This was a nicely-done video. The interaction with your daughter is priceless. I do agree with the comments about the cost of the kit. For the price of this kit, you could buy a Fender Blues Jr. which is a better amp. I’ve done a lot of DIY audio electronics projects. The benefits of DIY are many, but saving money rarely is one of them. The benefits of DIY include learning how things work; the satisfaction of making something yourself: development of problem-solving skills; and the ability to make a custom product that you can’t get any other way. With regard to the cost: This is a Stew Mac kit. StewMac products tend to be expensive. However, they sell only high-quality products, usually designed for professionals. They stand behind their products and have exceptional customer service. There are other amp kits available that cost a lot less. This kit included the cabinet, which most kits do not include.
Thank you Tim! You're right on the money with everything you said regarding the cost of the amp kit but also what sets this one apart from others and learning aspect behind building your own vs buying. Glad you enjoyed the video👍👊
OK, Mike, you keep knocking it out of ther park! Great job! As an old dude, just let me say you are doing a fantastical job! Soon you will playing in Her band! Keep it up and keep these GREAT videos coming as well.
If you're willing to buy the parts individually, you can source them yourself for a lot less (assuming you have or can build a cabinet for it and a metal housing suitable for the tubes and wiring), and then assemble them according to the plans available online.

I really enjoy wiring the board with components but those chassis as you say get pretty cramped when things are in place. I noticed this building a 5e3 Deluxe amp. Good father daughter time too. @@WoodshopMike I bet you did, I'm currently working on a scratch-build Soldano SLO-50 amp build project, but I'm going with a set of matched KT77 power tubes.
Always impressed how "soldering" becomes "soddering". On all channels where sodderwork uses sodder of course; not just you here. Great you included your daugter in this work
Look Limey, this gross waste of money is an American project, don't you have enough of your own to say something about. HaHa .... limey, I don't even think I've said that it ever in my life before. I hope I used it correctly. I'm trying to insinuate your from England or some other "non-'merica" squaaaak
Great video and a fun kit. One safety note - the power cord looks like it's attaching the ground/earth wire to the tag strip that is mounted on a transformer bolt. This is a fundamental no-no and should have its own chassis mounted bolt - it's not up to "code" as it were and places a risk of the earth becoming detached should the transformer bolt loosen which is more likely due to the weight on it. The safety ground should not be shared with common ground either! ideally to reduce noise. Check out Psionic Audio's channel covering this on a lot of the repair/servicing he does.
Awesome great job... I do believe that I would have needed a break & a few drinks... To finish the Amp.. A lot of parts. But it's a beautiful vintage style Amp. Personally my wife and I use multiple effects pedals that have amp can speaker SIMS... That said it's great that you are starting your daughter out understanding the guitar gear .. Guitar it's self so someday she can modify or Build her own stuff.. Cheers 🎸🎵🎶🎶
Thanks, this one really wasn't too bad. Had it together in just about 6 hours no drinks other than coffee required 😃. We had a ton of fun putting this together and now she's got a great amp to enjoy!
My daughter gets excited when I play for her, she nods her head and dances along. Loves watching and touches everything on the guitar including the tuners but somehow doesn't get poked by the ends of the strings. She can barely walk now but won't be long before she can play a guitar.
Hey man if she loses interest that just means I inherit a sweet little amp right! 😂 All kidding aside there's a ton of wisdom in your comment and something I think many people forget 👊
Tip. When you do the panel jacks. Install them in the front facing inwards. Then, when you solder, it will be the exact spacing required. The flip the jacks to the correct orientation
Here's a link to the kit we used in this video: stewmac.sjv.io/oqkqjg This amp has an 8" speaker, but they have a few other kits to choose from if that's not what you're looking for👍
I know you are a newbie but that is an eyelet board, there are also turret boards. Point to point is like a 1930's radio where the components are scattered all over near to where they connect. They use some terminal strips but that's it they jump around from this point to that point. The turret/eyelet board was the next advancement followed by couplets, which were the first multi component components. They would have a few resistors and capacitors in one component usually wire 4 to 8 leads. This is an eyelet board construction though not point to point, just saying, not trying to be the know-it-all a-hole but I figured you would want to know.
