I used to have a Canon EOS 400D - It was an amazing camera and it took some amazing photos - I used to pair it with s Tamron 70 to 300mm lens or a 16 to 35mm and it produced some mind-bogglingly beautiful images. It was my first dslr and I have great fond memories of it.
Such amazing images! I just bought one of these for 50 Euros including 2 lenses, just for fun! When a camera set doesn't cost more than a night at the movies, then photography is fun again!
Bought my first DSLR after watching this video. A Canon 400d with a Tamaron 18-250, all for €40. Just finished a long hike though the mountains and made some incredible photos.
I've only had one 'serious' trip out with my 400d. Like this video, it was a woodland session, and I ended up with some really great shots. The EOS 400d is a really great camera for getting started with your first DSLR.
Absolutely agree. As it's got none of the in depth menu systems and fancy features, it's just about the photography. For people wanting to learn the game, I don't think you can beat cameras like this. Have a great weekend, Neil🖖
Brilliant! I shoot with an old 450D, if you get to know your camera's limitations, such as its limited low light performance and a low dynamic range, you can still take some awesome images.
Hi, do you think the 450D is an interesting model for an intermediate level photographer who'd want to try using a reflex camera? I found one for 90€ but I'm still unsure if it is worth it?
If you're new to DSLRs then any will be a great step to improve your skills and decide if it's for you or not. The 400d performs brilliantly so I expect the 450 will be equally good 🖖
As someone who got into photography via a Asus tf 101 tablet lol. I quickly progressed into DSLRs and my first and only DSLR has been a rebel Xti. I plan on getting a 5d mark 2 . But honestly, the xti has been such an experience for the last 12 years that iv had it... couldn't be happier!
It's a really great camera. Sure it has it's drawbacks when compared to more modern mirrorless, but at the end of the day, it's capable of producing lovely images. I'm using this camera in my latest video and it's a pleasure to shoot with. Thanks for watching 🖖
I was able to buy almost the same exact set up that you show. It's the 400d with the kit lens 18-55 (upgraded with the stabilizer) the Sigma 28-300 hyperzoom and a Quantaray 300 zoom. The whole thing came with the Taurus grip, extra battery and digi charger in that Canon backpack for less then $30 after the senior discount at the Humane Society Thrift store. Then I threw it in the back of my closet for a couple of years and forgot about it. I honestly thought it was a cheapy Meade telescope but when I found that in my garage I started to question what was in the other backpack. It was like I discovered it a second time and it works great!! I need to get organized...
I have just acquired a 400d, and your video gives me great hope as a camera salesman bagged it completely saying chuck it in the bin and buy this you beaut $1000 version. I am just starting my digital journey, so you info was very helpful.
Yeah, sounds like a salesman to me 😁 The 400d while basic, is a great camera to get started. There will be more videos with the 400d as time goes on mainly because it's fun to use and the images look great. Thanks for watching, Mick🖖
love that last shot with the vines! great video and great advice for everyone - you can make great images without the highest end equipment! 👏👏👏 also that last blooper. your face perfectly describes how I feel every time i talk to the camera... 🤣
Thanks, Chris. That last blooper was about the point where I'd had enough of my stupid face malfunctions 😂 I was quite happy with the images although using something so basic made me realize how much I rely on simple things like live view! Have a good one, mate 🖖
Hi David, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this video. You talk to the point and have a great balance of info and showing of the shots. Yours is the best video I've been able to find on this brilliant little camera and now you've inspired me to buy one. All the best sir!
I picked my 400d with a grip and cf card very cheaply in mint condition too. I love this camera as I prefer its limitations; it's just like shooting with a traditional 35mm slr. There are plenty of ef lenses at a reasonable price for this camera too. If your posting your pics on flicker or any of the other social media platforms then 10 megapixles is a good start. Great video too.
