  • The Alfa 145 was the most distinctive cars of the '90s, and as a Cloverleaf the last of the old school raw hot hatches, Italian style over Golf bloat.

This review brought back so much memories of my youngers years back in Iran. Around 1992, 3 when the Iranian political environment started to change a bit and after the end of Iran-Iraq war the import of foreign cars was allowed and Alfa among some other European manufacturers started advertising their cars. Alfa 145 and MK2 GTI were my favorite cars. I clearly remember I went to a car dealership that had one 145 in it's show room and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, Alfa never got to import its cars to Iran at that time, while VW and Opel (Astra) did. I love your 145. I hope you still own it.

Regarding the exterior design...the step-sharp feature-section that runs on the side of the car originated from the 164.You should know this!!
The car was actually designed NOT in 1990 but mostly in 1987-1988 in FIAT CENTRO STILE.Then moved to Alfa for the final detailing around 1989-90.
The most important design feature is actually the REAR!The first hatch to get over the straight horizontal glass line, copied by almost every brand, and also significant for the Alfa rear distinctive look. Also was probably the first to introduce the slanted rear tail light look, also copied by most.
The very distinctive front hook design is 100% Chris Bangle, who was the design chief of the overall project to large extend,in close collaboration to ex Alfa design boss,Ermanno Cressoni, who was his boss at that time. Both also created a greenhouse that is one of the best in terms of quality of execution, just look at the moldings, the very original opening of the tailgate(you noticed that). As a result, the 145 looks still modern, due to this effort. The 146 version was designed at Arese by the Alfa team. They did the rear since the front comes from the 145,which is the base for the 146.The second series bumpers(softer?)were done at the Alfa Arese studio during the DeSilva times as well.

At 8:20 not a crusader being eaten by the serpent but a Saracen warrior. The serpent or biscione was the personal emblem of the Counts of Milan and was worn during the Crusades. Both the Count of Milan and the King of England also used the same flag of St George by personal agreement during the Crusades, which is why the flag of the City of Milan and of England is exactly the same today.

Lovely! I still really miss my old 145 - mine was the 1.6 T Spark - not as fast as the Cloverleaf, but no slouch, and it still saw off a Golf GTi mk3. It had disks all round, and leather steering wheel and gear knob. All it lacked over the Cloverleaf were alloys, the body kit, air con and of course the 2.0 T spark engine. Those leather seats are tremendous!

Alfa was still suffering from the very poor reputation it gained during the seventies for rust prevention. Or rather that there wasn't any. I would have loved an Alfasud but they just didn't last more than a few years at best. They never really recovered from that in the UK.
Another problem was the dealer network. Firstly, there weren't many and secondly, from my experience of our then local dealer and from that of a good friend in London, they were pretty unhelpful with warranty claims. My local branch was also staffed by some extremely rude people. Not conducive to selling some fairly exclusive cars.
Very sad really as there were many very good Alfas which I would have liked to have had a go in. It's great to see that you found such a good example of one of the best.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The reputation was unjust by this time, they galvanised everything from the 33 on so they were better than alot of rivals but the damage was done in the publics mind. The dealers were variable, one I used to use was fantastic, lovely people and so helpful, GoItalia where I still take this is one of that dealers mechanics.
The Tunbridge Wells main dealer though, awful. Exactly as your friend described. I cant believe they are still going with such bad service

Actually surprised to find a good modern review about the 145! This car definitely needs more attention, as you said it was one of the best 90's hot hatch when it came out, then the competition got a bit fierce with the Peugeot 306 GTI-6, Xsara VTi and Bravo HGT.
Fun fact, it was originally designed at the Centro Stile Fiat by Bangle as a 5 door hatchbach (like the Tipo) as a proposal for a Mk.2 Lancia Delta. One of the chief designers saw the "breadvan" shaped model coming out from the wind tunnel and thought it looked like an Alfa. The design was then taken to Centro Stile Alfa where De Silva modified it and the rest is history…
Yours looks really good, those leather Momo seats are ace, my favourites after the sport Recaros. I've got a pre-facelift Rosso Cloverleaf with the Recaros hahaha. It's my first car, had it for more than three years now. Such a fun thing to drive, it's no longer that fast compared with modern cars but it has character and personality which is something you just don't get with newer stuff.
Surprisingly were I'm from 145/6s are incredibly common, sadly most of them are quite neglected.
    Good video!

