It's been over half a decade since we last saw over ear headphones from Beats. With a long overdue update finally arriving, can Beats regain their foothold in such a competitive market?

0:44 The old ones are... old
1:23 Thankfully, these new ones have a lot of upgrades!
2:20 But how good do they sound - and cancel sound?
3:13 They also upgraded the mic, and it has USB-C!

Studio Buds, hopefully gonna be these soon
Currently have a pair of studio 3’s and had solo 3’s before that, if I need to replace my studio 3’s, I’ll definitely consider the studio pros as AirPods Max are $900 here in Australia, whereas these are almost $400 cheaper and are better than AirPods Max in some ways
Beats Solo 2 which are hooked up to my ps5 controller for quiet gaming.
Beats Studio for around the house and such.
Got both 2nd hand but new so absolute no brainer.
Edgelords will tell you beats suck, but for 99.9% of people they would find them totally great. It’s the vocal 0.1% who make it their mission to tell you that you are wrong for doing something
I like the format of this vid being a conversation/comparison between 2 POVs . You should make more of this . POVs between multiple users is very helpful, especially when there's equal number of pessismists and optimists. Not just overhyped hot air.
Absolutely loved that you guys basically shot this whole video outside! Felt like I was breathing the fresh air with you guys
Shoot I didn’t realize how much I liked that as well until I saw your comment.
we need to touch some grass bro lol
@@LaidbackPotatoit's too fkn hot
@@LaidbackPotato lol my life is extreme flip flopping between indoors and outdoors. I live to be outdoors now, but I work 12 hour shifts at a desk. When I’m not working, I’m definitely outside with my son, my fiancé and/or her two dogs. We do lots of swimming, walking, biking, even in the heat. It’s been between 103-108 most of the last two weeks where I live and I still like being out there with water and some sunscreen. I just love being outside.
How about going out for actual fresh air
Is it bad if I sorta enjoy these videos more than LTT nowadays? These are just so well put together, perfect marriage of information, review, and entertainment, while staying efficient and not dragging on. Just my two cents. Keep it up
Edit for clarification: I still watch LTT videos all the time, almost every day, and they are super helpful and funny… but I’m just enjoying this fresh new style from MA.
Considering that LTT has to consistently push content, and has to really dig for some topics when there is not much happening within the industry, I honestly don’t blame you for the sentiment. Most of their videos these days are just so random, whereas Mac Address, whilst occasionally doing more essay style content, seems to always have a new angle to explore because Apple offered a nice variety of content. Moreover, the viewpoint of what I would call an Apple enthusiast offers a unique perspective to those who aren’t all in with the Apple ecosystem. And the inclusion of non-Apple perspectives from co-hosts/subjects further helps flesh out the videos.
In comparison, LTT is more or less an info dump, or hosts goofing off, which isn’t always appealing. Not to mention LTT videos have a lot more resources when it comes to a lot of tests, so it can often feel a bit more luxury in comparison to what some of its viewers can do.
I think the other part is just "the format". LTT has always been "quick news, done humorously" and when they did the upgrade to 4K and 8K and 12K you never really noticed it (although it did really help the editors with making it easier to track and record things) but here it's been "Professional" shot since the first video and they went out of their way for that look, so as they improve their workflow (by increasing the team, leaning on LABS, etc) it just improves the professional look.
I think the host and the research behind this channel is what's made it the best of the LMG channels for me. LTT is still great though. Can't stand watching the ShortCircuit channel though. Especially that fat guy with the glasses that doesn't bother at least googling what he's unboxing.
imo the LTT main channel is too screamy and and sometimes exhausting to watch. This channel is much more chill and slow-paced which is very nice
Jonathan Horst has a background of TV production for public services I think, so it makes sense that his style would be similar to what you'd find on a TV channel rather than TH-cam.
We live in an age where Beats headphones have a more natural sounding profile than Sony headphones. Surreal.
Yeah I wasn't expecting that at all, suddenly Beats becomes more than "that headphone brand Apple bought"
Sony has very easy EQ adjustment in their app.
Sony has very easy EQ adjustment in their app.
Neither were or are natural sounding. But getting closer to a more subjective pleasing target curve.