Yeah absolutely. Many social platforms crush the hell out of your images (looking at you Instagram and Facebook)😂 Honestly really enjoyed using the 400d. Only thing I missed was the live view but unless you're shooting low angles etc and don't want to go belly down to get the shot, it's manageable. Thanks for watching, James. Have a good one, mate 🖖😁
Hi David, I really approve of your videos showing that you can still use old gear like that Canon - technically, most, if not all of my gear is pretty old now but it still takes the same shots that it always did and I've never had any complaints (well, at least not about the gear that I use!!!!). I guess I do find the preview screen on my D200 rather small on the odd occasion that I use that camera now - at the time, moving from film, it was like "wow, I can see what my shot looks like before I get the film processed!!!" and now it's "how on earth can I preview my image on a screen the size of a postage stamp!!!" It seems bonkers that you can now buy pretty good, old camera bodies for the price of a train ticket.
Yeah, absolutely. I still love the Nikon d70 with it's 6mpx ccd sensor. I absolutely love everything that the modern Sony's bring to the table, but just like you said, the images are still great from these older bodies, just as they were 15 years ago. When you consider that Instagram displays images at less than 2mpx, many people have no need of these modern high resolution cameras. Live view got me though, or rather the lack of it. It's been a long time since I've had to go belly down in a forest to be able to see my composition 😂 Thanks for watching, Tim🖖😁
after owning this camera for a long long time and (1) only using a fraction of its features and (2) having all my photos washed out before i do extensive tweaking on my laptop…i am thankful for your video and committed to learning. 🤙🏼😊
Happy it was helpful to you. It's a really good camera despite being a bit lacking in features by today's standards. If you want a solid camera for just photography, this is definitely a great option. Thanks for watching 🖖
Someone just gave me this Camara because it was sitting in a basements unused. Wasn't sure if it was just some outdated junk considering they didn't want it. Looks like it may have some potential. It's absolutely mint ( new condition) so I'm pretty stoked it might grab some nice landscape images. Can't wait to give it a go. Great video.
Great vlog David. I especially loved your macro frame in this. The shell shot with all the intricate textural details looked amazing! Also the low angle image of the vines is beautiful! I’m glad you shared your experience with this “old camera”. It clearly demonstrates that even these days you can create amazing imagery if you know how to maximise its potential. Gear is way too overatted. You got a new sub! Cheers:)
Ah man, thanks so much🙏 Photography shouldn't just be about the newest gear, sure it makes a difference, but it's not necessarily what people should be focusing on. Happy you liked it🖖😁
I just purchased this camera a few months ago. I always wanted to get into photography, but the prices kept me out. Being able to buy a second hand DSLR was a huge help. The money for the cameras and 2 nice lenses was acceptable, and it just has enough bells and whistles to start me learning about ISO and other things without being overwhelming.
It's still a great camera even though it's missing some of the modern features, and they're practically a steal now. I think you'd probably do great with any of the old Rebels. Thanks for watching 🖖😁
I do like your approach to photography in particular the use of older cameras. I still have my 400D bought new in 2006 it is the only dslr I own. After watching your video on the G10 i'm thinking I might have to get one. Keep up the great content (subscribed).
Thanks, Matt. I appreciate the sub🙏 I’m a firm believer of photographer >lenses>camera and given the ridiculous amount of cameras I’ve used over the years I’ve found that if you can take a decent picture, the gear is secondary. The G10 is great, I genuinely love that thing and if you can find one for a good price you won’t regret buying one. Have a great weekend 🖖
Nice video. Just got my Dad's 400D and wondering if it was past it... obviously not! Reinforced to me that you MAKE picture and not TAKE a picture! Thank you!
Absolutely! And because it's older tech, you don't get distracted by all the bells and whistles of a modern camera. It's just you and the scene. Thanks for watching, have a good one 🖖😁
another wonderful video on so many levels...the woodland level, the older camera level (i still use the Canon Rebel XSi sometimes, yesterday for instance) and the human level or shall i say the David Flower level⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks very much, Kevin. These older cameras are still capable of capturing great images and these days they're practically throwaways if anything goes wrong given how inexpensive they are. Also thank you for recognising that there is a distinct difference between myself and humans 🤣 They'll come back for me some day👽🛸 Have a wonderful weekend, Kevin 🖖
Absolutely. The most important thing is you're enjoying it. I have another video in the works with the 400D regarding picture profiles so keep your eyes peeled for that🖖😁
Sorry mate, I have no idea. It's my dad's camera so apart from the basic info I learned for the video, I'm not sure of all of it's functions. Thanks very much for watching 🖖
I founded one for 120$ Canadian, become with one lens 18mm-55mm f2.8-4.5, some filter, transport case, battery charger, 2 battery, so sun lens protector and a battery adaptater. worth the invest for a base cam at decent price with all the accesories even if it was a 2006 camera !
