- So technically a cover of Duane Elm's 1987 song , and stretching the bounds of "Sea Shanty"; Dawson's Christian is a tale about a future ghostship named the "Christian" and it's bold captain Jayme Dawson. I'll let you learn more about the story from the song.
I personally would like to re-record this in the future, so, given enough views/likes (lets say 1k likes) I'll put it on the list for a re-record. I'd also be looking to do a full music video if I get the chance, or someone is interested in a collab. Lyrics below:

Jayme Dawson was the Captain of the Christian and her crew,
And he flew and fought the Christian in the War of '82.
Now the Christian was the tightest ship 'tween here and Charlemagne,
And the crew of Jayme Dawson was the same.

They were jumped by three light cruisers though they were no match for one.
As they came to general quarters and they sent out the alarm,
Jayme must have known they'd fin'lly bought the farm.

But they say he made his bargain with some power of the night
That he sold his soul to win his final fight
No one living saw that battle though the fleet was quick to leave.
When they reached the site they found a scene no sane man could believe.
Dead in space lay three light cruisers, cut to ribbons all around,
But no sign of Dawson's Christian could be found.
There are stories of the Dutchman, the Celeste and Barnum's Pride,
There are stories of the Horseman and the Lady at his side,
But the tale that makes my blood run cold, the more because it's true,
Is the tale of Jayme Dawson and his crew,

I was second mate on Hera's Dream, a freighter of the line.
We were shipping precious metals to the colony on Nine.
It was on the second watch of that most uneventful flight,
When the pirate ships appeared out of the night.
Now to me there was no question, for they had us four to one,
And you can't fight dirty pirates when your freighter has no gun.
So we stood by to be boarded by a party yet unseen,
When another ship appeared upon our screen.
First we thought it just a pirate, but the vector was all wrong.
Then we thought it might be rescue, but the signal wasn't strong.
And when our hailing brought no answer, and I felt a sudden dread,
For we saw her shields were up and glowing red.
Now the courage of that single ship is shown by very few,
And I thought none but a madman would fly her as she flew.
She was outgunned, she was outnumbered, but a cheer came from our lips,
When she swung to fire on the pirate ships.
And the strangers beams burned brighter than all beams I'd seen before.
And the strangers shields were harder than the heart of any whore.
As the battle rent the ether, while we watched and shook our heads,
The pirate ships were cut to bloody shreds.

For the pirate fleet was shattered and the stranger's ship had won.
She matched v and lay beside us, and we watched her full of awe,
Then she dropped her shields and this is what we saw.

And we knew that when it happened, every soul on board had died.
Then she rolled to show her markings, and we read them and we knew,
The fate of Jayme Dawson and his crew.
She was the Christian... and a grave for all her crew...
Then she turned as if to leave us, but instead began to fade,
First her hull, and then her bulkheads, as we trembled there afraid,
But there are twenty men who'll swear with me, the last to slip from view,
Were the bones of Jayme Dawson and his crew.

I just remembered a song that you can reconstruct for your second American civil war "no longer gray or blue", pretty great song in my opinion.

yeah cutting NASA's funding post apollo is a contender for the biggest mistake in human history, if they had kept up apollo level funding SO MUCH shit that is borderline science fiction would be normal, climate change would've been solved back in the 1990s, the internet would be commonplace by 1980, most technology would be 2 or 3 decades ahead, material science would be at such a level that carbon nanotubes might not even be the strongest material, there moon would be an urban metropolis and there would be full blown cities on mars, there would be outposts on every planet, we would be well underway with construction of a dyson swarm around the sun which when completed would give us an effectively endless energy source (even a single percent of the sun's energy in a week is thousands of times the entire energy consumption of humanity in the past 200,000 years), space travel would be so common going to the moon would be comparable to going to europe for a vacation today, we already would've sent multiple probes to proxima centauri and would be planning to send people there in the next few years, keep in mind none of this is science fiction, none of this requires new physics, none of this requires materials which don't exist...

Match V is actually talking about velocity. Things in space don't really slow down, and it's really big, so you gotta match relative velocity to stay near someone.

Lore of Dawson's Christian - Alderon Tyran momentum 100
This is halfway to a second version I know. Everyone copies the original but I had a boot of another that had the verse piece about the power of the night, and also included slightly different wording, like naming the shipping line owner, and describing the battle and aftermath differently.
My reference to part of that is the one from Vixy and Tony.
Interesting, as these are not Duane's original lyrics. Not sure where they came from. Vixy's maybe?

Your like the only other guy I've found do a version of this.
A pity that Adleron went with the later variant lyrics. The added line "bargain with some power of the night" is rather out of character with the rest of the song. The darkness has no interest in a ships which arrives to save the helpless, nor with people who seem to see their duty as eternal. Not so much that Dawson didn't make a bargain, mind you, but with a rather different sort of power.

My headcanon is that he made his bargain with the Lady of the Morning Star, as heard in Leslie Fish's "Chickasaw Mountain". Remember, not everything that has power in the night is unholy.
