- SO YOU STILL WANT A COCKATOO?? LISTEN!!! WARNING: IF YOU HAVE BIRDS, IT MIGHT UPSET THEM!!!
DESCRIPTION: I had bought a DVD from the INDONESIAN PARROT PROJECT ("The People and Parrots of Wild Indonesia") hoping that our wild-caught Moluccan Cockatoo Molly would enjoy seeing and hearing the sights and sounds of her native land again after so many years in captivity.
Unfortunately, there are only about 5 minutes of footage of just a few wild Moluccan Cockatoos HIGH up in the trees on the 30-minute DVD. The video includes a lot more footage of the PEOPLE of Indonesia.
AS SOON AS MOLLY HEARD THE VOICES OF THE PEOPLE AND THE MUSIC THEY PLAYED, SHE BECAME EXTREMELY AGITATED! SHE BEGAN PACING and SCREAMING BLOODY-MURDER WHICH TRIGGERED SOMETHING IN NANA AND SHE JOINED IN in SYMPATHY. OBVIOUSLY, MOLLY REMEMBERED WHAT HAPPENED TO HER SO MANY YEARS AGO AT THE HANDS OF HER CRUEL INDONESIAN CAPTORS: IT BROKE MY HEART AND BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES (I can hardly re-watch my own video and will NEVER play this DVD again in front of the birds!).
It seems that towards the end, Molly tries to calm NANA down by cooing softly to her. THIS IS A VERY SAD VIDEO...
If we could just stop the suffering of our beautiful Feathered Friends at the hands of the human race!

Everyone who wants to own parrots should have to listen to this video at full volume for at least two hours everyday.
That's an excellent point and I think you are right! It does seem like Molly is circling around Nana's cage to ward off the unseen danger and, then, towards the end, when Nana is screaming inside her cage, Molly coos to her like she is trying to calm her down!

God, this made me tear up... I volunteer at a parrot rescue and your bird's noises are heart-breaking... please give her extra kisses and lots of sugar snap peas from someone else who cares...

Cockatoos are loud, I'm glad to see there people like you showing just how loud they can be, those screams can be heard a city block away without a doubt. I hope it'll give someone 2nd thoughts before running out and buying one without doing proper research and knowing exactly how much of a commitment they are. My first 2 were rescues, a moustache parakeet (also loud) and a cockatiel. Now i have a COG, He'll be mine until I die and then he'll go to my son, who he also really likes.
Hana is such a CUTIE!!! Hope we didn't upset him too badly...smile...the cockatoos seem to understand each other and 'chime in' in sympathy when they hear the distressed screaming of another!

I could never own one of these birds, they're obviously incredible but more than 3 minutes of this and I would be a weeping nervous wreck - in sympathy.
I used to have a pair of cockatoos like you, but then I took an eviction notice in the knee.
on a different note, when i clicked on this to watch, my meyer's parrot was hanging out on me and as soon as he heard the screaming, he flew off so fast and looked at me like, "what the hell was that?!" i had to turn the volume down or all 3 of mine would start... :O
This is truly sad. I have a rehomed U2 who is 12 years old who has nearly forgotten how to be a bird. The poor thing was stuck in a cage for so very long. Seeing your molucan's reaction truly shows how smart these birds are, and how much they remember being abused even if they were very young.
Oh those poor sweeties!!! I'm so glad you are out and about spreading adopt and not buy!!! Our U2 was adopted at age 3... she had 5 homes by the time we got her. We are EXTREMELY lucky she's a fabulous bird!

