This is bad for my GAS. I've reduced my collection to an M7 and an RB67, but the costs are pushing me to think about digital again. Then again, buying another camera means my wife would probably leave me.

I needed this EOS camera body, because the digital photo school I am attending let's me use their EOS glass all I want. Now I have to be a good boy for awhile, and when I can sell some cameras if I want new ones

Thanks for the video! I'm so tempted, but there's so many things vying for my $2.5k. I wanted to take a second to heap praises on KEH. I was asked to teach a photo course for at risk teenage boys. There were 12 who wanted to take the course and my dream was to have a camera available for each. The art center that would offer the course got a grant to buy the equipment. Since I was a satisfied customer of KEH I reached out to them and explained what we wanted and how much money we had. They were able to supply 12 Canon XTi with kit lenses for our budget! They all worked great and the boys and I had a great time those 6 weeks. They boys cherished being trusted with the cameras they were provided during the course. The cameras are waiting for the next batch of students. Hopefully it won't be long.

Thanks for calling out Kodak. It’s a sad state of affairs trying to buy film at all these days. Trying to do so affordably is rapidly becoming a joke. Film prices are becoming more insane as time passes. I try to protect myself by purchasing 100ft bulk rolls of HP5 and (maybe) Tri-X. But still, it is pretty obscene what they’re charging for film nowadays. It’ll break the demand and people will eventually say “screw this I’m switching to digital”.

Got a 50R during the summer sale. Really loving it and no issues for not having IBIS (the camera is sooooo light!). I paired it with the smallest GF lens, the 50mm so that helps. I have an XT-2 as well. The GFX is to me the closest replacement to my old film camera but I keep the smaller one when I need something faster and easier to carry around, particularly if I want to use a big telephoto.

One thing I like about the Fuji is that If you want to mimic I film, like Ilford HP5. You can set a film simulation
and then use a Tiffen 49BPM18 49mm Black Pro-Mist 1/8. You will come very close to the film.
    Much cost effective too.

Been using my 50R professionally for a couple of years now, and it still delivers the goods. I wish they made a 50R2 with better (phase detection) AF, and perhaps a slight improvement in high iso performance. The 50S2 did none of that, so I passed on that one.

My Pentax has been collecting dust for months. 120 color film is just too much to justify the “okay” images that I get out of it. I’d rather just take my time and shoot it on 4x5.
I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between black and white film vs any modern digital camera if you slap a 1/8 pro mist on it. I think color is the big question mark for me though.
Moving forward it’s probably going to be 4x5 and digital for me. With an added emphasis on figuring out a good color workflow that might rival Portra. Your images with black and white on this guy are almost indistinguishable.

    • @CalumetVideo
      @CalumetVideo ปีที่แล้ว +5

Totally agreed! I am shooting black and white film and moving back into color with the digital camera. As for me, 35mm color film is done. The prices of 35mm color film has gone crazy!!!! I think the advantage of film photography is seen in larger negatives such as medium format and large format.

Film is beautiful but there are several reasons why it took a big step back in the 2000's. We all know the advantages that digital brought to our lives as photographers and those who are relatively new to film are already struggling with the same disadvantages we film shooters struggled back then. I find absolutely remarkable that Fujifilm as a brand and manufacturer makes the conscious decision to design their cameras with real attention to what photographers not only need -technical specs- but what really love and feel inspired by.

Hi Matt, Keh have a SIGMA SD Quattro H Foveon camera instock. If you want a film look the Foveon sensor is king in the digital world. It's not a high iso performer 100 to 400 for colour and 100 to 1000 iso for black and white. There have been some italian sites comparing the 50mp fuji gfx and the Foveon still comes out on top for colour and resolution.

The physical shutter speed dial is, to a lot of folks, ~the very soul~ of Fuji Digital Photography. I don't necessarily mind that they do some PASM cameras, but they shouldn't let the shutter dial go entirely. Between the 50Sii, 100S, and X-H2 versions, it's easy to worry that Fuji is loosing some what what makes them unique, what draws folks to Fuji over Sony and Canon and Nikon. I expect eventually there will be X-T5 and T50, so a GFX50Rii would make perfect sense for that range of cameras.

I had the GFX on short loan from a family member and loved it. I got to the stage where I got my digital shots to look close to my film shots, especially for BNW. Sadly in Ireland, like everywhere I guess, the cost of colour neg film (35 + 120mm) + cost of living expenses is simply not worth it anymore, even if you dev at home. They started out as a cheaper and less desired option when the S and R we're originally released but now the R is way more sought after than the S. My "Medium Format" digital camera is the Sigma sd Quattro. yeah, it's not huge MegaPickles, but the look of the files, the rendering, and the size and use remind me of using my Bronica ETRSi 645 camera. The SA mount lenses aren't focus by wire so manual focus is a dream, and autofocus isn't terrible. But those Foveon colors, and those Foveon Monochromes are SOOO worth it for when I want to shoot "medium" but don't want to shoot film.