This review is amazing. Really shows what Alfa is all about. 145 has always been quite different and innovative, that QV model must be a blast to drive. My parents used to own a 75 2.4 TD and they sold it back in 2006 when I was like 8 years old. To this very day I wish to own some kind of an Alfa Romeo in my life. A 75 would be nice, but, finding one for sale in Croatia where I live is mission impossible sadly because Alfisti really hold on their cars well.

@@furiousdriving Yeah, the 2.4 5-cyl Turbo Diesel. Made by VM Motori. Ours had around 180 000 miles when it was sold. That thing never left us stranded anywhere. 75 was a true tank of a car with it's sports genes thanks to RWD and transaxle gearbox. But that quirky 80s interior with airplane-alike handbrake and window switches on the dashboard is truly something special as well.
If you somehow get across one for your review, it'll truly be something I am looking forward to. Keep up with great content!

Had two of these, both diesels, 1.9td and 2.0 jtd, lovely cars to drive. You have to really look after them though, keep an eye on front upper and lower control arms and bushes, they tend to go pretty quickly, and because of those big doors the door stoppers easily break. Air mass meters are fragile, too.

Good video on an often overlooked car.
One suggestion though, when going through the interior and explaining the various parts of it would it be possible to show a cut-away video or a small picture of whatever is being explained more often ?
For example when you were talking about the instrument cluster, seeing a picture of it would really help with the visualization.

This family of models (145, 146, 155) was more appreciated abroad than in Italy; the new engines were more appropriate in terms of torque and greater weight of the car compared to the 33, but in Italy the Alfisti went on prefere the previous boxers and their rough (unique) sound.
My Japanese friends said that over there the 145/146 had been more appreciated than that masterpiece of the 147 (they expecially loved the 146; difficult to believe).
However, looked at today, you discover that it is certainly more interesting and perhaps beautiful than its contemporaries

Lovely! I previously commented on your 145 T shirt in another video a while ago... I have 2 phase 1 QVs that have been off road for a few years and at some point soon, I need to get round to sorting them out! My own personal one, a 97 in that sort of gold tinted silver, needed some suspension, bit of floor and sill welding and brake replacement (now probably a bit more) with 243k miles on! Yes, 243k! Original bottom end in really good condition, replacement head because the previous owner drove it for 3 years with a bad thermostat. I bought it at just over 100k (IIRC) and drove the nuts off it, once warmed and the only time it let me down was a worn out battery! My other 145 is a dark metallic blue that I bought cheap with 108k did a fair bit of welding on and replaced all suspension bushes, but never got round to finish. Booo! :(
The rules for these (and other similar engined Alfas and Fiats):
Check the oil level every time you put fuel in it. Every. Single. Time. Also, read the manual about servicing.
Let the engine and box warm up, at least so the temp gauge is off the pin and on the scale before you nail it (As the Right Hon. Lord Mr Sir Jay Leno says about Italian and most other European cars!)
The driving position is odd. Get used to it. You will, eventually.
Enjoy the sound, the feel, the way that it's quite well behaved until you drop a cog or two and boot it, then it feels wired like it's had a few too many espressos!
    Superb car!

One thing I have never really liked however is the dash, not the shape, but the switchgear, it's the opposite of the wonderfully appealing exterior. The only thing the MK3 Astra had sorted over the 145 and it was its dash.

I have heard horror stories about the reliability of those 16v twins spark engines as they age. That is why when buying my Alfa 155 i opted for the older and slower 8v Twin Spark. The steering on those is quite nice, light, direct, tons of feedback, brakes are great by the standart of the 90s and on the highway feels quite stable at speeds up to 180 kph. When you push it really hard on a twisty road though you get torque steer and lift off oversteer. The plastic details tend to fall apart in your hands (exterior door handles, rear view mirror). All gasoline engines sound great though

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3
