    There has been a growing trend of small farmers or homesteaders looking into buying a skidsteer instead of a traditional tractor. We currently have both on our farm, and we're sharing the differences between them, what attachments are available, and why they may be a better choice for your small farm.
    We are a small homestead in south central Oregon living the best sustainable life as possible. We raise goats, rabbits, and heritage birds. Follow along as we divulge our secrets to surviving off-grid on solar power and growing our own food.

    Hey my girlfriend use to have problems with the quick attachment on these loaders I made her a small pipe that slides over the lever that way she can get more leverage and I find myself using it also. Just a thought that may help you out. Love your videos

      We have something similar for the same reason (leverage). The older they get, the rustier and sticker they are to change out.

    Also on snow, high centering and getting stuck is MUCH EASIER TO DO in a skid steer due to its low ground clearance. You may need to plow more often. Couple years ago I rented one and my friend got stuck 4 times in an hour trying to clear the snow (2-4ft deep) by the mail box as the gravel under the snow was rutted snd sloped. It is no fun shoveling by hand to get it unstuck! Later the tractor made that MUCH easier and faster due to higher ground clearance. So don’t rule out ground clearance and topography when looking to decide.

      Good piece of advice. Shoveling anything out in winter isn't fun!

      This is kinda an apples to oranges comparison that is based on price. I don't know any one that actually uses a bobcat s150 for anything other than moving dirt between fence posts.
      Your friends experience is related to his personal experience. - He rent one??? One what? I have a 333D CTL at 12K pounds. i can't get stuck if I tried. But a 1hr operator that backs up and high centers maybe could get stuck. There is no way on this earth that a professionally operated larger Skid Steer will not out perform a tractor on any of the tasks mentioned.

    I have an rv & cottage resort. 18 acres. About 1acre of lawn to cut. Beach sand to rake. Gravel to move. Heavy skids to move around. I’m leaning towards a skid steer better fits my needs. I have a ride in mower already.

    just bought a Kubota l2501 , BH77 backhoe, L525 Loader . Only 44.5 hours with rake and tiller. Then I saw this video, GEZZ!!! Great job, BTW!!! Anyone interested in an exchange for a Skid Steer? My 4 acres needs dirt moved and graded. NOT a farmers tractor. Any suggestions?

      We never thought about a skid steer as a great homesteading option until we had one side by side with our tractor.

    Overall very very good thank you for this I do have a question and a request for a suggestion
    Buying 55 acres in the mountains of North Carolina/Tennessee right on the border there is no farming at all I will be doing it strictly trail maintenance and or clearing that I will want to do. road grading, land clearing, digging, taking downed trees back to the house to cut up and split. The terrain is very steep that's why I was thinking of the skid steer but again more comfortable with a tractor but the tractor sits a bit high and I'm concerned about tipping over. any comments or suggestions would be great

    • @SpragueRiverHomestead
      @SpragueRiverHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the short wheel base, skidsteers are VERY tippy. Access to the back part of our property is steep and whenever I've used the skidsteer I either weight the bucket or drive up the hill backwards. Either way you need to keep the bucket nearly on the ground as it is a considerable amount of the weight that balances (or unbalances) the machine.
      With a tractor it would depend a lot on the size and model. The only time mine gets tippy is with a heavy load. I've had it on three wheels more times than I can count. Again it's about weight and balance, but overall I find the tractor we have to be heavy enough and with a wheel base long enough for better stability.
      I will add though, that in the event of a roll/tip I would rather be in the skidsteer as it has a seat belt as safety bar, whereas the tractor will just throw you off and possibly roll over you. Our tractor does have a seat belt, but I confess I have never used it.
      Food for thought. Hope that helps somewhat.

      @@SpragueRiverHomestead thank you for the real quick reply and good to know it's tipsy, I wouldn't have thought so since it is so short to the ground. Really just creating a path and moving trees maybe post hole digging for decks or something like that creating a very small campground is what the land will be used for. Just came across the mini skid stairs the ones you stand behind trying to understand and research those right now it's amazing how you can get sidetracked on the Internet and TH-cam but it's really nice to have a community that's willing to help out and reply thank you again and any thoughts as always appreciate it

    In the end it depends on how you are going to use it. I am on my second tractor, first one was a Kubota L39 which is a 35 hp model. I have an LS XR4155 now. I push a lot of snow, when it happens. We have several under 30 hp tractors and one tracked skid steer in the neighborhood, but once the snow gets over a foot they struggle, whereas I'm able to keep pushing. My only problem is my wish list of attachments outstrips my budget by many times over, but if it will save me money or let me get more done, then I will find a way to get it.

      We made the mistake of looking up attachments. There are so many available, and it gave us too many ideas.

      Have been looking at getting a skid steer recently but now I am thinking of an LS tractor. I know they are newer to the market compared to the old standbys but have heard nothing but good things about them. What has your experience been?

      Many don't think about the skidsteer as an option for a smaller homestead, but they are really nice to have some days. We still use our tractor a lot too. Big equipment really can change how you work.

    Homestead starts with road, site and home construction. That's the tie breaker towards the bobcat.

      Maybe. We've certainly done all of the above with tractors.

    Do all skid steers have chain points in the back? Would you be able to skid a couple logs with one?

    • @SpragueRiverHomestead
      @SpragueRiverHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will probably depend on the exact model, but you could always add something to move logs around.

      We like ours a lot. We'll have a review video out in two weeks, so be sure to watch for that.
      We shopped around and found that the John Deere and Kubota were very overpriced for what they are. My Dad has a 40 or 45 hp LS tractor (made by the folks that make New Holland), and though they are comparable in price it feels cheaply made and has had quite a few problems. I've heard mixed reviews of the Bransons, but without a dealer nearby we didn't get a chance to look at them in person.
      The Mahindra feels like good quality, has had no problems, and was at a good price point. Add in the great warranty and I'd buy one again in a heartbeat.