The Sony's need their EQ adjusted a bit, once adjusted they sound better than even the Airpods Max
Mac address owning with facts, gravity, writing, production value, and editing quality. Keep it up, Jonathan and team. P.S. I also despise touch controls. It's like no-one ever tested them for just how sh*t they are.
Having used XM3 and now XM5, I'd say touch controls are much better and natural. Mostly because I don't have to hear that annoying click while listening.
@@GehlotKunalsame. I really like the touch controls on my XM4s. Idk about earbuds though.
I also generally hate touch controls, wont trade in my samsung watch for the newer ones because of the new touch bezel. I usually just can't rely on touches to register and end up annoyed with I try to for example double tap an ear bud only for it to register a single tap and do something i'm not expecting
@@jayaskme2942 Never had that problem with the sony(s) though. They have really good touch pads? surface? on the side.
The only pair of headphones I’ve had good luck with touch controls have been on my Sony xm4 and xm5, I’m a truck driver so quick touch controls are massively important to me.
Nice conversational format. Playful, casual, and informative, looking forward to how you fellas continue to refine and build chemistry. An excellent tag team on the topic, and over the ear all the way here. I ended up picking up Air Pods Max a few months ago on sale, and while I wondered if I’d end up with buyer’s remorse, I LOVE them.
I bought mine when they first came out despite having Sony XM-3 that were less than a year old, and I also don’t regret it at all. These are so close to the audio quality of my old wired Sennheiser HD280 Pro studio headphones (and honestly seem possibly slightly better? but it’s hard to tell for sure) that I’ve never looked back.
One thing that I’ll point out though, in case it ever happens to you, is that over time, the hinges can get gunked up and cause issues with the Maxes where they’ll just disconnect and reconnect randomly constantly. If that happens, pop off the cushions and at the top of each earpiece there’s a tiny hole - rotate the headphones flat and stick a paperclip into that hole to press the release mechanism and slide the earpiece off of the headband, then, with a very clean and dry tissue, wipe the metal end clean on each side of the headband, and then just click the earpieces back on to the correct side and you’ll get your headphones back without constantly disconnecting. It’s extremely easy to do, and you only need to do it once if you start having that problem. I imagine mine will be good for at least another year or two without needing to do that again.
@@babybirdhome thanks for the tip! Keeping it in my back pocket for when the rainy day comes!
I like the back-and-forth here! Especially the recurring gag of taking the headphones off of each others' heads 😂
Great video!! Love the outside vibes, and also how clear and detailed everything still was! 🔥
Loved the dynamic between the two hosts! Keep it up
Agreed. They have excellent chemistry
Happy to see more overear options from Beats, I'm personally squirmish about putting earbuds or anything into my ears so having more overear options is fantastic.
Great video. Especially with Steven and Jonathan on screen explaining!
Steven mumbles a lot, it’s hard to understand him at points, such as when he talks about the “artists intent”. Had to rewind twice to understand him.
After seeing the 2 in the apple one video, I was yearning for more of the two. So glad to see it again and it does not disappoint. I’m not much of an earphones type of guy. I still use the free air buds I got from a tour bus but I love watching people talk about tech
Still not worth 350 dollars. Especially when the Sony XM4's are around 250 or less and still better in almost every way.
agreed.. but if you can get these below $200 then its fair.
@@jexxy1806got em for 131 lol worth it for that price
Absolutely love the frequency response graphs and please don’t ever stop using them
I love how LMG has the breadth and capability to allow for the experimentation with formats like this. Mac Address is quickly becoming my favorite Apple channel, helmed by the excellent vibe that Jonathan has cultivated.
I like the different vibe of being outside. Also I'm glad beats updated their head phones to USB C I might get them for the next upgrade
these videos have gotten phenomenal. So easy and refreshing to watch. Love the outdoor content!
Definitely liking these videos more, even if I'm personally not an Apple user. I might be enjoying them more than normal LTT videos now. The conversational format is just so pleasing and having videos shot outdoors also makes this very ASMR-like.