Nice video though have to agree it"s a bit on the exy side for what it is compared to what you could get off the shelf. To get it to Australia would be USD 913 / AUD 1351 as there is nothing like Stewmac in Australia that I am aware of. Nothing beats a valve amp which is why I have 7 so it is not hard to see why you went down this path.
😳Damn, that kit is way more expensive than fully assembled tube amps from reputable companies, that gives you more for your money and also sound better. Then again this is Stewmac, they are known for significantly marking up the price for everything they sell.
This so cool to watch father and daughter people this what great perants look like getting evolved with ur kids and to have learned experience with them that they take with them for years and pass on to there kids ect...
Did they say how much the kit cost? I could have missed it. I just lost an amp similar, a 6v6 and one 12ax7 with a ten inch speaker. Mine was old though.
Capacitor discharging tip from Gerald Weber of Kendrick Amps: from ground, clip to the first (or in this case only) preamp tube, pin 1. (unplugged of course) Make sure power switch and standby switch are on with volume up. All caps will gracefully drain in a minute or two. I verified this with my Deluxe schematic. They discharge through resistors so its not a quick zap. Of course a 10 watt 100 ohm resistor will also work, but you have to be careful not to miss any caps.
@@WoodshopMike you kicked ass in your guitar build, so will you be doing a fancy lacquered cab? Or will you be covering it in tolex? Finger or dovetail joints? I don't have a shop, so I cheat by using those pine bee hive boxes at tractor supply.
@gayrambo4529 thank you! Without giving too many details away 😃, it won't be covered in tolex. I'm not 100% sure about the finish at the moment but there will be some nice joinery involved. Nice work around with using bee hive boxes 👊
Nice little kit, pretty easy to build when you are new to this world, very few but quality components, nice finish product👍 The only thing is you tend to call the layout a "schematic", it's 2 different documents, but for somebody who never built an amp it's near from the perfection!
That's cool you're showing your daughter the trade. She'll grow up to be a wonderful woodworker herself, if that's ehat she chooses to do. Edit: Tube amps have to warm up before they come on.
The finished cab comes as part of the kit. I'll be building another amp in a few months and will be building the cab as well. Pretty excited about that one!

Ok, 850 bucks is ridiculous. I was going to sell mine for 250 already built. I guess with labor the amp would cost 1500 bucks? People are crazy. Can you see why people are going for modeling amps now? Interesting video for sure. But no-thanks Stew Mack.
@@groovee63the daughter is learning about building something and the work involved I built a 5f6 with my son and a 63 replica strat he also built a cabinet with his grampa for a early Gibson falcon chassis .so this is the start of something great.
Weird question, but when it short circuits to ground why is that happening? I've watched the video but I still can't seem to figure out why it happened.
No worries! It shorted to ground because when I soldered the RCA plug (speaker plug) I unknowingly soldered the positive wire to the same surface the negative wire is soldered to.

What a great dad!
Awe she's so adorable. I gotta get me an amp like that. 😆
That's awesome that you're teaching her how to build a guitar amp, cool!!!
We had a blast! 😃
@@WoodshopMike I bet you did, I'm currently working on a scratch-build Soldano SLO-50 amp build project, but I'm going with a set of matched KT77 power tubes.
@simonkormendy849 sounds awesome!
Very likeable kiddo! Neat family project.
She's a goof ball for sure 😀 Glad you enjoyed it!
Always impressed how "soldering" becomes "soddering".
On all channels where sodderwork uses sodder of course; not just you here.
Great you included your daugter in this work
I blame it on my amazing dialect 🤣 she had a blast working on her amp!