I have a Goffins Cockatoo who was wild caught (when it was still legal). She had already been through 3 homes when I got her in 1997 when she was around 5 years old. She is half the size of these birds but can be just a loud. Cockatoos are very cuddly birds which is what attracts many to the birds at first. The problem is, they want to be cuddled ALL THE TIME or they scream like these birds at times other than the usual morning and evening contact calls. I guess she is around 25 years old now.
Also, on a lighter note, may I say that I giggled at the guy saying "hey, hey, hey" at the end, lol. Like THAT will help anything!!!
I know the feeling though and when the ears start bleeding, one really does try their best to calm the birds! It's that or just walk out of the house for a few minutes, lol. I don't know about you, but my birds rule the roost around here!
Very powerful video - it should be seen by every potential bird owner so that they know what they're getting into! Beautiful birds you have though - great job!
I cannot even play this video at the LOWEST possible volume without Molly INSTANTLY responding again to her own warning calls 2 rooms away! Their hearing is phenomenal!
Hey that sounds like my house! Starbuck and Sugar do that almost every day, just not quite that long every day but now and then. Starbuck is usually out and on Sugars house too. They are just volcalizing but it does get really loud. Thanks god we have 2 1/4 acres so they can do it till they get tired or? Hope you enjoy your feather friends. We sure love ours. Even though they are loud the are big lovers and love us unconditionally. That's why we call them the "Good Kids"! ha ha but we realy do
Great vid that everyone wanting a too should watch first. I'm looking for another parrot but this is exactly why Toos are off the list. There lovely birds tho if you can stand the noise!
These birds make some of the most terrifying noises I've ever heard.
well, it's strange because the first time i heard jasper do his "hawk alarm" i knew what it was instantly. it's very distinct and i've heard other parrots do the same or very similar alarm calls for hawks or other bird predators. when i looked at him, sure enough he had one eye looking up at the sky (thru the window) and ok, so it was actually a helicopter, but he didn't know that! for him it was a REALLY big bird that could eat him!
it sounds so... BEAUTIFUL!!!

My Ducorps Cockatoo does "go off" whenever I play any of these you-tube videos featuring screaming cockatoos. He had a scream-fest with your video.
Umbrellas are also much quieter/calmer birds than the Moluccan. That's the main reason Moluccans are so often abused, relative to other birds. I've rescued two Moluccans and one Umbrella (permanent residents at my home). Very different species.
I think ALL birds instinctively recognize each others warning calls no matter the species. Since our feathered friends are all still wild at heart and have retained their wild instincts, I would surmise that they understand what Molly is saying and may respond to her warning calls by either screaming, too, or by trying to fly away from the 'danger' she is warning of or by falling silent so as not to be a target of the unseen 'predator(s)'!
It seems to me that he wants to save the cockatoo inside the cage,and hes expressing it through screaming.....theyre very very affectionate but loud...it would require your full attention to take care of them for sure
My 2 U2's got very quite when I played this! But I sure know this sound. I hear it several times a day, everyday, every week, every year! I love my birds but if I knew then what I know now, after 20 years, I would not have purchased an Unbrella Cockatoo, or any bird. If only I could go back in time! But I do love them and will lay down my life for them!
My cockatoo was screaming like this because she wants to go outside, but it's in the low 60's and has been raining hard for the past 2 days. I saw this video and played it for her. Now she has been quiet for the past 10 minutes. Wonder what they're saying? I know if mine screams, she wants to look out the front door and see wants going on. That's all.... then peace and quiet. ;-) Thank you for this video. I sent it to my girlfriend who thinks what I'm telling her is BS. Yes, they are loud, like to destroy toys, aren't the 'singing in the cage' type bird like a parakeet... and enjoy company and interaction. They are NOT friendly to everyone. So watch your fingers! ;-)
hahaha i watched this video with my umbrella cockatoo present and he started making that noise and he never makes that noise unless he gets frightened, it must be like their language or something.
They just don't look at them like that -- to them (and the breeders), they are nothing but a meal ticket... God has to be weeping, too...
That's interesting! My first parrot was a Chattering Lory. Sometimes I took him outside sitting on my shoulder (with clipped wings!) so I could show him the flowers in the yard. He would suddenly duck into my neck or do a flop onto my chest with a wary look upwards, and when I looked into the direction he was looking I'd either see a bird that flew overhead OR A PLANE WAY UP HIGH IN THE SKY! Our parrots are ALL instinct STILL! He, too, obviously thought those planes were a potential predator!
It can get DEAFENING around here but usually Molly just does the same HAPPY screaming and wing-flapping 'thing' that your Penny does.
THIS angry roaring and aggressive pacing was highly UNUSUAL and did not start UNTIL she heard the voices of the Indonesian people from the DVD. I had been watching her very carefully to see what her reaction would be and had NOT expected THIS! At one point it looked like she was trying to fly off and flee and I jumped up to turn off the ceiling fan...AND THE DVD!