Now to weigh in to overear vs earbuds, why not just have both? I have a few pair of wireless earbuds, wired IEMs and wireless headphones that I will swap and change between depending on the songs I listen to and the weather. Earbuds and IEMs are definitely better for the hot, tropical weather where I am, whereas overears like my Sony WH1000XM3 are great for getting lost in music when I'm alone in my air-conditioned room.
That said, lately I realize I've been using my wired IEMs more because I find my wireless earbuds(Xiaomi Buds 3 Pro) just don't get loud enough, so I will be in that small camp that buys phones exclusively with 3.5mm headphone jacks.
Great Video, loved the outside vibe.
I'm an earbuds person when I'm Out and about, Over Ear when On Train, or working at the desk.
Currently Beats Flex and Sennheiser BT4.50BTNC. I'll be considering the Beats Studio Pro's and the Beats Buds+ which you reviewed last month, for my next headphones purchase.
Dude! I LOVE this review format, first time i've i seen this "screenplay"-esc style product review, it works EXTREMELY well.. Bravo guys! Well done!
Amazing, so much info jam packed in a beautifully and smartly produced video. Had to watch it twice
I like how Mac Address is basically reviewing Apple products while also not so subtly taking us all around Metro Vancouver. Seeing lots of cool places I’ve been like SFU, and now Fort Langley. Loving it so far :)
I don't mind smart features so much. They're nice to have but I care about comfort and sound a lot more. The Beats headset not slipping from your head it's a plus for me. I'm rather small and headset often slip and fall. That they're foldable is also a huge plus. I have Sennheiser right now, and my only issue with it is the space they take.
Love my Studio 3s, totally considering picking these up!
I'm not an apple user so don't know how well they work with iPhone, but I use over the ear Marshall Monitor 2 ANC. They're really solid built, have 2 clicky buttons and a control stick, and can fold up super tiny. They sound really great to me too and you can do your own custom EQ on them to tune to taste
This review was definitely refreshing, definitely loved the back n foward between you two.
I was really surprised when these released. I was not expecting them at all
I love this style of review! Way better than the Short Circuit format or even the LTT format
It’s more conversational and not just 10+ minutes of unboxing and specs
Beats Studio Pro are like $180 right now. Insane. 😅😅😅
That was a month. Black Friday on Amazon is like $169 🤣
I feel bad for anyone who bought them at $350. They make a lot more sense to buy around $175. At 350 you might as well get the Sonys
@@OscarUnrated they are NOT worth even close to $350...
I love how much Mac Address has grown! Great video!😊
I like the choice of scenery for shooting this video. Much nicer than the typical studio or car parks most other content creators choose.
Love the outdoor setting, I want to see more of the PNW
i really do like over the ear headphones. for everything they do, comfort and sound quality wise I really do enjoy them. i USED to hate in ears as a sensory issue, but while using the pixel bud pro's I have discovered I don't mind them as much. as I got these pixel buds for free, it's been a easy choice to throw them in my bag or pocket everywhere i go. i am unsure on whether i would of bought a pair of inears though? especially as i don't have any wireless overears to take out with me. i quite enjoyed this video!
Great video I love my beats studio 3 headphones and have thought of upgrading for the transparency mode but I just can’t make a decision.
Delightful, delightful video. Really liked to see more outside world testing, which is where these kinds of headphones shine the most.
I don't own any apple products but I still really enjoy Mac address videos. Something about them all is just calm and charming. Keep it up!
Nice review. The new Beats seem very good. I like that they’re more neutral. I love spatial audio so the Sony headphones aren’t an option. Which is a shame because I really like Sony. Looks like it’s time for my first Beats
I’ve had the XM4’s for almost a year now. Just awesome 😎 Couldn’t ask for more.
Love earbuds for like 70% of the time but they can get uncomfortable after a while and it’s nice to change up the signature and pressure points on your head with a different form factor every once in a while
If the audio graph comparison is new, I am loving it more than the previous one!
I love the format, but the quality of the review itself is also great! I like the points you’ve mentioned.
Thanks!
"beats popularized the idea of over the ear headphones"
Uhm, excuse me?
They literally did hello? 💀 clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. ..
Love this format with two host, Awesome job
I have a pair of SoundCore Life Q35s. I know, not the BEST headphones to some people, but man they are comfy as heck and sound great.
