You guys are amazing - we can't thank you enough for your fundraising, these daily videos and your great resilience (hopefully no dogs and locusts/crickets tomorrow). A huge THANK YOU from all at Get Kids Going! and all the young athletes you are supporting. BIG THANKS to everyone who has made a donation on the JustGiving page. It's simply wonderful.

Couple of things. 1) airhorn (which you have) or mace for the dogs. works AMAZING! 2) that section is tricky to get through and I have had the same issues with busy roads. Bastrop is the WORST. 3) Those gravel shoulders are basically "chip seal". Its Texas thing. Most of our highways have huge shoulders, probably because its cheap. 4) Kamoot is sending you on some straight up dangerous stuff, amigo. You are in the Hill Country of Texas now. You can ride paved Ranch Roads without ANY traffic for endless miles!

A former co-worker of mine retired and rode "the Four Corners". In a nutshell, the route you 2 are doing now, plus across the top of the US, and also the 2 coast lines (Atlantic Coast, Pacific Coast). He then wrote a book about the whole experience (look up "Bicycling the Four Corners" if you are interested).
I remember him mentioning later that the dogs in Texas are notorious. When riding through Texas, it was a constant thing to see them coming out from underneath porches and chasing you down.
    Be on the ready!

Just incase you get chased by dogs again, there is a pepper spray that can be used against aggressive dogs. It comes as a small compressed cannister about the size of a mini pump. It's harmless but deters them!
Carry beef jerky and throw it as you ride past, or as a last resort just try shouting sit in a very commanding way!!!

Unlike the bugs from yesterday, dogs are a serious issue. I live in Central Florida and run into this situation more often than I'd like. Even if they don't want to eat you, I've seen several cyclists get wrecked by a dog running right out in front of them. No idea why people let their dogs run free like that. Glad you both escaped unharmed. Onward and, obviously upward tomorrow.

USE THE PUMP TO PREFILL THE TUBE WITH AIR.
The talc function is to take up the small amount off humidity in the air from a pump.
The talc can't absorb all the humidity coming from a human breath.
Then the tube start to rotten inside withing a few hours and give you an puncture within a week.

@@stubbingtonmarigold3032 Elgin/Manor is not rural? What? Have you ever been there? It's all ranches, farms, and fields. There are a few subdivisions popping up here and there but it's mostly very rural

I've had dogs give chase for a half-mile, or more. Some dogs are incredibly fast.

You can hear the slow disdain in their voice for American infrastructure growing each episode, and I'm here for it.

They did ride the frontage road of US 290 through Austin, essentially a highway. I’ve biked thousands of miles a year in Austin and never once ridden that road. They missed all the good cycling routes with lanes and scenery etc through town, even a few dedicated bike paths away from any roads. Totally understandable when planning from a distance, and trying to make the route as short as possible, but 290 should not be seen as representative of cycling infra in Austin. It’s not perfect, but way better than the roads they were on.
