like they said from a price point a tractor is the best buy, now it is slower than a skid steer in some applications (especially changing attachments) and needs more space to maneuver but it is so universal and can be driven on the road and is generally lighter than the same hp skiddy
I personally prefer a tlb. All because you can run whatever on the front loader, ie any of the types of buckets, grapples etc. Then another implement on the back, ie power/ hydro rake, tiller, chipper so on so forth. But the lifting capacity on the front loader depends highly on the size of the tlb. Skid steers have it for the lift capacity, but they also cost 1.5-2x more than the affordable tlb. Maybe it's just my area.
@@Dirtmonkey it takes some work to dial it in unless you're using a land plane or know how to use the bucket just right. I did a job for a friend, she wanted me to scalp her driveway due to patches of grass then grade it. Actually came out nice after 5 hours of work.
Good video as usual. At a trade show they would have 2 different machines each one digging a trench about 2' wide by 4' deep and 75' long to see witch machine could dig the trench the fastest. They had a few different skid steers and compact track loaders to chose from to backfill the trenches and they would see which machine could backfill and grade off the trench the fastest. They had a Case 450 (71Hp) with a 6 way dozer. Nobody ran the dozer. After watching for a while, I thought I would try backfilling with the Case dozer. Two guys were getting ready to see which machines they would run to backfill the trench the fastest. I walked up to them and asked if I could challenge them to a duel, I would backfill one trench against the two of them on the other trench. One of the machines I was up against was a BIG 6 tire prototype Bobcat! The other was a compact track loader. I finished backfilling and grading my trench well before the 2 machines finished their trench.
Thank you for your comment. I think our operating skills were comparable. The trenches were dug in an open field, an ideal setting for a dozer. With enough room to work and very few obstacles to work around,, I think my Cat D4 C can perform as well as two CTL's. But in a smaller area, with obstacles, one CTL could outperform many Cat D4 C's.
I would say it’s operator experience and job specs… but cost is king especially for start ups….I’m weighing track loader vs tractor now myself….my lil bx 25d needs a big brother
I’m personally a skiddy fan. I believe a good skiddy operator can run it like a dozer or dig like an excavator in some ways. Skid steers are just nimble for a variety of things
What jobs can you take bids on,for how much money if you only had one or the other.. It’s not just cost per hour,but cost per day.and if you can’t get as many jobs done with one vs the other than you have your winner at the end of the year on which machines gets used more billable days a year.
Stan you know as well as I do it’s all what your comfortable with operating I prefer skid steers better in all terrain had a model1920 Ford with front loader and brush hog real scary on hillsides and steep grades
The larger the tractor the better it works. I use a 56Hp Utility Tractor with power rake and 4in1 bucket for most ground work, and rent a tracked Skid Steer on larger jobs. I can rent a 100hp Cat for $220 a day delivered Hard to justify owning one because of how cheap I can rent at the moment. Skid is defiantly faster but when it comes to finish work operator is probably the most important.
“Hydrostatic means you don’t have to think.” Until your driving a tractor with side-by-side drive pedals, then you go to hit the brake to stop it from rolling and almost run someone over.

Like everything else in the world 🌎 it all depends on what your doing. Skidsteers are the best in small spaces. Tractors need room to work. I really agree that tractors are overlooked. They are cheaper to run and will out last a Skidsteer? I now have a JD 3320. It replaced a open station bobcat.I did not think I would be able to out work the Skidsteer with the Tractor. Well I was wrong. I got the 3320 because it had a nice cab and was cheaper then the Skidsteer. I was very surprised 😮 on what the 3320 will do. I use it for snow removal most of all. I do move alot of snow ❄. Right now you could not get my 3320 away from me. I ran the bobcat for 30 years. It did everything I needed it to do on the farm. They now are way over priced and not as well made as my old bobcat. So back to it all depends?? If they would have had a cheap field digger on the back of the tractor instead of that high priced hydo thing 🙄 it would beat the pants 👖 😜 off the rest of them!! So says an old as dirt, beat up farmer. Thanks 😊.

Most guys have to work with what they have take the race factors away and let operaters take their time ( end product results more important than winning race) in other words slow the tractor or skid steer down
Grading a tractor may be cheaper per hour but the ergonomics are best with a skid loader. You are not tieing your neck and back in knots trying to always look over your shoulder, now that said if you know how to grade with a tractor you should be able to get it as level and smooth as a grader. But you will be working in reverse most of the time.

I would pick a tractor with an HLA and power wing back blade over a skid steer any day. Of course, it comes down to the equipment you have at your disposal. But to say a tractor is not as efficient for plowing wide-open lots is a stretch.

With heavy vegetation I use the tractor with the tiller two or three passes is all I need for a good seeding if I have a bunch of rocks then I switch to the asv with power rake

That was a fascinating comparison. However, I think a better time comparison would have required the tractor to start with the rear implement detached. Anyone who has hitched up a 3-point and PTO knows it is far more time consuming than SSQA plus hydraulics. Of course, the tractor would have to be attached to the rear implement before using the loader.
Well, the test as run could be meaningful if you NEVER take the rear implement off the tractor. The ability to carry both front and rear implements is one distinct advantage of tractors over skids.
BTW, I am a tractor guy. If asked to enter this challenge, I would have done it with my front loader, tiller and box scraper because that is just what I have. I would have produced the best result but I would have finished after everyone left due to the time spent switching from the tiller to the box scraper.