Look Limey, this gross waste of money is an American project, don't you have enough of your own to say something about. HaHa .... limey, I don't even think I've said that it ever in my life before. I hope I used it correctly. I'm trying to insinuate your from England or some other "non-'merica" squaaaak
It's like Salmon, the L is silent...
You’re a commendable Dad, new sub btw, thank you…
Glad you enjoyed the video😃 great to have you here, thanks for subbing 👊
Cool kid, I’m sure you are very proud of her !
She is pretty awesome😃
Excellent mate! Greetings from Argentina!
Thank you so much!
That guitar is amazing. I envy your daughter 😭
Thank you! We had a lot of fun building the amp and her guitar! 😃
Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the recommendations! I'll have to check that out 💪
ADORABLE JOB
Thanks! 👊
DIY tele $??, DIY Tweed $??, time spent with your daughter, priceless, good vid Dadio, lol
Couldn't agree more! Glad you enjoyed the video👊
My favorite Boston song!
It's such a good song!
@@WoodshopMike it is a project that she will remember for the rest of her life.
She's not the only one 😃
Your daughter is adorable ☺️
She's her own breed 😃
Beautiful guitar ecspecilly those tone knobs good job
Great, thank you. And yeah, the kit thing being a nightmare you talk about at 06:30 was my fear. Gonna order this eventually.
Thanks & you're welcome! Hope you have fun when you order yours!
My daughter gets excited when I play for her, she nods her head and dances along. Loves watching and touches everything on the guitar including the tuners but somehow doesn't get poked by the ends of the strings. She can barely walk now but won't be long before she can play a guitar.
That's awesome! My daughter was the same way 😀
Don't be disappointed if she doesn't take an interest later on. Be excited about the things _she_ into!
Hey man if she loses interest that just means I inherit a sweet little amp right! 😂 All kidding aside there's a ton of wisdom in your comment and something I think many people forget 👊
@@creamwobbly I'll just go with the flow, right now she's interested in guitars and Rage Against The Machine.
That's the only way to do it man. But I've gotta say, barley walking and already rocking to Rage Against The Machine is pretty epic!😃
Well done. Great song choice for the test song.
Thank you so much! I'm just glad you could discern the song! 😃😂
great Boston clip!
Thanks!
Tip. When you do the panel jacks. Install them in the front facing inwards. Then, when you solder, it will be the exact spacing required. The flip the jacks to the correct orientation
Great idea 👍
Thank you for the fancy snap
😂😂 figured that was better than showing only the back of my hand for 2 minutes 👍
I used to love to build Heathkits. Where did you find this amp kit and what's the model #? And how large is the speaker?
Here's a link to the kit we used in this video: stewmac.sjv.io/oqkqjg
This amp has an 8" speaker, but they have a few other kits to choose from if that's not what you're looking for👍
Always around to help. Good job!👍🏼
Thanks dude 👊
Dang she a pro, like her solder skills.
Yeah for never soldering and only watching me a couple times she really did great 😃
Couldn’t have picked better demo song! Nice.
Thanks! 😃
Excelente video inspirador! Muchas gracias! GRAN PADRE!
Thank you very much! 😃
1:18 haha she's like "Dad you shouldn't have told me that and taken the compliment"
hahaha! Yeah I couldn't edit out that expression 😂
Very relaxing your video, I'm gonna learn electronics you're helping thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍😃
I remenber your promise about the amp for your dougther. Nice job my friend.
Thank you very much! Hope you enjoyed the video 😀
Point to point is the best!
Pretty easy too!
This guy's a saint. When we were small, my father used to ask us if we wanna die. We said no. He said then watch and learn, and stop wiggling around.
I don't think I heard those words exactly as a kid, but I'm pretty sure they were thought! 🤣🤣
@@WoodshopMike Hahaha.
_HOW MUCH?!_ jeez that's a bit steep
I need to build one now
It's a fun build! If you build one I'd love to hear your thoughts 😃
Didn't come across as a know-it-all-a-hole at all👊 thanks for the info!
