Yeah, the cashier butting in would have pissed me off. Gotta wonder what makes some people think a thing is any of their business! We want kids to be like this… not colorblind, but fully accepting of any color they see. There’s no shame in the skin color, only the way people act about it.

    • @freshs.273
      @freshs.273 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

But you know, sometimes people just say the wrong thing... I've said stupid things/lost all my charm out of feelings like anxiety. Maybe the cashier wasn't racist at all and/or maybe what she said was incorrectly recounted, was taken out of context, or was not aligned with her better intentions... it sure made for a great viral video didn't it.
Imo Have mercy on people who make mistakes. We don't have to hate anyone to be happy for the little girl's good way of being. We don't have to create a villain so that we can turn another human being into a hero/idol in a story.

And sometimes people just say exactly what they mean. I don’t know if you’re projecting or what, but to go into an exhaustive summary of trying to excuse or minimize what was said by the cashier is unfortunate. It has nothing to do with not having grace or mercy on others, but a call out on inappropriate behavior. Exchange pleasantries with your customers and ring up their purchases is all that’s really required or expected from a cashier.

    • @freshs.273

@@Blessed-tn1wd btw I'm a mixed Hispanic and African American man. I just don't go around ruining people's days and getting mad over words that cant touch me. You get offended over long comments (only 5 sentences...)? Well I get offended over people who use this covert method of bullying. Intention is everything and we don't have the context to know the cashier's intention. I am an imperfect judge, "Blessed", so I withhold my judgment.
Edit: and you say a cashier is there to keep quiet... that's almost on the same level of socially offensive/"inappropriate" as what the cashier said imo. They are free to speak to others and find ways to enjoy their poor-paying job.

    • @Blessed-tn1wd

Sir, please explain whose day was ruined? We don’t even know who the cashier is. There was no protest nor was there an urging for this person to lose their job. By all accounts, the mother didn’t even “check” the cashier, the little girl handled it so why are you so in defense of this individual? I’m truly at a lost. The people that do harbor those type of feelings…..that’s their choice. Who cares? I actually feel sorry for them actually but when you start crossing into the demonstrative aspect of acting on those feelings, that’s where the problem begins. To act as though the society has not decayed is being disingenuous. Co-existing peacefully has been challenging. People have lost all etiquette amongst other things. I did not say for cashiers to stay quiet….re-read what I wrote. I said engaging in pleasantries with their customers. Pleasantries require speaking but commenting and injecting personal feelings on a person’s purchase I doubt is in the training manual. I was not offended at all as you can’t offend me but I find it perplexing the degree of your stance. And I don’t know why you mentioned poor paying job. Have a great day!

You're 100% correct Dena. I always say, "My father taught me love and my mother taught me hate". Seems interesting that usually it's the opposite, but not in my childhood household. Not until I went to college did I realize just how wrong and ignorant my own mother was. I had to reprogram myself to love all people. It's hard but it can be done if you want to.

"Parents raise kids to be racist" is a reductionist way of looking at it. There is no escaping the fact that, although people aren't necessarily born racist, we do have inherent instincts to trust in-group individuals more than out-group individuals. Racism is an extension of that instinct. Make no mistake, however - if something is natural, it has no bearing on whether it's actually right.

Yes they are! I'm so grateful to my parents because I grew up in a home without hate, too. My mom didn't tolerate any type of discrimination in our house whether it was about race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities - AT ALL! She didn't entertain jokes where someone's feelings were the punchline and I mean she would tell you quick, fast and in a hurry that it was unacceptable. I was like 9 or 10 the first time I even heard the N word (and I live in the south) from a kid in my neighborhood. I came home and asked her what it meant and she very quickly told me it was a word people used when they wanted the world to know they were ignorant. Being young, I believed her and seriously thought that was the definition until she came into my room later that night and told me where it came from and that saying that word was hurtful to black people's feelings just the same as if someone called me ugly or stupid, and she let me know that to say it was telling the world of your ignorance. She grabbed a coloring book off my shelf and gave it to me then handed me one white crayon and told me to color her a picture. I told her I needed more colors and she said no that I had to use just white and I got a little upset and started whining about needing more colors. She asked me why and I told her that the picture wouldn't be pretty with just one color and then she told me never to forget that. That the world wouldn't be pretty with just one color either and that's why people are all different colors, that if God had used just the white crayon the world wouldn't be pretty. It wasn't nearly as profound to me then as it became as I got older but I will never stop being grateful for being allowed to grow up without having to carry the burden of hating anyone for being different.

I think people are making the cashier out to be something they're not. If they meant it in a racist way, sure, that's terrible, but the cashier said 'we have lots of dolls who look like you, are you sure this is the one you want?'. There is nothing wrong with that because they're right, most kids want dolls who look like them.

I had a black Cabbage Patch doll in the early 1980’s which I still have to this day. Her name was Shirley April. 💕 My mom did the same thing with me pick which baby you want. When I was an adult I found out from her she got a lot of flack from people about me carrying her everywhere with me. 🤦‍♀️ Needless to say my mom could have cared less what anyone said, I was happy with my baby and that is all that mattered. So sad that people are so ignorant still...and that toddlers are so much smarter than some adults.

In my younger days, I also was a cashier and a mom came thru my lane with her 2 y.o. son. He had a Barbie wrapped in a washcloth and cradled it while brushing its hair. I was talking to the little guy and asked what his Barbie's name was. He told me and I said he was taking care of her so well. The mom disclosed that she lets her son play with the Barbie only when the dad wasn't around because he HATES that his son plays with dolls.
I proceeded to tell her my story of being 1 of 3 girls in my family and my dad wanted a son to work on cars with and learn his business of repairing swimming pools, etc. He taught me how to change a tire, change the oil and spark plugs and we even reupholstered my 1971 Beetle together when I was in High School. I learned skills that every person should know, regardless of their gender (sewing, cooking, working with power tools, painting a house, hanging wallpaper, mowing the grass, planting shrubs, and so much more).
I encouraged her that her son playing with dolls is teaching him empathy and caregiving. He may one day be a nurse or doctor or therapist. It's probably been 25-30 years since this incident and it has always stuck in my head. I wonder if that mom even remembers me as I do her.

This is so beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing.
Reminds me of a situation where this guy did awful things to his toddler because the boy had three sisters who all played with dolls, so he wanted to. The dad was being told by his wife and mom that his son was going to grow up gay. First of all, they shouldn't be taunting him, and second, what about teaching a little one empathy and care-giving, as you so aptly stated, and third, he was two. No need to even bring up gender at that age with a toddler.
My brother played with barbies I was given. I didn't care about dolls much--I was the girl with Legos and a keyboard, who played in the dirt. :)

It is interesting that a lot of people think that: “If a young boy played with dolls, he would grow up gay”, without ever remembering that a majority of gay men grew up playing with and doing very boyish things as kids.
Maybe this young boy will grow up to know just how to take care of his newborn and very young children in a more nurturing manner especially knowing how to relate to his daughter and her care and needs and even how to relate better to a girlfriend and or wife in a more sensitive and affecting way.

So, a boy wants a girl doll and father worries he'll grow up gay (dad's figured out how to prevent homosexuality?) Let a girl have a girl doll and same dad has no worries that she'll grow up gay. How about give this kid a Ken doll and see if he prefers it. Let him grow up to be who he is.
