EM10 mkii and Pergear 25mm f1.7 is an AWESOME Combo!
For the past few weeks I've been using the Olympus EM10 mkii with the Pergear 25mm f1.7 and I think it's a great combo.
The Pergear 25mm f1.7 is the first Pergear lens I've used and it's proven itself to be another great third party manual prime lens for apsc and micro four thirds.

Interesting David! Thanks for sharing 😀👍
Looks just like the 7Artisans 25 1.7 I used for a while a year or two ago. It was pretty good too BUT the DOF, Focus scale, AND aperture scale were ALL fake, totally inaccurate, so mostly useless for hyperfocal focus use so I returned it. I'm guessing this lens and all of these cheaper Chinese lenses have the same problem although they're obviously good value otherwise.
Long waited new video! As always, super useful review - cheers, David 😊
Hey thanks for watching. As you might have figured from the intro, I intended for this to be ready much sooner 😂
I love it! We are all just a humans. Thank you for your work and time and things we can learn from you 😊
Ive got the Pergear 25mm F1.8 got it two years ago on recommendation from Angry Photographer. Focus throw on the F1.8 is no problem at all. Thats is such a good value for money lens! Love from South Africa 🇿🇦
I think I made it sound like more of an issue than it actually is. I’d prefer it to be longer, but it’s a fantastic little lens. It just gets a bit tricky with moving subjects even stopped down to f4-5.6 where I was mostly shooting. I’d say it’s more of a quirk to get used to rather than an issue 🖖
Weird they made the focus ring so scratchy on this, because the focus ring on the previous noclicked f1.8 version is smooth as buttered velvet edit: though I suspect copy variation applies
Yeah it’s quite possibly just my copy and the scratchy part isn’t super noticeable once you’re using it, I only mentioned it because I noticed it almost immediately but it doesn’t affect performance, the focus throw too I suspect is something that I’d get to grips with the more I use it. The lens is a great performer optically so I don’t think those things would put me off using it🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Roughly how many degrees rotation are we talking btw?(maybe you said and I missed it)
@LadyBovine I’d say it’s approximately 90 degrees at most with a 20cm/8inch minimum focus distance.
I was looking at this lens for my Fuji body and couldn't find much about it, now I know it's worth it's very small price! Cheers David.
The performance might be different on apsc, but from my use of the m4/3 copy, it’s well worth the small price tag 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial I love them little Manual lenses, ATM I'm having fun with the ttartisan 50mm, 35mm and 23mm and they perform superb so I can't imagine the pergear been much different with a aps-c body.
I used the ttartisan trio on Sony apsc and they were very good. It’s great to see third party options that are worth considering 🖖
OMG! Just when I was thinking of checking what manual lens to play with my e-m10 mkII for street photography, you drop this video. Are you reading my mind??? 🤣
I may or may not be a clairvoyant but for now I’ll just stick with the photography nerd title 😂
@electronic I coupled the TTArtisan f2 25 mm lens with my em10 mkii which I find to be a nice balance combo.
I own two 40D by now. They're good cameras, but I've always been drawn to shooting at low light and handheld, which is reflected in the selection of prime lenses I bought over the years. In that regard, the sensor of the 40D is pretty outdated. I started with a 350D and it's a step up from that, but not that much. Modern sensors with back-side illumination that started dominating around 2015-2020 are so much better under low-light conditions. So when it's about being in the moment and without having to carry a tripod around, it's worth buying a body with a newer sensor. Hope that helps someone out there :)
Love to have one but now my daughter has swiped it for live rock concerts I haven’t seen it for months
Sorry what lens are you using
It’s right there in the title mate, 50mm f1.8 which on the 7D gives around an 80mm full frame equivalent field of view (1.6x crop) 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial so might be me but is it the Sony 50mm f1.8 the sigma is 1.6
@deancarter4109 it’s all Canon. It’s the super cheap plastic 50mm f1.8, not the newer stm one
@@DavidFlowerOfficial is it in your links? I’m thinking of trying the 7D currently have the lumix G7 and heard good things about the 7D
@deancarter4109 It was a camera I borrowed from @ChrisBaitson for a few weeks so if you want more videos and info about it, his channel might be a better place to look👍
How is the autofocus on this one?
