Glad I found these videos. There is a Metals Supermarket around the corner from me but when I went in asking for knife blade steel I was told they only had one stock suitable and it was a small inch by an eighth bar. Not what I wanted but seeing these videos and checking the website it looks like there is actually a chance I'll find what I need.
sounds like the perfect size for a good knife blade. If you can Blacksmith weld that piece inside of some mild steel, you will have the perfect knife blank...

Some silly questions probably but, with all these different compositions of steel, what do they do when it comes to recycling? Do they simply melt them all down into one, then somehow remove the carbon? I didn't know aluminum was used in steel, can you separate the two after the manufacturing process?
Leaf springs , high carbon steal ,springy , bounces back from a blow , elastic , it's also very hard , slightly brittle , and it's made for g.m.engeneers , high qualiety every time . Heat to red hot and cool it slowly , it will soften ,enough to work , it will mush when struck by a hammer when reheated to red hot.and a hack saw blade will bite into it...good luck
The four types of steel and carbon steels well explained. Thank you for posting such good content that has instructional value ! We manufacture precision parts and components with most grades of steel.
im not an english person , can someone explain the word at 1:27 .. ''with drawing quality steel'' ? or ''with draught quality steel'' ? or is it something else.. >_
I’m trying to learn about steel so I don’t sound like an idiot when I need to buy some… I got a piece of angle iron from Home Depot the other day and it just says plain steel…😂 WTH does that even mean? Lmao they hung it in me for a 4 foot piece too. 🤦🏻 I guess I’ll be buying from you guys from now on at the Chattanooga store.
The questions were well thought and not simple. I think Matt did not answer them, but still threated the questioners with far more respect and decency than the TPUSA guy, although there was some unnecessary name-calling to Nick. I appreciated all the questions, they were actually conservatives questions.
It's kind of weird to explain, but here I go: Hardness is about superficial hardness (if something is hard to scratch), and brittleness is about how this steel behaves at some level of stress. A brittle steel, at high stress, fails suddenly, and a ductile (the opposite of brittle) steel deforms a lot until it breaks.
Great 3 min of informative and concise video. Thanks!
Crystal clear explanation....Thankyou so much Jason...loved the way you presented.

9260 , 5160 , 1060 , 1065 , 1070, 1095 , T10 , T8 , and 1055 are all good to use as sword steel , I personally like 5160 spring steel and T10 steel .
5160 🤝
5160!

Does carbon steel have iron? What percentage of iron is in carbon steel?
Hi please tell the alternative material for lead?
Nice
What about the steels with VERY high carbon content, like 20% carbon steel?
Great Video on Carbon Steels Thanks Again!

Wish the Greenville SC office carried med to high carbon steel or tool steel O1, N1, S7, or N2.

Low alloy tool steel, 5160
Good video

2:57 I didn't get this point , how come it become hard and brittle ?

@@paulolange3462 glass is hard but brittle
As a wise man once said ar500 is harder than a whores heart
Who else is here to figure out what type of steel to use for swords?
Morgan you want two types a hard and a soft, hard edge and bevel and springy soft spine
well youre assuming he is making a japanese style sword, which maybe he is
No, but I did just WATCH like three of the tutorials on how to craft a sword so yeah Im definitely on topic hahaa
Look at yard sales or creags list