Nearly always manual mode. With a camera like this I just find it gives the best results when you dial it in manually. When I use this camera for street photography though, I often use aperture priority with exposure compensation down a third of a stop. Thanks for watching 🖖😁
Hey ! great vid . Just curious if you have recorded video with this and if so can you drop a link to the footage. im looking at getting one of these for podcasting with.
Something about the files on the older CMOS sensors, almost dreamy/film quality, all this pixel chasing has got tiresome. I shoot professionally, and often take my Canon 10d (2003 6.3MP) camera along with my main camera body the Canon 5dmk4 - back to back, clients would never know. Absolutely agree with these as utter used gems, 400d's and the like are less than £30, stick a nice lens on it, I don't suspect anyone would know, nice small files to.work with also, is very important these days, hardrive space is a pain with the super high resolution bodies these days - Great video and great image's mate 👍 Off to eBay to see what I can get!
Yeah, I've been in the game professionally since about 2009 and I've gone from the 6mpx Nikon d70 with that gorgeous CCD sensor all the way up to the Nikon D800 with 36mpx and file sizes that made me obsessive about back up storage and back again lol. I switched to Sony a couple of years ago and the 24mpx of the A7 bodies or even the 12mpx of the A7s is enough for me. There's something just awesome about these older DSLRs though, strips it all back to basics and makes it all about the photography. Thanks for watching mate 🖖
I'm about to get myself a Canon EOS 400D with Sigma 70-300mm. lens. I adore your video: great pictures! I wonder: what kind of light did you use to take the snail picture? Is it a kind of video light? Looks awesome because that means I don't have to learn flash to do macro!
Thanks for watching. The light I used is a simple led video light from Amazon. I think it may be linked in the description. Vijim led video light is the brand if memory serves 👍
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Very helpful, thanks for your prompt answer, much appreciated. Will check this out on Amazon. BTW, camera and lens have been ordered of a Dutch auction website, both for less than GBP. 85,00.
It all depends on what you need from your camera. For more resolution, video features and a flip screen you're looking at maybe the 600D, if you want a more robust body with weather sealing etc, perhaps the 60/70d line of bodies. Just ask yourself why you want to upgrade. It might be a case of better lenses being what you need
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Thanks for replying mate. I am totally a noob when it comes to this stuff. I would like a camera for general nature videos for when I'm hiking/ some night time star shots and ease of use as I am new to this! I laughed at your outtakes at the end lol
I'm hoping you can help me. I bought the Canon EOS Rebel xti on ebay several months ago and I'm loving the camera. First time delving into photography. The only thing that didn't come with the camera was the disk with the software to upload the photos to my comp. I have the correct cable, but when I plug it in and turn on the camera, the only thing that happens is the word "BUSY" appears on the LCD screen of the camera, then nothing. My comp doesn't even see anything is plugged in. I have tried going to Canon's website to download the drivers, but it seems I can't find any drivers for the Rebel xti, only software like photopro, for editing. Any advice before I end up having to buy a card reader?
Unfortunately I'm unsure about the software. I use a card reader for all of my cards simply because it's proven faster to transfer everything that way. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial That's perfectly fine! Even that answer was a help, as I just learned it's faster to use a card reader, lol. I've subscribed to your videos, thanks!
Do you think that the sigma lens would be good for shooting trains? My Fujifilm HS20 got an autifocus error just like the HS10 I got for free from my dad, and I've learned to not trust the Finepix series, both these fell only once and the HS20 fell while being inside of my bag. I'm buying the 400D and once my dad repairs the Finepixes we are gonna sell them and I'm gonna buy a new lens since I'm getting it with the kit lens.