Surprisingly good in decent light. Of course it’s not going to compete with more modern cameras, but I’ve never noticed any issues with it. It gets a bit shaky in low light but then again, this whole camera is a bit shaky in low light😂 Thanks for watching 🖖
Hi David - I can relate. Coming from Nikon DSLR (D60, D7000) I lost interest in photography and its magic due to camera size (and again these were APS-C...) for ~2 years. I researched which camera to bring with me for a trip to Japan and stumbled upon the E-M10 MkII, which I got for a ridiculous bargain, brand new with the 14-42 EZ, the 40-150 3.5-5.6 and the 45 1.8, for less than €700, which I stupidly sold, all of them, a year later to finance an EM-1 MkII. In the mean time, I bought a second E-M10 MkII for my partner. To tell you how stupid I am and how much I LOVE the EM-10 MkII, I bought another EM-1 MkII for my partner, kept the E-M10, and re-purchased the 40-150 and 14-42 EZ again (the first has such character, the second is so handy to keep the camera pocketable). No matter how I like the quality and rendering of my E-M1 MkII, I keep going back to this little camera, so easy to carry everywhere with me, so joyful and simple, that gets the job done! Plus having done my own colour recipes set to Fn buttons, switching between B&W or colours instantly, makes me almost avoid editing my RAWs. This camera focuses on what's the most important: HAVING FUN! I fell in love with photography again thanks to this gem I will never sell again.
Haha, what a great story. You’re absolutely right in the this little camera is incredibly fun to use. I have the em1 mkii and a whole bunch of others including full frame, but the em10 mkii is just magic🖖
I’m a TH-camr focused on vlogs, sit downs and make up at times. Would this still be good in 2024? Just saw one for a great price 2nd hand
If 1080p is good enough for your needs then yes, it’s a great camera. It doesn’t have any super fancy video features, but it will get the job done. If you want 4k there are always things like the Dji Osmo pocket which are great vlogging cameras or even a reasonably modern phone can look and sound good with the right lighting and microphone🖖
I discovered the NX system late last year and bought an NX300 with a 30mm as a poor man's Ricoh GR3x substitute. I got frustrated by the absence of a viewfinder, so I bought an NX to use alongside it. Sadly, the NX300 started glitching and became unusable, so I replaced it with an NX500, which has fantastic image quality and is a joy to use. However, the control dial started playing up. I'd set it to my customary aperture priority, but the camera would act as though it was set to manual. Apparently, this is a common fault with these cameras, and now my NX30 has started glitching. It locks up, and I need to take the batery out to reset it. So, whilst I agree that these are great cameras to use with lovely pancake lenses, I can not recommend them due to unreliability.
I think it’s hard to recommend also because of it being a dead system. I understand the NX1 holds up, but I’ve no personal experience with it so I’m just going off what I’ve read. Thanks for watching 🖖
It's about the art, not the camera.
The camera is a big help though, hard to take pictures without it 🖖
Hey David id love it if you explain how I can transfer images from the xti to my laptop
Oh that’s an easy one. Just get a card reader capable of reading cf cards. You could also just use the mini usb port on the camera if memory serves but the transfer rates are always super slow compared with a card reader. The reader I use is just an incredibly cheap Polaroid branded one I got from a supermarket which cost me about £7🖖
Nice colors and scenes, I assume you mostly shot RAW?
Yeah I always shoot raw if the camera is capable. It just gives a clearer picture of how flexible the images are if you choose to edit. The scene modes I think were jpeg only (I can’t check because I gave the GF2 to a friend), but everything else was raw. Thanks for watching 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial The GF2 jpegs aren't great so shooting RAW or RAW plus jpeg is probably the way to go.
What is the firmware update?
The V3 firmware came in 2019 and brought some much needed updates to the camera including pdaf in video. I think the most recent one is v3.7 or so 🖖
for me the best part of the system is, how affordable the lenses are. I too shoot A system myself, apart from others.