Comfort is a huge factor to consider with headphones. If they're comfortable and they are good enough sound quality for your use, then that's a good set of cans!
I've been using my V-Moba's for almost a decade now due to them being the only blutooth over ears that are water restent so I don't have to worry about that getting rained on... Other wise they are really nice haveing the last tech of the time, Fun gold and black look, sound really good and have physical controls and a headphone jack.
Theres something about being able to get two well-informed opinions & perspectives on these products that makes these uploads feel particularly more sincere and useful. I think I speak for most when I say to keep the high quality videos coming
Been using in-ears for years and have spent a pretty penny on them. I'm using Moondrop Variations at the moment and the sound is sublime. It's a sound I haven't been able to get from the over-ears I've tried.
Love this format, and would like to see more in the future! Good job Mac Address team!
Steven is a great addition, one sided reviews only go so far so I love that you guys can contrast for us
I love the feel of that "pc vs mac" guy bits you get with the dual hosting in this video. pleae more
Fairly good production. It’s fun to watch the improvements! I’m in so much of the apple ecosystem, but after owning two pairs of beats over the years I’m still a Sony guy. They kind of destroyed key functionality with the XM5s, so here I sit my XM3s still going strong.
Me too. I’ve had the same Sony 3.5mm headphones for about 15 years and they still sound awesome. I have some Sony Bluetooth headphones I’ve had about 5 or 6 years with no complaints.
Double Up! Rocking my xm3 most of the day everyday, and they are just perfect. No thought whatsoever about upgrading/changing. XM4, though, up next. When the 3's eventually die in a couple of years.
Awesome job co-hosting this. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I think I was just used to the previous flow. By the end I really appreciated how well the Mac addresses format was adapted to have Steven as a co-host. It totally works! ❤
Finally! I've been wanting a Solo Pro version of the Studios for years! The Solo Pro's are my favorite headphones to date. Yes, my Airpods Pro 2 sound better, but I've been misisng over ear headphones a lot and the Solo Pro's only kinda scratched that itch.
Love your videos
I love how conversational this video is!
Is the mic usable while using the cable? Was there a difference in quality between usb-c vs aux playback? Does the aux port allow you to use an external dac, or does it force you to use the dac in the headphones?
Been using my Sennheiser HD558s for almost 10 years now for desktop use at home and airpods or whatever I have at the time for mobile/laptop use. While I like open-back over/on the ear headphones for the sound stage, I really do prefer closed-back headphones for office work. I don't think I'd ever pick up beats again though after my first 300 dollar pair snapped in half after 3 months. Sticking with Audio Technica or KRK
Great to see the graphs from LTT Labs.
The "In our tests" seems more professional now compared to other youtubers.
I currently own a pair of red Beats Solo 2s. I haven’t used them in years, and just recently started using them again, but I grew out of the On Ear feel of them. I’m wanting a pair of Studio pros, but with red being my favorite color, I’d like to have a red pair, but they haven’t made one yet as far as I know.
Until I saw frequency curve, I couldn't tell this video to be from LMG.
Great Work MA team.
Great video, guys!
Love the interaction and comparisons between Steven and Jonathan... :)
Here in Hong Kong the weather is so hot and humid throughout almost the whole year. We never use over-the-ear headphones outdoor!
As nice as wireless headphones are, I've swallowed the Dankpods pill on them after having to warranty my AirPods Pro set. I've got some AKG's here that I've had for longer than the Airpods and they've never failed me. ANC and so on no longer feels as good as it was (especially with my backup buds that are just some cheap wired things).
Did love the outdoor setting of the video (also love to see some Canadian railway stuff too!)
I would have liked to see the Bose QC45 included in your comparisons.
