@@Amcacs5654 yes. Dislocated and broken. The tendons ripped off a piece of the bone where the tendons attach. It's supposedly quite a long recovery but fortunately I don't need surgery.
@@hardtailparty dude that sucks! I tore my volar plate back in 2012. It was around 2 years before I was good again. It's imperative that you listen to your doc and physiologist regarding rehab and your current work/riding regime. I had a job where I was using my hands extensively and I had to quit riding for a year because I wasn't healing.
@@hardtailparty yikes! Maybe better than if the tendons snapped. They would require surgery to attach. Best healing wishes!

That bike looks fantastic and I love your specific comments about how it rides like a hardtail from yesteryear but with modern geometry. I grew up on hardtails like the Kona Explosif and Litespeed Obed. I want to put a hardtail together this winter and the Sherpa will be on the short list. I will have to wait for the Ti Sherpa review to hear your thoughts on it. As usual Steve, your description of how the bike rides is so detailed. I'm 52, started riding MTBs in the 80s when "fat tires" were 26 x 1.75, bars were flat and narrow, shifters were on top of the bar and suspension was unheard of. Brands like Fat City Cycles, Ibis, Breezer, were what all the cool kids wanted. I'm more into touring these days on my beloved Surly LHT but if I ever wanted a trail bike again, a steel hardtail would be for me.

In 30 yrs of mtn biking, I have fractured my hand once and just recently broke my pinky finger because of a rock overhang and my 780mm wide bars.
"This bike makes me happy." 'Nuf said! Since I'm not racing, that's the bike feature I'm looking for. Funny thing, I'm always pleased when I see Cody is on the ride. Awesome skills, awesome friend. Saw him on the Dusty Betty AZT ride video. Just a good dude and you two really demonstrate the riding experience I enjoy so much. Thanks for the ride.

That happened to my pinky while playing football as a kid. Now it will pop out easily if you're not careful. You will also feel it during cold weather. Welcome to the club!
You again were spot on with this review just like the Sirius. I finally got the frame after a 5 month wait. The maiden voyage was a 30 miles XC Epic ride. Not a sore joint, back, wrist, nothing. Definitely an all day bike, you can attack the flow or just spin and talk to your riding partners. Great frame, exceeded all my expectations. Thanks.

It looks like the geo is very similar to my RSD Mayor V5 (with the chainstays slammed forward). The Sherpa's a little more modern, but the Mayor is a fat bike so tire clearance limits what can be done with the geo. I've been really enjoying the "almost aggressive but not quite" feel, I think it makes for a much better all-rounder.

I’ve been riding all my life but never owned a real mountain bike. My time has usually been relegated to road and gravel. I find myself trying to climb and go down steep dirt pitches and hop of ledges and stairs on my rigid hybrid. Your channel has had me seriously considering a hardtail. I like aluminum and steel frames. My friend got an old school carbon bike from 15 years ago and When I rode it I finally understood what a stiff and efficient frame was. I’ve watched enough of your vid to now understand geo better. I may hit you up in the future when the time comes when I can actually drop to money on a bike. Currently I am just a broke college student and I haven’t had a bike worth more than 1000 bucks. One day.
Prescott has so much fun riding - it's become one of our favorite new destinations that hasn't gotten totally over-hyped.

Remember when you were "indestructible" as a kid and caution would go out the window, and something getting scraped or broken was just part of the fun? Bruises and scabs gave you something to brag about. As long as you weren't dying you were having fun. That bike seems to have brought you back to that. How awesome is a bike that you can snap a finger and the only thing you're thinking about is getting back up to ride some more? It might be your first broken bone mountain biking, but that was a 10 year old Steve just pulling it back straight, laughing while doing it. Beautiful bike, and half time machine.