Absolutely! Some of the older Minolta A mount lenses are incredibly cheap. I just picked up a 50mm f1.8 for less than £40
Have you tried the G1x? I’ve heard it’s a whole lot better than the rest of the G1 series. I compact for everyday shoot and travel you can have in the car or a Olympus ME 5 mark II or similar which is a little bigger and more complicated…. Life sometimes gives you too many options 🥸😂🤷🏽
Photography definitely has too many options and the larger problem is that for the last decade or so, most of them have been good. I think both fixed lens and interchangeable lens cameras have their benefits. Compacts are a 1 and done solution and you don’t need to carry anything else, but ILC cameras offer a lot more creative options and some practical benefits when it comes to shooting a wide range of subjects and lighting conditions.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial I’ve got a tripod so i want something with a easier access than my 5d mark II I can take with me everyday and Thai I can shoot landscape with too. I think you guys liked the Olympus 10 mark II. The 5 mark II is pretty much the same camera but without Wi-Fi but with weather sealing 👍🏻
@brunodrakenas9575 Yeah the em5 mkii is the same sensor as the em10 mkii so you’re gonna get pretty much the same image with the added bonus of the weather sealing you mentioned and the flippy screen for any odd angles you might want to capture 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial just bought a ME 10 mark II with the 14-42 kit lens for 145 quid. I feel like it’s a fairly good price. It was that perfect combo, a girl that bought it new and only used it the first year very “sparsely” before her interest in photography died 👍🏻
Yeah that’s a bargain. The kit lenses on m4/3 are surprisingly good. Probably the best of any system I’ve used. I had the lumix 14-42 super plastic kit lens and the image quality was very good 🖖
What are your thoughts on the G16?
I’ve not used it so I can’t really say. I’d expect it to be a step or two up from the G10 though 🖖
I have heard great things about this camera. I love what I see and hear. I recently bought a Canon Canon Powershot SX740HS. But I want a second camera. I am a newbie to all this. Oh, a Musician Ex Drummer of Hiphoprisy. haha.
It has its limitations but it’s a great camera for shooting in decent light. There are much newer options around and given how the price of these older ccd models has gone crazy, it might be best to shop around a bit🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial thanks so much. Trying work it out soon, travelling through turkey. Cheers
Canon g10 or the Olympus EM10 mark II? I “need” a nice small everyday camera!
Em10 mkii all day long for image quality and lens options, but if 28-140 zoom is enough and you don’t intend to shoot at higher ISO, the G10 is solid.
Is it you who buys all different cameras and Chris are borrowing them and makes videos about them? 😄👍🏻
We’ve borrowed cameras from each other in the past so it depends which you’re referring to. I borrowed his canon 7D, 1diii and I made a video with his RP. The rest are mine, I’m a bit of a camera nerd 👍😁
@@DavidFlowerOfficial thinking about the em1 mkii, Canon 40d and probably a few more. I’m watching a lot of TH-cam in hunt for the perfect camera so I might have mixed you up with other British lads 🤷🏽 the GAS runs deep!
We both have the em1 mkii and the 40d was mine and I think he may have used that at one point. For me I’m a bit of a collector and like to use the older cameras as a bit of a challenge. Like if I can get a decent picture with a 20 year old potato, I can get a shot with pretty much anything 😂
Hello david Is $350 for a Sony A6000 +kit lens and 30mm macro lens a good deal?
I’d say so. Here in the UK the a6000 is around the £300-400 mark used for the body only🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial thx a lot.😊
Hi David, what type of camera is good on a very low budget for youtube videos?
It depends on what look you want. If you’re just getting started a phone with 4k is good enough if you make sure you have good audio because people will let you know about bad audio before bad video. If you want something a bit more capable, the Olympus EM1 mkii is a great photo and video body with excellent ibis, great af and a nice cinema 4k codec🖖
I never watch "Shorts" but this time I jumped into it! Amazing sunset and pictures!
Thanks very much. I don’t make shorts often but that sunset was something else 🖖
GH1 with the XL speedbooster and Canon 24mm F1.4, oh man its love made in heaven with those colours and the L glass.
A speedbooster is on the cards for the gh5. Some of that canon glass is crazy good🖖
Does everything work ok on the GH1, it lists it as not being compatible on the speedbooster website
@@WiL1982 GH1 works with both 0.64x and 0.71x speedboosters but you can only use 0.64x in video mode or electronic shutter because the shutter curtain will hit the rear glass.
There was the Olympus Air A01 (from 2015). Significantly smaller in almost all dimensions. It was an interesting concept but more or less nobody bought it. Unfortunately the camera is almost useless without the smartphone and since Olympus stopped support it's now very difficult to get and run the software. Question is, does this even count as camera?
