  • Hey true believers! In this video, I respond to a request from one of my longest wargaming friends on how to paint pea dot camp for 28 mm late war Germans. I go through the 4 basic steps from the base coat up to the finished pattern. I hope he finds it helpful as he’s moving on from British Paras to his second army project. Thanks for watching and keep those brushes moving! 🎨👍🏻. Excelsior!

      Thanks. Take your time on it. I usually leave the green dots until the end. That's when it pops.

    Excellent break-down of the pea dot. Succinct

    Toothpicks are great for doing the dots.

      Thanks for the tip. I had tried toothpicks when I was painting WFB guys ages ago, but I just gave up on it. As my eyes are getting older, I've noticed my control on some detailing isn't as good as it used to be. I might have to give the toothpicks another go.

      I prefer a paintbrush with a sharp point - you want something the paint will flow from rather than be absorbed into. If the spots aren't fine enough, you're either using too much pressure or your paint is at the wrong consistency. Too dry and it won't flow off the brush, too thin and it will run.
      An alternative is a fine tip technical pen. they are available in many colors. I use a black one when doing eyes.

      Thanks, Vic. It's like doing a coloring book when you're a kid; It looks like shit until it's 100% finished and stay within the lines. lol

      Thanks. A lot of others have commented that using toothpicks is also effective to make the dots. I've been using the Army Painter 'Insane Detail' brush without any problems.

      @@jvcpaints I am about to try this on some Luftwaffe for Dust 1947. Historically this wouldn't have been a pattern used by them but in the Weird War setting of 1947 it's quite possible and consistent with box art.
      The great thing is, you can even switch up the colors with this technique and as long as the contrast and overall pattern (which dots correspond to which blotches) it still works.

    Well done, very low key vid high on great content, thanks! Although i loved the non- brand specific color descriptions and swatches ( well done!) d be interested in exactly which paints you use, as i bet you try to use them out of the pot to avoid colour variance where you can..? I used the toothpick method on my test model ( for a project thats never progressed past the test model yet!) and found i was quite exact in the use of it and found my dots too uniform- a point for me to work on. yours are great! Your friend looks like he could play op. market garden sometime soon!! Regards, Dan

    • @jvcpaints
      @jvcpaints  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Dan. I use Americana craft paints believe it or not. The local hardware store has them and they are literally 1/4 of the price of Army Painter/Vallejo/etc. and you get at least twice as much. (If I factored in the price of going into Tokyo and coming back into the paints as well they'd be even cheaper). I do mix for different types of olive drab or khaki though, but mostly I try to go straight out of the pot if I can. I tried using toothpicks for detailed stuff along time ago, but I gave up on it probably because I had no idea what I was doing. lol. There are a lot of great Bolt Action painters in the Facebook groups (like that Motas guy). I try to study how they paint and look at the 'trees' rather than the full 'forest'. As for my mate, I just hope he gets his stuff painted. lol

      @@jvcpaints hahaha! love the answer re; your mate! so true of those of us with gaming buddies! Great info re the paints. WE have a craft store in New Zealand that stocks those paints, and i have used them to brush through teddy bear fur etc before...will see them in a different light now..we do get caught up in 'paint /product snobbery' so often it pays to take a step back and check yourself sometimes!

    What colour did you use to paint the helmets on these Germans?

    • @jvcpaints
      @jvcpaints  ปีที่แล้ว

      I mixed black with a honey brown, almost like a dark mustard color, as a base coat then added more of the yellow for the highlight. When that had set, I gave it a light watered down wash of black . I hope that helps and thanks for checking out the video.

    Hi James, one brief question, I need some early war waffen-ss, at best with some non german equipment, but not from Warlord Games. Do you have any idea?

    • @jvcpaints
      @jvcpaints  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm. The best I can think of at the moment is Great Escape Games. I'm pretty sure they have early war SS, but I don't know about the weapons/equipment. All of their miniatures are metal, so converting might be difficult especially if the body of figure is really compact. Some Pulp game (Copplestone Castings)ranges do make guys with MP38s, but the troops look more like Freikorp guys from the 1920s. I hope this helps.
