What a beautiful b12 right there, one of my favorite L.N.E.R tender engines. I hope the price wasn't too rough for a great model for that. Love the grand video Sam, and keep at it in due future times.
I had a brief scare with my Hornby B12 today. While I was running it with 6 older Hornby Teaks it slowed down and started spewing smoke from the boiler! I thought for a second the motor was fried, but then I remembered UK-market locos have EMI suppression capacitors. Lo & behold, after taking it apart, I found a burnt-out cap! Well I'm very impressed with the B12, I had one of the original Triang models. As I remember,it was quite well equipped with Magnadhesion and Syncrosmoke . I didn't have any problems with it other the body cracking across the securing screwhole. I can't remember what happened to it, more than likely sold by my parents when I got into motorcycles. It’s been a very long time since you’ve reviewed the Hornby B12! I remember watching that video a couple of times on your channel before and the model is outstanding! 😃
Is it me or do British steam locomotives have a certain “charm” to them? I mean don’t get me wrong I like most steam locos but the British ones somehow stand out to me. Anyway great review!
I think its to with their proportions due to the smaller loading gauge historically and still to a large extent now on the UK network. Diesel locos are most noticeable. Long, thing and relatively low. Put a class 66 next to lets say an gp40 or sd40 loco from the US. Their basically the same loco underneath but the 66 is packaged much more neatly.
The 'back-of-the-box' info on this one I find very interesting. I'm glad Sam is re-reviewing these. I've only been here about a year or so. As a US broadcaster (NBC) once said to promote it's reruns, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you."
Loved this review Sam, and your advice to Bachmann and Heljan over the benefits of a decent mechanism. Wonderful to see it pull the rake of 7 coaches up Gordon's Hill with no problem. I might invest in the black livery version.
Wow! I am a personal fan of the B12 class because it just looks really cool. Also, if you’re familiar with the fan-made story of Alfred, the “B12” class (his class isn’t really defined but he looks like a B12), yeah, that’s also a factor. Anyway nice vid Sam! Amazing model! Thanks!!
Sam, just got my son his first B12 and was wondering if you had experienced that the middle wheel on the tender sometimes didn’t move as his does. Tried to look at the close up on the video and it looked like yours was the same. Is this correct or should they all move all the time?? Great channel and keep up the good work.
Beautiful model Sam! Such lovely engines and we’re lucky to have a preserved example! In fact, the preserved example is the only preserved British 4-6-0 steam engine with inside cylinders!
Omg at 17:56 when the B12 coupled up to those coaches, all I found think about was that Thomas and friends coupling sound from the older model series XD
It's 2021; just bought one of these here in the US for $173 USD. Expensive, but still a great value for the money: all metal body, dual flywheels, fantastic detailing.... btw, my body fits 100% correct on the frame, and there are no missing bits, no glue marks, etc. Just 100% high quality assembly. Why can't they ALL be this good....?

Hi Sam! After your review on the incredible Bachmann 37, I went ahead and picked up the class 40! I highly recommend it as it is practically the same in terms of quality and performance. The prices of them vary although I'm sure at some point you'll be able to find a good deal on hattons 😉. I'd also like to bring up the attention of the Bachmann deltic as this is just as good! Seems that all round Bachmann diesel range are pretty awesome! Thanks!
Hi Sam, A very classy loco. I was pulled by the one on the North Norfolk Railway. Agreeing with your previous comments on the LNER Apple Green and white lined livery it does look very good. As always a great review. Stay Safe

I just bought one of these on the strength of this review. Looking closely through a loupe everything is perfect. The metal boiler joint underneath is spot on as is the lining, paint, no glue marks, and running. 10/10 I put some flat adhesive automotive wheel weights inside the tender as it only weighs 50g stock. Keep an eye out for eBay 20% and 15% promotional dealer discount codes. I got mine for the usual £145 less 20% paid by eBay and another 2.5% off going through a cashback site (Quidco) making it the best value new loco I've ever bought!
