      Freddie Starr was an all round entertainer, not just a comedian! The man didn't just stand up on stage telling jokes, he entertained the audience through song, dance, jokes, impersonations, and audience interaction. His Elvis impressions are probably one of the best things he was known for, as he had the voice down to a tee! He was a true legend of Britain, one of their best, yet his country let him down in the end! The media as usual talked sh*t about Freddie as they do all the time, things that were not true. This broke Freddie's heart, and he moved to Spain to live to try and get away from all the heartache! He lost his tour dates, his status, his reputation, and eventually his life due to the media and people listening to the crap they talk! Unfortunately, the man who was one of Britain's finest, was forgotten about overnight and left to rot! Freddie died alone and sad in Spain, renting a room above a bar where he performed every night to make rent. He died heartbroken in my opinion, and thousands of the people "who claimed they loved him", didn't even show up at his funeral as they were "too proud" to be seen at it, due to the allegations against him! SHAME ON THEM! I'm from Northern Ireland, but I was lucky to see Freddie live a few times in Blackpool UK, and actually talk to him! He was a gentleman. R.I.P Freddie 💖💥

    The reason the audience was laughing in the first section was that they knew Freddie's mischievous nature. He did great unpredictable and crazy interactions with the audience and with hosts. As you heard he was also a great singer. You should watch his appearance with Mohammed Ali on the Parkinson show. Keep up the good work.

    • @cmsxcb
      @cmsxcb ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah. A lot of the giggling at the beginning was nervous laughter because Freddie was notoriously unpredictable. In "An Audience With Freddie Starr" he threw a whole box of live maggots down the (not inconsiderable) cleavage of Faith Brown (a fellow performer) who was in the audience. He actually started out as a singer and his band was signed by the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein.
      He was also a notable impressionist, ranging from Elvis to Adolf Hitler. He was also a keen horse racing advocate and one of his horses won the Grand National Steeplechase in 1994.
      Despite appearing to be 'on the edge' all the time, Freddie was alcohol free all his life as a result of his father's (a boxer) alcoholism which often resulted in him being beaten as a child (his father once breaking both his legs and leading to him becoming an elective mute) until he was taken into the care system. He was also a vegetarian - although there was once a famous tabloid headline 'Freddie Starr ate my hamster' - a totally false accusation, as were later claims of him being a sexual child predator after the Police investigation into Jimmy Saville sex abuse scandal (the only connection appeared to be that they both appeared in Clunk-Click, a 1970's tv campaign promoting the use of safety-belts in cars). However, the Police's statement that he wasn't being prosecuted due to 'insufficient evidence' led to many newspapers assuming that he was guilty but it couldn't be proved and they continued a sporadic tabloid war with him until his death.

  • @cmsxcb
    @cmsxcb 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The thing with Freddie was that he was a lunatic on stage with no inhibitions and the audience knew it. So the slow start was deliberate - it made the audience a little nervous wondering if he was going to involve them (hence the nervous titters, even though he wasn't really doing anything to merit a laugh). That meant that, when he finally did start his routine, the audience relaxed a little and went with him wherever he wanted to take them. An example of this is on An Audience With Freddie Starr where he throws a huge handful of live maggots down the 'more than ample' cleavage of another actress/comedienne called Faith Brown who was in the audience and wasn't expecting a maggoty ambush. She's probably still in therapy, but the rest of the audience was putty in his hands from that moment.

    We saw Freddie three times, the first twice in a small club and were solo shows, the last was in a large theatre and he ‘shared’ the bill with his pal Lennie Bennett, which was a riot. In his solo shows he did mimicking of many well known people, which he was great at, plus he sang a lot of late 1950s/early 1960s songs. Some couples were enjoying it so much that they got onto the dance floor, where he was performing, and danced whilst he sang - he nodded to the bouncers to let them on, three couples. I had seen him on TV and although I thought he was those short appearances didn’t tell the full story and I wasn’t that bothered about seeing him, but I think some pals had seen him previously and bigger him up, so I decided to give him a try and, as will realise, he was fantastic. What a performer and artist. RIP Freddie.

    Wow def blast from the past. Freddie Star was legendary this routine, was legendary and yes that was ALL...Freddie. He was 1 of the most unique and best talents this country ever had. He got his break off a very well known talent show in the late 60's but yeah he was a master of the whole voice effect comedy. The amount of craft and technique he put into his routines was so off the scale an audience every time would be in hysterics. Some of the so so called comedians of today where content to use content that is quick one liners not funny and even stirring up controversy, could take a lesson from the time and craft Freddie put into his routines and shows. And yeah with all that he could sing as well...when your singing with Elvis's old backing group as he did you get found out quick if you can't!! RIP Freddie, much missed!!

    I'm a 48 year old Brit and there was quite a lot of this stuff when I was a little kid. Pure chaos. Not that the USA hasn't also perfected that for a long time (I LOVE some Marx Bros movies). I think it's all great for 'down time' for our parents after work, as it's so stupid and escapist - and long, silly sketches are more chill than the kind of quickfire humour you get nowadays in Big Bang Theory etc. Similarly, people like the comedians Dave Allen, Victoria Wood and Ronnie Corbett would do almost 'calming' comedy story monologues that intentionally took a long time and weaved in and out of absurdity.
    Freddie Starr was made even more notorious by the (misleading) front page headline "Freddie Starr ate my hamster" on The Sun newspaper, which was the country's top tabloid at the time. He was also famous for things like his celebrity special, where his audience was full of British celebrities from the era and he'd interact with them. Sometimes they looked pretty scared, as he's highly unpredictable!

    The early laugher was due to the previous sketch and yes the slow and speedy voice was infact' him. He was a comedian and impersonator. To give you some idea just how good he was ,you need to see Freddy Star and The Jordanaires ' Elvis's backing singers no less' and even though he was a shor guy they said he was the Elvis impersonator they had ever seen.

    Completely 100% live, as it happened. You were a brave person if you went to one of his shows, he went into the audience and basically made you the scapegoat of his jokes.
    The real ironic thing was, he didn't need to try these jokes, he was a great singer......... but he preferred to have a good laugh

    Freddie Starr was a phenomenal comic and a brilliant singer, I'm sure that if he hadn't have made it as a comedian he would have had a very successful singing career

    I remember seeing Freddie in Soho, London in the mid-70s. He was wearing white shoes, a white suit and a black shirt. His companion was a startlingly beautiful blonde. She must have been nearly 6' tall. She was slender as a reed and wore a long white dress. The dress's neckline plunged almost to her waist. The dress also sported a slit skirt, on the left hand side, up to her hip. My god she was perfect.