Either one but not a gm with ifs. Solid front axle, preferably gas engine (weighs less up front) snow plow prepped from factory (better front springs, aux switches, bigger alternator and skid plate. single cab short bed with 1000 lbs near the tailgate. Poly vplow and you’ll push through anything

I know they weigh around a ton, but I think I would have to use a large excavator or huge skid steer. I want to use them for a large turn around area that slopes down. Well I think I'm a little biased for a tractor, growing up that was all that was around, no one had a skid steer so I never was around one until about 15 years ago just tractors with loaders and I think like they said from a price point a tractor is the best buy, now it is slower than a skid steer in some applications (especially changing attachments) and needs more space to maneuver but it is so universal and can be driven on the road and is generally lighter than the same hp skiddy

I personally prefer a tlb. All because you can run whatever on the front loader, ie any of the types of buckets, grapples etc. Then another implement on the back, ie power/ hydro rake, tiller, chipper so on so forth. But the lifting capacity on the front loader depends highly on the size of the tlb. Skid steers have it for the lift capacity, but they also cost 1.5-2x more than the affordable tlb. Maybe it's just my area.

@@Dirtmonkey it takes some work to dial it in unless you're using a land plane or know how to use the bucket just right. I did a job for a friend, she wanted me to scalp her driveway due to patches of grass then grade it. Actually came out nice after 5 hours of work.
If you have to operate the machine in tight spaces or on steep slopes, the skid steer is the only way to go!!!
Good video as usual. At a trade show they would have 2 different machines each one digging a trench about 2' wide by 4' deep and 75' long to see witch machine could dig the trench the fastest. They had a few different skid steers and compact track loaders to chose from to backfill the trenches and they would see which machine could backfill and grade off the trench the fastest. They had a Case 450 (71Hp) with a 6 way dozer. Nobody ran the dozer. After watching for a while, I thought I would try backfilling with the Case dozer. Two guys were getting ready to see which machines they would run to backfill the trench the fastest. I walked up to them and asked if I could challenge them to a duel, I would backfill one trench against the two of them on the other trench. One of the machines I was up against was a BIG 6 tire prototype Bobcat! The other was a compact track loader. I finished backfilling and grading my trench well before the 2 machines finished their trench.

Thank you for your comment. I think our operating skills were comparable. The trenches were dug in an open field, an ideal setting for a dozer. With enough room to work and very few obstacles to work around,, I think my Cat D4 C can perform as well as two CTL's. But in a smaller area, with obstacles, one CTL could outperform many Cat D4 C's.
I would say it’s operator experience and job specs… but cost is king especially for start ups….I’m weighing track loader vs tractor now myself….my lil bx 25d needs a big brother
I’m personally a skiddy fan. I believe a good skiddy operator can run it like a dozer or dig like an excavator in some ways. Skid steers are just nimble for a variety of things

It’s not just cost per hour,but cost per day.and if you can’t get as many jobs done with one vs the other than you have your winner at the end of the year on which machines gets used more billable days a year.

The larger the tractor the better it works. I use a 56Hp Utility Tractor with power rake and 4in1 bucket for most ground work, and rent a tracked Skid Steer on larger jobs. I can rent a 100hp Cat for $220 a day delivered Hard to justify owning one because of how cheap I can rent at the moment. Skid is defiantly faster but when it comes to finish work operator is probably the most important.
Not to be that guy but a good bit of cat is made here in Indy maybe not the huge mine trucks but excavators skid steers graders etc etc

Like everything else in the world 🌎 it all depends on what your doing. Skidsteers are the best in small spaces. Tractors need room to work. I really agree that tractors are overlooked. They are cheaper to run and will out last a Skidsteer? I now have a JD 3320. It replaced a open station bobcat.I did not think I would be able to out work the Skidsteer with the Tractor. Well I was wrong. I got the 3320 because it had a nice cab and was cheaper then the Skidsteer. I was very surprised 😮 on what the 3320 will do. I use it for snow removal most of all. I do move alot of snow ❄. Right now you could not get my 3320 away from me. I ran the bobcat for 30 years. It did everything I needed it to do on the farm. They now are way over priced and not as well made as my old bobcat. So back to it all depends?? If they would have had a cheap field digger on the back of the tractor instead of that high priced hydo thing 🙄 it would beat the pants 👖 😜 off the rest of them!! So says an old as dirt, beat up farmer. Thanks 😊.

You're testing initially finished grade, not "Finished" grade. Come back without disturbing these test beds in a year. And see how they've settled.

Grading a tractor may be cheaper per hour but the ergonomics are best with a skid loader. You are not tieing your neck and back in knots trying to always look over your shoulder, now that said if you know how to grade with a tractor you should be able to get it as level and smooth as a grader. But you will be working in reverse most of the time.