98462. Or “Alfred” was a LNER B12 purchased by the north western railway somewhere around the 1920s. And was only seen a few times in the railway series. We are later told he was taken back to the mainland.
Hiya - I have 2 similar Loco's - BR 4-6-0 B17/2 'Welbeck Abbey' No. 61619 (R3448) & 'Westham United' No.61672 (Which came in the set called "East Coast Express" R1214). It says on the back that in 1926 with increased loading on the E. Beautiful sam, when hornby gets it right not much out there can touch them, just been running my battle of Britain 34077 which got lost in my collection, forgotten how nice it is , great review 👍
Hi Sam, It looks from the side shots that the front of the loco is bending upwards quite a bit, which would explain why the bottom of the boiler doesn't fit flush.
Hi Sam. A couple of things I noticed that you didn't comment on. 1) There was a line along the top of the boiler (where the rivets were); I don't know whether this is a manufacturing fault, or was an original feature. 2) You appear to have gone back to your old Gaugemaster controller - what's going on there?
Hey Paul! Yes you're right about the line - some locos do have a join there in real life, but I was unable to find a photo of the real thing from above, so it gets the benefit of the doubt. I'll only criticise that if it's egregious, or stretches the entire length of the body: firebox to smokebox (in which case, it can't possibly be accurate). I sometimes upload videos out of sequence; this one was filmed before I swapped controllers! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yep got one of these and they are remarkable locomotives, possibly one of Hornby's best. Think I got mine for around £122 mark but was kicking myself for putting of buying it for so long as I could have got it for £116 from Hornby's own outlet shop in Swindon which has now sadly closed.
my grandad built me one of these out of an old broomstick- my, this brings back so many memories (I actually have it sitting next to me as I write this)! I named it Alfred after the Thomas and Friends OC.
Yeah, he had a spare broomstick and some dowels lying around and he and I spent an afternoon making Alfred. I was 8 at the time so the painting was a bit sloppy, but it has charm and that's all that matters.
i love the look of nem couplings but mine just fall of and get stuck in the track and makes my other locos fall over btw sam i have the a4 seagul , P2 cock o the north , A1 tornado (limited edition livery) A1 flying scotsman (triang) , smokey joe ( centeray ) and some which im trying to find the name also soon to have a b12
Hi Sam love the B12 I used to have one but sent it back. As every time it would try to go around a corner it would fall over. Even though a P2 could navigate the same corner without difficulty.
It’s a beautiful locomotive in a beautiful livery! In my opinion, non-streamlined LNER locomotives look amazing in Apple Green! Of course, A4s look lovely in all the liveries LNER applied to them. BR Black was an obvious money saving measure & BR Green looks like the GWR bought out the other 3 of the Big Four! On a mechanical note, why doesn’t Bachmann take notice of their competitors attention to quality mechanisms in steamers too?
Always liked the B12, was my first model Steam engine I had (first model train being a Hornby Cl91 in Intercity) so does bring back memories, might see if I can get the Union Mills one for N Gauge when things clear up a little, already got some teaks for it to haul around! Great video as always Sam! ~James
i have to agree that this is a first class locomotive. I have a BR black version and I'm very tempted to buy another. Btw, I have to ask, why is there a wagon on the grass by Gordon's Hill?.
@@SamsTrains Ah I agree, The B12 is a very cool looking and efficient locomotive, Plus The Black looks smart and has a style to it (as many American Trains were usually painted black and were kept black company by company). But the Green is very Iconic too
Alfred is a character from The Railway Series based on that locomotive, but he only appeared in the picture of "the shed" that was in a blue livery with red lining(In "Edward's Day Out")
Very nice quality! I have a question about these “namm” couplers (if I’m writing that name correctly...). On high-end American model trains the couplers are realistic and true to prototype in using claw couplers, but it seems (to me anyway) that on British model trains the couplers are nothing like the real ones. Am I correct in that or am I missing something? I’ve basically learned about British railroads and models from watching you and an email blog I get form another source. Thanks as always!
