      Lou Costabile:
I've watched many of the videos you have done over the years; yes,you are in many ways brutal-crude and controlling of the vehicles and their owners/curators.
When I was a kid in the early 1980s, my dad got me a job to work with Ken Behring and Don Williams....as they were putting together the Blackhawk Museum. Many of the cars were stored in a nondescript warehouse in San Ramon then.
Mr. Behring or Mr. Williams would have sucker-punched you (or one of the bodyguards) had you plopped a book like that. One could only imagine how you would behave if given the opportunity to ride or drive a multi-million dollar 540K,Talbot,Bugatti,etc. like I did.
Mr. Behring was a true gear-head (so was Mr. Williams).....he had Pintos,Gremlins, etc in immaculate condition(expected the trim and glass to be polished to mirror like finish).......if you had plopped one those owners manuals on the grass....again>>>much deserved sucker punch coming anyone's way.

The 56 Continental is an understated design that says to the world that flash and bling is not necessarily good design, but a conservative clean, elegant, simple design is more enduring and has a greater classical appeal and that's true for a lot of things not just cars.
BTW my grandfather (who worked for Ford Mo Co for 35 years) said, that these cars were hand built just as Pete Mann said.
    Thanks Lou.

This is imo the most beautiful American car ever made. My grandfather had an automotive repair shop in Cuba and he drove a 55 Lincoln Premier (the second most beautiful Lincoln ever made). He specialized on mostly FoMoCo fleet vehicles, (which were very popular in Cuba during the 50's) and since he spoke English, he had a good relationship with the plants and suppliers stateside. He would routinely come to the states to pick up spare parts, and keep a personal inventory at his shop. He developed a fairly popular reputation for fixing Fords, and because the island was a beacon for American investors at the time, he attracted wealthy Americans to his shop, and one of his customers had one of these Mark II's. He took pictures with the car, and my dad (as a baby) with the car. It was a source of pride for him to have worked on it. He always spoke about it. These cars were totally hand built, and no expense was spared. Ford lost money on every single one. There were plans for a convertible model too, but Ford eventually axed that idea and instead converged Continental with Lincoln, and thus the unibody 58 Continental was born. Which is one of the largest and heaviest convertibles ever made.
I don't think you have ever featured the 58-60 Lincoln Continentals Lou. Hopefully one day you will. My grandfather always said those cars were treasure troves on wheels.

A pair of white cloth gloves wouldn’t go amiss when leafing through those rare books, Lou.
A beautifully proportioned coupé in superb order. My favourite feature ? The rear lamp cluster that opens on a parallelogram linkage to reveal the tank filler ! Difficult to believe Lincoln made a profit on these models despite the heady price tag.

I went to the Beijing auto show a few yrs ago. Lincoln had a big pavilion within. They brought one of these 1956 Continentals as a way of introducing their brand heritage to the Chinese market. There was a lot of other art, presidential vehicle photos etc. Apparently the Chinese market is doing pretty well for them now.

For those just learning about vintage cars I'm pointing out- It looks like the nose on this car had been repaired. The paint is a couple of shades different. And there are paint runs in the panel that the door hinges pass through to the left of the service sticker. Ford had these cars perfect at the factory and shipped them in fleece lined bags. I was surprised at the grunge on the Mark 2 emblem for the car being at a show. Maybe the owner hasn't had the car long enough to get to it, and may have been doing Lou a favor being unprepared for a video. I thank the owner for sharing. I'm sure this car is worth a lot of money even with flawed paint.

In 1956, as he was getting his first taste of some big money, Elvis saw someone driving one of these. The guy let him take it for a spin, and a couple days later Elvis had tracked one down for himself. A beautiful fully loaded white one, and he kept it the rest of his life. It's at Graceland with his other famous cars to this day.

I like Mark Lincoln's in any year I wish they still made them and I love to have a 1997 which was the last year for the mark. I hope you'll bring us some other Lincoln's from the Lincoln section of the show. I saw a 1985 Lincoln Continental sitting behind you that they quit making many years ago with the sloped back. I can't agree more. It's like American car manufacturers are dictating that all future autos will be SUV's. I mean, Ford has only 2 cars in production and Buick has none. What's really sad to me is Ford has the tech!!!!! They are light years ahead of GM and Chrysler with their turbo and Coyote programs. They could build any car platform they desire and people would buy it. But who wants a Ford Fusion? Limiting to Mustang, Fusion platform and the Continental being the only big car is tossing out car production completely. It's sad what's happened with America's short term corporate mind set.

Thank you Lou for sharing this, I came here because Jay Leno and the Lincoln Guy were showcasing the 1966 Lincoln Continental on one of his episodes, and they kept talking about the Mark II, so I had to see what all the fuss was about. All I can say is wow! Thanks for taking the time to film this and share it with all of us that will probably never see one of these in our lifetimes in person. One question: Have you looked into getting a gimbal for your camera? I don't have one or really understand how they work, but from what I have seen, it makes the video process really professional looking. I know it must be hard trying to film, and talk about something while at the same time wanting to actually touch things. I think some sort of stabilization would really step up your videos. Really classy lookin ride. The back looks way long, neat. Pretty dash. The vent on the door is so cool lookin, don't think I've seen that b4... kinda like a funky little grille for the door. I like the unusual vents on the roof. I like the white walls, they look exactly right on it.
N I love the look of the trunk with the tire shape formed right in it. I enjoyed seeing the book, love that kinda stuff. Excellent vid n story, real cool car... thank you!

I once owned a 1956 Lincoln premier and while the engine and HP were the same as this one, the body and interior of this gem was world's apart from the premiere. It was a great road car though, but if you cruised it at 80-90MPH as I used to like to do, the refueling stops became a frequent occurrence. But with gas at 26-28 cents/ gallon, it wasn't a major concern.

Word has it that Henry Ford II told his brother Bill, who was involved in the design, "I wouldn't give you a dime for that!" Allegedly, Bill had to sell his brother and other directors on the design alone. Later, when The Deuce saw the design for the '69 Mark III, he supposedly told Iacocca "I would like to drive that one home!" This 56 is nice, and ahead of its time.

Vestigial spare tire hump on the trunk, very cool molded into the bumper exhaust tips, pull away tail light to access gas cap is an Easter egg, although probably quite unsafe if the taillights ever had a short circuit, nice green tint to glass, elegant paint, very restrained styling, beautiful center crease on the hood, chrome embellishments over the top and lastly nice patina. Hi Lou, thanks for covering this beautiful and highly original example. Every time I see one, I'm struck by its massiveness and elegance. FYI, the body design on this was by Gordon Buehrig, who also designed the Cord 810, along with many of Duesenberg's LaGrande catalog bodies. The Mark II was expensive, but caused Cadillac to bring out the Series 70 Eldorado Brougham in 1957, which was priced at $13,000 give or take. The Mark II is so much prettier, though. Thanks again!

Back when American luxury cars were unmatched in the world. This one was the very definition of understated luxurious extravagance. Notice the lack of chrome body pieces as was typical of the time. Everybody was trying to get into the jet age with their styling so they added a lot of extra do-dads and mostly made the cars look hideous.

This car and the 61 thru 63 sedans are the finest looking vehicles ever made. Why 61 to 63 only? They lengthened and changed the grill on 64 and up. My tastes in tires makes me prefer the thinner whites on these cars instead of the "gangsta" whites. Then on the 66 to 69 Lincoln, I prefer the coupe version. My dream collection would be a 57 Mark ll in deep burgundy red with cream interior, a 63 solid black with red leather, and a 67 coupe in copper metallic with cream leather.
