Imagine growing up in a palace as a kid. It must be amazing playing in all those rooms and secret corridors.
I had dinner an event 2 years ago, next to the Count of the Palace where the series "Versailles" was filmed. He had grown up there, and we went through a few of the rooms that are supposed to be the Palace in the show (but I recognized it as familiar right away). At dinner I kept saying the same thing! He just recalls growing up and running through the rooms... and now he just works hard trying to sell the place for functions (quite a few famous ppl have married there). At the end of the day, we all need to work!
That Palace is surely beautiful but people in that palace were straight out of the hell.

My Family owns a few of those, and it was amazing as a kind to running around and play hide and seek with other siblings and cousins.

LeAnn , me as well. Ahhhh, I and most persons have a better chance at becoming a celebrity. So many variables to overcome! Soooo much money and school and related travel expenses. Until someone finds you worthy to spend thier money on. But, we can dream...and watch documentaries.

I don't think she was down playing sex took place with the mistresses , I think she was only trying to point out that there were very deep intimate and intellectual cultural ties between the King and his mistresses that sex was not all that was important. People must remember royals did not marry for love...majority of people did not marry for love. So in a mistress or a love....that is where you would be yourself and find the friend and the similar interest. Not advocating the practice only trying to clarify what she may have meant

There is a room at the Getty Villa in California, Los Angeles which you can visit!
Madame de Pompadour and Louis XVs relationship was sexual to begin with. But later on I became more of a close friendship. It is said that you can't really trust anyone at court, so that is why Louis XV clung to Pompadour, because she was someone he could trust. The Petit Trianon in the grounds of Versailles was Created for Madame de Pompadour, but she died too early and never saw it completed. Madame du Barry was said to be stupid and uneducated, but she was possibly the most beautiful mistress Louis XV had.
The sexual relationship between Pompadour and Louis lasted, according to historians, almost 5 years. But the Marquise herself would point out how frigid she was, so they stayed very close friends for over 20 years, and she managed to keep the title of maîtresse-en-titre.
On Madame du Barry, she was actually quite clever. Of course her level of culture wasn’t exactly a match for the nobles who were born surronded by teachers and books, but she did have some wit. Coming from street prostitution, she was educated by a mistress of her mother’s lover.
And although she didn’t have infinite culture, she did have a good taste - very different from Marie Antoniette’s, but still good - and was very kind and charitable.

Interesting that both Official Mistresses were common born & Louis XV had to give them titles so they could appear at Court. Both were Much better Educated & Cultured than titled jealous Versailles woman who wanted to be the King’s Official Mistress. Yes, all writers and observers at the time Agree that Madame DuBarry was the most Beautiful Woman in 18th century France according to observers & writers (including her friend Voltaire) *Plus she was know for her Kindness to all, and after she was made Official Mistress- the First thing she did was throw herself to LouisXV’s feet unless he commuted (which he never could be talked into) the death penalty of 2 elderly people

Well these rooms are not even open to the public. there's a lot of rooms and halls that are not accessible in versailles hence most spend their time at the massive garden looking for the queen's hamlet

That courtyard clock made me a bit sad. I could imagine it chiming to an empty building the day after the revolution when the palace lay silent for the first time in over 150 years.

I read somewhere that at certain time periods it was common to sleep propped up because they thought lying down was a bit like "imitating death"

When heirs to the throne married, the alliances were political and rarely took into consideration the feelings of the parties involved. "Love" in royal marriages is a recent invention (and, given the messes of the BRF, RARELY works out). Mistresses, on the other hand, were friends, confidants, comforters and bedmates. Maitresse-en-titre was an officially recognized position.
Why on earth aren't we allowed to visit this? It's far more interesting than some of the rooms that ARE on display.
There are tours to these rooms. They don’t happen very often and are a little bit more expensive than the regular ticket, but it is definitely worth it! The groups have usually no more then 10 people.
These appartements are EXTREMELY small if you consider the amount of tourists and visitors Versailles receives everyday, so it’s comprehensible that they’re not open to the big public.
There are tons of rooms which aren't furnished either. All of the furniture was auctioned off during the French revolution and since then the government has tried to get it back or to recreate it as it would have been. For this there is a ton historical research to make it as close as possible, there's a documentary here on TH-cam about restorers that use the same manufacturing techniques as those from the 18th century. The process is very time consuming.
English tours were discontinued for lack of interest, but they do offer them in French!
It 100 percent would not be as interesting if you didnt have a guide...and most people do not. It would just be a series of small lightly decorated rooms as ooposed to the grand rooms of the king and queen, the grand trianon etc...

Man I wish I had money to travel all the time! I just want to visit all historical castles/homes/sites in Europe. So much history. I love America and it’s historical sites, but it’s just not as much and as old as Europe.
What a palace, this place is HUGE and stunning.

