  • Not a fan of carbon or aluminium mountain bike frames? There’s always steel!
    Steel frames have their own unique appeal; they have slinky, slender tubes that can create gorgeous, clean lines and they’re more easily repairable than carbon or aluminium.
    Not only that, but the inherent qualities of the ferrous material steel frames are made from gives them a damped yet feedback-rich ride feel, with the “steel is real” phrase often thrown around for good reason.
    So, if you’re looking to turn into a metal head, here are 5 steel-framed mountain bikes that should be on your radar!

      might not count since it has a 7071 rear triangle but the original limited run Actofive P train, alternatively I'm a big fan of the idea of getting something like a ragley hardtail or building something and making an epic singlespeed fully rigid bike from it

    We're spoiled for choice of brilliant steel frames and they all look amazing, Pipedream's attention to detail and quality as well as sliding drops sold it for me. But that Reeb looks tasty.

  • @UKMitchy
    @UKMitchy ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I bought a Pipedream Moxie last year. Unfortunately their sizing chart suggested a medium size, instead of small. The frame is really well built, but not much chance of fitting a decent dropper post due to the curved seat tube. It rode well, but is very stiff for a steel frame. I sold it due to always feeling it was too big for me. The new sizing charts have changed now, and suggest a small frame. I ride a Cotic Jeht which is a brilliant steel fs bike. Also have a Kona Honzo ST in a small size which fits me better. Don't expect any reply to emails from Pipedream as well. Be warned.

    • @Mudncheese
      @Mudncheese ปีที่แล้ว

      And my experience with pipedream was great. I was concerned about the size and had an open chat with the owner explaining me his logic and what size should be better. Sirius is stiffer than other steel bikes I had yes, but it pedals better and has an "oomph" when you want to charge. So that's that too.

    • @UKMitchy
      @UKMitchy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mudncheese Well I guess you were lucky the. not getting a reply is off putting for some people and could lose sale. The moxie is a nice bike, but if I had bought a small frame, I might still have it now.

    I can afford any bicycle at my old age but I still prefer vintage steel due to its anti-fatigue qualities. Heat treated Chromoly lasts way longer than any other bike material.. it’s not even debatable. Steel is way heavier though which is a big negative.

    Love the bike design th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube.All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.

    Is it time to drop 'more easily repairable' from the list of benefits of steel...? It was certainly true in terms of getting a crack fixed or a panier-rack boss reattached in some far-flung place (when dreaming that you might take your steel tourer round the world), but I think it's less true/valid now. Depending on the frame and where you are in the world, there's an argument that it's easier to fix a carbon frame than a thin-tube steel one. Aluminium is certainly difficult to repair - but is generally more robust and cheaper to replace anyway.

    • @cjohnson3836
      @cjohnson3836 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. There's still far more people with the skillset to repair a steel frame than there are to repair carbon. Even in the developed world. The issues isn't ease, its cost. And as cost of living increases, labor does too. With repair, in basically any industry, the main cost is the labor. So for a job of similar time table, the cost will be similar. The question is whether the cost difference of a steel frame vs steel repair is enough to warrant repair. Carbon frames the differential is greater due to the upfront cost of a carbon frame.

    • @grigorbrowning
      @grigorbrowning ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cjohnson3836 poor phrasing on my part. I should perhaps have said that the discussion is more nuanced than it was 20 years ago (inevitably). I fully agree with your comments in the broad sense - but might argue that they're less applicable to the steel frames in this video (which are all fairly high end). I'd contend that there aren't a vast number of people who can do a decent job of welding thin-walled 853 tubing. Perhaps a crack at the end of a tube (but that shouldn't happen with a quality frame) but not a bad dent or heavy scratch in the middle of a tube. There aren't a vast number of folk doing a good job of fixing carbon either. I guess my point was that for a frame costing more than £1k, the chances are you're sending it off to get fixed - whether it's steel or carbon.
      Again, I agree with your overall point. Perhaps what I'd like to see is more honesty in videos like these - "expensive frames are harder to repair than the steel clunker you had as a kid, regardless of frame material". But TH-cam isn't the place for nuance... 🙂

    • @cjohnson3836
      @cjohnson3836 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grigorbrowning No repair is going to be the same as it was new. Even with carbon. You're still overlapping existing material with new layup. If you're at the point you're cutting a piece of frame off, be it carbon, steel or otherwise, in order to put a new piece in, you're already beyond the point where you give two turds of whether its 0.5mm thicker than before. And its not like a few cm of a different size is going to change the bike in any meaningful way. You're drastically overestimating what is being done.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grigorbrowningyou would have to tig weld it. Skilled tig welders should be able to weld such a frame.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Our point is, of the the three main frame materials in use in cycling, steel should be the easiest to repair. Easiest to repair well? Maybe not, but certainly you could be in a lot of places around the world and get a steel bike fixed to a degree, which you certainly couldn't do with carbon

  • @2001redz28