This type of terrain is probably my favorite type: rock slabs and big boulders like this create an almost endless variety of features to test your skills on. It's like an MTB/trials playground. :) Also: "I broke my finger." **snap** "Straight now!" Ouchie!
What a fantastic place to ride! Great review Steve. This is the 17" and what length stem were you using? What's the max fork travel? Really looking forward to the Ti review and comparisons. Hope the finger is all healed up already since these videos are on delay.
Stanton suggests max. 100-130 mm fork travel. I am about to build one with 130 mm. I have almost al components, but not the frame yet (hopefully arrives next week…it is ready to be shipped).
Aaagh. Broke/dislocated my little finger a few years ago. Ow. Just bought a 1 st. Generation Stanton Sherpa on eBay. Can’t wait to build it. So fed up of my Carbon,internally cable routed Felt...light but no feeling! Have not ridden steel since 1990’s. Plus have ‘Hope’ Brakes,Hubs,BB,Headset,Seatclamp. Enjoy your content.
Man, I love the channel! I really want to hear your thoughts on the Chromag Rootdown and Stylus. I know they don’t send stuff very often, but here’s to hoping.
They don't send stuff ever, sadly. I like the rootdown a lot. Chrinags are typically overbuilt and fairly stiff.
Ouch! Hardcore riding comes with a hardcore price sometimes! Seems like a nice bike! I would be looking at a Stanton if I didn't already have a steel Hardtail I love. Hope the finger heals well! Great pain threshold, all the long miserable rides you go on raises the ceiling to be sure! That trails looks fun! Very much like the trails I ride my Soul on, except all those crazy boulders! Wow. Its time to get out for a short ride today. Its rained nearly non-stop for a couple days now, so I haven't ridden for a while, hopefully things are firming up and good to go today!
For me, the suggested reach for my height 6'1" is ALWAYS too big. Give me a nice little 440mm-450mm and I'm GOOD.

You say how much you love this bike, and I don’t doubt that you do… and I know it’s a fantastic bike… but we can feel a higher level of exuberance on other bikes that you’ve reviewed.
Obviously you love the Spot Rocker above all other hardtails… but even the now famous “it just dances underneath you” from your Nimble 9 review… you couldn’t hold the glee back!
…the BFE Max… the Big Al… I am just not sure we get the same euphoria from this review.

Keep in mind i had a broken finger. It's hard to be exuberant when you're in pain. It had already been a long day with 2 hours of trials riding before.l this ride and i was pretty tired. I always recommend focusing more on the words i say than the tone of voice i have, since so much comes into play with how much energy i have at a given moment.

Steel hardtails are basically returning to childhood. Next time buddy tape the gloved hand. That way when you keep riding you get a little more protection.
My friend jammed his pinky once playing basketball and it was bent close to 90 degrees with a little bone showing through the skin. My brother grabbed his wrist and with out thinking about it straightened it out, kind of like you did yourself. He seemed mostly fine didn't even bleed or swell. Scary injury but not necessarily that serious.
I've learned that every break is different. In this case, my tendons ripped off a piece of bone when it bent sideways. No surgery is needed, but i do need a lot of physical therapy. It's a slow recovery my doc tells me.

Just took my 853 Sherpa out for it’s first ride today. Unreal how good it is!! Soooo smooth. Feels like I’m cheating.
Isn't it amazing how smooth that bike it? People tell me I'm crazy and I can't feel the difference between frames. I can, and so can everyone else. Such a great bike, congrats.

I destroyed a single toe on a ride once catching a root at 15-20 mph. Took off my shoe and sock. Three the nail out and put it all back on and rode out the rest of the ride. Once the adrenaline wore off after the ride it was a bad day. Having the trail ibuprofen would have been a God send.
Yeah, it was rough a few hours later. I figured I had a small window to finish filming this review before the adrenaline wore off.
Great review! Hope the finger heals quickly. I have broken fingers twice mountain biking over the last 25 years, can still see where they were broken but all good otherwise.

Curious how you compare this to the Nimble 9. I reckon the Sherpa is a bit lighter, but the Nimble 9 may feel more capable on the steep chunk, but would love to hear your thoughts!

Looking forward to the Ti comp. I would be interested in how much different the ride and weight of the 4130 version. In one of Stanton's videos, he mentioned the only difference was 1mm extra thickness in the top tube.

I think it's only 0.1mm extra, and that's not a lot.

@@cycling_plurality I have an XL Comic SolarisMax. I think it was right around 6lbs IIRC. Cotic claims 5.8 lbs for a L.
@@cycling_plurality But the point of 853 isn't that it's lighter than 4130. It's supposed to be stronger which allows for thinner tubes. The weight savings is from the thinner tubes. At least that's my understanding.

