Thanks for putting that heads up on the service manual approach in the description. I might give that a try. But you’re right, I haven’t seen any other videos where someone does it that way. Thanks for posting your vid!

There's another comment on this video where someone recommends disconnecting the exhaust down pipe from the exhaust manifold. Having also replaced my TJ's exhaust manifold and exhaust system, I'm positive that disconnecting the pipe from the manifold would also give you the clearance you need. But those two nuts holding the pipe to the manifold are most certainly rusted in place and might be hard to get loose - PB Blaster or Kroil (recommended below) might help with that - but I'd have a couple of spare nuts and bolts handy in case you strip/break them.
Either way, good luck with the project and thanks for watching.

Appreciate the heads up. I’ll probably go that route first. Seems easier than messing with unmounting the engine then raising it.

This is probably the most impressive TH-cam video I’ve ever seen. I hope you get more subscribers!

Thanks so much! It’s fun to share the learning moments so hopefully others don’t have to learn it all the hard way. I’m glad you liked the video. Please consider subscribing if you haven’t already (I can’t tell).

Yep need to drop the exhaust . Use Kroil penetrant on the exhaust fastners the day before. Makes things so much easier

Now that I've replaced the entire exhaust myself, I'm much less scared of the idea and would definitely drop the downpipe from the exhaust manifold (2 nuts - just have to be careful, as you mentioned) if I ever needed to do this again.

it looks like you have the 'real' service manual for 2.5L - mine is focusing mainly on 2.5L&4.0L, only sometimes the 2.5L mentioned...

A link to the service manual and parts list I use is in the video description of my exhaust manifold video.

How's the gasket holding up? I need to replace mine and I'm dreading the idea of dropping the exhaust.

It's been holding up great - no leaks at all. Thanks for asking and thanks for watching.
And after having now fully replaced my exhaust, I don't blame you for dreading it - I'd be worried about the nuts/bolts on the exhaust manifold snapping.
One thing the service manual suggests is jacking the engine up (block of wood under the front under the harmonic balancer) and maybe you can get enough room to get the pan out. Good luck!
