I liked the video and agree that its not a great upgrade unless you need it to be that thin and the 2017 pro is a better computer by far my 2012 13" pro will actually give the AIR a run for its money for price to performance still. the Geekbench 4 results for the new AIR where leaked already and its very good as a dual core but gets stomped by anything higher up the food chain so I agree its a incremental upgrade not a revolutionary one would have liked to see a lower price on it keeping it around a $1000 the new mini is a better addition.

SSD is not that expensive these days. 256GB SSD costs 34 usd retail. So........ it does not justify the 256GB upgrade of the macbook air. They ask 200 more for that. Which is just a ripoff. They should have made it a 256 GB Standard.

The new air will give you significantly better battery life and good enough performance, not too different from the pro if you look at Geekbench, also the Pro model you are looking at was updated in 2017 not 2018, has the butterfly keyboard that sort of fails, the air has the 3rd generation keyboard. The pro will give you somewhat better performance and bitter display, but wait for the reviews, in your case I would definitely get the air for touch id and battery life :)

I pre-ordered the new MacBook Air prior to watching your video and felt a tinge of regret. But I’m simply a student looking for the most portable laptop without sacrificing the real estate on the screen (the 12 inch one is simply too small for me as I’ve to read many pages of text). So while the new MacBook Air has specs that pale in comparison with the MacBook Pro, it’s still my first choice. Informative video though! You’ve scored yourself a new subscriber!

    • @sphexie

Matthew Holubowicz the unfortunate thing is that I had a MacBook Pro 2016 (first gen keyboard) and MacBook retina 12 (second gen keyboard) and they never had a problem with it. My MacBook Pro 2018 though had a space bar problem after 2 weeks of owning it. So it’s kinda weird that I never had a problem with the “broken” ones but found a broken one among those that should have been fixed. Nonetheless I enjoy it after Apple swapped the entire bottom part. They did a great job and for me they are the best laptops around. For reference I also use a dell xps 13 and a dell xps 15 at my job.

Radu Bontea I just don't like the butterfly switch mechanism, the scissor mechanism were alot better. You have had experience with them, how do you find it ? It is especially bad with apple as the trend in the rest of the industry has been towards mechanical keyboards but apple did not get the memo.

    • @jonathonrosalia9345
      @jonathonrosalia9345 6 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sphexie the more reliable option is the 2015 MacBook pros and earlier I love my 2012 13" and I wouldn't want to get any of the new ones to many compromises for thin and light I keep hearing the need for a "retro" MacBook with the old keys and upgraded insides you can fit a 30 hour battery in a old Mac body along with a GPU in a 13" so that would be a hell of a upgrade over the whole lineup maybe a i9 with proper cooling, 10Gb ethernet port SD card reader and thunderbolt 3 since CDs are dead that's a huge space to use.

  • @h.m.4137

The biggest problem with the MacBook Pro (2017, base model) is the second generation butterfly keyboard which is "not so good". As MacBooks does not have touchscreens (and I do not say they should) this is the only way to write on this device. It is a big gamble to buy a laptop with a problematic keyboard, which costs a lot to repair. Otherwise it was a great video!

I picked up the new air 256GB for $1200 on sale from Best Buy. I have a surface laptop with similar specs and the Air is a bit snappier. I never used the touch screen on my surface so I don't care about having touch screen. I thought about upgrading to the Surface Laptop 2 for the new gen i5 but I hate that it doesn't have Thunderbolt 3 and I got tired of the constant windows updates. So I made the move back to MacOS and went with the Air over the Pro for 2 reasons. I used my wife's 12'' MacBook Retina and that has the 1.3GHz i5 and its amazing at multitasking. I only will be using this one for school and business. 2. The battery life. I need something that will last me all day long. Honestly, I hope this laptop lasts me for years to come and I don't have problems with the keyboard (my only con).

If I get a 2017 13" Macbook Pro instead of the new Air, should I worry about the MBP keyboard reliability? Is the 2017 MBP covered under the keyboard replacement program?
I'm looking to get my first ever Mac computer, and I thought the Air would be a good option. Uses would be programming mainly and some web browsing/streaming video. No gaming at all.

Help!! I wanted a MacBook Air for 5 years..finally caved 10 months ago and bought one. Just my luck, not even a year later they redesign the whole thing for what’s basically the first time. Do I sell it and upgrade? Or do I keep this one? I’m a senior in high school and this computer is supposed to last me through college...any advice is appreciated!

The only flaw of new Mac’s since 2013 is the lack of upgradability. Don’t forget to buy a backup disk with your MacBook Air 💻 ( if it dies on you say goodbye to your data)

Regarding the recycled aluminium used in the new Air, it’s only from shavings which have been re-alloyed for this new model. It doesn’t (yet?) use recycled aluminium from previous products or reprocessed recycled aluminium!

The Acer Flip 14 is a way better choice, with touch screen, way more options including dedicated graphics and runs on 4 cores, not 2 and costs a lot less. Common Apple, get back in the game, and not keep playing catchup.

Mac OS is very well optimized. Sadly it is a dual core, but it still runs like butter. Booting up the system and opening applications is more reliant on the SSD than the CPU anyways, so unless you’re going to do CPU intensive things, the “i5” *cough* m5 *cough* CPU is more than enough.
MacBooks still have plenty of advantages the biggest probably being the OS following build quality, speakers, and the unmatched SSD speeds.
I guess they both have their ups and downs. The Acer Flip 14 is a very good laptop.

Thanks for this video by the way. You did a good job of highlighting how the new MacBook Air is basically just a suped-up version of the 12 inch MacBook, making it a rather pointless upgrade to go from the 12 inch to the new air.
You might’ve saved me a small fortune there 😂

You completely misunderstand the scaled resolution. This does not change the actual resolution of the display but scales the UI to the comparable resolution listed. So it doesn’t matter if the scaled resolution is not an even multiple of the actual resolution like back in the day when we had to change the actual resolution. Apple’s decision to call it scaled resolution doesn’t help either
