- Steel is an engineering material, that finds diverse applications in all kinds of products from aerospace to kitchen wares.
It's a term that describes an entire family of metal alloys.
The basic components of all steel materials are iron and carbon.
There are many grades of steel, but most people categorize it into two broad groups - stainless steel and carbon steel.
Stainless steel is a type of steel which have good corrosion resistance due to the addition of chromium and other alloying elements.
The chromium is key - it reacts with oxygen to create a passive layer that prevents oxidation and protects the steel from rusting.
Based on microstructure, broadly four major categories of stainless are available. They are:
● Austenitic stainless steel
● Ferritic stainless steel
● Martensitic stainless steel
● Duplex stainless steel.
Carbon steel on the other hand is a steel, that contains mainly iron and up to 2.1% carbon. They may contain a small amount of other alloying elements, but carbon is the primary ingredient.
It is an iron-carbon alloy. Therefore, susceptible to rust, unlike stainless steel.
Carbon steel is categorized into three types. They are:
● Low carbon steel (mild steel)
● Medium carbon steel (plain steel)
● High carbon steel
This video discusses these two broad categories because their essential difference is what gives them their distinct physical characteristics. Though they have the same basic composition of iron and carbon. Steel types tend to have a variety of alloying elements.

It's not the content but a low frequency mellow sound of the narration which makes a good and relatable content to learn something relevant
Very interesting and poignant . You don’t waste the viewer’s time with fluff and jokes just straight to the point. Liked and subbed.
Feels likr it was written by AI.
I made a knife blade out of 154-CM stainless steel one time. After cold wet-grinding it and having it heat treated properly, I attempted to finish it down by hand. This material is used in the United States as commercial jet aircraft fan blades, and I soon found out that it was one of the toughest, most abrasive-resistant stainless I'd ever worked. I plunged it thru a sheet-steel folding chair with only minor deformation to the tip. (my wife was not pleased.)
6:31 high carbon steel is the hardest and toughest carbon steel ( i think high carbon steel is not the toughest due to its low ductility and low carbon steel or medium carbon steel is typically tougher ) and thank you for your content it was a highly educational video
ATTENTION GUYS: Hello Guys, If You Like And Want To Follow Videos Related To Mild Steel Plates Or Steel Related Queries, You Can Visit Our Channel. Thanks
Enjoyed this vey informative video. Lot of detailed information put into this video. This video was put together by men of expert grade knowledge. If anyone of us tried to research the different types of steel and how they are used in industry it would take days of research. Followed by organization of all notes and then the video production, no easy task.
Thank you very much for the information
Nice definition
Just found your channel and Subscribed. Very nice work
thanks
Thanks for your very informative video sir,
Great 🎉
good
i came here after i saw P&ID which tell they use slaker tank (reactor) made of carbon steel instead of stainless steel to make slaked lime. Isn't carbon steel vulnerable to corrosion? Why they choose carbon steel over stainless steel?
anyway great video
very informative and interesting, however I do find the background music annoying and unnecessary :)
Very annoying music......
So many videos do this 🤬
*If I have a piece of steel in front of me, how can I recognize which one is this? Is there any sort of tip OR lab test or what, how can I identify the class and understand wether it's Stainless Steel or Carbide Steel?*
which type for rebar?
you'd be surprised, they melt it all together
Which type and grade of steel would you guys recommened in the following situation:
-Furniture office
-The steel is gonna be for the look so it will be painted.
-It had to be magnatic
- soundblocking if possible
-I am Not gonna bend it (maybe a small part, like a 90 degree.
-it has to be a plate (1m by 2m of 1.5 mm thick
Pls help
mild steel
Apples and oranges. No mention of alloy steel or tool steel? SS is way too soft for an edged weapon unless it is a SS alloy of some type.

Please consider redoing the audio. The machine-generated audio is terrible.
I could volunteer to do human voice overs.
I prefer high carbon tungsened yieldy tensiley titaniumdioxided one
Stainless Steel = Poormans Titanium 😉
No wonder my axle keeps rusting
Learn the plural of words and syntax... of English, maybe you'll get more subs.
Agreed. It sounds like it was written in Chinese, run through Google Translate into English, then read by a robot.
“Endeavor to watch to the end.” No one uses “endeavor” in this context.
Very informative now I understand why the engineers would specify what welding rod to use on their projects. It would be better if it was slowed down for my old brain ,but I sure like when there is text because it's hard to hear with music. Thank you
