  • Jeanne Du Barry - What The Movie Did Not Show You - Her Undignified End : As the former favorite of Louis the fifteenth, the Countess Jeanne Du Barry, who was born Jeanne Bécu, accumulated in her name all the hatred of a people who found it hard to accept those who had enriched themselves during the ancient regime, especially when these opportunists came from their own ranks. It would ultimately cost her her head. Jeanne Du Barry’s relationship with Louis the fifteenth has been brilliantly documented in the movie by Maïwenn starring Maïwenn herself, and Johnny Depp. In today’s video you’ll find out what happened to Du Barry after the events of the movie.

Very nicely done. People need to know that prior to Mme DuBarry's death, French nobles approached the guillotine with quiet dignity. DuBarry's pleas and resistance awakened many of the 'audience" who began to see the Reign of Terror as cruel and unjust. Her please may not have saved her life but it helped to save many more who would have followed to the same fate. May she rest in peace.

Yeah, this is what I always thought. If more people had went kicking and screaming and begging for their lives, I think the Terror would have ended quicker. But so many people, even normal people, felt if was their duty to go with dignity and poise.

So sad! It is interesting that filmmakers Maiwenn and Sofia Coppola (Marie Antionette) did not show their heroines' demise. How awful for poor Jeanne, if only she had stayed in London.

Stories like Jean du Barry are incredibly sorrowful 😞 she only joined the aristocracy then the nobility because she was living in absolute adverse poverty and wanted to access upward socioeconomic mobility just to survive and thrive. But I also feel for jacobins as well the French Royalty, nobility, aristocracy, and the affluent bourgeoisie treated the peasantry extremely terribly no humanity was given to them I understand why they created the reign of terror

Such a tragic outcome - the deceptive lure of money and prestige ultimately led to her demise. She could have lived a trouble-free life if she'd remained on the periphery and stayed hidden away from the brutal revolutionary movement.

On a side note, the Pavillion de Musique built at Louvenciennes by architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux was a triumph of French Neoclassicism. Du Barry convinced Louis XV to build the pavilion for her as she felt the chateau lacked adequate entertaining spaces. She also had plans to rebuild the old chateau in the new style, but these plans were abandoned after the death of the king.

It's only a dream right now. But when it happens, I would love to meet you for a coffee or meal. And I know u would know a train or shuttle we could take straight to Paris. And it's also a dream to actually meet you. I'm talking about maybe next summer. But it's gonna happen. 😊

Very, very interesting to learn about her life after her banishment from the French court.
I am wondering whether the King's consort, Marie Antoinette had her say in her banishment!
Marie Antoinette was very displeased when she found out Madame Comtesse du Barry's position at court by her dame d'honneur, Comtesse Anne de Noailles.
Why did Marie Antoinette dislike Madame du Barry so much?
Is it because she of royal blood and du Barry was a commoner?
WasMarie Antoinette jealous of du Barry's extraordinary beauty?
I have never found out the trūe reason/s for her hatred.
The fate of all those royals, aristocrats or those who assossiated with theFrench court was vicious and cruel as the Revolutionaires went on a rampage of vindictive creulty that even the leaders of theRevolution became victims themselves such as Marat and importantly, Robespierre even the king's cousin, Louis, Duc de Orleans met with Madame La Guilottine herself.
The Reign of Terror was aptly named.
du Barry screamed andwas horrified terribly to put to death.
    Poor woman.!

Sadly, Anne, duchesse de Noailles and her husband were guillionted too.

I am saddened by their fates.😢

Not just a movie also an operetta or a musical about her life - long before the movie! I think it was Thomas Carlyle or some other British historian on the Revolution who said " she disgraced the scaffold like she had disgraced the throne." referring to the fact that she had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the guillotine - poor woman!!!

You say, "...although she had risen to the heights of aristocratic splendour she had not acquired the same unwavering dignity in the face of terrible adversity". Some aristocrats did show great courage and dignity when sent to the guillotine. Others did not. The same is true of the poor, "common" people who faced the same fate. To say that courage in the face of death is an aristocratic trait is just a stereotype, and rather snobbish too.

What the movie did not show me was Jeanne Du Barry. Instead, it showed me an actress who was both much too old for the part, who also eschewed period accuracy in favor of modern aesthetics.

I read in Cervi's Last Libertines (NYRB) that if the aristos had resisted going to the guillotine as fiercely as du Barry did, maybe fewer of them would have been guillotined. But she was a commoner. They were aristocrats. Their pride and composure made it ieasy to execute them. Strange that in this case, death was not the great leveler. On the contrary, t showed class distinction.

We can’t rule out that many of the unfortunates who died in a “dignified” manner were able to purchase or otherwise obtain a soporific to calm them before execution. I’m inclined to believe this was frequently the case…!

    DuBarry
Barry is anglicized version of Hebrew Beeri.
As in biblical Beeri, father of Judith, who was one of the wives of Esau, elder son of Isaac and twin brother to Jacob who robbed him of his inheritance.
The family feud has never ended.
I could say more, but that would get me banned on TH-cam.