Thanks Ken! Yes they're NEM couplers, yes the British model couplings are nothing like the real things, because the knuckle couplers weren't used in the UK - we used screw-link couplings which aren't practical in model form for most people :( Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I'm not a model railway enthusiast however always view your vids as they give excellent insight into the hobby which you clearly love. Question: why don't you fit the 'detail parts'?
Thanks so much Geoff, that's great to hear! I prefer to keep my models in as-new condition where possible... plus I'm a bit clumsy where glue is concerned! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Not sure if anyone has pointed it out and I apologise if you already know but I noticed the centre axel on the tender was locked up during the crawl test
I am lucky enough to get to play with the real one of these - number 8572 - at the North Norfolk Railway, where I volunteer. She is the star of the fleet, helped by being unique, but also looking like everybody's ideal steam loco. LNER green being a big part of that. Not an easy colour to keep clean, especially the boiler. I wonder why Hornby chose not to model 8572?
Ooh lucky you Ian - that's fantastic! I can imagine it being very tricky to maintain that lovely green! That's a good question - did they not do that one?! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That's great to hear! They're the power classifications - the higher the number, the more powerful the loco. F is freight, P is passenger. Both means mixed traffic! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've got the vintage tri-ang one of these, which is weathered... i didn't know it was possible to make a basic loco detailed... but Hornby managed it!!
Ahh fantastic Will, I have a few tri-ang ones too and I love them! Yes these are a huge step up, though I'm still fond of the old version! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam! Love the video (and especially the B12)! I was wondering if you had any plans on buying one of the EFE rail Beattie Well tanks at some point in the future, although the cheapest I have found it is £118!
Search me. But according to YTPGR-13 which stands for Yorktown Tennessee Pearl General Reunion fans-13, Sam, we need to think this question through. When will the L&YR class 8 4-6-0 be released?
Hello! I have this exact model with a different running number, and I’m currently trying to fix it. The motor works perfectly, but the engine runs inconsistently. I saw that one of the plungers that collects electricity from the base keeper plate is lower than it should be. Does anyone know how to fix that?
I have a br black b12 and it does have the boiler separation underneath but it’s pretty new so they may have fixed it or it just hasn’t happened yet but if have for a few months now
The covered axels are a little too covered. The B12 had/have a metal cover over axel. I’d also say, by doing the boiler in metal, the wash out plugs don’t have any detail in them, they just looks lumps. That aside however its stunning model to look at, and having worked on 8572 on many a glorious day on the footplate, it’s mostly very accurate. Only thing that put me off buying one, is it’s so detailed, and my experience’s with Hornby is that will all fall off in seconds. I don’t say that to be snide at Hornby either. But Iv let down so many times by them with previous models. It caused me not to buy this model, despite this being one of my favourite locos to work on. So Sam, how flimsy is the detail on it? Simply because I want to buy one, but seeing the smoke box dart missing, hasn’t allayed my concern that I’d be wasting my money.
Thanks a lot for sharing - good point about the washout plugs, I can see what you mean! All modern locos are pretty fragile, but this one isn't any worse than the rest! The smokebox dart is unfortunate - though that was beyond my control. Provided yours has one from the start, and you're careful with it, you shouldn't have a problem! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam awesome video. hope you don't mind me asking but what camera and lenses do you use for your close ups? I was just thinking about that the other day 🤔
Not that much of a fan of LNER locos, but that livery looks most definitely stunning (especially with the teak coaches), and the way it went round that weird bit of Gordon's Hill? Flippin' impressive. Were I not specifically hunting for SR stock, I'd probably cop this. Great video as always. :)
Your last two model reviews (this and the Bachmann Class 37) have made me say "I want one!" If I ever get an income large enough to support a model railway, I'll credit--or would that be "blame"? ;)--you for getting me back into the hobby.
I might not have the modern B12/3 but I have the older 1970s version. Never liked the poor detail on it and the incorrectly profiled wheels so I decided to refurbish it in order to closely resemble the newer B12/3 as possible.
