- This film includes home movies that show Edsel Ford at home, with his father Henry Ford, at the Indie 500, driving the first Continental and relaxing at home.
Henry Leland, a former manager of the Cadillac division of General Motors, and his son, Wilfred Leland, formed the Lincoln Motor Company in August, 1917. Leland named the new company after Abraham Lincoln, his hero and for whom he cast a vote in 1864. Lincoln's first source of revenue came from assembling Liberty aircraft engines, using cylinders supplied by Ford Motor Company, to fulfill World War I government contracts.
After the war, the Lincoln factories were retooled to manufacture luxury automobiles. Ford Motor Company purchased the Lincoln Motor Company in 1922, but Lincoln continued to operate as a somewhat separate company from Ford through early 1940. On April 30, 1940 the Lincoln Motor Company became the Lincoln Division of Ford Motor Company.
At the direction of Henry's son Edsel, in 1923 several body styles were introduced, that included two- and three-window, four-door sedans and a phaeton that accommodated four passengers. They also offered a two-passenger roadster and a seven-passenger touring sedan and limousine, which was sold for $5,200. A sedan, limo, cabriolet and town car were also offered by coach builders Fleetwood, Derham and Dietrich, and a second cabriolet was offered by coach builder Brunn.
As the brand grew it developed several memorable vehicles, the Zephyr, the Continental Mark II, the Lincoln Continental and recently the ubiquitous Town Car.

Bought my wife a 1996 Pearl White Lincoln Town Car. She loved that car. When my kids told me there were too many miles on it, and to get a newer car, my oldest son said he wanted the '96. He still has that car. Has over 350k miles on it and still as quiet as when we bought it.
Lemme guess: your Town Car probably outlasted whatever replaced it

That 88 continental was something to behold. In a time when every other luxury car was large and square it stood out and was a thing of beauty. My uncle had one and I couldn't wait to get it in the driveway to just wash it because I wasn't really driving yet.

Lincolns are so underrated in society honestly. You hardly see that car on the road, yet when you do see it, it does give you a sense of awe. Plus you never see them on the side of the road either! ;)

Agree. I had a used 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car when I was in grad school in the early 1990s. It was in excellent condition and the last of the great land yachts to drive. White exterior with a black vinyl roof, Florida tinted electric windows (with 'wing' windows, too), black valour seats, Opera windows and lamps, 8-Track Stereo, and built-in CD player with foot operated microphone button located above the floor high beam headlight button. I had it for two years. Drove it from NY to Texas in two round trips. Got 11mpg in town and 15-17 highway. Later I had a 1989 Town Car, charcoal grey with black vinyl landau top, with a black leather interior. Drove it from Pennsylvania to L.A. and kept it for 2 more years in showroom condition. It also drove and rode great and although it kept the classic lines and style, it was a cut down size from the 1979 model but still a "big car" for its decade. I miss those big luxury American car rides today.
2011 last rear wheel drive isn't too shabby either. V8 & 25 mpg with room for six real adults. Then you have that trunk where one can fit real vintage Samsonite/Travelers suitcases back there.
I've never had a Lincoln but always had a soft spot for them.

Correct. He founded both Cadillac and Lincoln Motor Car divisions and are the two best car brands ever made.
Eric Haley: Remnants of the Henry Ford Company founded Cadillac in 1902. It was renamed Cadillac after a group of investors and Henry Leland forced out Henry Ford, and basically burned him. The first Cadillac was basically a 1903 Ford Model A. lol.. In 1922 Henry Leland's "Lincoln Motor Company" filed for bankruptcy. Henry Ford personally got his revenge when he bought The Lincoln Motor Company in 1922 (then worth $16 Million) for $8 Million. What goes around, comes around. lol.
He was obviously the founder of the top 2 American luxury cars still standing today.
D J JOb: Yes, Leland and most of Ford's investors wanted to build luxury cars for big profits. In the end Ford's idea of mass production and cheap, reliable cars won out.
Henry Leland was an engineer working for Henry Ford and was responsible for designing it's reliable 4cyl engine. He left Ford and started Cadillac and demonstrated his engineering excellence in London when ten Cadillacs were disassembled, the parts mixed up and put back together perfectly. But after GM bought him out, they decided to get rid of him because he opposed using cheap parts. So he formed the Lincoln company, which he then sold to Ford. Leland should be remembered as an engineering genius, and Edsel as the design genius.
Leland was an interesting figure in automotive history and his relationship with Henry Ford was strained. Leland took over Ford's faltering first company when the shareholders gave Ford the boot. Ford wanted to produce affordable cars and the owners wanted to produce luxury cars. The changed the name to Cadillac. Later, Ford got his revenge when he scooped up Leland's faltering Lincoln company and then pushed Leland out. Revenge.
As Jay Leno so often observes, some automotive pioneers were great engineers but horrible businessmen!
Lincoln deserves better then what’s going on now, we need to bring back the “performance” part of it, bring back the mark nameplate

