  • What are the implications of using AI to generate video game assets and potentially full video games? In this video, Spencer of RPG Archive and I discuss this very question and specifically why it is a sad and scary prospect.

I want to express my dislike for the term "Artificial Intelligence" in reference to this technology. What we have here is not a self-aware entity or a virtual brain with consciousness; it's simply Machine Learning. For instance, a Large Language Model is primarily engaged in predicting the next word in a chain of words. Its proficiency in generating human-like text often deceives humans into believing it's genuine human writing, but in essence, it's a product of sophisticated pattern recognition and statistical modeling, not true intelligence.

It’s not as intelligent / sophisticated as it’s made out to be either. It often reads as a series of hullabaloo words chained together.

@@Majora_T It is pretty sophisticated, not compared to the human brain but what we have now is a pretty amazing result from the hard work of very smart people. It's not perfect but it excels in certain use cases and even more so with a human curating the output.
It's just not an intelligence, it's a software tool.

Stumbled upon this but I would like to comment my thoughts on the statement of games losing their "art" from AI.
Video games are simply a form of media which allows the creator whether they may be AI or human to tell stories. The AI's themselves can definitely create a major portion of what is seen as the "art" of the game, but AI's making the process of game creation accessible and instantaneous is as simple of a transition as manual writing / drawing to printing. Even in terms of cost efficiency if the end goal is to replicate life in a way so that it is more understandable to the reader, photography from the 1800s would cost crazy amounts compared to a simple 3mb photo on your phone. The focus of AI's introduction to any creative / labour-some fields shouldn't be whether if they will replace us immediately but how you could co-exist and make it easier to work. Whether you liked it or not palworld pretty much nailed this part by using generated assets so that they can instead focus more on functional elements which most likely was why people enjoyed the game.
You can mass produce poor quality or half-decent games with AI's all you want, and its not hard to do so even at this current stage, but creative direction and the "art" of games still depend on a human process of writing up a function or story that is enjoyable for people (like cuphead), and if the AI manages to do this I do not see a downside to this if our end-goal is entertainment and not existential dread.

Interesting take. There are pros and cons. If used correctly, it would facilitate processes. I still anticipate game devs using it to cut corners.

ai makes the process of game creation accessible, like a lockpick makes the property of another person accessible.