Seconded. The QC45 are often overlooked but the overall package is great. And the SE version (doesn't have a hardcase, just a pouch), can be really cheap.
they creek, you can hear it when Johnathan and the new guy talk, they're built like the old version - cheap and ripping off the buyer
i use a crappy corsair wireless headset for most of my gaming, but my real go-to is a set of 1976 pioneer SE-505 quad speaker headphones on a big DAC. they have a fantastic flat sound stage, because these were designed originally for audio editing and recording, and you needed the most accurate representation of the production. mine were scored at a garage sale for way too little money, and were incredibly well preserved. the bass is shockingly deep and hard hitting, the highs are sharp and crisp, the cups are massive poofy soft rings that you can easily pop off to clean, the strap is spring steel and is wrapped in leather. the only drawback is they weigh almost 2 pounds! good thing im used to wearing things like welding helmets!
Finally! The Beats Studio Pro review I've been waiting for.
I've been waiting for Beats over-the-ear headphones with USB Type-C!
Damn... what an aggressively pleasant video, I had a great time watching. Thanks!
I bought my Sony XM5 last year and have been really enjoying them. The multi device connection feature means I can be connected to my work pc and phone for more flexibility. The feature isn’t perfect but my issues have been few and far between
really like this style of video fun to watch super informative !
I got my XM4’s used from the official Sony refurb ebay shop and they were the greatest value headphones I’ve ever gotten. (They go under a different name)
Whats their name
I want to know it too :)
Can you link them?
Yeah, eBay refurbished is a steal. I got my WF xm5 (in ear) for like $120 with a 2 year warranty and Skull candy Crusher ANC 2s for $100 with a 2 year. I think I got my XM4s (around ear) from Amazon used crazy cheap a few years ago. Just picked up these beats pro for $146.
Mac Address Videos feel fresh and new :) like the duo host style.
Did you guys review the AirPods Max? I can't seem to find the video for it.
As someone who basically bike commutes everywhere, the Sony XM4's are where it's at. The automatic ANC in the XM5's is horrible for wind and traffic, while the 'wind reduction'-mode of the XM4 is absolutely amazing. I still hear things happening around me, but the wind noise is so much less. This is probably a very Dutch issue, though.
Since I bike with a helmet I have to use wireless earbuds
I am so glad I ordered mine, lol i have the airpod max as well, but getting these for style purposes 😅
Very enjoyable video format
i still use my Bose QCII, they work well in any noise cancelling environtment, they can fold, they have really nice earpads, the clamping force is quite low, but they are really light. they do lack the apple features (just like the sonys), but i think i always prefer the bose over the beats
The XM5's have a pretty nice equalizer and there is an app that sets it up according to your taste.
I don't even use Apple products, but I love the presentation style of MA so much that I've seen 95% of the videos on the channel
Currently using Airpod Max although I wish I had an actual case
That green screen tech is getting wild. I really believed you were outside!
My beats studio 3 is great. May not be the best sound but it can be awesome depending on the music you listen to. Im just gonna save up for the xm4
What song was he listening to in the starting of the video?
My favorite feature with the Sony Headphones is the in app EQ. That’s a game changer for me
I really like the diagram’s in this video. Keep up with that!
Been using Beats Studio since the 1,0 back in the day. Switched to the second one when it released, and then the 3rd. But the build quality always came with issues (cracks in the plastic after about 6 months) so I saved up and bought the AirPods Max about a year ago instead... Best switch ever. I feel I need to add that I use my headphones 3-5h a day so Its nothing crazy but apparently it was too often for the Beats... 🤣✌
Top content, guys!
Oh, are we gonna get multiple hosts on Mac Address now? Very cool.
7:02 i have these bose headphones and i love them to DEATH they are comfortable and perfect
The outside filming is super comfy.
Unless I'm reading the frequency chart incorrectly, these aren't "more neutral" than the Sony's, in fact they appear to be more V shaped which is effectively the opposite of neutral. I can't say if they sound good or not, but it's not really correct to describe these as neutral
Can you use ANC and Transparency mode in 3.5 jack connection?
Ooou, now im debating the Beats Pros, Sonys XM5 or Boses 700?
i like the fashion element of over the ears headphones, but i recognize that the more subtle look of the earbuds is more my style.
The Powerbeats pro are my favorite earbuds ever and I need a refresh with noise cancellation
dude I love these videos ❤
Over ears and in ears all day, but I'm not a wireless guy. Miss my 3.5mm jack on all my phones. Saving for a pair of TMA-2s and always on the look out for another pair of iems.
Amazing video!