The 1972 Lincoln Mark 4 was the best looking body style hands down ! My dad owned one ,as well as other ones( 1974 , 1977,and 1978 ). Man I miss being a kid lol.

Thanks Paul. Unfortunately, don't have any video/film of a '61. And the T-bird oversight was done not as a slight but this focuses on Lincoln. We do have another film of the Wixom plant that shows both car lines being built. Thank you again for watching and pointing out our shortcomings. Always room for improvement.
After reading these posts, I would bet many, if not most of the Lincoln haters never owned a Lincoln!

Picking up my 92 town car from the original owner today. A perfect companion car to my 90 Mark VII.. Lincoln has me hooked.
I think if Edsel Ford saw the current line of Lincoln cars he would wonder what happened. This new line doesn't even harken back to the 1990 model year cars. Sad commentary on what we drive today versus 10, 20, even 30 years ago.

Ockie Ditchbank and the Edsel in 1958... I’m sure Edsel Ford turned over in his grave then. Henry Ford is probably turning in his grave now because of Ford cutting off their cars except for the mustang. Ford is really going downhill, it’s a quite a shame.
Ockie Ditchbank GM is also shutting down a ton of plants in Canada. I think it’s the beginning of the end for GM... to be honest, the entire auto industry is really struggling right now.

senorkaboom If you think those pos cars from the 80s 90s are amazing you’d think my Mks is a spaceship, I had a 5.4 put 200k and had quite a few problems my 3.5 ecoboost has 100k and hasn’t had a single problem. They actually use real wood now, Bridge of Weir leather, mag ride, massaging seats, quarter mile in 13.6, the best part you can drive around corners going over the speed limit.
I had a 62', and the cars today look or perform nothing like the oldies!
I have a 2013 Mks does the quarter mile in 13.6 seconds stock lol. With just a tune there 12 second cars. Also you can actually drive it around corners.

The '55 Lincoln Mk. II was the best-looking Lincoln ever made. *Not* the '88 Continental.
My grandfather was a big Lincoln fan. He always drove a Continental of some sort. Although not the '84 or later Continental - the one that looked like a 1980s T-Bird. He was not a fan of those. In fact, he actually "downgraded" in 1986 -- sold the car he had then and bought a '79 Mk. IV. Kept that car until he died in '93. Beautiful car!
LMacNeill 56 & 57 models weren't Lincolns, though...Continental was its own brand.
The 69-71 mark 3 is argued to be the best ever made as it also outsold the eldorado on its 3 year run and would go on to beat Cadillac again on the mark 4 run.
1969 mark III was as good as it gets. 365 b.h.p. at 4600 rpm. ,no big car could touch it or its beauty.

My 02 Executive Panther platform was, built at the Wixom plant, prior to manufacturing being transferred to Canada. I love this car, it's a boat but , runs beautifully with a 164,000 on the clock. I have read of some of these in fleet service doing 300,000 without major issues. It is my first ever Lincoln and it is impressive.

The attempt to kill the '76-'79 Cadillac Seville sales bonanza, Lincoln took a Ford Granada and created the (urp) Lincoln Versailles. Sure they put some interesting engineering into it but it was still a Granada underneath. And yet it is the only modern Lincoln (1950-1990) that could keep the tires from howling as you attempt a modest turn. I rented a Town Car once and it was so huge, I couldn't control it safely and I took it back.

