  • Louis Of Burgundy, Father Of Louis XV : Louis of France (1682, Château de Versailles - 1712, Marly), Duke of Burgundy, was the son of Louis of France (known as the Grand Dauphin) and Marie-Anne of Bavaria. His maternal grandparents were Ferdinand-Marie, Elector of Bavaria, and Henriette-Adélaïde of Savoy, daughter of Victor-Amédée I, Duke of Savoy. He was second in line to his paternal grandfather Louis XIV but died before Louis XIV did. His youngest son became King Louis XV in 1715.

      Not sure : the faction around the duc de Bourgogne was highly conservative and retrograde. They were inspired by Fénelon, who wanted the old system of government back (return of the princes in every department and government councils, return of the most powerful lords at the head of the different regions of France, etc…), based on the old medieval system. it would have been a catastrophe.

    Wow I wonder if he didn't pass, and the Burgundy faction rose to power, would there still have been a revolution? If things went back to a more local rule and more people had power, you could see how they might manage the countryside and cities better and mitigate the mess the later Louis inflicted upon France.

    Oh my gosh, what a tragic sequence of deaths in such a short time! I can't even imagine! Sadly very common- my g-g-grandmother lost 4 of her 6 children in 5 days to diptheria- but it has such huge ramifications when it happens in a royal family. Very interesting about the Burgundian faction! It sounds like a big "what-if?" in French history, & one that might've been better than what actually happened.

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There were plenty of nobles who had great ideas that somehow never came to pass.. But I guess that's the case with every event in history. What if Catherine of Aragon had had a living son... What if England would've allowed Tsar Nicholas II to move to England ? What if Hitler had been shot during WW1... A bit crazy if you really think about it too much !

    • @beth7935
      @beth7935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheKingsofFrance To be _really_ annoying & technical, Catherine of Aragon DID have a living son! Henry, Duke of Cornwall was born perfectly healthy, but sadly died of an unknown illness at 52 days old- but ofc you meant one that lived to inherit the throne :D My fave Tudor "what-if?", tho, is "what if Henry VIII's older brother Arthur had survived to rule?"- with Catherine of Aragon as his queen, ofc, as they were married briefly before Arthur sadly died aged 15. Obviously LITERALLY ANYONE would've been better than Henry VIII, but I've read a bio of Arthur, & while there's not a lot known about him as a person, if you factor in his upbringing & his father Henry VII's plans for him, I think there's a high chance he would've been quite a decent king- much more like his father than his brother; he was certainly raised to be the polar opposite of the way his brother turned out to be...
      But I'll stop with the English history on a French history channel! :D I just don't know enough to conjure up a French "what-if?"- & ofc it's pure speculation with no right or wrong answers. It's just fun when you do know enough stuff to put it together, & you can debate how various factors might've played out- storytelling basically! I totally see how some people would find speculating about what DIDN'T happen pointless, silly or uninteresting tho... Brilliant vid, as always! :)

      @@beth7935 see, that’s why I don’t cover the Tudors haha ! That’s other people’s territory, although I might make a little sidestep to Anne Boleyn’s stay in France, Mary Tudor who married Louis XII and Mary Queen of Scots who married François II.
      I reached out to another channel to do a collab so i could just do the ‘french’ part of their lives while they’d do the remainder… but they’re not interested.
      I’m definitely not doing their entire life… that’s really not my territory, but they were a part of French history so I won’t pass them by either…

      @@TheKingsofFrance Ye Gods no!! Please don't! :D There's waaaay too much Tudor already! :D ;) But looking at those 3 ladies' time _in France,_ as an expert on _French_ royal history, & from a _French_ perspective, WOULD be different, & really interesting! And a great link to step from English history into French :)
      ...And I did see a comment you made on another channel, asking about a collab, & cos I'm a busybody- & cos I'd love to see it!- I suggested a couple of other channels:
      Bruce Fummey of Scotland History Tours for Mary Queen of Scots; he's done some great stuff on her, & the Scottish perspective, rather than the English, was really enlightening to me.
      History Calling for the others- sadly, Claire Ridgway of The Anne Boleyn Files, the excellent youtuber who's the only reason I got into Tudor history at all, would probably be too busy, but HC is equally excellent in terms of research & sources, like you, & she does Tudor stuff but she said she was looking to branch out...
      I can't speak for them, lol; I just loved your idea & these channels are the best ones I can think of for it- & I watch a LOT :D