Read the memoirs of the Duc de Saint Simon, who was elevated to his dukedom during during the latter part of Louis XIV's reign and was among the prominent courtiers at Versailles for many years. I am in the process of reading the memoirs right now during this lockdown, as transcribed in 3 books by Lucy Norton. You can actually feel exactly what it was like from day to day. Saint Simon is an excellent writer and it's an incredibly detailed memory of life at Versailles with all of it's triumphs, tragedies, love, death and personal human conflict. Absolutely fascinating, if you want to know what it was truly like from the inside.
I will add it to my reading list.
@@Petitedelight87K Yeah, I loved his accurate portrayal of life at Versailles. You really get the feel of what it was like to live there, and he was so detailed at analyzing people's personalities and motivations. A valuable skill for someone in his position.
Another one I really enjoyed Petite was the book of collected "Letters From Lisalotte." Princess Charlotte was married to Louis XIV's bisexual brother and wrote literally thousands of letters about life at Versailles. She had a lot of power, but she was not very popular and felt an outsider at court. She poured out her feelings in letter after letter, many to her aunt, who was the mother of George I of England. When I read them I felt like I got to know her personally, almost like she was writing them recently, but of course it was many hundreds of years ago.
I'll tell you, both those books I felt immersed in and was sorry to see them end.

those 2 have great chemistry! I love the push and pull of their accents. It was refreshing! (floorplan would be a nice touch).
I still can't get out of my mind what I've watched in another documentary about the palace's filth and the unsanitary habits of the people who lived there. 🙈

Yeah, with those extravagant luxury stuff and lifestyle, hundreds maids and servants, I thought they were super clean and all.
@@lindahollander3588 It was a different time, different beliefs. And don't fool yourself, hygiene as we know it is rather recent. After the 2nd world war in Europe some family still didn't have running water and they were bathing only once a week. The entire family in the same bucket. (Not together)

Marriages at that time were political and Louie married the daughter of the King of Spain.. They had affection, for each other she bore him children but it was business.I think the mistresses were women that he himself picked based on attractiveness and things they had in common..The thing that is crazy is that France was a Catholic country at the time and they all were breaking one of the 10 commandments!
Madame Du Barry was sent away for instance because the bishop could not hear the king’s confession and absolve him before dying. It doesn’t mean it was “ok” he has to follow the rules technically like everyone else.
Louis XV actually married Marie Lecszynska, daughter of the former King of Poland (later Duke of Lorraine) not the daughter of the King of Spain.

I just started reading the book "Madame de Pompadour". It's about the mistress of Louis XV. And boom this pops up.
I noticed the mistresses' bedrooms were pretty average looking and beds were not as big as I thought they would be but the receiving areas are stunning with all those hanging chandeliers..wow...the king really knew how to show off
I just learnt that back then many would sleep in sitting because "only the dead lie down"
Considering plum and chubby were the ideal beauty during the said time why the heck is that bed so small ?????

People need to learn that there's a lot of body shapes between "rail thin" and "modern American overweight". Look at paintings of the Good Madam de Pompadour, she wasn't overweight, otherwise those corsets would have been impossible.

At the time people slept sitting up, because laying down was the position of death, and it was believed if you slept laying down you would die in your sleep, Even the king's bed, though it was wide all beds were quite short

- Why are the beds so small ?
- Did the Historian said that they didn't have sex ?
-» In those times people used to sleep half seated because the laid position was considered a call for death or "the position of death" , it was also better for digestion even if that was not the cause for the position.
-» YES, they had sex, a lot of it. But in those times, when the King had a lot of false friends around him he normally used mistresses to be ALSO a friend with witch he could share a little of himself like art preferences, music, small talk, etc.

It was only Pompadour he didn't have sex with. She didn't really like sex so she instead supplied the king with lots of women. There was a place a house I don't recall the name that had some of the women who were mistresses. They were found for him. The children he had with them or at least with some of them got the last name Aimé. I think Madame Du Barry really loved him and she was a kind person. After his death she would help the people in the village where she lived. She got a new lover and he was killed very brutally and his head thrown into her garden or house. The King got plenty of sex believe me:)

No he didn't. He died from I think you call it the smallpox in English. So when he died he looked awful full of puss all over and he smelled awful too and he was all blackened very sad when you think of it he was a handsome man. Henry the 8th some say died of Syphilis but you know how it is a lot of people a lot of opinions:) I don't think we should envy a lot of these Kings as they had their problems. I remember reading Louis the 14th had this problem in his mouth (I don't know the names in English for deceases I'm afraid) and it had puss in it I think it was like a hole and he as I remembered it stank out of his mouth. It must have been very painful. If you like to read you should read about the death of Axel Von Fersen the so called by some lover of Marie Antoinette. He died in a horrific way. There is a great documentary about him but it is Swedish and this guy tells the story so you feel that you are there watching:) I haven't read any books about Royalty in years as I started genealogy and found my own ancestors were much more interesting because they were MY family and showed the history of the kind of people they didn't write much about through history while others were well known and made me want to know more:)

On Catherine the Great (Russian Tv Series) season 1. Empress Elisabeth tell her entourage to send important letter to Madame de Pompadour. Madam de Pompadour then give it to Louis XV. Madame de Pompadour was a smart lady.