Someone already got back to me last week and was stoked that I found out about the company via your channel. They had great things to say about you. I believe it was Beal.
A few of your videos (I believe the Switch9er and Honzo ESD) opened my eyes about longer-travel forks on hardtail and how imbalanced they can make the ride when the going gets a bit rough. That was the first time I paused and thought maybe I don't need the Slackline, even though it sounds good in theory. The Sherpa takes 27.5 x 3.0 if I wanna go 27.5, and the geometry doesn't get screwed up if I go 120 mm on the fork. A Slackline with a 120 mm fork changes the HTA and STA about a degree in the positive direction. Doesn't sound too enticing when you look at it that way.
Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. Appreciate the replies. I know you get a ton of these comments on a daily basis.
So much fun to watch. I'm glad you included the shaky video at the end. It gave a better idea of what the ride feel is like. Too much of that, however, and I start feeling sick. Just the right amount here.
Also glad to hear you have more bikes in for review. I hope that means more companies are taking you more seriously. They should.

@@hardtailparty Yeah, it's great and your description of the ride is spot on. It's compliant yet tight at the same time. Always wanted a Stanton though, since reading about them in Dirt magazine. Would be great to see you do a mini world tour in the future in hardtail loving countries with trails and factory tours, like UK, France and Germany plus more. Hope the finger is on the mend.

The Yakuza cut the little finger because without it you can't hold a sword. An handlebar is more or less like a sword.
I know they use to make a steel version of the Spot rocker, you ever pedaled one? I take you've tested this out with 29x2.6 & 2.8? Really thank you for everything you do for the hardtail community!
I've only pedalled a steel rocker in a parking lot. The geo was pretty old school
@@hardtailparty Oh dang didn't realize geo was changed. I saw that it was made until like 2019 & assumed it was the same as the carbon. I guess I won't be looking at the steel model.

I'd love to see it tested with a 51mm offset 120mm fork and a 50mm stem if you get the chance Steve..
It's all personal preference, but I've never preferred a 51mm offset to a 44, so chances are it wouldn't fare well in my opinion.
I hope the pinky is healing right. I blew it on the rehab of my ring finger that I broke on Cinco de Mayo 2019. Now I only have 80% range of motion on it. A ligament pulled off its bony attachment and scarred down in the wrong spot.
That was my same injury: the tendons pulled off a chunk of bone. My hand specialist has been giving me rehab exercises and il back to 90% use at the moment. She told me it's a VERY sloe recovery but she's happy with my progress
How would you compare this to the Niner SIR 9?

Thanks for the review. Been looking for a steel hardtail and like that they make this with 142 dropouts as I have several nice, but older wheel sets. How do you think it would feel with a 140mm 29er fork?
I think a 140 fork would ruin some of the magic. It's rated up to a 130mm fork, but i wasn't once tempted to go beyond 120.

Yes, for different reasons and different terrain. I've recommended both to different bike consultation clients, spending on terrain and how they'll be ridden.

After years on a Trek Alpha frame 6700 xc bike I picked up a '21 Big Honzo DL but it's better down the steeper stuff, of course, but just doesn't feel nimble or have a relaxed position. And I could blame the reach, but I can't seem to bunny hop it nearly as high, it doesn't instill a ton of confidence. Can't return the thing so it's got me looking at other frames. Considering you were close to hitting knees on the 17", suppose the 19" would be ideal for someone 5'11"? The price for this steel frame isn't bad so long as I can swap most components over.
Thoughts, anyone? For those in the Mid-Atlantic I ride green/blue at Fountainhead, Lake Fairfax, Wakefield/Accotink.

There aren't many options, but I've reviewed a few. Chromag doesn't send bikes for review, and walteorks only makes one-off custom bikes, so they can't send one either.
OH SHAT the finger 😱 Did you not go to hospital? I was in Austria for a week and green trails aren't what i know as a green over there hehee I was thankful that a friend lend me his full squish as a beginner. I would have probably ended up in hospital that week on a Hardtail😅

@Kaede Schulz and remember that it's measured at sag, so it's closer to 65.5* at static. Not bad for a 120mm fork.
