Sometimes you can have colour samples in your hands that just don’t impress you or stand out in any way. If I were to see a sample of this colour it would just never occur to me how beautiful it could look . Remarkable seeing power windows, power seats and power convertible top on this 49 caddy...I know they all used the hydraulic system ( because modern systems were not yet available, and apparently were very tough to do repairs on), but still to see these ultra modern conveniences on a 49 car...simply awesome....

In my view, styling changes don't always mean that the earlier models are outdated - Remember, style is a matter of personal taste. For example, many people consider the 1957 - 58 Eldorados to be more stylish and attractive than the Deville and Sixty Special models of the same year - I don't agree with their opinions.I think that those other two series are more attractive than the Eldorados of those years. And,although the styling cues are essentially the same, the 1950 - 53 models are a different body shape and style than the 1948 - 49 models. The 1954 -56 models are also different from the earlier years. The 1957 models were totally different cars from those that had gone before;they also had an all new X frame, which allowed Cadillac to make the cars lower - They also handled considerably better than the earlier models, due to a lower center of gravity, and new suspension.Personally,I like most Cadillacs of that era -They had class and character.....
In 1958 my brother had a 1955 convertible, baby blue with dark red interior. I was a 19 year old kid and thought I was something driving that beautiful car.
At 7:48 that's the motorized electrohydraulic pump for the windows, seat and antenna. The windows were pushed closed/up by hydraulic pistons. The window regulator had two springs to pull it open/down. The valve opened and the pump would pump fluid into the cylinder closing the window. When opening the valve would simply just open and the springs would pull the window open pushing the fluid back to the reservoir. Seat worked the same way back and front. The top had another pump and reservoir behind the rear seat for the top. However, those two (L & R) hydraulic cylinders were two way with a valve on top and another on the bottom. Fluid pumped into top valve and top opened, fluid pumped into bottom valve and top closed. Had a 1951 Buick Roadmaster convertible and that is how the windows, seat and top worked. This Cadillac was still the same operation. My Buick had the radio antenna at the center of the w/shield with a knob on the inside to turn and swing it up or park it down to middle of windshield. Buick had that antenna that way a lot of years. Packard too.
@@loucostabile Thanks for the reply, I had a 1948 Buick Special that I restored and confused with my 1951 Buick Roadmaster when I posted this post. I corrected the year.
This brings back a lot of memories -- when I was a teenager my dad had one of these in the fastback version . It was finished in black lacquer and with a fresh wash and wax job would turn a lot of heads. No AC which was not unusual in those days. The shot of the radio reminded me of how odd it was by today's standards, transistors hadn't been invented yet so you could drain the battery if you wern't careful. There was a tube that hummed as it converted DC to AC and would get weaker as the six volt system drained the battery. After dad died mom sold it. Wish i still had it.

Lou, this 1949 Cadillac is the same model that Liz Taylor drove in “A Place in the Sun” with Montgomery Clift. That car appeared to be white and Kim’s is powder blue. Both had the rare ivory colored steering wheel! Thanks again Lou.👏👍🙏🇺🇸

A old friend had a picture of himself as a little kid, and mom sitting in her White 49 Cadillac convertible in their then SoCal driveway. Only thing about this one with power windows, these were hydrolics and had many problems.
For everyone who loves the styling, it was headed by the great Harley Earl. He was hired by GM in the late 1930s and by the time he retired in 1962 he had revolutionized the car industry with his design studio. The first division of any car company dedicated to only automobile design. The most beautiful cars of the late 40s - early 60s were GM and led by Earl.

YES THAT IS A GORGEOUS 49 CADILLAC COSTING $3523.00 BASE PRICE .BUT A 49 OLDS 98 CONV COSTING $2973.00 BASE PRICE WAS ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME .AS THE CADILLAC HAD A 331 CU IN OVERHEAD VALVED V8 THE OLDS ALSO HAD THE EXACT ENGINE IN 303.4 CU IN DISPLACEMENT. HP WAS 160 FOR CADILLAC AND 135 FOR OLDS. WB CADILLAC 126 IN AND OLDS 125 IN. JUST ONE INCH DIFFERENCE AND THE STYLING WAS THE SAME AS THEY USED SOME OF THE SAME BODY PARTS AND CHASSIS.
Beautiful Caddy....fascinating that the '49 had power windows, power seats, and power convertible top...features that wouldn't become commonplace for years to come...only thing missing was air conditioning, and likely was not available on even the '49 caddy convertible.....
Joey..it is my understanding that when the hydraulic system for the power options broke down and needed repair, it could be a real nightmare, with oil leakage and all sorts of other problems...
Yep, absolutely. I watched a frame off restoration of a 1954 Fleetwood and they showed how the power windows worked. It was a nightmare. Not only that but they had to rebuild the factory air conditioning system which at the time had to be in the trunk because, again, technological limits at the time meant a big huge evaporator, condenser, and blower fans. The development of smaller, efficient 12 volt motors happened very quickly in the 1950s because of the hydraulic issues. By 1959 all power windows accessories in a car were electric. It was one of the driving forces to convert the electrical system in a car from 6 volt to 12 volt as well. When the windows were hydraulic you didn't need high current relays and extra fuses. The more electrical added to the car demanded higher voltage for safer and more efficient operation.
Lou, Lovely old Caddy. I saw one like this one in 1981, in a Ferrari shop, totally covered in a light layer of surface rust, awaiting restoration. Elegant, imagine the Caddy's of the 50's, what a change in just a matter of years! All of them beautiful! I sorry to say I would would prefer a 1959 Eldorado B. convertible! What does that say about me? Thank You! Peter Brooks. I also like the 1953 Caddy Eldorado B. Soft top, I believe the 53 had a shorter wheelbase, which I prefer.

