    I furnished most of my home with antiques as a young bride: figured if they lasted the 100 years before me, it was gonna serve me well. Almost 40 years later and I have never had to repair/replace anything!

      @@MyMusiqueLive Buy them at Estate Sales, usually the last day of sale everything is 50% off. Buy from individuals selling on local, online marketplaces. If you are buying from an antique store, you will pay too much-it's how the store owner pays their rent and employees.

      @rachelbutler790 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +723

      I could be wrong, but by the looks of the upholstered things she’s buying, they look like they probably came from a consignment shop, not necessarily a thrift store. Consignment shops are nicer and the furniture usually has to be inspected and approved by the shop before being accepted for sale. That being said, I’m sure she still does a rigorous cleaning process before bringing a piece inside.

      @@thatvalensteingirl, first, carefully inspect the furniture before bringing it into your home! Then, if the upholstery is in good condition, have it professionally cleaned before bringing it into your home. If your upholstery is not in good condition have it professionally reupholstered, again, BEFORE bringing it into your home. Same thing with case goods, like dressers and bookcases, etc. Take out all the drawers and carefully inspect everywhere! Vacuum out the piece! Rub down with alcohol!

      @@alexia52118, unless the furniture was painted, which most fine furniture made pre-1978 was NOT, I wouldn’t be concerned unless the paint was chipping off or I had kids that wanted to bite the furniture. The Thomasville chairs I bought 14 years ago originally cost $300-$500 each. The table originally was $3,000. I was able to get that gorgeous furniture from the original owner (who had had it for 13 years at that point) for the ridiculously low price of only $750. I cherished that set for 10years and took excellent care of it, until I moved and sold it on consignment. The point is, you can get very high end furniture for pennies on the dollar if you know what to look for. Most of my furniture is bought this way, and I feel fortunate to have such lovely things.

Then in time inherited some furniture, made some furniture and bought the other few pieces second hand. We honestly thought it was just the super wealthy people that actually bought new furniture. To be fair, my husband refuses to pay money for anything made of press wood because he says it is just a matter of time before it falls apart. It would be interesting to see where you buy second-hand furniture that looks like this, and is actually "affordable". I won't hold my breath though.

      I’m in the Chicago suburbs, and it depends on what you mean by “affordable” but I see a fair amount of good stuff on facebook marketplace. For certain things and when I’m willing to spend more, I will go to resale businesses that restore the pieces before selling them. I’ve paid everything from $20 for a nice-but-not-fancy end table to $400 dollars for a trendy solid wood dining table and bench (found it on the original site for $2k) to 1500 for a restored mid century credenza.
      Unfortunately I think availability is massively location dependent. Plus you have to have the time to wait for good stuff to pop up (I was checking everyday for weeks before I found the dining table).

      @heatherschank5651 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Affordable is relative. I don't want to pay $500 for a used leather sofa, but it is affordable compared to a new item of similar quality at $5000. Furniture is NEVER going to appreciate in value though, unless you hardly touch it for decades then know which 2 year time period to sell it.

      It really depends on the area and the stores. Where I live, there are a ton of antique stores, but the prices vary wildly. Some are high end antiques and are super expensive, some are just outright crazy expensive, some are decent, and some are a mixture. I have one store that I absolutely love. Some things are pricy, but most of it is well below the price they should be. I got a solid metal, very old antique chest there that normally runs for a few hundred dollars for only $50.
      Same for thrift stores. Where I'm at, there's a few thrift stores in very rich areas, so you can definitely find something expensive for a great price. But where my parents live, they have to drive almost an hour away just to find a decent store with good stuff.

      @@newkidpresh I bought a beautiful sectional from the Chicago suburbs. The owner maybe used it 1-2 years, covered it, and kept it in storage when they upgraded. I agree it's the area and luck of the draw.

    Thank you for the video. I'm 65 and have never purchased new furniture it is all beautiful hand crafted antiques from my family. Funny thing is people do not like this kind of furniture any more but just having mahogany, beautiful walnut and cherry wood from the early 1900s makes me feel good and it is strong enough to last 100 years.

I have to work on a tight budget, but I save like crazy, then go spend my money on 2nd hand but quality items - and everyone that comes to my home, I get a great reaction from when they see what I've put together. And my home is so stylish and comfortable and a one-off, and reflects me so well. I love it!

Luckily it’s now the “cool” thing to do for the younger generations - and for exactly the SAME REASONS!!