I’d never heard of this until just now but upon having a look at it, it’s more like the Alice camera and requires a phone for more than basic blind snapping. Very interesting idea and I seem to recall Sony making something similar? In everything I read I never even saw this mentioned, even by Olympus so maybe even they themselves don’t put it in the same category as the pen mini or lumix gm1.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial The idea to have a small box with just the mount and sensor and use it with the smartphone has surfaced several times but it never took off. You can build your own body around it, mount it on a drone or in other difficult places but at the end, the market for this is very small. The next problem is the software that needs to be maintained and updated for new versions of smartphones and in this case, even a company like Olympus decided to drop the development and leave the customers with a fading out usability after a few years.
Hey David! Would you prefer the GF2 over a PL2 or something?
I haven’t used the PL2 but I do have the pen mini which is basically an EPL3 and I had the EPL3 itself a few years ago. From an image quality standpoint, they’re all pretty much the same but when using the pen mini I did miss the touch screen and nicer body feel of the GF2🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Cheers David! Nice to hear. Just ordered a GF2 a few minutes ago. I'll use ist with the 20mm 1.7 ii. But..prices go skyrocket..puh.
Spot on. 🤘
Very cool ! I have a question how you make on post this beautiful sharp effect ? Your photo are very sharp for a low shutter speed !
There was nothing done in post to add sharpness, the Olympus ibis is just that good. I just applied a preset and tweaked the exposure. Either way the ibis in the EM1 mk ii you can easily hand hold shots up to 1 second depending on focal length🖖
Use my Samsung android, occasionally for street photography, but mainly for travel photography, and often use a simple selfie stick, which gives the option of differing POV, great if only producing photo books!😀
...great vid...had same problem with my dp1...recommend you the dp2 merrill...light small great lens and great b&w...
Hello David, Sony A7i +28-70mm or A6000 + Sigma 30mm f1.4 for the same money? Which one would you buy?
That’s gonna depend on what you intend to shoot with it. For pure picture quality and a much slower approach the A7 has the edge, but only as a photo camera. As an all rounder for faster shooting like wildlife and sport or as a hybrid for photo and video I’d go with the a6000. They’re surprisingly close in terms of both dynamic range and iso performance (the A7 is pretty bad at iso 1600+). For vintage glass use or portraits I’d go A7, for everything else, A6000
@@DavidFlowerOfficial thx a lot..
Hi 👋, I'm going to buy Canon EOS 7 D tomorrow, it's my first camera 👀 I travel often can I use this camera? I've no idea how to use as it's first time, thanks 🙏
The 7D is a fantastic camera. You might find it a little on the large side for travel but it’s not too bad with either a standard prime or a single wide range zoom. Thanks for watching 🖖
I have seen tons of very good photos taken with this camera. How is it “kind of bad”? I mean, it’s not an expensive camera. It’s a bang for your buck camera. The CMOS sensor is quite good and about as good as I’ve seen for the price, paired with pretty decent features, it’s a great option for an amateur that just wants to take clean photos and play around with editing.
It’s kinda bad because without that zoom, your phone is better and phones compared to actual cameras are garbage. It’s a fun camera for sure but the image quality is pants. For any beginner wanting to learn they’d be much better off buying an ancient dslr and kit lens as the image quality would be significantly better and when it comes to editing, they’d have the option to shoot in RAW unlike with this camera.
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Fair enough. But for the price and features? You’ll invest far more time and money into an ancient DSLR. I guess it all depends on how much experience and effort someone can put into it.
@Gubers canon 400d regularly runs at about £30 and they practically give away those kit lenses. I just bought a Sony Nex 3 for £31 so there are far better options out there for not a lot of money, but to each their own.
i really enjoyed watching your video but it makes me more confused because i used to take photos with phone and i love photography and this will be the first cam i will buy despite the small amount of money i have that allows me to buy the canon 400d or nikon d90 (or canon 500d maybe) ; so what should i choose ?
It doesn’t matter which you choose. They’re comparable cameras and both systems have an amazing lens selection. Thanks for watching🖖
It was like you were wearing a cloak of invisibility when you were walking along photographing people David, no one even raised an eyebrow!!! I agree that a mobile phone is a horrible thing as far as ergonomics are concerned and I'd rather use a proper camera every day of the week. I don't even think modern phones are that nice to use as a phone, or web browser, or whatever, they have too little to hold on to and are far too easy to drop, but they are pretty useful all the same.