Because they needed a home -- there are countless birds lingering in parrot rescues in the United States because their owners did not want them any more... :

Hmm, I started watching the video before reading the comments.. My u2 is sitting on the arm of my chair and looked alarmed at first. I thought it was a bit funny because for HER to be alarmed at screaming is a joke :P but then I read the comments? I guess she understood what Molly was saying better than I did at first. Poor thing.
That is QUITE interesting about your Meyer's response and I'd be curious to hear how other people's parrots react to Molly's ANGRY and FRIGHTENED ALARM calls!
Wow, yeah. I just read the description. That is really sad. Its amazing that something like that could trigger such an emotional response in a bird.

i have a macaw but i would never ever even immagine having a cockatoo inside my house. haha kudos to everyone who has a cockatoo. i don't know how you deal with this haha.

its a sad situation really. poor Molly, the video must have triggered something. those that buy wild caught birds should be held responsible for the trafficking of these birds in the end the bird is given up and it ultimately suffers not one trauma but several, even captive bred birds once someone buys it they should be responsible for its welfare and not give them up after a year or two.

@Jelloxox: THIS kind of volume is unusual, BUT parrots do tend to exercise their lungs at least twice a day -- morning and evening -- something in their genes tells them to call their flocks members in the morning to make sure everybody is still there -- same at night as the 'flock' goes to sleep...volume will depend on an individual parrot...

what pisses me off is how little attention and credit these creatures get. they are so intelligent and emotional and yet all animal intelligence is focused on dolphins and chimps. people would balk at the idea of capturing a wild dolphin and putting it in a swimming pool as a pet, but parrots? no. it's just so sad. and they never forget.
Molly DID want to sound very threatening and dangerous so nobody would DARE come and catch her again! (See the description for an explanation of why Molly was so terribly upset. I threw that DVD away and she hasn't roared like that since then!)
AHH! Your house must be really noisy!! Do your birds scream a lot, or was Molly just screaming because of the video of the Indonesian people?

The day pet stores and breeders are FORCED BY LAW to make people watch a screaming video and take classes on how to care for these magnificent birds.... will be a great leap in the right direction, for sure!
People need to sign contracts that state they are well aware of the ear shattering screams that can continue for what will feel like eternity! THEN be told the bird will be doing this until the day they (owner) DIE, since the bird should, by all rights, outlive them!!!

Which one is the moluccan? the big one at the top? Can they interbreed? I have an umbrella cockatoo and I had a Moluccan many years ago and I cant tell the difference.
The big one one top is the Moluccan Cockatoo -- they have a salmon-colored crest and are larger than an Umbrella Cockatoo who have a purely white crest. Google some photos of the 2 breeds.
jcharth They are two different species (Cacatua moluccensis and Cacatua alba), but yes, they can interbreed. The hybrid is called a "mobrella".

Guys please guide me is this the normal sound for Umbrella cockatoo s I mean daily or every hour they are making noise like that? i have investigated a lot about them but only this voice issue is remaining.
Yeah, it is kinda normal...they are LOUD! How often they will vocalize at the top of their lungs depends on the individual bird. It is normal for them to do some screaming in the morning and in the evening as all birds do to make sure that all flock members are accounted for. If you live in an apartment, you should not get a large parrot to live with you because of this noise issue. Rescues will not adopt out large parrots to people who do. If nobody is home with the bird all day, it will probably do more screaming as it is looking for company. Large parrots were just never meant to be pets -- they are not! Sadly people find that out too late and then they (especially the Cockatoos) wind up discarded in rescues (if they are lucky) or rehomed umpteen times. Heartbreaking...

this is how they behave in the wild. Its pretty normal. Its how they warn for predators, or get mates.
It can drive you crazy though!!!!!