Yes that's right - that's not how it came as new - while servicing, I sometimes adjust pickups to make better contact with the wheel - I went a bit too far with that one! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, I loved your bachmann class 37 review, Hornby and Bachmann do the class 90, the hornby 90 is a very old design but bachmann have one I am keen to see how much better it will be, maybe one for a future video?
The B12 has been a fan favourite for decades, and this model truly encapsulates the charm and appeal of the class.

I remember buying mine at the hornby visitor and got it along with a black peckett,
I got the black LNER version!
That sounds awesome - the LNER black looks stunning too! :D
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
Yep got one of these and they are remarkable locomotives, possibly one of Hornby's best. Think I got mine for around £122 mark but was kicking myself for putting of buying it for so long as I could have got it for £116 from Hornby's own outlet shop in Swindon which has now sadly closed.
Great to hear that Rob - I think so too - yeah I saw them go down to £116 too - pity about that :9
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love the LNER B12 😊
My love in the Locomotive class began from T1E2H3 Origins of the NWR & attack of the ghost train
my grandad built me one of these out of an old broomstick- my, this brings back so many memories (I actually have it sitting next to me as I write this)! I named it Alfred after the Thomas and Friends OC.
haha a broomstick?! That sounds so lovely!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes some locos are like that unfortunately - you can glue them in place if they keep dropping out!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ayy you did a review on Alfred the Holden b12 (pretty much) quite fine engines
haha yeah I did!! They are very fine! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains could you do a review on a GER LNER J70
Hi Sam love the B12 I used to have one but sent it back. As every time it would try to go around a corner it would fall over. Even though a P2 could navigate the same corner without difficulty.
That's no good Jason - you were right to send it back! Wonder what was going on there?!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains hi Sam do you have any plans to get the 812 calidonien 0-6-0 from rails-sheffield
Thanks Ewan, I think they do too! I don't know the answer to that - I wish they did!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
What an amazing runner you got yourself there. I'm getting myself a new A3 through my model railway club either this week or next
Thanks mate - ooh lovely - those are fantastic models too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Always liked the B12, was my first model Steam engine I had (first model train being a Hornby Cl91 in Intercity) so does bring back memories, might see if I can get the Union Mills one for N Gauge when things clear up a little, already got some teaks for it to haul around!
Great video as always Sam!
~James
Ahh fantastic James - what a great way to start off in the hobby!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i have to agree that this is a first class locomotive. I have a BR black version and I'm very tempted to buy another. Btw, I have to ask, why is there a wagon on the grass by Gordon's Hill?.
Great to hear that Les - I've been tempted by the BR black version myself, looks amazing!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I agree Sam, I’d love to own a OO LNER B12, not sure if I’d buy the black or the iconic Apple Green
Ooh I know - the two are so lovely - I struggled to choose too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Ah I agree, The B12 is a very cool looking and efficient locomotive,
Plus The Black looks smart and has a style to it (as many American Trains were usually painted black and were kept black company by company).
But the Green is very Iconic too
They have a b12 at the north Norfolk railway but it is being serviced
A very lovely model of a very elegant design. Many thanks Sam. (Really like your new lenses as well.)
Thanks Mike - glad you liked them mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Alfred is a character from The Railway Series based on that locomotive, but he only appeared in the picture of "the shed" that was in a blue livery with red lining(In "Edward's Day Out")
Yeah I heard about that - very cool stuff! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Ken! Yes they're NEM couplers, yes the British model couplings are nothing like the real things, because the knuckle couplers weren't used in the UK - we used screw-link couplings which aren't practical in model form for most people :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Im buying one!!!! Best loco ive seen In a long while
I'm not a model railway enthusiast however always view your vids as they give excellent insight into the hobby which you clearly love.
Yes it was! I've just over-adjusted the pickups - will fix it on next service! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains cool👍 sorry my ocd brain was just drawn to it like a magnet😂
I have been tempted to buy one, if only for the fact the b12 is one of my favourite tender engines in real life.