@@WoodshopMike BTW that is nice your daughter is so into your guitar and building stuff.
And the coolest dad of the year award goes to?
Glad you enjoyed the video! 👍😃
Tube amps are hard to beat! Glad you enjoyed the video 👍👊
you guys are great! nice job!
Thank you! 👊
😳Damn, that kit is way more expensive than fully assembled tube amps from reputable companies, that gives you more for your money and also sound better.
Then again this is Stewmac, they are known for significantly marking up the price for everything they sell.
Je trouve ça super que la petite travaille avec son père. En plus elle a l'air super intéressée et plutôt douée. 👍😃
We had a great time working on this amp! She loves being in the shop and building stuff 😀
This so cool to watch father and daughter people this what great perants look like getting evolved with ur kids and to have learned experience with them that they take with them for years and pass on to there kids ect...
Glad you enjoyed the video! We had a great time building this little amp!
Coolest DAD EVER!
👍🙌
Thanks 👊👊
Your daughter has a large personality, give her a microphone also, she's definitely the leader of the band
Haha, she would definitely own the stage 😂
Holy moly, you get 400+ volts on the tubes? Yeah, no wonder it sounds great.
Pretty wild right!?
Did they say how much the kit cost? I could have missed it. I just lost an amp similar, a 6v6 and one 12ax7 with a ten inch speaker. Mine was old though.
That is very cool, full Dad point 🎉
We had fun 😃👊
Capacitor discharging tip from Gerald Weber of Kendrick Amps: from ground, clip to the first (or in this case only) preamp tube, pin 1. (unplugged of course) Make sure power switch and standby switch are on with volume up. All caps will gracefully drain in a minute or two. I verified this with my Deluxe schematic. They discharge through resistors so its not a quick zap. Of course a 10 watt 100 ohm resistor will also work, but you have to be careful not to miss any caps.
Thanks man👊
I'd be curious to see how you'd do with a home-built cab.
Planning to do one later this year! Anything aspect in particular you're curious about with that?
Glad you enjoyed the video, we had a blast putting it together!
Que mejor que probar con una canción de Boston!! Super!
That's cool you're showing your daughter the trade. She'll grow up to be a wonderful woodworker herself, if that's ehat she chooses to do.
Edit: Tube amps have to warm up before they come on.
We had a great time! Yep, I aware that they need to warm up (not saying that rudely) but the patience of the average TH-camr is about .01 seconds 😂
Hi mr...i want know about capasitor ..how a used size capasitor from a ground to anoda preamp stage..
This video feels like there's a part 1.
Where did the DIY cab with DIY cloth came from all of a sudden?
The finished cab comes as part of the kit.
I'll be building another amp in a few months and will be building the cab as well. Pretty excited about that one!

Thanks for your kind answer!
That ain't diy in my book, but you gotta start somewhere! Nice gitaar by the way, cool potknobs! I would rock that pink caster! 😍

Thank you so much! My daughter loves that tele!
Do you want to try some soldering? Umm yeah! I love it.
I really didn't know which way she'd go with that, but she was down for doing some welding not too long ago so not sure why it surprised me 😃
Ok, 850 bucks is ridiculous. I was going to sell mine for 250 already built. I guess with labor the amp would cost 1500 bucks? People are crazy. Can you see why people are going for modeling amps now? Interesting video for sure. But no-thanks Stew Mack.
Yep
@@groovee63the daughter is learning about building something and the work involved I built a 5f6 with my son and a 63 replica strat he also built a cabinet with his grampa for a early Gibson falcon chassis .so this is the start of something great.
The way dorks have, not saying anything about dad and daughter, pushed up mediocre amps into astronomical price levels is a travesty.
@kevinyountrevzupak8686 what amp (kit or otherwise) would you go for in the price range? Appreciate you clarifying no disrespect to my daughter👍👊
@@WoodshopMike Thank you so much for the clarification
@powerfulplayer906 absolutely! 👊