As for not being able to "control" a Lincoln Town Car..I would say this speaks more about you not being able to drive a large car than anything else. The Town Car..in all it's years..was always a pleasure to drive..safe..easy to handle..and even easier to maneuver. And nobody could beat it's ride quality.

Good Job...Great Cars. I owned 5 of them. My 2007 Signature Limited is still going with 431,000 mi with the original motor 4.6ltr. Rides like a dream. There will never be another car like it.

The group Lincolns Online ran a survey asking Lincoln drivers about their Lincolns. Estimated average engine life, 450,000 miles. That included normal daily drivers, up to New York taxis. Last one I bought was a used 2005 Town Car . Turned out to be the dealers wifes car, with 37,000 miles on it. Hope it outlasts me.

I believe you are right. The narrator is voice actor William Woodson whose last credited role was in 1991. He was famous as the narrator for the mini-series Winds of War and War and Remembrance.

Finest car I ever owned, an '85 Lincoln Signature Town Car. Any back pain? They're gone with this machine. The later models didn't have this level of comfort. But this new Lincoln.....Lovely lines: lovely comfort, through and through.
I'm not a Ford guy but Lincolns beat Cadillac in almost every way. Navigator is better than Escalade in my opinion. My gf at the time bought a brand new 2005 Navigator. I put a few thousand miles on it during our time together and it was almost perfect in every way. You can pick up used Navigators for around $40K that are like new. My grandma had a brand new 1959 Lincoln Continental when I was a little kid and in my boyhood memories it was FANTASTIC! You can't go wrong when buying a Lincoln.
My friend is on his second MK Hybrid and he's loving it. It looks great, handles like a dream and is comfortable.

I had an '89 Town Car. Pretty much a re-packaged Crown Vic, but solid, and reliable. Had to get rid of it when an oil leak showed up that would have cost more to fix than the car was worth. Ended up with a '99 that's still running, but has all kinds of issues. I can't afford to replace it right now. Meantime, I inherited a '98 DeVille, which, I think, was a better car. It's in the shop right now [grin]. The Lincoln goes in when I get the Caddy back. We'll drive 'em until they won't move under their own power....

The '69 Mk III was, imho, the pinnacle of a very good line before it and since. Beautifully styled, 460 cubes, I buried the needle on the speedo no problem at all. Black paint and black leather buckets in a black interior. It was like getting into a space ship. Truly a banker's hot rod!
Speaking of the real Lincolns they left out the best looking Lincolns ever, the 58,59 and 60 Lincolns and Continentals.
Strangely enough, nobody seems to consider the '58-'60 Continental a "real" Continental.
@@slicksnewonenow Maybe so but why leave it out of a Lincoln "history?" Supposedly they lost money on these cars but today they are worth five times what they cost new and some go way higher at auctions. I don't think any car is more collectible than the 58,59 and 60 Lincolns and Continentals and every week, so it seems, somebody finds another one stuck in a barn just waiting to be resurrected.
Thanks Paul. I try to be thorough but sometimes it doesn't work. I'd say that drive would be a bit pricier now than in '61. We just drove from Detroit to LA -- passed through AZ (Flagstaff, Sedona, Phoenix) and averaged 41.5 mpg in our Prius. But have to tell you -- honestly would have been a lot more comfortable in a '61 Lincoln.

I think the latest Lincoln Continental is a great looking car. It's just too bad that the marketplace has shifted towards SUV's because the new Continental is greatly underappreciated.

Sir, as a Detriot area resident the Wixom plant was considered the Lincoln plant, but it never had the sole Lincoln production to be profitable. From 1958 to 1976 it also produced the Thunderbird. When the Thunderbird was "downsized" in 1977 its production was moved to another plant. The plant was closed in the early 2000's because for so many years, if just cost too much to run. Great videos, always enjoy them as I am a car person.
I love Cadillac. I love Lincoln. I want to own examples of both! At the present, I can only afford to desire them.