Sounds good Jamie - they are very good models! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The B12 is one of my favorite locomotives. What does the 4P3F and other codes on the back of Hornby boxes mean?
That's great to hear! They're the power classifications - the higher the number, the more powerful the loco. F is freight, P is passenger. Both means mixed traffic! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Normal Sam’s Trains fans: It’s a B12
Thomas fans: A L F R E D
Tbh i wish i had a hornby b12
I have a question is hornbys flying scottsman a good engine?
Sure! They're fine models! :D
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains thanks I will be sure to pick one up! Merry Christmas!
Hi Sam! Love the video (and especially the B12)! I was wondering if you had any plans on buying one of the EFE rail Beattie Well tanks at some point in the future, although the cheapest I have found it is £118!
Thanks so much Oscar - yeah I do plan to review one of those! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Search me. But according to YTPGR-13 which stands for Yorktown Tennessee Pearl General Reunion fans-13, Sam, we need to think this question through. When will the L&YR class 8 4-6-0 be released?
Another impressive loco from the Hornby stable Sam...great review as always...Bob
Thanks a lot Bob, really glad you liked it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hello! I have this exact model with a different running number, and I’m currently trying to fix it. The motor works perfectly, but the engine runs inconsistently. I saw that one of the plungers that collects electricity from the base keeper plate is lower than it should be. Does anyone know how to fix that?
Nice looking loco, wonder if the middle wheel in the tender ever started turning.
Yeah! That's my fault - I adjusted the pickups too far!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam how often should you lubricate/service your locomotives?
I'd recommend every 6 months to a year, depending on how often they're run! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That's one beautiful looking locomotive. I've a Hornby B17 which I'm really impressed with but would like to get one of these.
Thanks mate, the Hornby B17 is lovely too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have a br black b12 and it does have the boiler separation underneath but it’s pretty new so they may have fixed it or it just hasn’t happened yet but if have for a few months now
Yeah! It's not all of them - I've combed loads of images, some are better than others!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I wish i had a train set like you but in my country i can't get any of that stuff but i enjoy seeing others enjoy themselves.also stay safe
Ahh sorry to hear that my friend - hope you can get some one day! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi sam when my request of bachmann toby and J70 Is coming?
Did you make it by superchat? I don't have any record of it :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains No I wrote it in the bachmann hall class new tool video
LNER can be the pride of the line, also im subscribed and i liked the video
Yes indeed - thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Yes , the smokebox dart has fallen off this one. What's next.
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam awesome video. hope you don't mind me asking but what camera and lenses do you use for your close ups? I was just thinking about that the other day 🤔
Hey Thomas, I use a Nikon D750 and quite a variety of lenses. I use extension tubes for the real macro shots! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks a lot mate - I think so too - they did such a good job on this one! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love the b12 and i got it for christmas last year. I enjoy watching the real b12 at sheringham
That's fantastic - glad you got one too!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Your last two model reviews (this and the Bachmann Class 37) have made me say "I want one!" If I ever get an income large enough to support a model railway, I'll credit--or would that be "blame"? ;)--you for getting me back into the hobby.
Glad to hear that Steven - the last two have been outstanding! haha, very happy to be blamed for that! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
And sam is this b12 the old one u reviewed 2 year ago I think
Yes it's the same one! :D
Hi Sam, It's a lot better than the one I have, love the crawl , All the Best Brian 🤗
Thanks a lot Brian - yeah the crawl was amazing! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have one of there but it is broken out the box and the moter is blown up and I haven’t though about getting it fixed yet
I might not have the modern B12/3 but I have the older 1970s version. Never liked the poor detail on it and the incorrectly profiled wheels so I decided to refurbish it in order to closely resemble the newer B12/3 as possible.
Ooh very nice - did it turn out good? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
18:35 You appear to have a brake dragging on the centre axle of the tender. The P/W guys will love you. LOL
it happens when the pickups press too hard on the wheels.
Thanks a lot for the idea - that would be fun to try! :D