Beautiful car. Want to see the trunk, hear it run. Would like to have the owners view in the hydraulic system. Must be interesting when it leaks. You seem to be in a hurry and missed some key areas.
I also wanted to know more about the hydraulic system, among other things. Hydraulic antenna! And that wasn't the hydraulic pump on the firewall, but a reservoir or something. I don't think there was power steering yet - Chrysler in 1951? What did all that stuff run on, and why didn't they just go electric in the first place? My (40+ years old) 1962 Lincoln had vacuum locks and electric windows, but for some reason hydraulic wipers running off the power steering pump. One day I was parallel parking and there was a blast under the hood and the steering went dead. I knew exactly what had happened. A 40+ year old hydraulic hose had split under the pressure caused by turning wheels with the car stationary, which I guess results in the highest hydraulic pressure. Makes sense. Anyway, had to have it towed away and it was something easily fixable. The heater-AC systems were vacuum controlled and so byzantine no one wanted to work on them.
My folks had a new "49 olds convertible. I was young but still remember stopping to fill the Hydraulic fluid for the windows and top. Like one of those good old days things we tend to forget about.

Hi F C Burgner, Glad this one brings back wonderful memories of your Dad's :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story, Lou

I'm not a fan of later American cars but the 40s and 50s were absolutely beautiful. This Cadillac is simply a stunner.. If I owned it I wouldn't take my eyes off it, I'd have to park it outside my lounge room window.
Hi Gerald, High praise for the looks of this car :-) Lou
Lou, this 1949 Cadillac is the same model that Liz Taylor drove in “A Place in the Sun” with Montgomery Clift. That car appeared to be white and Kim’s is powder blue. Both had the rare ivory colored steering wheel! Thanks again Lou.👏👍🙏🇺🇸
Hi Ramon, Thank you for sharing some movie trivia :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou

LOU. THIS 49 CADDY IS THE GRANDDADDY OF THEM ALL
THE HARD TOP. FAST BACK IS TIMELESS IN STYLE CATEGORY
Hi Andrew, Happy to read you enjoy this "Grand Daddy Caddy" :-) Lou
The wierd warping makes me nauseous. But what a beautiful vehicle! Thanks for sharing it with us!
HI Matt H, Yes, great car, and the "weird warping" came from TH-cam asking the question back when this video was made, "Would you like to stabilize your video?" Sadly I thought it would help, so I click yes on way to many videos back in this time frame. Lesson finally learned the hard way. Videos in the last 5 year should be fine, Lou P.S. Here is an example I think you'll like. th-cam.com/video/KpWHzBLULoQ/w-d-xo.html

Absolutely a real gem
High praise.
These autocars had class and style: nowadays we have only inelegant clumsy and dark SUVs.
This phenomen is named "decandency"!

Hi Louis, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Yes Lou I love the fifties cars and can name most of them from 1949 thru 1970. That Cadillac was so fine. Thanks for your reply.@@loucostabile
A old friend had a picture of himself as a little kid, and mom sitting in her White 49 Cadillac
convertible in their then SoCal driveway. Only thing about this one with power windows, these were hydrolics and had many problems.
Sounds like a nice picture of a wonderful memory :-)
For everyone who loves the styling, it was headed by the great Harley Earl. He was hired by GM in the late 1930s and by the time he retired in 1962 he had revolutionized the car industry with his design studio. The first division of any car company dedicated to only automobile design. The most beautiful cars of the late 40s - early 60s were GM and led by Earl.

Again, another beautiful car. Very classy and not overchromed, like some later models. Isn't this the same kind of car Elizabeth Taylor picked up Montgomery Clift in A Place in the Sun? I'll have to research....
Yes, same car only white. And Liz doesn't pick him up, that comes later...
Hi hcombs0104
, Thank you for viewing your thoughts on this car, and some Elizabeth Taylor info too :-) Lou
Nice automobile. Congratulations to Mr Flores. First I've heard of hydraulics for to power the windows etc on a GM car that I can remember. Must have predated the small DC electric motors that were used on later years.

Good catch :-)
Power windows and power seats?! WOW! So, this car had features on it that still exist today?! WOW!
Hi Beun007, Glad to receive to "WOW!'s" :-) Lou
Yeah, but what me amazes is that this car was far ahead of its time... That also means that we're actually talking about a rich American car history... That lead is vanished! Sadly enough because the American car industry was world leading! And that is exactly what makes me feel bad...

OMG! Perfecto!

Anybody who owns this car has impeccable taste. American cars were best in the world. Effortless design.

Beautiful Caddy....fascinating that the '49 had power windows, power seats, and power convertible top...features that wouldn't become commonplace for years to come...only thing missing was air conditioning, and likely was not available on even the '49 caddy convertible.....
+daniel lack Amazing the power is hydraulic, thanks for viewing! Lou
The power equipment had to be hydraulic at the time because electric motors were so big and heavy they could not fit them inside the door lining.

Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this color :-)
Beautiful car. Want to see the trunk, hear it run. Would like to have the owners view in the hydraulic system. Must be interesting when it leaks. You seem to be in a hurry and missed some key areas.
Hi Daniel O'Connell, Glad you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Not in a hurry, just didn't think of some of the things I'm doing now. Lou
0:48 What does that boy do in reflection? :))
He wants to play baseball, I guess.
