Signs That You are a Backup Candidate

  • In today's video, I share the signs that you are a backup candidate. In recruitment it is very common for there to be a front-runner candidate and several backup candidates that are there for just in case. In this video, I explain why this is the case, why it won't be changing anytime soon, and how to tell if you are that backup candidate or one of the front-runner candidates. Being a candidate can be confusing, this video tries to demystify some of the process so you can be less stressed and plan better.

I think I've become a backup candidate - made it through all the jumps and hoops to the point where I was asked for references and salary expectations after my final interview, and was told during said interview that they'd get back to me at the end of the week. So they did get back to me later that week only to tell me "Hey! At the interview we said we'd get back to you by Friday, but we have unfortunately not reached a decision yet, so we will get back to you next week" - sadly this sounds to me like I'm just being kept warm for the time being. Great videos btw, appreciate the channel, cheers!

I refuse to be the silver, bronze or no medal candidate!! I have to be numero uno, always!! If I find out I'm the 2nd, 3rd or 4th place candidate, I mean, sucker...I will not continue in the interview process and will pass! Great video, Ben!!

This does happen all the time... to me. I've been the backup in every interview series I've been in for the past 3 years. 🙃The primary has always accepted the role, though they have not always worked out.

The truth that most people will never hear (unless they find out on their own) is that being known to the company is far more important that your actual credentials. An average candidate who is personally referred to the hiring manager will generally have a huge advantage over a stellar candidate who is a blind applicant. This is why networking is so important.

I refuse to make this a friend thing and I guess why all my jobs are blind. I always get them of course because I am great at what I do but guys honestly forget all that sucking up junk and being buddy buddy with everyone. When I see those guys at the company outings and just out on jobs shaking 100’mens hands and smiling at them it makes me laugh. Everyone can see through the fakeness of it. When you eventually get fired or move on it will be for good reasons. Most of the guys I see leave that shouldn’t even have been hired are because of personal disputes..maybe they didn’t kiss enough butt that month or maybe the boss realizes his profits would be better with a guy who is actually just simply better at the job. You young 20 something’s just keep believing it’s all about friends. This is business.

    • @joshuaafcutler7348

@@Derek2k Networking doesn't mean sucking up to anybody. It just means meeting key decision makers so they know who you are. That alone makes the difference.

Excellent video Ben! I’ve brought on several backup candidates throughout my HR career. Some ended up getting the offer but that’s because our number one declined or something happened.

I have been on a hiring process for almost a month, 3 rounds interviews, right before 3rd interview i have been asked to sign for background check, i have been asked to do a behavioral assessment 3 business days after, on the last interview with the manager and director, i felt i was the front row candidate, after hearing them saying, you are going to like working with the team, especially with this manager, manager was very positive and optimistic during the second interview, i have been told that the environment is friendly and the training is good, there will be a learning curve of 6 months +/-.
Now from HR side and from the get-go, she keeps saying that there is other candidates and she is also asking if i am applying to other jobs -_- .
Dude at this point, for sure Black lives matter, Candidates lives matter as well ...

Could you do a video on the topic of nepotism (favoring friends, family, etc) in hiring and how to deal with it? It’s a real problem

As a Black woman. . . I can attest to the fact that I have a knack for ALWAYS being the number two! LOL
Cincinnati Ballet. GBBN. ArtsWave. LPK. Landor (I did get to create a case study for Olay but they only used part of my design. 😅)
Prayers up for me. Recently, this is my 4th, final interview with a notable arts non-profit in the midwest.
I am determined to work at least ONCE within my field of study. (I'll be sure to come back with an update!)
Wishing you all the most success in your endeavors!

Haven’t heard back in a week since my final interview with the regional director. She told me that the The hiring manager would
Get back to me… it’s been a week and I sent a follow up but nothing… as an HR director who hires candidates in less than 2 weeks, this is a red flag. Don’t wait around for companies! Take the power back!

Hi Ben, timely video for me. I am in a hiring process. Been told it’s the year end/beginning the team is busy and their recruiting has been put on the back burner. That’s been over a month, which makes me start to think something else is going on and I might be a back up..

Ben, I am having a call with Tesla recruiter tomorrow to “touch point” on the panel review about me they had yesterday. My interview was done last week. I am unsure what touch point is…i was expecting a straightforward answer from the recruiter about being selected or not.. but this is a touch point call.. i am unsure what to expect. Could you please help?

I have a job interview later for a unit coordinator position. They told me about the benefits and everything they told me which benefits are good to pick and they say that my recruiter has coupons and stuff for my uniforms. Does that mean I score Job or what does it mean?

The recruiters touched base with me on an interview I had last week with them. They said they are still working their way through the selection process and will get back to me this week. I also noticed that HR was cc’d in that email so I’m thinking I may be a backup candidate. In the mean time I’ve continued to apply for other jobs while I am waiting to hear back.

I was told I was a backup candidate... after the company told me to take my drug test they did a background check... pull my education from my college and told me the date I will start working... on that date... the recruiter told me I was a backup candidate... I turned down several offers because the recruiter a sure me that I had the position.
I was so hurt... then they hired me for a week... came up with some kind of excuse.
