    I really appreciate these rust tests. It helps to remind me to keep my higher Carbon AND my stainless blades oiled. But then, I have learned from experience how rust-proof or otherwise most of my steels are. You know, you prep a meal, cut some green eucalypt (one of the most acidic tree saps in the world I think), cut your salted bait and rinse the knife in the ocean water. That sort of stuff. I'm yet to get my H1 Salt 2 in salt water as yet, but I tell ya, the stainless that Opinel use is absolutely stellar. If you've got a stainless Opinel laying around, check it out. My N0 10 was used to cut salted bait and was rinsed in a saltwater inlet. When I got home I didn't think about the knife for some reason. The next afternoon (or maybe the day after that) I remembered the knife. There was no rust. It was a little stiff because some gunge got caught up between the blade and Birchwood, but it had no signs of rust. Yep, I was impressed.

    Interesting. I have a nearly ten year old edc BFZ1 Blur which I have heavily worn the handle on but the blade is still in good shape with not a speck of rust despite how I have abused the poor thing. I have never oiled the blade and I have done things you should never do to a folding knife like prying and batoning with it and it's held up great aside for a couple of scratches from digging and hitting rocks with it. The handle unfortunately, is another story. The fact it is almost a decade old is a testament to how tough the blade has been. I tend to damage or heavily wear my edc blades within about five years, but usually its the blades not the handles that prompt me to replace them.
    I actually found this video while thinking about replacing my old knife for handle wear. I wanted to see if people were still making knives out of this stuff because it's been tough as nails.

    I both enjoy and dread these videos. I have never had problems with rust (thank God) because I keep my knives cleaned and oiled but now I am afraid if I open my knife case I will have sticks of rust on handles instead of knives! Especially since I just bought a Bark River Bravo 1 M4 without researching the steel....

    A while back you made a video of two Gerber StrongArms... 420HC & BDZ1. I think a nice side piece to this video would be same saltwater test on BDZ1 and a 'still-coated' 420HC... then another with 420HC uncoated. One of the things I feel could have been better focused on in this video was close-ups of the edges. Commonly we see the corrosion spots from an overall appearance sense, however more importantly the revealing part is at the edge.

    BDZ-1 is a mediocre steel, not even close to BD-1.
    Comparing to 8Cr13MoV is giving it credit, more along the lines of 420 steel.
    Japanese AUS-8 or finished in Taiwan are far better than either sans BD-1.

  • @zdp-189
    @zdp-189 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why didn't you test me? AUS-8 is pure garbage in my experience unless it comes from SOG (I have 4 of their knives, their heat treat and/or coating of AUS-8 is top notch). But my Kabar Dozier, BlackHawk! Be-Wharned, Cold Steel Finn Wolf, Ontario Rat 1, and Boker Kalish all developed minor rust spots. Besides a few D2 here and there and some cheaper 8Crs's, none of my knives ever developed any rust. Either I have the worst experience with Aus-8, or its a tough steel for companies to make corrosion resistant.