For the first time since 1960, 1968 Lincoln Continental finally get a 2 door hardtop, replacing the 4 door convertible. We don't know why it took so long to revived the popular body style.
I'm looking at a pristine 2011 town car to accompany my Mark VIII in my driveway.
After '79 it was the beginning of the end for the Lincolns.
And my 98 mark is the end of the end ...
My fleet of Signature L series ranging from 2005 -2012 carrys over 200 pampered, satisfied clients every week, and says: "the end?, whatever"
No 79 was NOT the end for Lincoln. The true end was 1998 for the Mark coupe, 2002 for the Continental and 2011 for the Town Car. Those were the last True Lincoln's of the modern era! The newest Lincoln's are crummy and are just your cookie cutter dressed up regular Ford's. Lincoln's are no longer Lincoln's anymore.

That blew my mind, I had no idea energy absorbing steering columns were in 1956. My grandfather had a new '57 Premier, then a '64, then his last one was a '69. They just don't build classics anymore. Little look alike SUV's anymore.
Had a Mark 8. I think that was he last of high performance Lincoln to me.
Yes the Mark 8 and the Continental for 95-02 with the Lincoln InTech 32 Valve V8. They became the Hot Rod Lincoln once again. :)

@@Catboy. The Cobra was a 302 too but far from being the same engine. My 81 has the same engine but it barely puts out 135 HP., The Cobra had about 600 HP if I'm not mistaken. The 81 is nice to drive but it's no hot rod by any stretch of the imagination.

I have owned 3 Lincoln Town cars,1985-1994 and now a 1992. I have loved them all. Great cars, great ride, excellent big car fuel economy. I believe the 1956 Premiere to be the most beautiful of Lincoln cars in the (modern era) but after dropping the Town Car in 2011, I personally think they have lost their way .Much could have been done to continue to upgrade the 1998-2011 Town Car but they did not and in the last years just turned out the same car and then complained sales were dropping off. Whoever made this decision at the ivory towers made a big mistake.

So, is there an updated version? Also, they missed the Town Car of the 80's, pretty sure that was an important one as well.

They need a revised version with the only Lincoln in many years to deserve credit, The LS8 ! This Vehicle showed that they in a very short time could Compete and Beat the European market BMW,Mercedes,Audi etc in the Sport sedan class. The LS was ahead of itself but its understandable that youth didnt want the stigma of the " Old man Lincoln brand name" witch is the reason for its demise! If FMC continued the LS and dedicated as much into it as Caddy has with their CTS V ,It would be Beast in this day...

Lincoln was also the first car of Ford to offer an automatic transmission. That transmission was GM's Hydra-Matic, same one as with Cadillac.
Ford never used the Hydra-Matic. Also, Cadillac may have started development of it but Oldsmobile finished it and offered it first in 1937. Also, Ford introduced the Ford-O-Matic in 1951 in Fords (From what I have read online and in books, Lincoln didn't get it until 1955)

Oh wow...............well then that is OK. I was a little harsh I apologize and if you are the one that posted the Wixon footage, THANK YOU, because that is just amazing! I just about fell over, I haver read everything that I can on Wixom, but had never seen that amazing film. My dream was always to drive my 61 back to "her" factory, but now it's all gone. (I don't think I could afford the gas for that trip (AZ to Wixon) anymore anyway!!!!

Im not the only one to of noticed how the '58-'59-'60 lincolns were skipped over. Its sad that Ford ignored the fact that they ever existed, by cslling the 68 contintal a mark 3 instead of 6,as the 60 continental was a mark 5. They were truley awsome cars big and beautiful in thier own way and are only now being recognized for that.
OK, number 1. The Wixom factory built Lincolns AND Thunderbirds, not just Lincolns as the video stated. And number 2, if you are going to talk about the 1961 Lincoln and it extremely influential design, you might want to show one. You showed a 62, 64 and 65, not a 61 in the bunch.

yup...Cadillac passed them over a decade ago. Lincoln cars of today are "Meh". Too bad the Lincoln prototypes in the last 10 years weren't placed into production. Those had artistic worth as well as competent & well-placed accessories.

They ended on the 92 Town Car, I think the video was released in 93 as the Mark VIII was haha.
The Mark 8 and also the new Continental beginning for 1995-02 with Lincoln's InTech 32 Valve V8. By far one of the best engines ever put in a Lincoln. They truly became the Hot Rod Lincoln once again. :)

My car is a 1998 black mark 8 lsc with a C cylinder head conversion from an 01 svt cobra, in 1999 the Continental came from the factory with the C heads