I used the Sigma lens for shooting cars on the track at Silverstone and Donington on my Nikon and it worked great. I expect you'd do ok with trains. Thanks for watching 🖖
I don’t do fashion photography so I don’t really feel qualified to answer accurately. I’d likely start with a portrait mindset and probably go with something with a range that will allow for full body shots whilst also giving some background separation. On apsc you need to be mindful of the crop factor (1.6x on Canon) and the space you’re shooting in and choose a focal range that allows you to get what you want in the frame within that space. For better advice I’d recommend talking to people working within the genre of photography you want to shoot. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day 🖖😁
I think it was just a cheaper one from Amazon, maybe Andoer brand? It could be linked in the description but this video was a while ago so I can't be sure. Edit. Ok I just checked and I used my wife's Zomei tripod in this one, also from Amazon 👍 Thanks for watching 🖖
Great video mate! That woodland is going to explode with color in a few short weeks! Hope you are able to vlog from there again!!Some really great shots in this one. I particularly liked the pathway shot...I'm a sucker for those and that was a good one! And really liked the look-up shot at the end! Fab photos from what is obviously still a very good camera! Nice work mate!
Thanks, Paul. Thankfully that wood is little more than a half hour away from where I live so I'll definitely be back there soon. I'm holding out hope for some autumn colours. Take care, mate🖖

There's something just awesome about these older DSLRs though, strips it all back to basics and makes it all about the photography. Thanks for watching mate 🖖
I just got this camera. With a Sigma 55-200mm DC Lens. 😀
On your unenhanced shots, what color profile were you using? Mine come out a little noisy in the reds and browns.
I always use the neutral profile 👍
Sounds like a great price. Hope you have some fun with it 🖖😁
I resurrected my 400D recently. i can use it on my Godox X1-T and X-Pro.
I just got myself an M42 adapter for canon so I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get with some vintage lenses.
Thanks for watching 🖖
Love them pics David!
What camera would be the next step up from the 400D in your opinion? I am just starting out
It all depends on what you need from your camera.
Thanks very much and take care 👍
Great video❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks very much 🖖
Sir which one zoom lens is good for fashion photography with cannon 400d? Guide me
I don’t do fashion photography so I don’t really feel qualified to answer accurately.

More video plsss
Hello brother... what you tripod used???
I think it was just a cheaper one from Amazon, maybe Andoer brand? It could be linked in the description but this video was a while ago so I can't be sure.
Edit.
Ok I just checked and I used my wife's Zomei tripod in this one, also from Amazon 👍
Thanks for watching 🖖
Great video mate! That woodland is going to explode with color in a few short weeks! Hope you are able to vlog from there again!!Some really great shots in this one. I particularly liked the pathway shot...I'm a sucker for those and that was a good one! And really liked the look-up shot at the end! Fab photos from what is obviously still a very good camera! Nice work mate!
Thanks, Paul. Thankfully that wood is little more than a half hour away from where I live so I'll definitely be back there soon. I'm holding out hope for some autumn colours. Take care, mate🖖
You have photo sample with standard lens?
All the images were shot with the standard 18-55 kit lens or the 70-300🖖
Hello friend do you recomended this camera for beginners? Sorry for my english
Absolutely. It’s a very basic camera but produces very nice images🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial how much this camera sir ?
@SebasTutoAndGamer In the UK they’re currently around £30-£50 on the used market depending on condition 👍
@@DavidFlowerOfficial oh so cheap! Here in my country is very hard to have a camera but i hope buy the mine in the future
Thats a lovely, romantic, video. Thank you. :)
Thanks for watching, have a great day 🖖😁
Thank you
Thanks for watching 🖖😁
Hi what music is that.
I use epidemic sound for all my music. I think the tracks will be listed in the description on these older videos 👍
Awesome 😎
Thanks very much 🖖
Is it good for recording?
This model has no video functions. I think the first of this line to have video was the 500d but don't quote me on that🖖😁
xti has no video mode, how did you do that?
It was filmed on the osmo pocket🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial can we use external monitor record on xti? need to hack clean hdmi if we can.
No idea about that. It's not a camera I looked at in terms of video.
Canon 400d EOS support video ?! 🤔
Thanks for watching 🖖
Does it?
The 400d has no video at all
How’s the video quality?
As I mentioned in the video, it doesn’t do video
Can you give me this camera?
It's not my camera to give away. It belongs to my dad. Thanks for watching 🖖
:)
