There are tours to these rooms. They don’t happen very often and are a little bit more expensive than the regular ticket, but it is definitely worth it! The groups have usually no more then 10 people. These appartements are EXTREMELY small if you consider the amount of tourists and visitors Versailles receives everyday, so it’s comprehensible that they’re not open to the big public.
There are tons of rooms which aren't furnished either. All of the furniture was auctioned off during the French revolution and since then the government has tried to get it back or to recreate it as it would have been. For this there is a ton historical research to make it as close as possible, there's a documentary here on TH-cam about restorers that use the same manufacturing techniques as those from the 18th century. The process is very time consuming.
It 100 percent would not be as interesting if you didnt have a guide...and most people do not. It would just be a series of small lightly decorated rooms as ooposed to the grand rooms of the king and queen, the grand trianon etc...
Read the memoirs of the Duc de Saint Simon, who was elevated to his dukedom during during the latter part of Louis XIV's reign and was among the prominent courtiers at Versailles for many years. I am in the process of reading the memoirs right now during this lockdown, as transcribed in 3 books by Lucy Norton. You can actually feel exactly what it was like from day to day. Saint Simon is an excellent writer and it's an incredibly detailed memory of life at Versailles with all of it's triumphs, tragedies, love, death and personal human conflict. Absolutely fascinating, if you want to know what it was truly like from the inside.

You really get the feel of what it was like to live there, and he was so detailed at analyzing people's personalities and motivations. A valuable skill for someone in his position. Another one I really enjoyed Petite was the book of collected "Letters From Lisalotte." Princess Charlotte was married to Louis XIV's bisexual brother and wrote literally thousands of letters about life at Versailles. She had a lot of power, but she was not very popular and felt an outsider at court. She poured out her feelings in letter after letter, many to her aunt, who was the mother of George I of England. When I read them I felt like I got to know her personally, almost like she was writing them recently, but of course it was many hundreds of years ago. I'll tell you, both those books I felt immersed in and was sorry to see them end.
Man I wish I had money to travel all the time! I just want to visit all historical castles/homes/sites in Europe. So much history. I love America and it’s historical sites, but it’s just not as much and as old as Europe.

It was only Pompadour he didn't have sex with. She didn't really like sex so she instead supplied the king with lots of women. There was a place a house I don't recall the name that had some of the women who were mistresses. They were found for him. The children he had with them or at least with some of them got the last name Aimé. I think Madame Du Barry really loved him and she was a kind person. After his death she would help the people in the village where she lived. She got a new lover and he was killed very brutally and his head thrown into her garden or house. No he didn't. He died from I think you call it the smallpox in English. So when he died he looked awful full of puss all over and he smelled awful too and he was all blackened very sad when you think of it he was a handsome man. There is a great documentary about him but it is Swedish and this guy tells the story so you feel that you are there watching:) I haven't read any books about Royalty in years as I started genealogy and found my own ancestors were much more interesting because they were MY family and showed the history of the kind of people they didn't write much about through history while others were well known and made me want to know more:)

But only if the monarchy treated all of their citizens fairly, not just the aristocracy..it’s so important to remember that the French people were literally starving back then for so long 😢 and the monarchy just didn’t seem concerned about their terrible situation. They were raised to believe they were more important and never thought about the “lower classes”. That’s not fair. I’ve lived good and I’ve lost it all too. I know what it’s like to be in need and lucky in our time we can get help, but back then nobody cared. After the 2nd world war in Europe some family still didn't have running water and they were bathing only once a week. The entire family in the same bucket. (Not together)

Something happened to me when I was in my 20's I went to Paris and my companion was not at all interested in Versailles but we got a taxi and went there. I was allowed exactly 1 hour to look around it was a place to spend hours and hours in as I have always been interested in it. Just as I was dashing back to the taxi I passed a sign pointing to the Petit Trianon - but no time to stop! It was great to see just a little of it but imagine having only one hour and not getting to see much of it😅. Still God willing I might get to go back and be able to spend a lot more time there😊. I love seeing these secret rooms I am surprised that the beds are so small though they are more like chaise longs or day beds. I love the decor in Madame de Pompodour 's apartment so delicate and beautifully tinted like her choice in clothes and decor

Also the beds with the rolls on the end are day beds Im fairly sure which are for lounging and .... other ... fun activities often the actual bed that was used at night was in a separate room and was very personal, only the resident, lawful parther and servants would enter there.