Your opening comments address issues I'm still grappling with. I ended my long experience with film with the Pentax 645NII, a truly wonderful medium format machine. Prior to that I was using a Mamiya M645 1000s with a really fast lens (80mm f1.9 maybe). These rigs were wonderful and I reluctantly joined the digital era with the full-frame Canon 5D classic which I still own. It gave me film-like results which made the transition from film less shocking. The thing is, I'm still looking for something that gives me what I was getting from medium format film. I wonder if there is something that will eventually do it? The Fujifilm GFX50R sure sounds like a promising piece of gear. And the size of the camera might feel about right in the hand--it seems to have heft. Anyway, good video.

I've gravitated over from using a digital camera to test shoot to just using a digital camera with the way the cost of analogue has been increasing. I have some Mamiyas (645 Pro TL, C330, and C220), but I generally gravitated toward either my Nikon F3 or Pentax LX along with my Minolta V3 that are all 35mm for most of my projects where the compactness and speed helped a lot.
These days I've actually gone towards MFT (EM1.2, GX85, and E-P5), an old-but-still-strong Sony A6000, and even a set of Nikon 1's (V3 and J5) that are all smaller yet than full frame/35mm. I've been considering the a7c even if the mechanical shutter is slower and the EVF is worse just because I prefer rangefinder style bodies. I love the Xpro 3, but for the price of the system you can get better performance elsewhere. I may just move to an A6500 for IBIS used for a fair price, I'm perfectly content with APS-C and love the images I get out of the humble A6000.

A little un-related but related to the sentiment about revisiting older digital camera; I use to swoon over the Canon 1DX (original) and it was just brought to my attention that I could potentially pickup one up for $500-700 which I am actually considering now. Would love to see someone revisit that camera and give me the push I need to get back into the Canon system.

I tried out the Xpro3 recently for adapting lenses to see if it could be a good cheap leica alternative, but the manual focusing just isn’t good enough.
The EVF gets laggy when using anything besides peaking (which I hate), and the side window in the OVF isn’t really practical either.
Figured if I was buying a new camera anyways, and I wasn’t gonna use the OVF, might as well go medium format. The 50R at it’s price point looks really good.
But no type-C… That really killed it for me.
I can live with slow operation and no IBIS, but not having the ability to easily charge the camera with a readily available cable is a dealbreaker.
Very good video though, thank you!

I've seen a couple of articles about the old CCD sensors on the early Nikon's and the Fujifilm S Pro line. I'd love to hear/see your take on these mythical early digital sensors!

Cool recommendation! but 44x33 mm is so close to full frame, and lenses are limited, its not a big enough jump up this format.

Leica SL is a good option. Not the newest and fastest but still has modern digital feature, feels sturdy and photos came out of it looks less "digital" than some models launched after the SL. Also works really well with old M glasses. Only bad thing of this camera is it's dumb and small forehead design...

I love the 50R. It’s a great image and convinced it was by far an improvement over what I can get with my Sony system. But I’ve recently shot it side by side and it’s just not worth it to me to have the Fuji as much as I love it.

Give me a GFX50r II with 50mp, IBIS, PDAF, and USB charging and I’d be happy. No need for ANY video features, just a camera for $2900 I’m sold. I’m also tempted to still get a R or older s gen 1 bc of the file size and lens cost compared to Hasselblad X1D lenses. I have a 500cm and canon 1N and just can’t deal with crazy film prices. I don’t think I’d ever sell the 500cm but sort of temped to go digital

A Nikon d850 at 64 iso is the same quality as a 4x5 large format film.
You don’t need a large sensor to be on par with 120mm film.

I think the biggest niche that the GFX covers is adapting 135 format lenses and pushing their limits. Otherwise it's just a camera like most others.

I will switch my S5 for scanning for one of those 50Rs hopefully soon. Where it really starts adding up are the lenses for sure, not even the "kit" zoom is in any way affordable to me but thankfully there's a whole fb group dedicated to adapting and keeping track of lenses that cover well. Will get myself a Rokinon Cine 85/1.5 and some day a Sigma 50/1.4. Really looking forward to it.

I'm a cheapskate and gave up film in 2006 - but it too 10 years until I could afford a DSLR I liked as much as my Nikon film cameras. The GFX50R is a very appealing camera for a portrait shooter. I don't have the budget for it, so I shoot old familiar Nikon D3S, D3X, & D700 bodies. The D700 has only just arrived - I've been curious for some time to compare the D700 sensor output with the D3S output. Like comparing different digital film types! 🤣

I love my 50R. Adapting other lenses to it is a breeze. I have a whole collection of Mamiya lenses that work very well. My only gripe is the poor ergonomics. It’s a fairly heavy camera and the grip is almost non existent forcing me to add a grip to the camera.

  • @gaarakabuto1

If this camera is a great option gravitating towards the film shooter what does it offer more over any Mamiya 645afd with an older 50MP Phase One or leaf digital backs?
Personally I am more and more leaning towards that system, just because the idea of being able to pop out the digital back load the film back, take a couple of shots and then back to digital just makes it so tempting.