Yeah it’s very much like they saw me, saw the phone and just continued on without further thought. As I said, I don’t particularly care for that type of image, but the fact that you can get them and no one seems to care is quite interesting. I was a fairly early adopter of the smart phone with one of my earliest being the Sony Ericsson P800 and as you’d expect they have just become more and more streamlined since then. I can’t use a phone without a case because I’d drop the thing in a heartbeat 😂
Your video made me wonder how many times I've been shot as I walk innocently down the street - although I'm sure they'd delete the image once they'd looked at it!!!
@GrumpyTim I’ve always been something of a people watcher, human behaviour fascinates me, but getting up close and personal to photograph it never appealed to me which is why I’m more comfortable shooting from afar safe distance. And I just realised that sentence made me sound a bit like an alien, I guess my secret is out😂 I’ve long since dismissed any illusions about privacy being old enough to have existed before the modern internet so I’ve no doubt that most of us appear on phone cameras, dashcams and even doorbells on a daily basis
Some very nice shots, never thought about the tidal tower as a thing to photograph, but it works, will have to remember that for next time I'm in Hull, I agree with you about the ergonomics when photographing with a phone, adding a mag safe grip to mine has been an improvement, not perfect but an improvement.
I enjoy your video as always. Your eye for composing a scene is simply brilliant. Without a viewfinder - using shadows , light and geometric elements of buildings to compose on a phone screen - Excellent!
Very kind of you. Thanks for watching 🖖
If I may please ask - which video editor do you use? TIA
I’ve been using Davinci Resolve since I started the channel and even the free version is very powerful🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial can't thank you enough, David! Much appreciate it!
Really great and so helpful videos, watching and re-watching them, cheers, David!
I really appreciate that, thank you🖖
Great video as always 🖖🏻
Thanks Alex🖖😁
Try it with a Bluetooth shutter release, not a perfect experience but better than shooting without one.
My biggest problem with a phone is that to get anything like a camera experience, you need extra stuff which soon starts to make the phone bigger than some cameras you can get but with worse image quality. I recently picket up a Sony Nex 3 for £31 and the image quality is far superior as you’d expect from a much larger sensor and it’s not a lot bigger than the phone. It was fun to get a few shots and no one take you seriously, I think that’s the phones super power🖖
👏👏
At least for me, I use my phone (a Xiaomi) to take pictures when it's forbidden taking pictures 😅 (or forbidden using the flash). Nobody think I'm taking pictures if I have my phone. And of course, we have always our phones in our pockets, so if I'm out and I didn't plan to take pictures and I see one, I just take my phone.
Exactly, they’re so convenient! Thanks for watching 🖖😁
Just earlier this evening I decided to bite the bullet and squeeze the trigger on updating my trusty iPhone 8, which has lasted me nearly seven years. I know there are new phones coming in a couple of months but the price was right on Amazon deals day today and it was a fair bit cheaper than direct from Apple even after Apple offered a tiny [insulting] part exchange price for the 8. Lots of reasons for an upgrade, not least being seven generations of camera and processing improvements since my 8 was new. Three actual lenses, one with three stages of optical zoom. Plus 64GB of storage on my 8 is nearly full and I had decided to get an Apple Watch, like my wife has, but the latest watch isn’t compatible with anything older than iPhone 12. Or was it the X. Anyhow, I also wanted the bigger display, so I went bonkers and decided on the 15 Pro Max. If it lasts me another seven or eight years, there is a chance it might even outlast me and I can’t take either the cash or phone with me. I use the phone in noisy environments and the idea of the watch is that it will vibrate and inform me of incoming calls and messages even if I miss the ring tone. Also as I get older and work a lot alone, the new emergency features and call facility will always be with me even if the actual phone is left in the cabin, a few metres away and it will call if I fall, well away from the iPhone, using satellites I believe.
I use my iPhone 7 a lot for street & throwaway images and it’s fine, I suppose, given it’s obvious limitations. (Great if like me you’re shy about using a camera in public places). Don’t overlook an iPod Touch as a decent carry-around camera without the phone element distractions :)
@@RealBesty thank you very much :)
Honestly I’d much rather use a little compact over the phone. Coincidentally I saw an iPod touch today and I’d forgotten those things existed 😂 Thanks for watching 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Oh, I agree entirely that a compact is much preferable :)