Random fact (for people who could be interested) you rarely see anything for bathing, as it was not a common practice: people thought the water would transmit diseases through the pores of the skin, and were not comfortable being naked. Some also thought that because bathing would open your pores, the devil and evil could also get to you through the skin. Movies about this era always depict beautiful and well dressed people when most of them actually had really poor hygiene and wore makeup, powder, wigs and scented pouches to hide it!

English tours were discontinued for lack of interest, but they do offer them in French!

@@Petitedelight87K Yeah, I loved his accurate portrayal of life at Versailles. You really get the feel of what it was like to live there, and he was so detailed at analyzing people's personalities and motivations. A valuable skill for someone in his position.
Another one I really enjoyed Petite was the book of collected "Letters From Lisalotte." Princess Charlotte was married to Louis XIV's bisexual brother and wrote literally thousands of letters about life at Versailles. She had a lot of power, but she was not very popular and felt an outsider at court. She poured out her feelings in letter after letter, many to her aunt, who was the mother of George I of England. When I read them I felt like I got to know her personally, almost like she was writing them recently, but of course it was many hundreds of years ago.
I'll tell you, both those books I felt immersed in and was sorry to see them end.

I just started reading the book "Madame de Pompadour". It's about the mistress of Louis XV. And boom this pops up.
Man I wish I had money to travel all the time! I just want to visit all historical castles/homes/sites in Europe. So much history. I love America and it’s historical sites, but it’s just not as much and as old as Europe.

It was only Pompadour he didn't have sex with. She didn't really like sex so she instead supplied the king with lots of women. There was a place a house I don't recall the name that had some of the women who were mistresses. They were found for him. The children he had with them or at least with some of them got the last name Aimé. I think Madame Du Barry really loved him and she was a kind person. After his death she would help the people in the village where she lived. She got a new lover and he was killed very brutally and his head thrown into her garden or house. The King got plenty of sex believe me:)

No he didn't. He died from I think you call it the smallpox in English. So when he died he looked awful full of puss all over and he smelled awful too and he was all blackened very sad when you think of it he was a handsome man. Henry the 8th some say died of Syphilis but you know how it is a lot of people a lot of opinions:) I don't think we should envy a lot of these Kings as they had their problems. I remember reading Louis the 14th had this problem in his mouth (I don't know the names in English for deceases I'm afraid) and it had puss in it I think it was like a hole and he as I remembered it stank out of his mouth. It must have been very painful. If you like to read you should read about the death of Axel Von Fersen the so called by some lover of Marie Antoinette. He died in a horrific way. There is a great documentary about him but it is Swedish and this guy tells the story so you feel that you are there watching:) I haven't read any books about Royalty in years as I started genealogy and found my own ancestors were much more interesting because they were MY family and showed the history of the kind of people they didn't write much about through history while others were well known and made me want to know more:)

- Why are the beds so small ?
- Did the Historian said that they didn't have sex ?
-» In those times people used to sleep half seated because the laid position was considered a call for death or "the position of death" , it was also better for digestion even if that was not the cause for the position.
-» YES, they had sex, a lot of it. But in those times, when the King had a lot of false friends around him he normally used mistresses to be ALSO a friend with witch he could share a little of himself like art preferences, music, small talk, etc.
Isn't that an uncomfortable position to sleep?

