The Cultural Revolution in a Zoot Suit

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ก.ย. 2024
  • José de la Rosa, aka Pachuco Nereidas, is a third generation pachuco. Pachuco is a term used to describe members of a subculture best known for wearing flamboyant and colorful zoot suits. With matching fedoras and shoes, pachucos are hard to miss-especially if they’re on the dance floor. When jazz, swing or Latin rhythms start to play, nothing can stop a pachuco from showing off their master moves. But below the bombastic surface, the culture was born as a result of the discrimination that Mexican-Americans faced in the 1930s. Serving as a reminder of the hardships his fellow pachucos suffered, de la Rosa is committed to honoring the past- all while looking extremely suave.

My abuelito use to be a zoot suiter back in his days whenever he hung out with the boys. He came to America for some work around the 30's or 40's before he met my grandma in Mexico. I've seen pictures of him, and coming from me he looked like a real G unlike today...

Common mistake is to assume that the Pachucos and the Zoot Suit started in Los Angeles. History says that the original name for the Pachucos was Tirili or Tirilon who originated in El Paso Texas a.k.a El Chuco or Chuco Town. The Tirilis and the Pachucos pre-date the Zoot suit by a long shot. During the Bracero program in the 40's and 50's Tirili men in Zoot suits would ride the train back to El Paso, when asked where you vatos going they responded "Pues Pa Chuco" hence the term Pachuco.

I remember thinking these things looked cool when I was a kid. It's crazy how dumb you are when you're a kid, well I was at least. Now as an adult I respect the fact that they try hard to achieve a certain look, and pull it off, where I couldn't articulate why it was cool when I was a kid. It's full circle this growing up thing, no?

The Reason El Paso Is Known As El Chuco Isn't Exactly Because Of The Pachuco. El Chuco Came From The Phrase "Pa' El Shoe Co." A Shoe Company In El Paso. A Lot Of People From Juárez Would Cross Into El Paso & Work At This Shoe Co. El Shoe Co./El Chuco.

You'd never see a modern Italian wearing something like this. They admire well proportioned suits, not something baggy, which does nothing to compliment the lines of a human body. The zoot suit is actually an African-American invention, not originated by pachucos. It is Mannerist by way of its exaggerated lines.