I imagine the same thing as well. But only if the monarchy treated all of their citizens fairly, not just the aristocracy..it’s so important to remember that the French people were literally starving back then for so long 😢 and the monarchy just didn’t seem concerned about their terrible situation. They were raised to believe they were more important and never thought about the “lower classes”. That’s not fair. I’ve lived good and I’ve lost it all too. I know what it’s like to be in need and lucky in our time we can get help, but back then nobody cared. I totally understand their revolt, it had to happen after being hungry n ignored for so long, they had enough..the brutality went way overboard though 😮

Yeah, with those extravagant luxury stuff and lifestyle, hundreds maids and servants, I thought they were super clean and all.
@@lindahollander3588 It was a different time, different beliefs. And don't fool yourself, hygiene as we know it is rather recent. After the 2nd world war in Europe some family still didn't have running water and they were bathing only once a week. The entire family in the same bucket. (Not together)

Corners of rooms. The smell of the rooms during the “long nights” and don’t forget morning breaths all were common smells of the palace.

I noticed the mistresses' bedrooms were pretty average looking and beds were not as big as I thought they would be but the receiving areas are stunning with all those hanging chandeliers..wow...the king really knew how to show off

Something happened to me when I was in my 20's I went to Paris and my companion was not at all interested in Versailles but we got a taxi and went there. I was allowed exactly 1 hour to look around it was a place to spend hours and hours in as I have always been interested in it. Just as I was dashing back to the taxi I passed a sign pointing to the Petit Trianon - but no time to stop! It was great to see just a little of it but imagine having only one hour and not getting to see much of it😅. Still God willing I might get to go back and be able to spend a lot more time there😊. I love seeing these secret rooms I am surprised that the beds are so small though they are more like chaise longs or day beds. I love the decor in Madame de Pompodour 's apartment so delicate and beautifully tinted like her choice in clothes and decor

All this luxury while the people starved. Many workers died when working in building the palace.
And people are still dying on building sites in the United Emirates, Quatar and many countries in the Middle East. And India isn’t far behind. Very little changes

kay jay people were smaller back then. Also, they weren't "sleeping" in the bed. They were "sleeping" at 90° :)
I know that around this time in England people would sleep sitting up because they feared the devil would sit on their chest, I dont know if it was the same in France. Also the beds with the rolls on the end are day beds Im fairly sure which are for lounging and .... other ... fun activities often the actual bed that was used at night was in a separate room and was very personal, only the resident, lawful parther and servants would enter there.
Lucy Claudia You're right! Not everyone did but this belief was also found in France, yes. Random fact (for people who could be interested) you rarely see anything for bathing, as it was not a common practice: people thought the water would transmit diseases through the pores of the skin, and were not comfortable being naked. Some also thought that because bathing would open your pores, the devil and evil could also get to you through the skin. Movies about this era always depict beautiful and well dressed people when most of them actually had really poor hygiene and wore makeup, powder, wigs and scented pouches to hide it!
Max R that is one thing I love about the movie the Libertine with Johnny depp because they depicted people as they were not as we wish they were.

And I agree, people often have this false vision of medieval times likes it's something wonderful with all the dresses and princesses when actually... Its completely different. It's even said that one of the kings smelled horrible haha!

Did you ever see Versailles during tourist season? Even the Hall of Mirrors is SO packed with people, you cant really see ANYTHING! These small rooms would be overwhelmed! By the way Royal Mistress was a great honor! They were not common whores!
you can see it, just need to book a small group visit it cost 7 euros per person

Blue kid Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe people used to sleep in a sitting position due to their enormous hair. Also, they would be a bit shorter in height than today's average to begin with. So, that's why the bed is rather short.
Black Blossom yes they used to sir. But the 'big hair' part is wrong. They were wigs and hair pieces. They had normal natural hair for bed
Alexfolledemoi I always thought, since all those wigs and hair pieces were such an effort to put on and arrange, they would just sleep in them in a sitting position so they would last several days on their heads
